MANY FARSIDE SUNSPOTS: Helioseismic maps of the farside of the sun show multiple large active regions, probably sunspots. This means the sunspot number should remain high as the sun turns on its axis in the weeks ahead. Disappearing Earthside sunspots will be replaced by farside counterparts. Solar flare alerts: SMS Text

M-CLASS SOLAR FLARE: Sunspot AR3331 exploded on June 9th (1711 UT), producing an M2.5-class solar flare. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured the extreme ultraviolet flash:

A pulse of radiation ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere. This, in turn, caused a minor blackout of shortwave radio transmissions over the Gulf of Mexico: map. Mariners may have noticed loss of signal at frequencies below 15 MHz for as much as 30 minutes after the flare.

Priviously, this sunspot was not thought to pose a threat for strong solar flares. AR3331 may have some tricks up its sleeve as it turns toward Earth this weekend.

MINOR GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: NOAA forecasters say that a CME might graze Earth's magnetic field on July 1st. It was launched into space three days ago by an erupting magnetic filament in the sun's northern hemisphere. The glancing blow, if it occurs, could spark a minor G1-class geomagnetic storm.

GIANT SUNSPOT ALERT: When this week began, sunspot AR3354 didn't exist. Now it is 10 times wider than Earth and still growing. The sunspot burst into view on June 27th, breaching the surface of the sun, then blossoming into a giant over the next 48 hours: movie.

AR3354 is so big, amateur astronomers can see details normally reserved for the world's greatest telescopes. Michael Karrer sends this picture of the sunspot's dark heart from his backyard observatory in Austria.

"Despite its gigantic size, the sunspot was not as easy to photograph as I expected," says Karrer. "The jetstream brought variable seeing to my observatory. But in a few moments of fair conditions I was able to capture this high-resolution image."

Karrer's photo shows that the sunspot's heart is not completely dark. It is peppered by "umbral dots"--incandescent balls of plasma rising and falling in the sunspot's core. Researchers believe they are turbulent convection cells, which dredge up heat from ~1000 km below. The same kind of motions can be seen in a pan of water boiling on a hot stove. The photo also resolves hundreds of "penumbral filaments," fine magnetic tubes that transport energy out of the sunspot.

Solar Cycle 25’s Maximum Might Arrive Earlier And Hit Harder

Now They Are Actually Working On A Plan To Block Out The Sun

Who said that every 12,000 yrs (or so) a coronal mass ejection occurs and humanity has a 'great rest'? At the moment, his name escapes me. Very few survive it, only those underground.

~NightSky

By Tyler Durden

Solar Cycle 25 has been underway since April 2019. Ever since the cycle began, the sun has become more active, unleashing solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and geomagnetic storms, with at least one scientist warning solar maximum could arrive ahead of schedule, and that’s not great news for the digital economy here on Earth.

The current solar cycle has a forecasted peak sometime in 2025. In December 2022, the total number of sunspots was at its highest in eight years, indicating solar activity was ramping up. Earlier this year, scientists observed twice as many sunspots — red flags that solar maximum could be nearing.

Another indication of increased solar activity is the number and intensity of solar flares:

In 2022, there were fivefold more C-class and M-class solar flares than there were in 2021, and year on year, the number of the most powerful, X-class solar flares is also increasing, according to SpaceWeatherLive.com. The first half of 2023 logged more X-class flares than in all of 2022, and at least one has directly hit Earth. (Solar flare classes include A, B, C, M and X, with each class being at least 10 times more powerful than the previous one.) — Live Science

What’s concerning is a solar physicist at the University of College London, XXXX offames, told Live Science that the sun’s increase in solar activity is a warning sign the solar maximum could arrive by the end of this year. He said the initial forecast was for 2025.

All this evidence suggests that Solar Cycle 25 is “going to peak earlier, and it’s going to peak higher than expected,” James said.

Other solar physicists have told the science publication very similar forecasts. They warned: “We are poorly prepared.”

BIG SUNSPOT ALERT: A new and apparently large sunspot is emerging over the sun's southeastern limb, right here. Helioseismic echoes from the farside of the sun suggest this may be the leading edge of an even larger sunspot group. Stay tuned for updates as the sun's rotation brings this region into better view.

https://www.facebook.com/789438668/posts/10161096568813669/

A rapidly-growing sunspot numbered “AR3354” is five times wider than Earth.

It supposedly did not exist yesterday and has suddenly come into view.

If it explodes with flares, they will be strong and possibly Earth-directed.

This is not unlikely since solar energetics tend to be more powerful prior to a Full Moon than a New Moon, and we have a “Super Full Moon” arriving on July 3rd—just under a week away.

Thus, our lunar orb is growing and already “pulling” on our planet and its waters.

Strong storms and quakes have occurred around the world along with tremendous heat in certain places.

In the USA, for example, the state of Texas is in a zone whereby temperatures have exceeded “100” degrees (38 °C), with some states in the southern and eastern regions reporting temperatures of “113” degrees (45 °C) and more.

Humidity makes these numbers seem even higher. These numbers are dangerous for places that are not used to these kinds of degrees—especially this early in the year.

In particular African and Middle Eastern nations, for example, temperatures over “100” are usual in July and August, but when the atmosphere is not humid, and when these are normal seasonal temperatures, people seem to just casually move about during the day and evening.

Decades ago on my first trip to Egypt in the month of July, when my traveling companions and I came out of the airport, we were met in our faces with extreme heat, and we were told that it was unusually humid for that time of year and that the temperature was “120” degrees!

A reading of “90” degrees would not have seemed so problematic because, after all, it sometimes can be that hot in certain places in the USA in the summertime.

However, “120” was somewhat anxiety-producing. By the time we went to “Abu Simbel” a few days later, it was over the initial arrival rating of “120”.

Each day we appreciated returning to our air-conditioned hotel even though we enjoyed studying the ancient sites.

I was happy that the lecturing I did while there was inside and not outside. Of course, certain ancient ceremonies were conducted outside, but by that time, we had become accustomed to the heat.

