GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: Minor G1-class geomagnetic storms are possible on July 20th or 21st when a slow-moving CME is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. The CME was hurled into space by an unstable filament of magnetism, which erupted on July 15th. Aurora alerts: SMS Text.

EXPLODING SOLAR PROMINENCE: Astrophotographer Miguel Claro usually doesn't bother checking solar activity late in the day. The low sun makes a poor target for his camera. "I made an exception on July 10th, and I'm glad I did," says Claro, who caught this magnificent eruption just before sunset in Portugal:

"As soon as I realised that a huge prominence was visible and growing so fast and dramatically, I started shooting," he recalls. "The sun was lower than ideal, and the atmosphere had a fine layer of dust coming from Africa. Even late in the day the temperature was very high, around 38º C. To compensate for all these shortcomings, I made a huge effort to gather as many images as possible."
"The final result was a 4K high resolution solar movie comprising around 1 hour of images from 1737 UT and 1830 UT," he says. "The gradual change in contrast of the solar disc is caused by the sun getting lower and crossing the Sahara dust layer." ...not a bad way to end the day!

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WARNING: Geomagnetic storms are possible on July 23rd when a full-halo CME is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. The storm cloud was hurled toward Earth yesterday by a solar tsunami eruption. NOAA forecasters say that G1- to G2-class (minor to moderate) storms are likely with a slight chance of escalating to category G3 (strong).
Exactly what time will the CME hit? This NASA model of the approaching cloud pinpoints the impact within a few hours around 0000 UT on July 23rd:
    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Nasamodel2_crop_strip
In the animation, Earth is marked by a yellow dot. Note that Mars, a red dot, also gets hit--a glancing blow on July 25th.
An independent NOAA model of the CME predicts a slightly later arrival, with the densest part of the storm cloud reaching Earth around 0400 UT on July 23rd. Either way, NOAA or NASA, the timing favors sky watchers in western Europe and North America. In the most optimistic case of a G3-category storm, auroras could descend as far south as Illinois and Oregon (geomagnetic latitude 50 degrees) during the night of July 22-23. Aurora alerts: SMS Text.

NOCTILUCENT ALGAE: Two nights ago, Ruslan Merzlakov of Nykøbing Mors, Denmark, went outside looking for noctilucent clouds. Instead he found noctilucent algae. The tiny dinoflagellates were glowing blue at midnight, a phenomenon known as "bioluminescence."
    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Algae_strip
"It was an amazing experience playing with these algae in the waters of Limfjord," says Merzlakov. "I have never before seen them so bright in Denmark."
Bioluminescent algae tend to be brightest during summer months. It's no coincidence that they are extra-bright this week. Europe is experiencing an extreme summer heat wave. "The daytime temperature was +30C, and that night it was +23C," says Merzlakov. "For comparison, our typical nighttime temperature at this time of year is only +15C."
Like algae, noctilucent clouds (NLCs) are also brightest during summer months. NLCs form when wisps of water vapor rise up to the edge of space and crystallize around disintegrated meteoroids. The electric-blue color of NLCs is strikingly similar to that of the algae, although the physics and chemistry are entirely different.

THE CME HAS ARRIVED: Arriving almost exactly on time, a CME hit Earth's magnetic field on July 23rd at 0315 UT. The impact sparked a minor G1-class geomagnetic storm with auroras in some northern-tier US states. Solar wind speed: 532.0 km/sec
"At about 12 midnight, I noticed a familiar light purple vertical glow to the east," reports Greg Ash of Ely, Minnesota. "It was STEVE!"

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Steve_strip
STEVE is actually not an aurora. The purple-colored arc is the glow from a supersonic river of gas, which flows through Earth’s magnetosphere during some geomagnetic storms. Short for "Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement," STEVE is a relatively recent discovery.
Regular auroras also appeared over Minnesota. "I could see them with my naked eye," reports Heather Martens. "They were bright enough to photograph using my iPhone."
Earth is now passing through the CME's wake. NOAA forecasters say that more G1-class storms are possible, with a chance of category G2 (moderate) or even G3 (strong) storms in the hours ahead. High-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras.

