EARTH CHANGES 2011 DAILY UPDATES - Page 30 Empty Scientists fear mass extinction as oceans choke

Post  AscendingStarseed Wed Dec 29, 2010 1:44 am

    By Amy Simmons

    Updated Wed Dec 1, 2010 12:20am AEDT

Australian scientists fear the planet is on the brink of another mass extinction as ocean dead zones continue to grow in size and number.

More than 400 ocean dead zones - areas so low in oxygen that sea life cannot survive - have been reported by oceanographers around the world between 2000 and 2008.

That is compared with 300 in the 1990s and 120 in the 1980s.

Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies (CoECRS) and from the University of Queensland, says there is growing evidence that declining oxygen levels in the ocean have played a major role in at least four of the planet's five mass extinctions.

"Until recently the best hypothesis for them was a meteor strike," he said.

"So 65 million years ago they've got very good evidence of the cretaceous exctinction event.

"But with the four other mass extinction events, one of the best explanations now is that these periods were preceded by an increase of volcanic activity, and that volcanic activity caused a change in ocean circulation.

Light shines in High Arctic darkness
Last Updated: Monday, December 27, 2010

Inuit and other High Arctic residents say their winters are getting lighter as the climate warms. (Kevin Frayer/Canadian Press)

People in the High Arctic say their 24-hour darkness isn't as dark as it used to be, and a weather researcher says it's because of the warming climate.

"We still have a daylight and there's still blue, green, red down there — there's sun sign still," said Zipporah Ootooq Aronsen, who lives in Resolute Bay, Nunavut. "It's not usually like that."

People in Resolute Bay now sometimes see a distant island that in the past was only visible during daylight hours.

"It never happened like that before," Aronsen said. "Now we can see it once in a while, when it's a clear day."

Wayne Davidson, a weather researcher in Resolute Bay, said warmer thermal layers over cold dense polar air cause light to bend and travel farther.

"If there's a huge contrast between colder and warmer air, there's longer travel of light from any locations," he said.

Inuit have been noticing changes during the dark season for years but the changes are becoming more visible as the climate warms, Davidson said.

"It should be usually, around average, –31 degrees," he said. "It was, couple of days ago, –5 or something like that, so it's pretty wild."

That refraction of light at the border between cold and warm air is what's allowing people to see farther than normal, Davidson said.

"Refraction makes light travel," he said.

Jaypetee Akeeagok, who lives in Grise Fiord, Nunavut, said the weather has also been unusually warm there.

"You can actually drive Skidoo around town without gloves on," he said.

And people in Grise Fiord have also noticed there's more light in winter.

"Twenty years ago, we wouldn't even be able to see the whole village, in high noon, which is only nine kilometres, but now we get to see some daylight," Akeeagok said.

South Africa relocates residents due to sinkholes

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-12083806

South African authorities have begun the relocation of 3,000 families after huge sinkholes appeared close to their homes near Pretoria.

The depressions are said to be the result of a massive extraction of water by farms in the area, causing underground caverns to collapse.

About 50 families living in an informal settlement in Bapsfontein have been moved so far, officials said.

Authorities have said the land is no longer fit for human settlement.

    'Immediate evacuation'
"The situation is so bad that there are several sinkholes that have formed around the area," Zweli Dlamini, a spokesman for the Ekurhuleni municipality, told the BBC.

He said the area around the informal settlement had been categorised as unsafe due to the possibility of the sinkhole "swallowing that piece of land".

Underground water was increasing the danger to a degree that gave authorities no choice but to order an immediate evacuation, he added.

Some of the sinkholes are more than 80m (263ft) across, and cracks now run throughout the land, says the BBC's Africa editor Martin Plaut.

Families have agreed to move and have been promised better houses to live in.

The relocation process is expected to run until mid-January, according to the South African Press Agency (Sapa).

    Heavy snow grips northern China
It is not just in Europe and North America that snow has been causing travel chaos. Days of continuous snowfall have hit northwestern and eastern China, causing roadblocks and delays.

Wet December brings nearly double the snowpack
State's mountain snow levels are 198% of normal, water officials say, and more rain is expected.

Helped by one of the wettest Decembers in history, California's mountain snowpack is 198% of normal, the state Department of Water Resources said Tuesday.

"Hydrologically, we're off to what promises to be a very good water supply year," said Ted Thomas, a spokesman for the Department of Water Resources. "This is the best early water supply start since 2006."