The generally higher temperatures around the world in both the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere herald the climate changes that “Mama Earth” is experiencing.

There is more LIGHT coming from inside and outside of our solar system daily.

The LIGHT can cause heat on and within the planet and creation residing here.

Our entire solar system moving through the first of twelve vortices of the whole “Photon Belt” vortex produces heat.

The heat releases excess energy from the electrons and protons that are flooding the human body.

The mitochondria (the information-carrying aspect of our DNA) is becoming capable of accepting stronger photons (LIGHT) even though the process of doing this is uncomfortable physically, emotionally, and mentally as cleansing occurs along with LIGHT reception as has been discussed numerous times.

The human system is moving away from electro-magnetism being the main way of sending messages throughout the nervous system.

Crystalline energy deals much better with the atoms and molecules of ionization (penetrating and altering energies) of high-powered radiation such as the positively-charging protons that are zooming into our planet’s far side almost daily as they penetrate the magnetosphere.

It seems, therefore, that we are being protected from mankind’s follies that caused the depletion of the magnetosphere which has allowed the protons to enter the earthly domain.

A two-phase procedure is happening as “crystallization” occurs.

On one hand, collective consciousness is being offered opportunities to elevate, and on the other hand, our cellular structures are being transformed so that we can carry more LIGHT—more “Bio-Photons” (“Life LIGHT”) from SOURCE.

The higher that consciousness becomes, the higher the vibration. The higher the vibration, the greater the LIGHT. The greater the LIGHT, the purer the form.

In brief, material density is being released. This is one of the reasons why eating fresh organic (without toxic chemicals) foods and drinking spring water is so important.
Eating heavy meals (especially with lots of meat) can impede the process of receiving necessary LIGHT.

Many people are reporting feeling less hungry, and many are regularly drinking more smoothies.

We are receiving very high energy from our galaxy’s center and as we travel, as mentioned above, throughout the “Photon Belt” and as profound and prolific energetic currents from many arenas surge into our planet.

Sunspots, for instance, have increased in number over a long while and explode more often with mid-strength “C-Class”, strong “M-Class”, and tremendously powerful “X-Class” flares as they receive their energies from the “Great Central Sun”.

A cosmic production is continually being performed, and we are “on-stage” with it.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: NOAA forecasters say that G1-class geomagnetic storms are possible on July 7th when a partial halo CME is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. It was hurled in our direction July 4th by an explosion in the magnetic canopy of sunspot AR3359.

A SUNSPOT SO BIG YOU CAN SEE IT FROM MARS: A huge sunspot (AR3363) just emerged over the sun's southeastern limb. Mars rover Perseverance saw it before we did. On July 2nd, the rover's mast-mounted stereo camera (MASTCAM-Z) tilted up to the sky above Jezaro crater and photographed a deep-black dot on the solar disk:

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Marsspots_strip

Perseverance does this all the time. Using a solar filter, the rover looks at the sun almost every day to check its brightness. When the sun dims, researchers know a dust storm is brewing--one of the most important forms of weather on the Red Planet.

Sunspots are just a bonus. A recent study shows that Perseverance sees more than 40% of all sunspots despite the fact that Mars is 78 million km farther from the sun than Earth and the rover's camera doesn't put many pixels across the solar disk. It is able to resolve about 10% of the biggest sunspots into multiple pixels.

Perseverance has one big advantage. It can see parts of the sun we cannot. From where Mars is currently located, Perseverance views more than half the sun's farside, giving it a preview of sunspots still hidden from Earth. That's how the rover spotted AR3363 days in advance.

People on Earth saw the sunspot for the first time on July 5th:

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Incoming_strip
"A very big sunspot is coming!" says photographer Philippe Tosi of Nîmes, France, who inserted an image of Earth for scale.

July 12th EARTH-DIRECTED CME (UPDATED): A magnetic filament in the sun's southern hemisphere erupted on July 11th (movie #1) and hurled a CME toward Earth (movie #2). According to a NASA model, most of the CME will sail south of our planet, but not all. The northern flank will likely strike our planet's magnetic field during the late hours of July 14th possibly causing a G1-class geomagnetic storm.

A HYPERACTIVE SUNSPOT: New sunspot AR3372 is seething with activity. In the last 24 hours alone it has produced eight M-class solar flares (graph) To the extreme ultraviolet telescopes onboard NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, it looks like the northeastern limb of the sun is on fire:

https://www.spaceweather.com/images2023/12jul23/flame2_crop_strip2.jpg

The rat-a-tat-tat of solar flares from AR3372 is causing a rolling series of shortwave radio blackouts around all longitudes of our planet. Ham radio operators, mariners and aviators may have noticed loss of signal below 30 MHz on multiple occasions since July 11th. In addition, episodes of sudden ionization in the atmosphere are doppler-shifting the frequency of time-standard radio stations such as Canada's CHU and America's WWV (data).

If current trends continue, we should expect more strong M-class flares during the next 24 hours with a chance of X-flares as well. This sunspot will become even more geoeffective in the days ahead as it continues to turn toward Earth. Solar flare alerts: SMS Text

HAVE YOU SEEN YOUR VENUS SHADOW? When the sun goes down tonight, step outside and face west. Venus is dazzling in the evening twilight. According to JPL's Horizons ephemeris, Venus's brightness is peaking this week at magnitude -4.71, almost 200 times brighter than a 1st magnitude star. It's so bright, it's casting shadows:

https://www.spaceweather.com/images2023/12jul23/Tuomi1_strip.jpg
Tenho Tuomi of Lucky Lake, Saskatchewan, took this picture in Sept. 2007 when Venus was about as bright as it is now. "Venus projected the shadow of my telescope on the house wall," he recalls. "I captured the effect with a 6-minute exposure at ISO 800."

To experience your own Venus shadow, chose a dark place--very dark--far away from city lights. Go there just after sunset. Let your eyes fully dark-adapt as the silvery light of the Evening Star illuminates your face. Now turn around. What do you see?