SUMMER MOONDOGS: record-breaking heat wave is baking the USA. Yet there is some cold air if you know where to look for it. Last night in Albany, Missouri, Dan Bush photographed signs of ice around the Moon:
    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Moondog_strip
"One of our video cameras in the Missouri Skies Meteor Camera Network caught these rare moondogs as well as a bright Moon halo," says Bush.
Moondogs are the bright spots to the left and right of the Moon. Like the circular Moon halo, they are caused by ice crystals in high clouds.
"This sort of phenomenon is usually associated with cold winter weather," adds Bush. "These particular icy clouds may have been blow-off from the tops of some storms to the north and west of Missouri."

CHANCE OF FLARES: NOAA forecasters say there is a 25% chance of M-class solar flares today. With 8 numbered sunspot groups on the solar disk, a flare could come from almost anywhere. The most likely source would be fast-growing sunspot AR3081, which is nearly facing Earth.

BREAKING WAVE: Yesterday in the core of sunspot AR3078, an S-shaped strand of magnetism erupted. What happened next was a little unusual. A blast wave shot out sideways and broke against the wall of a nearby coronal hole:
    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Breakingwave_strip
Coronal holes are voids in the sun's atmosphere where magnetic fields open up, allowing solar wind to escape. The hole's nearly vertical magnetic walls and outflowing stream of solar wind stopped this blast in its tracks.

PERSEID RADAR ECHOES: The Perseid meteor shower peaked on Aug. 13th. Full moonlight muted the show for most observers, but it was no problem for the GRAVES space surveillance radar. "Last night was very active with strong signals and lots of Perseids," reports Heiko Ulbricht, who recorded these echoes from his listening station in Freital, Germany:
    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Graveperseid_strip
Located in France, GRAVES scans the skies for satellites, meteors and other space debris passing over Europe. The radar sends a series of 143 MHz pulses straight up, and anything it "pings" is reflected far and wide. Ulbricht listens to the echoes from Germany using a Yagi antenna and receiver tuned to the GRAVES frequency.
"In the screenshot, above, there are two rapidfire Perseids sandwiched between echoes from the full Moon," says Ulbricht. "Listening to GRAVES last night was really fun."
Bonus: Ulbricht also recorded an audio file. Turn up the volume and listen. The two Perseid echoes sound like high-pitched "tweets" doppler-shifted by the meteors' rapid motion through Earth's atmosphere.

The S-shaped filament, called a "sigmoid," re-formed after the explosion. Sigmoids are notoriously unstable, so more eruptions may be in the offing.

SOLAR ACTIVITY IS HIGH: Active sunspot AR3078 has been flaring almost constantly since it developed a delta-class magnetic field early yesterday. The strongest flare so far, an M5-category explosion (image) on August 16th (0758UT), produced a shortwave radio blackout over the Indian Ocean (map). A series of coronal mass ejections (CME) associated with these flares could start grazing Earth's magnetic field during the late hours of Aug. 18th adding their effect to the possible "Cannibal CME event" described below. Solar flare alerts: SMS Text

POTENTIAL 'CANNIBAL CME' EVENT: On Aug. 14th, a dark plasma eruption hurled one CME toward Earth. On Aug. 15th, an exploding magnetic filament launched another right behind it. The two CMEs will arrive together on Aug.18th, according to the latest forecast model from NOAA:

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Cme_model_crop_strip

This could be a "Cannibal CME" event. In other words, the second CME might overtake and gobble up the first, creating a mish-mash of the two. Cannibal CMEs contain tangled magnetic fields and compressed plasmas that sometimes spark strong geomagnetic storms.

In this case, NOAA forecasters expect G1 (minor) to G2-class (moderate) geomagnetic storms. During such storms naked-eye auroras can descend into the USA as far south as New York and Idaho (geomagnetic latitude 55 degrees). Cameras with sensitive night-sky settings may record auroras even farther south than that.

