    Billings Montana Sees Record Snowfall.

    http://missoulian.com/news/state-and-regional/article_e2ec2758-f59d-11df-9314-001cc4c03286.html

Billings-based meteorologist Sean Campbell tells the Billings Gazette that a foot of snow fell on the city between midnight and 6 p.m., eclipsing the previous one-day record of 2.5 inches set in 2007.

Campbell says the storm covered most of Montana except for the northwest corner.

Red Lodge received 13 inches of snow on Saturday, and 20 inches fell a mile outside of Cooke City.

Cooke City and nearby Silver Gate also suffered power outages starting on Thursday when the storm moved in, and wintery driving conditions delayed repair crews trying to restore power on Saturday.

    Good Monday morning, western Montana!

Bundle up before you head for work or school. It's going to be a cold one
    .
The National Weather Service says to be ready for snow today and an afternoon high of 19 degrees. Wind-chill values will drop that reading to as low as minus 2.
Southwest winds will be 6 mph, becoming easterly. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent, with 2-4 inches of snow expected in the Missoula Valley and more in the mountains.
Tonight, be on the watch for snow and areas of blowing snow, with a low temperature of 1 degree. Wind-chill values will drop to minus 21. Wind gusts could be as high as 37 mph.

Arctic cold fronts en route to western Montana
    Montana Weather

Two snowstorms and an arctic breakout could bring an abrupt start of winter in western Montana starting Tuesday.

National Weather Service predictions call for dangerously high winds in the Bitterroot and Anaconda-Deer Lodge valleys early Tuesday morning. The storm that follows could drop between 9 and 15 inches of snow above 5,000 feet, with up to 2 feet in the higher mountains.

"We could have some power issues if we get these strong winds, and I would be worried about high-profile vehicles," Weather Service forecaster Jeff Kitsmiller said Monday. "In the past, on Highway 93 through the Bitterroot Valley, some semis are known to have been blown over."

Tuesday's winds should hit the Bitterroot Valley between 2 and 8 a.m., moving to the Anaconda-Deer Lodge area between 5 and 11 a.m. Sustained winds are expected to blow at 40 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph

Pakistan floods wake-up call to growing disasters

Associated Press | Posted: Monday, November 22, 2010 1:17 am

The U.S. and other countries must recognize the threat represented by the massive floods that hit Pakistan earlier this year and increase preparation for a growing number of natural disasters caused by climate change, a new report said Monday.

It is estimated that as many as 200 million people will be displaced by natural disasters and climate change around the world by 2050, said the report by Washington, D.C.-based Refugees International. The world's poorest and most crisis-prone countries will be disproportionately affected.

"The massive flooding in Pakistan is a wake-up call that starkly highlights the real threats we face from climate-related disasters," said Michel Gabaudan, president of Refugees International. "Given the high costs of responding to these catastrophic events, it is in our best interest to plan now for the massive human displacement they cause and protect those most at risk."
This summer's floods in Pakistan submerged one-fifth of the country, an area the size of Louisiana, and affected more than 20 million people. The disaster caught both the Pakistani government and the humanitarian community by surprise and overwhelmed their response capabilities.

New Planet Discovered: First Spotted Outside Our Galaxy

A new planet discovered orbiting a bloated red star is the first world we know of that was born in another galaxy.

Since the mid-1990s astronomers have been adding to the list of known exoplanets, planets that exist outside our solar system. The nearly 500 exoplanets found so far all formed in our home galaxy, the Milky Way.

(See "Five New Planets Found; Hotter Than Molten Lava.")

But the newest member of the exoplanet club, dubbed HIP 13044b, was found in a stream of vagrant stars that loop around the Milky Way. Astronomers think this stellar stream is all that remains of a dwarf galaxy that once orbited the Milky Way.

About six billion years ago the Milky Way collided with and mostly absorbed this unnamed galaxy, leaving a trail of stars that now zips around our galaxy at more than 600,000 miles (965,600 kilometers) an hour.

About six billion years ago the Milky Way collided with and mostly absorbed this unnamed galaxy, leaving a trail of stars that now zips around our galaxy at more than 600,000 miles (965,600 kilometers) an hour.

The newfound planet "likely formed when the star was not yet a part of the Milky Way. It's traveled with the star all this time," said study leader Johny Setiawan, an astronomer at the Max-Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany.

The discovery is the first proof astronomers have that planet formation can indeed take place in other galaxies, added Oskar von der Lühe, an astronomer at the Kiepenheuer-Institut für Sonnen-physik in Germany who was not involved in the study.

"It also demonstrates that planet formation takes place in galaxies of a different class than the Milky Way," von der Lühe wrote in an email. "These galaxies have a quite different pattern of evolution and star-formation history."

Low level earth movement, all across the US continent. Look at West Virginia as an example. For those of you in other countries, W. Virginia is in the Appalachian Mountain chain on the East Coast.

Check it out! You can click on individual graphs for detail. Updated every thirty minutes at this link. Where you see the lines go perfectly straight, it's probably a reset. Then the charts show movement again.