========

July 11th GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: Minor G1-class geomagnetic storms are possible on July 13th when a CME is expected to pass close to Earth. NASA and NOAA models of the CME give different results. NASA predicts a glancing blow, NOAA a clean miss. Either way, a close encounter could disturb Earth's magnetic field and produce high latitude auroras. Aurora alerts: SMS Text

SOMETHING FLARE-Y THIS WAY COMES: A big new sunspot is emerging over the sun's northeastern limb, and it is crackling with solar flares. The strongest so far, an M6-class explosion on July 11th (1808 UT), saturated pixels in the telescope system onboard NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory:

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 M6_teal_anim_crop_opt

The extreme ultraviolet flash ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere, creating a shortwave radio blackout over North America (map) and doppler-shifting the frequency of America's WWV time-standard radio transmissions (data).

In total, this active region has produced 5 M-class solar flares in the past 12 hours. An X-class flare may be in the offing. Solar flare alerts: SMS Text

VENUS AT MAXIMUM BRIGHTNESS: When the sun goes down tonight, step outside and look west. Venus is shining like a beacon in the twilight sky--and this week it is at maximum brightness. Jeff Dai photographed the second planet from Nanjing tulou, Fujian, China:

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Venus_strip

"Venus is dazzling," says Dai. "The planet's week of maximum brightness coincides with another luminous event. The fireflies in southern China are very active right now. Many of them can be seen in the picture."

According to JPL's Horizons ephemeris, Venus peaks in brightness on July 12th and 13th at magnitude -4.71. That's almost 200 times brighter than a 1st magnitude star. It might even be bright enough to cast shadows.

Bonus: Got a backyard telescope? Point it at Venus. Like the Moon, Venus has phases, and at the moment it is a beautifully slender crescent

BIG FARSIDE SUNSPOTS: We can't see them, but they are there. Multiple large sunspots are crossing the farside of the sun. Helioseismic maps show where they are located. On Mars, the Perseverance rover can see two of them using its low-resolution MASTCAM camera. They are whoppers.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH (UPDATED): NOAA forecasters say that minor G1-class geomagnetic storms are possible on July 14th when a CME is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. SOHO coronagraphs watched the lopsided halo leave the sun on July 11th:

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Cme_anim_dice_opt
https://www.spaceweather.com/images2023/11jul23/cme_anim_dice_opt.gif

This CME was hurled into space by an erupting magnetic filament in the sun's southern hemisphere. Because of the explosion's southerly location, most of the CME will sail south of our planet. A glancing blow from its northern flank, however, may be enough to cause a minor geomagnetic storm.

THE BASTILLE DAY EVENT: You know a solar flare is strong when even the Voyager spacecraft feel it. Twenty-three years ago today (July 14, 2000) the sun exploded with so much force, it sent shockwaves to the edge of the solar system.

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Eit195
SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Lasco

Above: SOHO images of the X5.7-class Bastille Day solar flare (left) and CME (right). Blinding "snow" in the images is a result of energetic protons hitting the spacecraft

At about 11 a.m. in western Europe, where Bastille Day celebrations were underway in France, Earth-orbiting satellites reported an X5.7-class solar flare. Within the hour, energetic particles accelerated by the flare reached our planet. Protons and electrons hit the atmosphere and created a cascade of radiation that reached all the way to the ground--a rare "GLE."

"People flying in commercial jets at high latitudes would have received double their usual radiation dose," says Clive Dyer of the University of Surrey Space Centre in Guildford UK, who studies extreme space weather. "It was quite an energetic event--one of the strongest of the past 20 years."

A day later the CME arrived. Its impact on July 15, 2000, sparked an extreme (Kp=9) geomagnetic storm. The sun had just set on the east coast of North America when the auroras appeared.

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Redauroras
Red auroras over Troutman, North Carolina, on July 15, 2000. Credit: Ronnie Sherrill

"I was out in the yard doing chores and saw bright red auroras overhead," recalls Uwe Heine of Caswell County, North Carolina. "I called over to our neighbor, Carrie, who was also outside. I told her those were not sunset colors. It was an aurora, and super rare to see this far south!"

In New York, the sky exploded with light, recalls Lou Michael Moure. "I was living on Long Island at the time. A family member came running into my room, begging me to come outside to see 'the sky on fire.' Hues of white and green eventually gave way to reds that blanketed the heavens from horizon to horizon."

By the time the storm subsided on July 16, 2000, auroras had been reported as far south as Texas, Florida and Mexico.

The Bastille Day Event is special to researchers. It was the first major solar storm after the 1995 launch of SOHO, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. Data from the young satellite taught researchers a lot, very quickly, about the physics of extreme flares.

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Fig6_strip

Above: A modern MHD computer simulation of the Bastille Day explosion. Credit: Tibor Török et al., The Astrophysical Journal, 856:75 (22pp), 2018 March 2

Tibor Török of Predictive Science, Inc., is one of many researchers still studying the Bastille Day Event. He recently applied a modern magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) computer model to some of the data, and found that 1033 ergs of magnetic energy were released in the explosion--about the same as a thousand billion WWII atomic bombs.

No wonder the Voyagers felt it.

It took the Bastille Day CME months to reach the distant spacecraft--180 days to Voyager 2, and 245 days to Voyager 1. Being near the edge of the solar system, both spacecraft were normally bathed in high levels of cosmic rays. The CME swept aside that ambient radiation, creating a temporary reduction called a "Forbush Decrease." Conditions did not return to normal until 3 to 4 months later. Finally, the storm was over.