"This boosts our hopes that we will have an adequate water supply for our cities and farms as we continue to shake off effects of the 2007-09 drought," Mark Cowin, director of the Department of Water Resources, said in a statement.

According to the agency, Pyramid Lake is at 98% of total capacity, and Castaic Lake is at 90%. Both reservoirs in northern Los Angeles County are at above-average levels for this time of year.

The rains also helped fill reservoirs in Northern California, which are key to the State Water Project, which in turn is critical to supplying the Southland's water needs. Lake Oroville, the water project's principal reservoir, is at 59% of capacity, which is just shy of being average for this time of year.

Reservoir levels at one of the Metropolitan Water District's most important reservoirs, Diamond Valley Lake outside Hemet, are also on the rise. The reservoir, critical to Orange, Riverside and San Diego counties, is now more than 75% full — the highest it has been since January 2008, said Bob Muir, spokesman for the water district. Diamond Valley Lake was less than half full earlier this year.

Southland water reserves had been dwindling since 2007, Muir said, the result of dry rainy seasons and restrictions on pumping water out of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to southbound aqueducts.

The reservoirs and the snowpack should get more help from the rainstorm that was expected to arrive Tuesday night in Southern California. The storm was expected to move through the area relatively quickly, but forecasters warned of low temperatures and plunging snow levels.

"It's a fast-mover," said Stuart Seto, a weather specialist with the National Weather Service. "It'll last about 24 hours, with major rains out in six hours."

Seto said about half an inch of rain on the coast and about 1 inch in the mountains was expected, with heavy rain moving in about midnight and lasting four to six hours.

The showers should end Wednesday afternoon. Winds could reach 15 mph to 25 mph during the day, increasing to 50 mph Wednesday night. Seto said the winds could prove particularly problematic because trees are more likely to blow over because of the soft ground.

This storm will be much colder than the previous systems, with temperatures in the mid-50s Thursday and Friday and lows down to 40 degrees overnight.

"This one comes from the Arctic and it brings that cold air with it," Seto said.

By Wednesday night, snow levels could fall to as low as 2,000 feet. Snow could fall on Interstate 5 over the Grapevine and possibly on the 14 Freeway at Soledad Canyon, Seto said.

Even if there isn't snow on highways and streets, motorists should prepare for icy conditions with the incoming rain freezing on some roads.

Forecasters predicted mostly cloudy skies above Pasadena on Jan. 1 for the Rose Parade. The low in Pasadena on New Year's morning could be 41 degrees, and the high is expected to be only 56, said Bonnie Bartling, a specialist for the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

Bartling said there is a 15% chance that it will rain on the Rose Parade, but it seems more likely that Saturday's expected storm will arrive many hours after the parade.

Northern Ireland Faces Mounting Water Crisis
Frustration and fears of disease mounted in Northern Ireland on Wednesday as 36,000 people were left without water, some for more than a week, after a deep freeze and a sudden thaw caused aging pipes to burst.

With reservoirs running low, water supplies were cut off in many towns and cities, and residents turned to emergency water tankers and bottled water for their cooking, cleaning and drinking needs.

"It's been a nightmare," said James Lawson, a resident in Lisburn, near Belfast, who has gone without water for 13 days. "You can't wash, you can't eat because you can't wash your dishes. I think it's a fiasco," he told the BBC.

Scotland said it was sending 160,000 liters (42,000 gallons) of bottled water to help meet demand.

Northern Ireland's Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, called the situation "a grave crisis," and said people had been let down by their water supplier.

The Northern Ireland government scheduled an emergency meeting for Thursday to discuss the crisis.

Doctors warned of potential disease outbreaks if water was not restored, but officials said it would take several days or more to bring back all service.

"This may go on for another short period but we are doing our best to keep it as short as possible to get those reservoir levels up and provide water to our customers," said Liam Mulholland, of Northern Ireland Water.

He said the shortage had been aggravated by burst pipes in vacant properties spewing water as technicians try to trace and repair the problem.

The water company's website listed some 80 towns and cities with disrupted water supplies and advised customers where to find emergency supplies.

There was also substantial flooding in Northern Ireland, with some floodwaters contaminated by sewage, raising public health concerns.

Alison McCrystal, spokeswoman for the water company, urged consumers not to wash their cars, hose down their properties or do "anything unnecessary" to waste water during the shortfall.