THE IMPACTS HAVE BEGUN: A minor CME hit Earth's magnetic field on Aug. 17th (0303 UT). It could be the first of several CME strikes in the days ahead. NOAA forecasters say their cumulative effect could cause strong G3-class geomagnetic storms, especially on Aug. 18-19. During such storms naked-eye auroras can descend into the USA as far south as Illinois and Oregon (geomagnetic latitude 50 degrees). Cameras with sensitive night-sky settings may record auroras even farther south than that.Solar wind speed: 476.5 km/sec

A COMET WITH TWO TAILS: Something special is happening to Comet C/2017 K2 (PanSTARRS). It's about to plunge through Earth's orbital plane (a.k.a. the ecliptic). The passage is giving us a rare view of the comet's two tails:

Gerald Rhemann took the picture on Aug. 15th using a 12-inch telescope in Farm Tivoli, Namibia. It shows Comet K2's dust tail pointing left, and its gaseous ion tail pointing down almost 90 degrees away.

All comets have two tails. Think about the material vaporizing from a comet's nucleus. It's a mixture of gas and dust. Lightweight gas is blown straight away from the sun by solar wind. Heavier dust lags behind, more closely tracing the comet's orbit. Voilà--two tails. Playing with Comet K2's interactive 3D orbit reveals why the two tails are currently at right angles.

This beautiful geometry will persist for some time. The exact date that Comet K2 passes through the ecliptic plane is Aug. 25th, but it will remain close to the plane for weeks

GEOMAGNETIC UNREST: A CME hit Earth's magnetic field on Aug. 20th at 1812 UT. The weak impact caused an episode of geomagnetic unrest (Kp=4) but not a full-fledged geomagnetic storm. Another similar CME is expected to arrive on Aug. 21st, and it could push Earth's magnetosphere over the threshold of minor G1-class storming. High-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras. Solar wind speed: 548.6 km/sec

HELIANTHUS BOREALIS: Earth's magnetosphere is buzzing with activity. At least three CMEs have hit since Aug. 17th, none with great force, but together sufficient to spark multiple geomagnetic storms and substorms. On Aug. 20th, auroras spilled over the Canadian border into North Dakota:

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Dakotasunflowers_strip

Photographer Elon Gane watched the lights spread over a field of Helianthus annuus--the common sunflower. "The auroras were faint to the naked eye but showed up very nicely in my camera!" says Gane. "They flashed up brightly for about 10 min at 1:30am--and that's when I took the shot."

More auroras may be in the offing. Another CME is expected to graze Earth's magnetic field on Aug. 21st, and NOAA forecasters say there is a chance of G1-class geomagnetic storms on both Aug. 21st and 22nd.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH (UPDATED): Today's M4-class solar flare, described below, hurled a CME into space. NOAA analysts have determined that it will likely hit Earth's magnetic field during the late hours of Aug. 28th. The glancing blow could spark G1-class geomagnetic storms starting on the 28th and stretching into Aug. 29th. Aurora alerts: SMS Text

SOLAR FLARE AND CME: For the second day in a row, the sun is crackling with M-class solar flares. The strongest today, so far, is an M4-class flare from "perpendicular sunspot" AR3088. The blast sent a towering shock wave through the sun's atmosphere, recorded by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory:

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 M4shockwave_strip
    https://spaceweather.com/images2022/27aug22/m4shockwave_strip.gif
Above: The shock wave from an M4-class solar flare on Aug 27th (0240 UT).

Shock waves like this one usually hurl a CME into space. Indeed, SOHO coronagraphs have detected a CME emerging from the blast site.

NOAA forecast models suggest that the CME will sweep up another CME in front of it, possibly forming a "cannibal CME." The combined pair could sideswipe our planet's magnetic field during the late UT hours of Aug. 28th:

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Noaamodel2_strip_opt
    https://spaceweather.com/images2022/27aug22/noaamodel2_strip_opt.gif

A similar NASA model shows the CME completely missing Earth. The disagreement highlights the uncertainty of the forecast. Even glancing-blow CMEs can spark geomagnetic storms, so high-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras on Aug. 28-29 despite the uncertainty.

Meanwhile, sunspot AR3088 is growing and seems poised to unleash an X-flare.

Currently the Schumann Resonance is literally off the charts with lots of solar activity happening.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: Minor G1-class geomagnetic storms are possible starting later today, Aug. 28th, when a CME is expected to graze Earth's magnetic field. It was hurled into space just yesterday by active sunspot AR3088. A high-speed stream of solar wind may be following close behind the CME. Its arrival on Aug. 29th could boost storm levels to category G2.