CME IMPACT AND GEOMAGNETIC STORM: Arriving a full day earlier than expected, a CME hit Earth's magnetic field on July 16th: data. The impact at 1920 UT caused a 20 nT jolt in the USGS's magnetometer at Fredericksburg, Virginia, and a G1-class geomagnetic storm. More CME impacts are possible on July 17th and 18th due to multiple recent eruptions from big sunspot AR3363. Solar wind speed: 558.8 km/sec

FLOATING IN AN OCEAN OF AIRGLOW: Surging solar activity is amplifying a phenomenon most people have never seen: Airglow. Dan Bush photographed a magnificent display on July 13th from his home in Albany, Missouri:

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Airglow_dice_strip_opt
https://www.spaceweather.com/images2023/16jul23/airglow_dice_strip_opt.gif

"It was almost like I was floating in an ocean of airglow," says Bush. "The faint rippling lights moved primarily from south to north in waves similar to what one would see in cirrus clouds or ocean waves. Often times my cameras pick up little to no airglow, but this evening was exceptional."

Airglow is produced by photochemistry in Earth's upper atmosphere. There is a thin layer of air 95 km high where oxygen atoms (O) and oxygen molecules (O2) mix together. When O bumps into O2, the collision creates a spark of green light--airglow.

Solar Max is boosting this process. Right now, the active sun is heating Earth's upper atmosphere, increasing the rate of O vs. O2 collisions. Brighter-than-normal airglow is the result.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: Intermittent G1-class geomagnetic storms are possible for the next 2 days as Earth's magnetic field reverberates from a series of CME impacts and near misses since July 16th. The storms could intensify to category G2 or G3 on July 20th when a new and more potent CME arrives. See below. Aurora alerts: SMS Text

A SIGNIFICANT EXPLOSION ON THE SUN (UPDATED): We've been waiting for this. Big sunspot AR3363 just produced a significant solar flare, a long-duration M6-class event during the early hours of July 18th. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the blast near the sun's southwestern limb:

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Bigone_strip_opt
https://spaceweather.com/images2023/17jul23/bigone_strip_opt.gif

Energetic protons accelerated by the flare have reached Earth and are now peppering the top of our planet's atmosphere. This is called a "radiation storm." According to data from NOAA's GOES-16 satellite, it is a category S2 event.

Although the explosion was not X-class, it was more powerful than many X-flares would be. Why? Because it lasted so long. The flare's X-ray output was above M5 for more than an hour and above M1 for nearly 4 hours. It had plenty of time to lift a substantial CME out of the sun's atmosphere.

Indeed, SOHO coronagraphs have since detected a bright CME emerging from the blast site:

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Lopsidedhalo_opt
https://spaceweather.com/images2023/18jul23/lopsidedhalo_opt.gif

The snowy speckles in this image are energetic protons striking SOHO's camera system

Although the CME is not heading directly for Earth, it appears to have an Earth-directed component. A NASA model suggests it could deliver an effective glancing blow as early as July 20th (0000 UT). NOAA is doing their own modeling, and results should be available soon.

Our preliminary forecast: The CME's flank will reach Earth on July 20th. Its impact could spark G1 to G2-class geomagnetic storms, with a slight chance of G3.

A SUNSPOT VISIBLE FROM MARS: There is a sunspot on the farside of the sun so large it is visible from Mars. Perseverance saw it yesterday during a routine check of the sun. The rover monitors the brightness of the sun over Jezero crater as a way of detecting Martian dust storms. The sunspot will turn toward Earth early next week.

PROTONS ARE HITTING EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE: Yesterday, a magnificent eruption near the sun's northwestern limb hurled a cloud of energetic protons toward Earth. They are hitting our planet today, causing an S1-class solar radiation storm. The main effect of the storm is a Polar Cap Absorption (PCA) event:

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Pca_strip

Red zones in this global map show where shortwave transmissions are being absorbed. Frequencies below 15 MHz are almost completely blacked out, while anything below 35 MHz is being attentuated, at least a little.

What's causing this? It's all those protons. Earth's magnetic field funnels the particles toward the poles where their ionizing effect causes the absorption of shortwave radio. The PCA is intensifying; you can can monitor its progress here.

A CME IS ABOUT TO SLAM INTO MERCURY: A bright CME that left the sun earlier today is hours away from slamming into Mercury, according to a NASA model. The impact will pepper Mercury with high energy electrons. New research shows that this will probably ignite X-ray auroras at ground level on Mercury's rocky surface. AURORA alerts: SMS Text

M IS FOR 'MAGNIFICENT': Departing sunspot AR3372 erupted on July 28th (1558 UT), producing an M4-class solar flare and a magnificent plume of debris:

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 M4_anim_strip

The fiery loop that catapulted away from the sun was wide enough to swallow about 20 planet Earths. It won't be swallowing our planet, though, because it is heading in the wrong direction. Like several other significant explosions in July, this one will miss Earth.

EARTH'S RING CURRENT IS LEAKING: Did you know that Earth has rings? Unlike Saturn's rings, which are vast disks of glittering ice, Earth's rings are made of electricity--a donut-shaped circuit carrying millions of amps around our planet. On July 26th, heat from this ring current leaked into the upper atmosphere, creating a red arc over Slocan, British Columbia:

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Sar_strip

I almost fell over when I checked my camera," says photographer Harlan Thomas. "There was one of the brightest SAR arcs that I have seen! It lasted around 45 minutes."

SARs were discovered in 1956 at the beginning of the Space Age. At first, researchers didn’t know what they were and unwittingly gave them a misleading name: "Stable Auroral Red arcs." However, they are not auroras; the red glow comes from Earth's ring current system.

The ring current springs a leak most often during geomagnetic storms. Indeed, a G1-class storm was underway at the time of Thomas's sighting. That, however, was just a minor storm. Stronger storms and bigger leaks are in the offing as Solar Cycle 25 intensifies.