She said emergency crews were working around the clock to restore service and ease fears that contaminated water could lead to a disease outbreak.

McCrystal also pleaded for people with empty properties or businesses to check that their pipes were intact and their water turned off to prevent more wastage.

Some families have not had fresh running water for eight days, with officials predicting it will take several more days to restore normal service.

"People with young families have not been able to flush toilets and wash themselves, never mind get access to drinking water," said Dr. Peter Maguire, a general practitioner. "It's just not good enough. What's happening is really not acceptable."

Many cities have made leisure and recreation centers available to the public so they can use bathroom facilities and have a place to do washing.

All those areas where it is snowing across the globe who do not have their water pipes buried deep enough or do not know how to keep their water pipes from freezing will likely have the same problems that Ireland is currently dealing with (broken pipes). If there is snow outside they can always melt snow for water and use a filtration system (like a gravity fed Big Berkey) for pure drinking water. The real issue underneath all of this is sanitation and the possible outbreak of disease.

Rare hurricane-strength 94 mph winds batter L.A. area; more snow and ice on way
    December 30, 2010 | 7:06 am
A rare blast of hurricane-strength winds was topped by a 94 mph gust measured by the National Weather Service at 3:57 a.m. Thursday at Whitaker Peak
    .

Forecasters said the winds in valley and mountain areas will continue at least until noon Thursday. A wind warning for the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys is in place until then.

The weather service said in a statement that a northerly flow is producing the wind and icy conditions and "will continue to bring dangerous winter weather conditions" on Thursday, producing 1 to 2 inches of snow in some mountain passes and generating "upslope snow showers across the northern mountain slopes."

The weather service said icy conditions can be expected along Interstate 5 and other mountain passes.

The snow level plunged to 2,000 feet, closing Interstate 15. Temperatures fell to 49 degrees in downtown L.A. and 19 degrees at Mt. Wilson.

The California Highway Patrol’s traffic website reported toppled trees throughout Los Angeles County, including along the 710 Freeway, and the interchanges of the 110 and 101, and 5 and 101 freeways.

Downed power lines have left thousands without power.

Here are some strong wind gusts clocked overnight.

    Whitaker Peak: 81 mph

    Pyramid Lake: 61 mph

    Castiac Lake: 75 mph

    Warm Springs: 75 mph

    San Fernando: 71 mph

NOW IT'S SNOWING -- IN PHOENIX?
With plunging temperatures and lingering cloud cover, Valley residents caught a rare glimpse of what many thought were brief periods of snow flurries Thursday.

Sightings were reported in Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Fountain Hills, Cave Creek, Carefree, Peoria, Glendale and Anthem, Apache Junction, Mesa and parts of Phoenix.

However, National Weather Service officials said that what people actually saw was a phenomenon called graupel -- soft hail that freezes higher in the atmosphere and as it comes down, warms and melts a little, much like a snowflake.

    THE GREAT FLOOD OF OZ

Australia floods larger than France strand 200,000 - Dec 31, 7:12 AM (ET)
BRISBANE, Australia (AP) - Military aircraft dropped supplies to towns cut off by floods in northeastern Australia as the prime minister promised new assistance Friday to the 200,000 people affected by waters covering an area larger than France and Germany combined. (Bigger then the state of Texas) Residents were stocking up on food or evacuating their homes as rising rivers inundated or isolated 22 towns in the state of Queensland.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard toured an evacuation center in the flood-stricken town of Bundaberg on Friday and announced that families whose homes had been flooded or damaged would be eligible for disaster relief payments of $1,000 per adult and $400 per child.

"My concern is for the people in these very difficult times," Gillard said. A day earlier, she pledged $1 million Australian dollars (about $1 million) in federal aid to match a relief fund already set up by the state government.

Bundaberg resident Sandy Kiddle told Gillard she lost cherished items after floodwaters surged through her house. She said may not be able to return home for a week.

"It was just a sea of water, and I thought the beach would never come to our house," she told Gillard, who gave her a hug.

Officials say half of Queensland's 715,305 square miles (1,852,642 square kilometers) is affected by the relentless flooding, which began last week after days of pounding rain caused swollen rivers to overflow. The flood zone covers an area larger than France and Germany combined and bigger than the state of Texas.