ANOTHER STRONG SOLAR FLARE: Departing sunspot AR3088 just unleashed another strong solar flare, an M6.7-class explosion shown here in an extreme ultraviolet image from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory:

Radiation from the flare caused a shortwave radio blackout over the Americas: map. Ham radio operators may have noticed unusual propagation effects at frequencies below 20 MHz for as much as an hour after 1619 UT. This flare will almost certainly produce a CME, which will miss Earth because of the blast site's location on the western edge of the sun.

EARTH JUST DODGED A LOT OF CMES: It seemed like sunspot AR3088 would never stop exploding. Over the past four days, the strangely-magnetized active region produced more than a dozen M-class solar flares:

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Fusilade_strip

Each X-ray peak in the graph above produced a corresponding shortwave radio blackout on Earth. No part of our planet was untouched.

More than half of the explosions also produced a coronal mass ejection (CME). Earth dodged them all. Only one and maybe two delivered glancing blows of no consequence. All the rest sailed harmlessly into space.

The simple reason why: AR3088 was never facing Earth. Most of the explosions occurred while the sunspot was approaching or even rounding the sun's western limb.

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Almostx_strip

This movie from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory is a good example. It shows a flare from AR3088 on Aug. 29th partially eclipsed by the edge of the sun. The explosion registered M9 on GOES satellite X-ray sensors, but the uneclipsed flare was probably much stronger--perhaps even an X-flare.

If the sunspot had been facing us, we might now be experiencing strong geomagnetic storms with spectacular low-latitude auroras.

A DANGEROUS SUNSPOT: Sunspot AR3089 has been quiet for days. It might be the calm before the storm. The sunspot has developed a delta-class magnetic field that harbors energy for X-class solar flares. If there is such an eruption (NOAA estimates a 5% chance) it will be geo-effective because the sunspot is almost directly facing Earth. Solar wind speed: 513.6 km/sec

A BIG CME IS ABOUT TO HIT VENUS: A CME billowed away from the farside of the sun on Aug. 30th, and it was spectacular. Coronagraphs onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) recorded a full halo storm cloud:

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Farsidecme_opt

If Earth were in the crosshairs, we would be bracing for a strong geomagnetic storm. Instead, Venus will absorb the blow. NASA models show the CME making a direct hit on the second planet.

The Venus impact on Sept. 1st will not cause a geomagnetic storm. It can't. Venus has no internally-generated global magnetic field. Rather, the impact will erode some atmosphere from Venus's unprotected cloud tops--a process that does not occur on Earth.

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Nasamodel2_crop_strip

Above: A NASA model of the CME. Venus is the green dot. Earth is the yellow dot.

The source of the CME is probably active sunspot AR3088, which left the Earthside of the sun two days ago. This sunspot was extremely active while we could see it from Earth. Now Venus is in the line of fire.

Coincidentally, the European Space Agency's Solar Orbiter spacecraft is currently very close to Venus. That means it can study the CME as it passes by. If explosions from AR3088 continue apace, Solar Orbiter could get great data in the next week as potentially many storm clouds wash over the spacecraft.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH (G2): NOAA forecasters say that G1 (minor) to G2-class (moderate) geomagnetic storms are possible on Sept. 4th when a stream of solar wind is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. The gaseous material is flowing from a large hole in the sun's atmosphere: Solar wind speed: 546.2 km/sec

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Ch_strip
    https://spaceweather.com/images2022/02sep22/ch_strip.jpg
Above: An ultraviolet image of the sun taken by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory

This is a "coronal hole," a place where the sun's magnetic field opens up and allows solar wind to escape from the sun's corona. It looks dark because glowing-hot plasma that should be there is gone. It's on its way to Earth.

If the geomagnetic storm materializes as predicted, auroras could be visible in the USA as far south as Idaho and New York (geomagnetic latitude 50 degrees).