Solar flares hitting Earth now during a Full Moon

Two recent solar storms have launched significant energetic flux away from the Sun and towards Earth, and the first of these coronal mass ejections is expected to impact Earth and trigger a geomagnetic storm on August 1st, occurring simultaneously during a full moon.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH (G1): Minor G1-class geomagnetic storms are possible on Aug. 4th-5th when one or more CMEs are expected to hit Earth. The CMEs were hurled in our direction by a combination of events--namely, the eruption of a magnetic filament on July 31st plus multiple M-class eruptions from active sunspot AR3380 on Aug. 1st and 2nd. Aurora alerts: SMS Text

BRIGHT FIREBALL RATTLES THE EASTERN USA: This morning just after 2 a.m. EDT, sonic booms rolled across the eastern USA, shaking buildings hard enough to wake observers. Sky watchers looked up and saw a brilliant fireball tearing itself apart overhead. Amateur astronomer Bill Stewart of Ceredo, West Virginia, was outside on his rooftop observatory and accidentally videoed his own reaction to the booming flash:

"It was at 2:13 a.m.," says Stewart. "The fireball made two audible booms. After one bright flash it broke into 3 distinct fragments. One remained bright as it descended below the horizon. It could have possibly touched down although I didn’t hear it impact."

The American Meteor Society has collected more than 65 eyewitness reports from 9 US states. The fireball first appeared over Ohio, streaked south, then petered out over Georgia. Observers said "it flashed like lightning," "it shook my house," and "I've never seen anything like it."

At its peak, the fireball outshined the supermoon also visible in Stewart's video:

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Splash

"I agree it was brighter," says Stewart. "The reflection of the fireball was cast on a metal roof below, quite vividly, whereas the Moon was not as reflective."

There are currently three active meteor showers capable of producing bright fireballs: The Perseids, Alpha Capricornids, and Southern Delta Aquariids. However, the fireball's path through the sky doesn't match any of those showers.

It may have been a random meteoroid--also known as a "sporadic." Random meteoroids hit Earth all the time as our planet plows through old clouds of comet dust and asteroid debris, which litter interplanetary space. On any dark night you can see a handful of bright sporadics. This fireball, however, may be exceptional. According to NASA statistics, sporadic fireballs exceeding supermoon brightness disintegrate in Earth's atmosphere no more than once every year or so.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH (G2): Geomagnetic storms are possible tomorrow when two CMEs might hit Earth. A new NOAA model shows the two CMEs leaving the sun on Aug. 5th, then merging to form a single 'cannibal CME' that delivers a glancing blow to Earth on Aug. 8th. Cannibal CMEs are famous for causing strong geomagnetic storms, and even a glancing blow can be effective. In this case, storm levels could reach category G2 (Moderate) with a slight chance of escalating to G3 (Strong).

ANOTHER X-CLASS SOLAR FLARE (UPDATED): Earth is dodging some big solar storms. For the second time in 3 days, departing sunspot AR3386 unleashed a powerful X1-class solar flare. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the extreme ultraviolet flash on Aug. 7th at ~2100 UT:

Radiation from the flare caused a deep shortwave radio blackout over the Pacific Ocean (map), and a magnificent CME has emerged from the blast site (movie). The CME will not hit Earth. It is just outside our planet's strike zone.

Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2023 - MINOR SOLAR RADIATION STORM IN PROGRESS: Energetic solar protons are hitting Earth's upper atmosphere today. They were accelerated in our direction by a recent series of X- and M-class solar flares. The main effect of this solar radiation storm (category S1) is a shortwave radio blackout inside the Arctic Circle (map). The storm is expected to last another 24 to 48 hours. Aurora alerts: SMS Text

THE GREAT SOLAR STORM OF MARCH 1940: This story is shocking. On March 24, 1940, a solar storm hit Earth so hard it made copper wires in the United States crackle with 800 volts of electricity. A New York Times headline declared that a "sunspot tornado" had arrived, playing havoc with any signal that had to travel through metal wires.

https://www.spaceweather.com/images2023/09aug23/headline_strip.jpg

"For a few hours it completely disrupted all long-distance communication," wrote astronomer Seth B. Nicholson in a recap of the event for the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Radio announcers seemed to be "talking a language no one could understand." The New York Times reported that more than a million telephone and teletype messages had been garbled: "Veteran electrical engineers unhesitatingly pronounced it the worst thing of its kind within their memory."

So why have you never heard of this storm? Even in 1940 it was fairly quickly forgotten. World War II was underway in Europe, and the USA was on the verge of joining. People had other things on their minds.

Modern researchers, however, are paying attention. A team led by Jeffrey Love of the USGS Geomagnetism Program just published a new study of the event in the research journal Space Weather. Their work confirms that it was no ordinary solar storm.

"It was unusually violent," says Love. "There were very rapid changes in Earth's magnetic field, and this induced big voltages in long metal wires."

Love and colleagues learned about the voltages from old engineering reports. In 1940, the United States was cross-crossed by copper wires hundreds to thousands of miles long. They were not for power distribution; electrical systems were still mostly regional. Instead the wires were used for communications such as telephone calls and telegrams. When the "sunspot tornado" hit Earth, electricity began to move through the system. Technicians jotted down some of the voltages they saw--and the numbers were incredible.

https://www.spaceweather.com/images2023/09aug23/shockingvoltages_strip.jpg

"Records show 400 V in Minnesota, 750 V in Missouri, and more than 800 V in Massachusetts," says Love. "These are 10 times greater than long-wire voltages recorded during the Great Quebec Blackout in March 1989."

What caused the high voltages? Love's team examined old magnetogram records from the date of the storm and found evidence that two coronal mass ejections CMEs hit Earth only 1.82 hours apart. The double blow rattled Earth's magnetic field in a complicated way most single CMEs do not.

"This could be a harbinger of things to come,
" says Love. Modern studies show that as many as 5 CMEs leave the sun every day during Solar Maximum. With Solar Cycle 25 underway and intensifying, a double hit could definitely happen again.

A similar storm today might not significantly impact communications; we live in the wireless age of cell phones. Electricity is another matter. Modern power systems depend on long wires to shuttle electricity across the country. A repeat of 1940 could interfere with their operations. Love notes that the 1940 voltages exceed NERC power-grid industry benchmarks for 100-year storms. As a result, some modern power grids might not be ready to handle the shock of another 1940 event.