While the rain has stopped, the rivers are still surging to new heights and overflowing into low-lying towns as the water makes its way toward the sea.

The muddy water inundating thousands of homes and businesses has led to a shortage of drinking water and raised fears of mosquito-borne disease.

"This is without a doubt a tragedy on an unprecedented scale," Queensland Premier Anna Bligh told Australian Broadcasting Corp.

Bligh warned that drenched communities could be stuck underwater for more than a week, and cleanup efforts were expected to cost billions of dollars.

December was coldest in 120 years
The past month was Britain's coldest December for 120 years, meteorologists have said. 31 Dec 2010
It was also the chilliest individual calendar month since February 1986, according to weather historian Philip Eden, with temperatures dropping as low as -21.1C in the Scottish Highlands.
A series of heavy snowfalls across the UK caused massive disruption to road, rail and air travel as the nation shivered in freezing conditions.

The benchmark Central England Temperature plunged to an average of -0.6C over the month, the lowest figure for December since 1890, according to MeteoGroup UK, the weather forecasting division of the Press Association.
There were 10 nights in December 2010 when the temperature fell below -18C somewhere in the UK.
Altnaharra in Sutherland, Scotland, experienced the coldest conditions, with the mercury plummeting to -21.1C early on December 1. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/topics/weather/8233992/December-was-coldest-in-120-years.html

Why is it so cold? Did the Oil Spill Make It Worse?
An Italian PhD professor of theoretical physics associated with the Frascati National Laboratories and the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (Gianluigi Zangari) argues that an analysis of satellite data shows that the loop current was stopped for the first time a month or two after the BP oil spill started, and concludes:

Since comparative analysis with past satellite data until may 2010 didn’t show relevant anomalies, it might be therefore plausible to correlate the breaking of the Loop Current with the biochemical and physical action of the BP Oil Spill on the Gulf Stream.

It is reasonable to foresee the threat that the breaking of a crucial warm stream as the Loop Current may generate a chain reaction of unpredictable critical phenomena and instabilities due to strong non linearities which may have serious consequences on the dynamics of the Gulf Stream thermoregulation activity of the Global Climate.

WINTER MAY BE COLDEST IN 1000 YEARS

BRITAIN’S winter is the coldest since 1683 and close to being the chilliest in nearly 1,000 years. Latest figures reveal that the average temperature since December 1 has been a perishing -1C. That makes it the second coldest since records began in 1659.

The chilliest on record was 1683/84, when the average was -1.17C and the River Thames froze over for two months. But with January and February to come, experts believe we could suffer the most freezing cold winter in the last 1,000 years. The Met Office’s Charlie Powell said: “It’s rare to have cold this prolonged, with temperatures falling incredibly low.

“Temperatures will be down again by Sunday, with nights below freezing and daytimes below average at 3C to 5C. Our outlook forecast to January 26 shows temperatures 2C or 3C below average, frost and ice likely and the highest chance of snow or sleet over the northern half of the UK.”

Although official weather records only go back to 1659, weather experts said the centuries from 1100 to 1500, dubbed the “Medieval warm period”, would not have produced winters as cold as today.

So 2011 could end up being the coldest winter of the last millennium.

Brian Gaze, of The Weather Outlook, said: “It’s very unusual to have a sub-zero month.

    Magnitude-7.0 Earthquake Strikes Northern Argentina

    http://www.aolnews.com/2011/01/01/magnitude-7-0-earthquake-strikes-northern-argentina/BUENOS AIRES, Argentina --
A magnitude-7.0 earthquake struck a rural area of northern Argentina Saturday morning, but its epicenter was so deep that it gave only a light shake to towns nearby.

The U.S. Geological Survey said Saturday that the quake, initially registered at 6.9, hit at 6:56 a.m. about 150 kilometers (115 miles) northeast of Santiago del Estero at a depth of 563 kilometers (350 miles).

It was not immediately clear if there were any injuries or damage, but the earthquake was hardly felt in Santiago del Estero, the provincial capital, where Emilio Abdala, a receptionist at the 14-story Hotel Casino Carlos V, told The Associated Press that nobody felt a thing.

Now coastal Queensland braces for 30-foot flood waters

    SYDNEY | Sat Jan 1, 2011

    http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6BU09620110101?loomia_ow=t0:s0:a49:g43:r3:c0.065789:b40668834:z0

(Reuters) - Floods that have inundated 22 Australian towns and forced more than 200,000 from their homes headed toward the northeast coast on New Year's Day, forcing further evacuations and warnings of 30-ft flood waters.