SOLAR WIND SPARKS GEOMAGNETIC STORM: As predicted, a stream of solar wind hit Earth on Sept. 4th, sparking a G2-class geomagnetic storm. "The sky exploded with dancing shapes and pillars," reports Greg Ash of Ely, Minnesota, who photographed his son and daughter-in-law enjoying the light show: Solar wind speed: 658.8 km/sec

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Mn2_striphttps://spaceweather.com/images2022/04sep22/mn2_strip.jpg

"This is just a single image--not a composite," notes Ash. "The auroras were very visible to the naked eye."

The solar wind causing this storm is flowing from a large hole in the sun's atmosphere. The hole is so large, we might be inside its exhaust for another 24-36 hours. High-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras.

SUBSIDING STORM: Yesterday's G2-class geomagnetic storm, described below, is almost over. Cracks in Earth's magnetic field that allowed solar wind to penetrate on Sept. 4th are closing on Sept. 5th. Only a few minor G1-class storms are expected today as the event winds down. Solar wind speed: 543.5 km/sec

A SCREAMING GOOD GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A stream of solar wind hit Earth on Sept. 4th, sparking a G2-class geomagnetic storm. When the auroras appeared over Oregon, "even people who didn't know about space weather saw them and started screaming!" reports Andrew Harvey, who sends this picture from Crown Point overlooking the Columbia River:

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Crownpoint_strip
"It was a magnificent show," says Harvey. "The auroras became very bright to the naked eye."

The solar wind stream that caused the display blew out of a large hole in the sun's atmosphere. NOAA forecasters knew it was coming and successfully predicted a G2-class storm. However, the storm lasted longer than anyone expected--almost 24 hours. Auroras spread across the USA from Maine to Washington.

In Iceland, the auroras were so bright the landscape turned green:

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Justgreen_strip

"If this is how the season is starting, I can't wait to see what will happen next," says photographer Wioleta Gorecka of Kleifarvatn. "Last night taught me to dream."

These incredible displays were a combined result of two factors: (1) the solar wind was blowing very fast, at one point topping 700 km/s; and (2) a series of cracks opened in Earth's magnetic field, allowing the solar wind to penetrate deeply. It was a perfect G2-storm.

ECHOES FROM A FARSIDE SUNSPOT: There is a sunspot on the farside of the sun so large it is affecting the way the sun vibrates. Take a look at this helioseismic map. The large dark region is an echo of a farside spot--probably AR3088, which may have grown dramatically since we last saw it on the Earthside of the sun in August. Solar wind speed: 546.8 km/sec

A MAJOR EXPLOSION ON THE FARSIDE OF THE SUN: Something just exploded on the farside of the sun. NASA's STEREO-A spacecraft recorded a magnificent full-halo CME emerging during the late hours of Sept. 5th:

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Farsidecme_opt
    https://spaceweather.com/images2022/06sep22/farsidecme_opt.gif
    This is incredible.. 9/5/22

A NASA model of the CME predicts that it will hit Venus on Sept. 7th. (See the model here.) The impact will not cause a geomagnetic storm. It can't. Venus has no internally-generated global magnetic field. Instead, the impact will erode some atmosphere from Venus's unprotected cloudtops--a process that does not occur on Earth.

Coincidentally, Europe's Solar Orbiter spacecraft just performed a very close flyby of Venus (only 6420 km away) to adjust its orbit around the sun. That means Solar Orbiter will be able to observe the CME and its impact at point blank range.

The spacecraft has already been hit by a wave of energetic particles, as shown in these data from its EPD/Suprathermal Ion Spectrograph instrument:

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Sep_crop_strip2

The instrument's principal investigator, George Ho of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, shared the data on Twitter shortly after the explosion. Ho estimates the particle fluxes to be 10 times stronger than NOAA's radiation warning threshold; if these particles were hitting Earth, we would call it an S2-class radiation storm.

The source of this explosion (probably an X-class flare) is probably old sunspot AR3088, now transiting the farside of the sun. Apparently it has grown even more active since we last saw it on the Earthside in August.

CO-ROTATING INTERACTION REGION: NOAA forecasters say that a CIR (co-rotating interaction region) could hit Earth's magnetic field on Sept. 17th. CIRs are transition zones between slow- and fast-moving solar wind streams. Solar wind plasma piles up in these regions, producing shock-like structures that can mimic CMEs and spark bright Arctic auroras.