Aurora Highlights from the G3 Solar Storm & A Fast Wind Watch | Solar Storm Forecast 13 August 2023

This week much of the activity is on the farside of the Sun, giving us a much needed break. After the multiple X-class flares and G3-level solar storm we sure can use it! That being said, we do have a large coronal hole that will be rotating through the Earth-strike zone over the next couple of days and it will send us some fast solar wind. Aurora photographers, especially at high latitudes could get a bit of a show, especially considering we are hitting the peak of the Perseid meteor shower now, coincident with a new moon, and viewing conditions will be spectacular over the next few days. Amateur radio operators should also enjoy spectacular propagation on Earth's dayside since the solar flux remains well into the triple digits and the radio noise has quieted considerably. GPS users should also enjoy excellent reception, even during the notoriously troublesome hours around dawn and dusk. Catch up with gorgeous aurora photos from the recent solar storm, watch how the solar flares impacted radio communications via the GEOCHRON clock, and see what else our Sun has in store this week.

SOLAR CYCLE UPDATE: This website, Spaceweather.com, began in 1997 with the first stirrings of Solar Cycle 23 (SC23). The timing was right. In the years that followed, SC23 produced the strongest solar flare of the Space Age (X45), the infamous Halloween Storms of 2003, and multiple episodes of Northern Lights as far south as Texas and California. Could it happen again? New Solar Cycle 25 is heading in the same direction:

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Sc_update_strip2

This summer, sunspot counts have hit their highest values in more than 20 years, sharply exceeding official forecasts and putting them squarely in the ballpark of Solar Cycle 23. It's just like old times.

With Solar Max not expected for another year (or more), sunspot counts should continue to increase, further widening the gap between Solar Cycle 25 and its historically weak predecessor Solar Cycle 24. If, indeed, Solar Cycle 25 does leapfrog Solar Cycle 24 and land in the vicinity of Solar Cycle 23, we can expect at least 3 to 5 years of high solar activity in the years ahead. Stay tuned.

A VERY GOOD PERSEID METEOR SHOWER: Forecasters are predicting the best Perseid meteor shower in years this weekend. On Saturday night, Aug. 12-13, Earth will pass through a stream of debris from Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, causing dozens of meteors per hour to streak out of the constellation Perseus. The nearly New Moon will make the display unusually easy to see from dark-sky sites. Book a campsite and enjoy the show: Observing tips.

THE INFERIOR CONJUNCTION OF VENUS--TODAY: It's dangerous, but beautiful. Today, Venus is passing almost directly between Earth and the sun--an event astronomers call "inferior conjunction." This is turning the planet into a whisper-thin crescent:

TODAY'S FORECAST CALLS FOR QUIET, BUT... There are eight sunspot groups on the Earthside of the sun--a large number that would normally herald strong solar activity. In this case, however, the forecast calls for quiet. All eight sunspot groups have stable magnetic fields that pose no threat for strong flares. BUT! A large sunspot is emerging, which would change everything. Keep reading....

A LARGE SUNSPOT IS EMERGING: NASA's Perseverance Mars rover saw it first. Last week, the rover's MASTCAM spotted a large sunspot crossing the farside of the sun. Now it is emerging over the sun's eastern limb where we can see it from Earth. The new sunspot seems to be connected to another sunspot across the sun's equator. Watch this:

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Emergence_strip

Recorded by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, the movie shows two horn-like plumes of plasma leaping up from the new sunspot and, simultaneously,. sunspot AR3413. A bridge of magnetism linking the two active regions could coordinate their explosions as they turn toward Earth this week, doubling their impact on our planet.

COSMIC URGENT - NASA JUST DISCOVERED A SUNSPOT SO BIG IT COULD RELEASE SOLAR STORMS that KNOCK OUT EARTH'S POWER GRIDS NEXT WEEK!!

[twitter]https://twitter.com/BubsQ17/status/1694087963506819328?s=20[/twitter]
NASA has identified a giant sunspot on the sun that will likely continue to grow and move across the surface until it faces Earth next week.

Experts have warned that the dark region, which is cooler than the surrounding area, could release energetic explosions capable of knocking out our planet's power grids.

The exact measurements of the sunspot are unknown, but NASA's Perseverance rover snapped images of the spot as it sits more than 152 million miles from the sun.

The rover observed the sunspot on August 17 through August 20 while exploring the Jezero Crater on the Red Planet.

The Chronovisor: The Mysterious Device That Sees Through Time Reveals The Hidden Truths Of History!

Our humanity has gone through tremendous challenges. It has created amazing inventions and technologies, but some of them have remained hidden for one reason or another. We know about the amazing Tesla and Free Energy, Leonardo Da Vinci and his brilliant mind, Albert Einstein and so on, but because of the dominance of the Church at the time, many things remained hidden from the masses and carefully controlled by a select few.

Today we will talk about one of these "forgotten" inventions, about what is known, what has remained hidden and everyone will be able to judge for themselves and choose what to believe.

What would you do if you had a device through which you could see the past and the future? To take a peek at all those legendary battles, campaigns and events that shaped us as a civilization? Well, the story told by the Italian priest Father Pellegrino Ernetti in the 1960s is about such a device.

It cannot be physically traveled with it, but it can be used to look forward into the future or back into the past and see every single episode of the history of human civilization. Although the idea was first presented in H.G. Wells' book "The Time Machine" in 1895, the details about it were not published by a fiction writer, but by a monk.

CME TO HIT SOLAR ORBITER: Europe's Solar Orbiter is about to get some good data. A farside halo CME is heading straight for the spacecraft. According to a NASA model, the CME will strike on Sept. 9th, giving Solar Orbiter's sensors an in situ view of the storm. The source of the blast was probably active sunspot AR3414, now transiting the farside of the sun. Solar flare alerts: SMS Text

BRIGHT COMET AT DAWN: Set your alarm for dawn. There is a bright comet in the morning sky. You probably can't see it with the naked eye, but even short exposures with digital cameras are picking up the starlike head and long tail of Comet Nishimura (C/2023 P1):

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Canarycomet_strip

"This is a 4-second exposure (ISO 1600) from the Cabreja Volcano in Vega de San Mateo on Gran Canaria Island," says photographer Frank A. Rodriguez. "I used a Canon EOS R digital camera. What a nice comet!"