Australia has endured its wettest spring on record, causing six river systems in tropical Queensland to flood, as soaring temperatures in the states of Victoria and South Australia sparked warnings of devastating bushfires.

The rain has flooded coal mines and hit farming hard, with many roads still impassable, and prompted warnings of the dangers of crocodiles and snakes in flooded homes.

The inland sea that stretches across Queensland is dotted with the roofs of flooded homes, islands of dry ground crowded with stranded livestock and small boats ferrying people and emergency supplies.

On Saturday, coastal areas were preparing for the worst. Evacuations were under way in the town of Rockhampton where the Fitzroy River, one of Australia's largest river systems, was expected to flood.

The town's airport was closed to commercial flights, while relief officials warned the floods would likely reach more than nine meters (30 ft) in height.

Although emergency government funds have been made available to those worst hit to help with immediate needs, Prime Minister Julia Gillard said on Saturday the crisis was far from over.

"Of course there are a lot more things we're going to do and going to need to do to help Queenslanders with these devastating floods," she told reporters.

Bundaberg resident Sandy Kiddle hugged Gillard as she told of seeing her house flooded.

"It was just a sea of water and I thought the beach would never come to our house," Kiddle told Gillard at an evacuation center.

As the northeast struggled to recover, a new storm was brewing off the coast of mineral-rich Western Australia.

A weather system which forecasters said could become a tropical cyclone brought gale-force winds, forcing several leading oil producers to halt operations and evacuate staff.

Earthquake of 7.2 magnitude hits off Chile coast
A 7.2-magnitude earthquake has hit off the central coast of Chile, the US Geological Survey says.

The epicentre was 95km (60 miles) northwest of Temuco with a depth of 17km, the USGS said.

It added that there was no current widespread tsunami threat, although there are reports of people fleeing the area.

An 8.8-magnitude earthquake in the same area last February caused widespread destruction and left dozens dead.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the quake, which hit at 1720 (2020 GMT).

It was centred about 600 kilometres (370 miles) southwest of the capital, Santiago.

Not sure if I agree. 2010 and 2011 are part of the flow and the record should not be broken between years, rather a continueing flow of info. I think it should be earth changes, point bar. Our own idea of years should not be linked to the ever changing earth changes that has no idea od 2010 or 2011. She does think like that and this should reflect that. A continuous flow????

But if it should be, then so it shall be.

I agree with you Tom that it's just one big flow of creation in different waves and that the gregorian calendar has got nothing to do with this .
On a technical level I understand it's a feature on this forum that threads are locked automatically when they attain over 60 pages or so .
This is what happened on the oil spill thread I believe as we discovered one day that our earlier pages where no longer part of the thread .
Anchor or mercuriel can maybe shed some light on this ?

If this is so than as we already reached over 50 pages here we may as well start a new cycle now .

Can we not call it simply "earth changes". rather than bring in dates?

I am not opposed to it just a thought.

Merc, Haven't had a chance to welcome you back as it were and glad to hear things are on the up. Love to you my brother.

Understanding the Chile January 2 Magnitude 7.1 earthquake
    January 2, 2011

    http://earthquake-report.com/2011/01/02/understanding-the-chile-january-2-magnitude-7-1-earthquake/

The January 2nd 2011 Araucania, Chile earthquake occurred as a result of shallow thrust faulting on or near the subduction interface between the Nazca and South America tectonic plates.
At the location of this event, the Nazca plate moves east-northeastwards with respect to South America at a rate of approximately 74 mm/yr.
The Nazca plate, oceanic in origin, subducts beneath the South America plate at a shallow angle along the Peru-Chile trench, and is seismically active to depths of approximately 200 km near the epicenter of today’s earthquake, through further north seismicity continues to depths exceeding 600 km.
The purple line below is the subduction zone

The January 2nd 2011 earthquake occurred at the southern end of the aftershock region of the Mw 8.8 megathrust earthquake of February 27, 2010, and can also be considered an aftershock of that event. The subduction zone between the Nazca and South America plates has a long history of large megathrust earthquakes, including the largest ever recorded event, an M9.5 shock in 1960, which ruptured a fault mostly to the south of today’s earthquake.