THE STARLINK INCIDENT: A minor geomagnetic storm is supposed to be minor. That's why even experts were surprised on Feb. 4, 2022, when dozens of Starlink satellites started falling out of the sky. A weak CME had hit Earth's magnetic field, and the resulting G1-class (minor) storm was bringing them down:

"Although it was only 'minor,' the storm pumped almost 1200 gigawatts of energy into Earth's atmosphere," explains lead author Tong Dang of the University of Science and Technology of China. "This extra energy heated Earth's upper atmosphere and sharply increased aerodynamic drag on the satellites."

Near X Class Solar Flare, Pole Shift Claims Another Effect | S0 News Sep.16.2022

WHAT'S OVER THE HORIZON? A big sunspot group is approaching from just behind the sun's southeastern limb. We have seen it before. It is AR3089, which was undergrowing a growth spurt as it exited the solar disk in early September. Now it is returning after a two week trip around the farside of the sun, perhaps even bigger than before. Solar flare alerts: SMS Text.

DODGING SOLAR STORMS: How long can Earth keep dodging solar storms? Departing sunspot AR3098 unleashed five M-class solar flares as it was going around the edge of the sun this weekend. One of them (M8 on Sept. 16th) was almost an X-flare:

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Fiveflares_strip

Because AR3098 was not facing Earth, all of the flares were muted in their effect, and none produced an Earth-directed CME. Add them to the list of dozens of misses since August--all produced by departing sunspots.

The sun is shooting like an Imperial Storm Trooper. Don't get used to it, though. As Solar Cycle 25 unfolds, a stray hit is inevitable. Solar flare alerts: SMS Text.

MARTIAN COLD FRONT: Mars is approaching Earth for a close encounter in early December. Already the red planet is big enough to see in detail through backyard telescopes. Last week, amateur astronomer Tim Wilson watched a cold front spill out of the Martian north pole:

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Coldfront_crop_strip

"The images show dust being raised behind the front," notes Wilson. Indeed, this is one way dust storms get started on Mars.

Bright and red, Mars can be found rising in the east around midnight. The planet will continue to grow and brighten throughout October and November until, by early December, it will be brighter than any star in the sky. Only Jupiter, Venus and the Moon will outshine it. Start watching now!

SIMULTANEOUS EXPLOSIONS ON THE SUN: Yesterday, Sept. 18th, the sun's southern hemisphere convulsed all at once. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) recorded three apparently simultaneous explosions more than a million kilometers apart:

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Triple_crop_strip_lab2

Coincidence? Maybe not. Twelve summers ago, SDO witnessed an even bigger eruption with a dozen significant shock waves, flares, filament eruptions, and CMEs spanning 180 degrees of solar longitude. Researchers studying the event realized that the blasts were a chain reaction connected by wide-ranging faults ("separatrices") in the sun's global magnetic field. Yesterday's event may have been the same.

A CME left the sun following the triple explosion, but the jury's still out on whether it will hit Earth. NOAA analysts are modeling the cloud's trajectory now.

BIG SUNSPOT ALERT: A second large sunspot is emerging over the sun's southeastern limb, joining AR3105, which itself has doubled in size since yesterday. If you have a solar telescope, point your optics here. Solar flare alerts: SMS Text.

AN EXPLOSION OF AURORAS OVER NORWAY: Last night in Tromsø, Norway, there was an explosion of auroras so intense "it made my guests scream and laugh at the same time," says aurora tour guide Markus Varik. "We had no idea the night would turn out like this!"

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Explosion_strip

"There were swirls, spikes, curtains, draperies, you name it," says Varik. "We must be getting close to the equinox."

Indeed, that's exactly what's happening. The northern autumnal equinox is only 3 days away and, as all Arctic sky watchers know, auroras love equinoxes.

Researchers call it the "Russell-McPherron effect." During the weeks around equinoxes, cracks form in Earth's magnetic field. Even a slight gust of solar wind can slip through to spark a light show--no geomagnetic storm required.