Comet Nishimura is plunging toward the sun for a close encounter inside the orbit of Mercury on Sept. 17th. Increasing heat is causing it to brighten rapidly. Latest estimates of the comet's brightness place it at magnitude +4.5. In a dark sky, this would be visible to the unaided eye, but the morning sky is not dark. Cameras are required to observe the comet; a few seconds of exposure time are enough for a very nice picture.

This morning in Germany, Michael Luy photographed the comet before breakfast:

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Breakfast_strip2

"Visually it is a real challenge. I needed binoculars to see its shimmering green core," says Luy. "Hanging low in the eastern sky, Comet Nishimura is quickly outshone by the advancing dawn. This may not be a comet for the 'general public,' but it is a nice target for comet hunters and nature lovers."

QUIET WEEKEND: Last weekend, a CME hit Earth's magnetic field, sparking two days of geomagnetic storms and an outburst of rare red auroras. This weekend will be completely different. No CMEs are heading for Earth, and our planet's magnetic field should remain calm and quiet. CME alerts: SMS Text

A PERIGEE HARVEST MOON: Before the days of electric lights, farmers relied on the light of the full Harvest Moon to gather their ripening crops after sunset. That gave photographer Jordi Coy an idea realized in this photo-sequence of today's Harvest Moon rising over Morón de la Frontera in Seville, Spain:

"This is a story I have been wanting to tell since I thought of it two years ago," says Coy. "I call the sequence 'A Seed for Harvest."

By definition, the Harvest Moon is the full Moon closest to the northern autumnal equinox. Every year has one. This year's Harvest Moon is special, though. It is a "perigee" Harvest Moon, 5 percent bigger and 13 percent brighter than usual.

Perigee moons happen because the Moon's orbit is an ellipse with one side ("perigee") about 50,000 km closer than the other ("apogee"). Full Moons that occur on the perigee side of the Moon's orbit are extra big and bright. That's what's happening today. Got a picture of the perigee Harvest Moon?

This weekend will be completely different. No CMEs are heading for Earth, and our planet's magnetic field should remain calm and quiet. CME alerts: SMS Text HOWEVER, THERE COULD BE SOME SOLAR FLARES: Solar flares are going off like popcorn in the magnetic canopy of new sunspot AR3451. The strongest so far is this staccato M2.5-class explosion recorded by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory during the early hours of Oct. 1st:

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Crackle_crop_strip_opt

The sunspot didn't even exist 24 hours ago. Since then it has grown more than a dozen dark cores, two of them wider than Earth. Magnetic maps of the sunspot are not fully definitive because it is facing away from Earth. However, the sunspot appears to have a mixed-polarity 'delta-class' magnetic configuration that harbors energy for -- you guessed it -- strong flares.

THE SUN'S MAGNETIC POLES ARE DISAPPEARING: The sun is about to lose something important: Its magnetic poles.

Recent measurements by NASA's Solar Dynamic Observatory reveal a rapid weakening of magnetic fields in the polar regions of the sun. North and south magnetic poles are on the verge of disappearing. This will lead to a complete reversal of the sun's global magnetic field perhaps before the end of the year.

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Poles_strip

An artist's concept of the sun's dipolar magnetic field. Credit: NSF/AURA/NSO.

If this were happening on Earth, there were be widespread alarm. Past reversals of our planet's magnetic field have been linked to calamities ranging from sudden climate change to the extinction of Neanderthals. On the sun, it's not so bad.

"In fact, it's routine," says Todd Hoeksema, a solar physicist at Stanford University. "This happens every 11 years (more or less) when we're on the verge of Solar Maximum."

Vanishing poles and magnetic reversals have been observed around Solar Max in every single solar cycle since astronomers learned to measure magnetic fields on the sun. Hoeksema is the director of Stanford's Wilcox Solar Observatory (WSO), that is observing its fifth reversal since 1980.

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Fivereversals_strip

The last five polar field reversals observed at the Wilcox Solar Observatory (inset)

"One thing we have learned from these decades of data is that no two polar field reversals are alike," he says.
Sometimes the transition is swift, taking only a few months for the poles to vanish and reappear on opposite ends of the sun. Sometimes it takes years, leaving the sun without magnetic poles for an extended period of time.

"Even more strange," says Hoeksema, "sometimes one pole switches before the other, leaving both poles with the same polarity for a while."

Indeed, such a scenario could be playing out now. The sun's south magnetic pole has almost completely vanished, but the north magnetic pole is still hanging on, albeit barely.

How does all this effect us on Earth? One way we feel solar field reversals is via the heliospheric current sheet:

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Hcs_strip
An artist's concept of the heliospheric current sheet.

The sun is surrounded by a wavy ring of electricity that the solar wind pulls and stretches all the way out to the edge of the Solar System. This structure is a part of the sun's magnetosphere. During field reversals, the current sheet becomes extra wavy and highly tilted. As the sun spins, we dip in and out of the steepening undulations. Passages from one side to another can cause geomagnetic storms and auroras.

Most of all, the vanishing of the poles means we're on the verge of Solar Maximum. Solar Cycle 25 is shaping up to be stronger than forecasters expected, and its peak could be relatively intense.

MINOR GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: One and perhaps two CMEs could graze Earth's magnetic field on Nov. 4th. Individually, neither CME is particularly significant, but added together they could spark a minor G1-class geomagnetic storm. This is especially true if one CME sweeps up the other to form a Cannibal CME.

FULL HALO CME: Aurora watchers should get their hopes up. This morning, Nov. 3rd, coronagraphs onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) detected a full halo CME. The storm cloud is heading directly for Earth: AWESOME

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Halocme_opt

The cloud was hurled into space by the eruption of a long magnetic filament in the sun's northern hemisphere: movie.