Think it's chilly now? The worst November freeze for 17 YEARS is on its way!

    By Chris Brooke
    25th November 2010

    * London facing two inches of snow on Saturday
    * Met Office issues severe warnings until the weekend
    * Commuters told to prepare for chaos on roads and rail

The earliest prolonged cold spell for 17 years will take a grip on Britain from today.

Heavy snowfalls will begin a ‘big freeze’ that could last ten days, forecasters have warned.

Arctic conditions are expected to sweep across the country over the week, depositing up to ten inches of snow in the worst affected areas.

Forecasters say it is likely to be the earliest significant snow over a ‘large part of the country’ since 1993 and appears to indicate a trend of winter starting earlier than ever.

UN reports Haiti's cholera cases approaching 50,000
    2010-11-25

UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- United Nations officials on Wednesday sounded the alarm on the reported cases of cholera in Haiti as the figure approaches 50,000 and warned that the number could increase.

With the death toll on Wednesday at 1,200, officials have said the disease could have claimed as many as 2,000 people with some deaths in remote areas going unreported.

Data on the epidemic has not been received from rural communities, Nigel Fisher, UN humanitarian coordinator in Haiti, said on Tuesday via video link from the capital Port-au-Prince.

Epidemiologists in the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) estimate that the number of cases could reach 70,000, he said.

Cholera in Africa spreading at 'alarming' rate
    September 30, 2010

(AP) -- An alarming number of new cholera cases have been reported in the West African nations of Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria, an international aid agency said Thursday.

    Ads by Google

AidData - Information on Development Projects A directory of over 1M projects - www.aiddata.org

While cholera is endemic to the region, far more cases than usual have been reported, said the U.K.-based office of Doctors Without Borders.

Nigeria experienced its worst cholera outbreak in 19 years earlier this month when 13,000 were sickened and nearly 800 died in two months. That outbreak then spread to neighboring Cameroon, Chad and Niger, where more than 300 people died.

UNICEF has said that Cameroon is suffering the worst outbreak of cholera in 20 years.

Hundereds Earthquakes in the past days!

USGS is reporting a very unusual swarm of significant earthquakes, starting early this morning in the sea between Africa and the Arabian peninsula (right off the coast of Yemen), and in one of the world's most busiest shipping lanes.

The unusual particularity of these earthquakes is that the vast majority of them are happening at almost exactly a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). More than 20 earthquakes have occurred at that depth since the swarm began.

The Balkan area is also "boiling" with earthquakes. Around 250 took place in the last week alone. According to the "Euro Mediteranean Seismic Center" (EMSC), these were "surface earthquakes" and happened at a depth of 15 -20 km (9.3 - 12.4 miles).

In the Euro - Mediteranean area, not less than 568 earthquakes took place in the past 2 weeks.

According to the Romanian prof. Marmureanu from the "Romanian Seismic Institute", in Romania more than 16 earthquakes took place in the last couple of days alone, reaching a peek of 4 earthquakes in a single hour.
But, looking at the seismological map provided by EMSC, in Romania we see ONLY 3 earthquakes in the past TWO WEEKS!

Judging from the information I've shared, I can draw a personal conclusion, that the Seismic Centers/Institutes are trying to minimize the amount of earthquakes taking place in the world!

Yeah, I feel something, and so does my daughter, and her boyfriend's sister does, too. It's like you get a little off step when you go to put your foot on the floor. Not dizzy exactly, but disoriented. Ah, please New Madrid, don't fail me now. It's way too cold.

    EARTH CHANGES 2011 DAILY UPDATES - Page 22 Frank-Olsen1
WEEKEND AURORAS: A gust of solar wind hit Earth's magnetic field on Saturday, Nov. 27th, sparking a brief but intense geomagnetic storm around the Arctic Circle. Onlookers described "an explosion of Northern Lights" and a "huge outburst of auroras" that turned the heavens vivid green. One day later, the sky was still glowing, as shown in this Sunday night snapshot from Kvaløya, an island near Tromsø, Norway: Developing sunspot 1130 poses a threat for C-class solar flares.

LONG-DELAY RADIO ECHOES: During the geomagnetic storm of Nov. 27th, a brief but intense G2-class event, amateur radio operator Peter Brogl of Fürth, Germany experienced a strange phenomenon. Forty-six seconds after he transmitted his call sign at 7 MHz, he received an echo of his own transmission. "At first, I thought someone was playing tricks on me," says Brogl, "but I changed frequency, re-keyed my call sign, and got another echo." This went on for more than an hour, enough time for Brogl to make several recordings. First reported in 1927 by Norwegian civil engineer Jørgen Hals, long-delay radio echoes are rare and poorly understood. Unusual propagation conditions caused by magnetic storms is one of many possible explanations.

Japan's Bonin Islands hit by 6.9 Magnitude Earthquake
A 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s south coast on Tuesday, swaying high rise buildings in Tokyo and rattling a large area of the country.

No injuries or damage have been reported yet and Japan’s meteorological agency did not give a tsunami warning. The U.S. Geological Survey also said a tsunami is unlikely.