MINOR CME IMPACT: A minor (almost imperceptible) CME swept past NOAA's DSCOVR spacecraft on Sept. 30th at 0430 UT, striking Earth 49 minutes later. No geomagnetic storms are expected as a result of the weak impact.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH (G2 CLASS): NOAA forecasters say that G2-class geomagnetic storms are possible on Oct. 1st in response to a double blow: (1) A solar wind stream is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field; it is flowing from an equatorial hole in the sun's atmosphere. (2) A CME will pass very close to Earth, potentially grazing our planet; it left the sun on Sept. 28th. This is what happened during the last G2-storm, so stay tuned! Solar wind speed: 525.6 km/sec

SOMETHING FLARE-Y THIS WAY COMES: A large and active sunspot group is about to rotate over the sun's northeastern limb. We can see it coming from the turmoil visible above the horizon:

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Limbactivity_strip
    https://spaceweather.com/images2022/30sep22/limbactivity_strip.gif

It has already produced an M1-class solar flare (Sept. 30th at 0400 UT) partially eclipsed by the edge of the sun. The unobstructed flare was probably much stronger.

Helioseismologists have been tracking this sunspot group for more than a week. It is altering the way the whole sun vibrates, creating a dark echo in acoustic maps of the farside of the sun. Soon we will see it with our own eyes. The first dark cores should emerge this weekend.

WEEKEND AURORA WATCH: This weekend, a high-speed stream of solar wind is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. Its impact could spark a G1 (minor) to G2-class (moderate) geomagnetic storm with auroras at high latitudes. The incoming stream is flowing from an equatorial hole in the sun's atmosphere. Aurora alerts: SMS Text

THE AURORA THAT'S NOT AN AURORA: On Sept. 26th, a CME struck Earth's magnetic field. During the resulting geomagnetic storm (G2), auroras spread as far south as Missouri. Upon closer inspection, some of the auroras were not auroras. Here is an example from Glidden, Wisconsin:

SARs are red arcs of light that ripple across the sky during some geomagnetic storms. They were discovered in 1956 at the beginning of the Space Age. Researchers didn’t know what they were and unwittingly gave them a misleading name: "Stable Auroral Red arcs" or SARs.

In fact, SARs are neither stable nor auroras. Auroras appear when charged particles rain down from space, hitting the atmosphere and causing it to glow like the picture tube of an old color TV. SARs form differently. They are a sign of heat energy leaking into the upper atmosphere from Earth’s ring current system--a donut-shaped circuit of plasma carrying millions of amps around our planet.

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 8 Sar_space_strip
Above: SARs photographed by the Dynamics Explorer-1 satellite in 1982.

SARs are among the reddest things in the sky, with a monochromatic glow at 6300 Å that comes from atomic oxygen in the upper atmosphere. The human eye is relatively insensitive to light at this wavelength, but cameras catch them easily. Pro tip for photographers: Use a 6300 Å filter.

If a geomagnetic storm occurs this weekend (NOAA says "yes"), be alert not only for auroras, but also for auroras not.

Massive Solar Storm to Hit Earth by Thursday

Scientists have warned a huge mass of plasma from the Sun is set to hit Earth by Thursday, and could cause a geomagnetic storm that will threaten power networks and satellites.

This event is described as only “moderate” - but severe solar storms (which come about once a century) would likely plunge the world into an "Internet apocalypse”.

Humans are not likely to be directly affected by the mass coronal ejection, and might even be treated to an aurora in parts of America.

CHANCE OF FLARES TODAY: Behemoth sunspot AR3112 is poised to explode. NOAA forecasters estimate a 65% chance of M-flares and a 30% chance of X-flares today. Any eruptions will be geoeffective as the sunspot is almost directly faciing Earth. Solar wind speed: 519.2 km/sec

OH SNAP! A MAGNETIC FILAMENT ERUPTS: Yesterday, Oct. 4th, a 200,000-km long filament of magnetism in the sun's southern hemisphere erupted. Snapping like a rubber band, it hurled part of itself into space:

Debris from the blast might be heading for Earth. SOHO coronagraphs saw hints of a CME emerging from the blast site--but the data stream stopped before the full CME was visible. The missing data should arrive later today.

It is the flash of a firefly in the night, the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.