A NASA model of the CME suggests it will arrive between 1200 UT and 1800 UT on Nov. 5th. Two minor CMEs could precede it with glancing blows on Nov. 4th. The sum of these impacts have the potential to produce G2-class or stronger geomagnetic storms.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH (G2): NOAA forcasters say there is a chance of G2-class geomagnetic storms today, Nov. 7th, when the subsiding effects of Sunday's CME might overlap with an incoming solar wind stream. Earth's magnetosphere is already humming with G1-class activity, and it won't take much to push it across the threshold to G2. Aurora alerts: SMS Text

EARTH'S RING CURRENT JUST SPRANG A LEAK: During this weekend's strong G3-class geomagnetic storm, low-latitude auroras spread as far south as Texas and Arizona. Upon further review, most of those lights were not auroras at all. Everything red in these photos is an "SAR":

"This was a new phenomenon to me," says Jeremy Perez, who took the Arizona photo. "I had never heard of SARs before, but I kept shooting anyway."

SARs were discovered in 1956 at the beginning of the Space Age. Researchers didn't know what they were and unwittingly gave them a misleading name: "Stable Auroral Red arcs" or SARs. In fact, SARs are neither stable nor auroras.

Auroras appear when charged particles rain down from space, hitting the atmosphere and causing it to glow. SARs form differently. They are a sign of heat energy leaking into the upper atmosphere from Earth's ring current system–a donut-shaped circuit carrying millions of amps around our planet.

"On Nov. 5th, the ring current was pumped up for hours by the geomagnetic storm, with energy dissipating into these SAR arcs," says Jeff Baumgardner of Boston University's Center for Space Physics. "It was a global event. Our cameras registered SAR activity from Italy to New Zealand."

Recent research has linked SARs to another phenomenon that is not an aurora: STEVE. The mauve ribbon in the sky was not originally thought to have anything to do with Earth's ring current. Yet in 2015, observers in New Zealand caught a bright red SAR transforming itself into STEVE.

Mark Savage may have seen the same thing happen on Nov 5th when an SAR apparently gave birth to STEVE over of Northumberland, UK:

"The entire process took about 10 minutes," says Savage. This roughly matches the timescale of an SAR-to-STEVE transition observed over Canada in April 2022.

"The connection between STEVE and SARs is still elusive," cautions Carlos Martinis, a leading researcher in the field at Boston University. "Sometimes SARs evolve into STEVE--but not always. This is a very active field of research, involving citizen scientists and researchers."

POLAR CAP ABSORPTION EVENT: A minor polar cap absorption event is underway on Nov. 10th as a result of energetic protons accelerated toward our planet by yesterday's halo CME (see below). This means shortwave radio transmissions inside the Arctic and Antarctic Circles may be absorbed due to extra ionization in Earth's upper atmosphere: map.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH (G2): Another CME is heading for Earth. Coronagraphs onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) saw it leaving the sun on Nov. 9th:

https://www.spaceweather.com/images2023/10nov23/halocme_dec.gif

Estimated time of arrival: Nov. 11th. NOAA and NASA models agree that the cloud will strike on Saturday around 1800 UT. Its impact could spark a G2-class geomagnetic storm--not quite as strong as the G3-class event of Nov. 5th, but still enough to produce auroras in northern-tier US states from New York to Washington.

A slow eruption beginning after 10:00 UTC today (Nov 9) near center disk appears to have launched a halo coronal mass ejection (CME) directly towards Earth. An impact past Earth will be possible within the next 48-72 hours. More detailed information to follow.

Earth Directed Eruption and CME
November 9, 2023 @ 18:30 UTC (UPDATED)

An eruption on the Sun near center disk was observed beginning after 10:00 UTC (Nov 9, 2023). The long duration event only registered as a low level C-Class flare, however coronal dimming was evident, along with a relatively faint, full halo coronal mass ejection (CME). A passage past Earth is predicted for sometime on November 11th or into the 12th. Another round of geomagnetic storming may be possible. Aurora sky watchers should be prepared this weekend. Stay tuned to SolarHam.com for the latest updates.

WEEKEND GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: A CME (movie) is expected to hit Earth this weekend--probably on Nov. 19th. The impact could spark minor G1-class geomagnetc storms on the 19th and 20th. During such storms, naked-eye auroras typically fill the Arctic Circle. Fainter photographic auroras (best seen using cameras) may cross the US-Canadian border, dipping into states from New York to Washington

LARGE FARSIDE SUNSPOTS: We can't see the farside of the sun, but we know what's there. The science of helioseismology allows researchers to make crude maps of the sun's hidden hemisphere. Their latest map reveals two large farside sunspots:

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 Farsidesunspot_strip
https://www.spaceweather.com/images2023/17nov23/farsidesunspot_strip.jpg

The black blobs are sunspots so large they effect the way the whole sun vibrates. Indeed, these vibrations are the data used by helioseismologists to pintpoint the unseen spots. Both sunspots will rotate onto the Earthside of the sun early next week.

Strong Solar Flare Directly At Earth

MULTIPLE CMEs ARE COMING: At least three CMEs are heading for Earth following a series of magnetic filament eruptions (#1, #2 & #3) earlier this week. Their collective arrival could spark G2-class geomagnetic storms with mid-latitude auroras on Nov. 30th and Dec. 1st. This forecast does not yet take into account a possible CME hurled toward us by today's almost-X class solar flare. Keep reading! Solar flare alerts: SMS Text

ALMOST-X CLASS SOLAR FLARE: Sunspot AR3500 erupted on Nov. 28th (1950 UT), producing an M9.8-class solar flare--only percentage points below category X. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the blast:

SpaceWeather updates - Page 10 M9_teal_anim_crop

a pulse of extreme UV radiation blacked out shortwave radio communications across the South Pacific Ocean and parts of the Americas: map. Mariners and ham radio operators may have noticed loss of signal at frequencies below 20 MHz.

This explosion almost certainly hurled a CME toward Earth. Confirmation awaits fresh data from SOHO coronagraphs.
