Earthquake of magnitude 6.8 strikes Alaska Peninsula - EMSC
6.9 Alaska Peninsula 10/11/21
Oct 11 (Reuters) - An earthquake of magnitude 6.8 struck the Alaska Peninsula region on Monday, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre said.
The U.S. Tsunami Warning System said there was no tsunami warning after the quake.
The quake, which was upgraded from a preliminary magnitude of 6.5, was at a depth of 51 km (31.68 miles), EMSC said.
There were no immediate reports of any injuries or damages from the earthquake.

6.2-magnitude quake centered off Hawaii Island rattles state; no tsunami threat
6.21 Big Island Hawaii
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 6.2-magnitude earthquake centered about 17 miles off Hawaii Island rattled residents as far as Kauai on Sunday, but officials said there were no immediate reports of damage.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was likely the result of “bending of the oceanic plate” from the weight of the Hawaiian Island chain. The tremor did not have an impact on the ongoing Kilauea eruption.
And there was no tsunami threat from the temblor.
USGS said the quake occurred at 11:48 a.m. off Naalehu at a depth of 22 miles.
Residents across the state reported feeling shaking.
There were several reports of moderate to strong shaking in the South Kona and Kau districts of Hawaii Island while several residents on Kauai said they felt light shaking.
“We’ve only been here a year and most of them were like really quick before and just a little jolt, but this one definitely felt like more of an impact. I mean, things made a lot more noise. But windows shook Yeah, and it lasted a lot longer too,” said Kailua-Kona resident Chris Jackson.
“It was like a boom,” said Greg Porter of Kailua-Kona. “It’s like somebody picked up our island and just dropped it, it wasn’t like a rumble.”
“I was standing out here watching everyone board and it felt like a ripple underneath my feet, and I felt it twice,” said Angela Reich, a Hawaiian Airlines worker at the Kona International Airport.
Residents from Waikiki as well as in west Oahu also felt the quake.
“The house started shaking which is unusual,” said Laie resident Barney Wilson. “I felt in the past I felt earthquakes before from the Big Island but just a very mild rumble. This is more of a natural shaking of the house.”
“I felt some small shaking in Waianae,” Megg Ryan wrote on Facebook.
Ken Hon, scientist-in-charge at Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, said there was no change to the ongoing Kilauea eruption following the quake. “Webcams and other data streams show no impact on the ongoing eruption at Kilauea except for a few minor rockfalls reported within Halemaumau Crater,” he said.
At least six aftershocks were reported almost immediately following the initial earthquake. The strongest was a magnitude-4.3 temblor that occurred just five minutes after the first quake.
The USGS says because it’s a larger earthquake, they’re expecting aftershocks to continue through about three days.
The state Department of Transportation said there was no damage to any airports, harbors or highways on Hawaii Island.

Re: The Earthquake/Seismic Activity Log #2
In the winter of 1811 a series of powerful earthquakes shook the United States of America. It was a very strange series of earthquakes not just because it consisted of 3-4 major earthquakes that happened in very quick succession but also (and possibly more notably) because of where it happened. The epicentre of these earthquakes was not where you might suspect, on the west coast, but instead far to the east, in the Mississippi valley - a place not commonly associated with strong earthquakes.

This is a unusual place for this 5.0+. Caught my attention as may be war game related. A search on EMSC for 5+ magnitude there since 2004. There's only been 11.

JUST IN: 6.9 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Near Taiwan
A preliminary 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast near Taiwan Wednesday morning (local time). There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries, here is no tsunami threat to Hawaii following a 6.9 magnitude earthquake just off the western coast of Taiwan, Tuesday morning.
The quake was recorded at approximately 7:41 a.m. HST about 44 miles south of Hualien City, Taiwan at a depth of just over six miles.
The National Weather Service (NWS) Pacific Tsunami Warning Center gave the all-clear on the tsunami threat at around 7:52 a.m.
“Based on earthquake information and historic tsunami records, the earthquake is not expected to generate a tsunami,” NWS officials wrote.
No tsunami threat to the Hawaiian Islands from preliminary M6.9 Taiwan quake, but always a good time to #KnowYourHazards and #BePrepared

Strong 6.8 Earthquake Shakes Southwestern China, Killing Dozens
Government agencies said at least 65 people had died, but communications in the landslide-prone area were disrupted and the full extent of the damage was unclear.
Despite the earthquake at magnitude 6.8 that happened less than 24 hours ago and the ongoing aftershock in #Sichuan #China , the #COVID #Lockdown is still enforced regardless — people aren’t allowed to get out to escape.
In #Chongqing and #Sichuan Province, #CCPChina, the ground is so hot that it actually smokes, or can pop popcorn!
Stupid #COVID19 testing still on when the temperature burning in #Chongqing City, #CCPChina is as high as 45 degrees or 113 degrees Fahrenheit.

Huge 7.6 magnitude earthquake strikes Papua New Guinea cracking roads, wrecking shops – and shaking parts of Australia
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11201045/Huge-7-6-magnitude-earthquake-strikes-Papua-New-Guinea-no-Australian-tsunami-threat.html
Bureau of Meteorology said there is no immediate tsunami threat to Australia. 'Of all the earthquakes, I've never felt anything like this recent quake. I can literally see the earth surface moving like sea waves,' one person said.
'The shaking was very strong and vigorous. I never felt something like that before. It's almost like the earth was floating on the sea,' another wrote.
Earthquakes are common in Papua New Guinea, which sits on the Pacific Ocean's 'Ring of Fire,' a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates.
A magnitude 7.5 quake rocked PNG's remote mountainous highlands in 2018, killing more 100 people and damaging thousands of homes.

Re: The Earthquake/Seismic Activity Log #2
Taiwan 7.2 just now , 2:44 am
the other one was from 10 am yesterday,
Magnitude 7.2 earthquake
Affected countries: Japan, Philippines, Taiwan, and China
2 miles from Donghe Township, Taitung County, Taiwan · 2:44 AM
Tectonic Summary
The September 18, 2022, M 6.9 earthquake south-east of Lugu, Taiwan, occurred as the result of strike-slip faulting at shallow depth, near the plate boundary between the Philippine Sea and Eurasia plates at the southeast coast of Taiwan. Preliminary focal mechanism solutions for the earthquake indicate rupture occurred on a steep fault striking either east-southeast (right-lateral), or south-southwest (left-lateral). At the location of this earthquake, the Philippine Sea plate converges with the Eurasia plate at a velocity of approximately 73 mm/yr towards the northwest. The location, depth and mechanism of the September 18, 2022 earthquake are consistent with its occurrence along a fault in close proximity and relation to, the complex plate boundary in this region. Earthquakes do not occur at points but rupture an area along a fault. An earthquake of similar size and mechanism to the September 18, 2022 earthquake generally rupture a fault about 50 km long and 15 km wide.
Taiwan lies in a region of complex tectonics near the intersection of three major tectonic plates – the Philippine Sea plate to the east and southeast, the Eurasia plate to the north and west, and the Sunda plate to the southwest. The location of the September 18, 2022 earthquake lies south of the Ryukyu subduction zone, near the plate boundary between the Philippine Sea and Eurasia plates in this region. The plate boundary in Taiwan itself is characterized by a zone of arc-continent collision; whereby the northern end of the Luzon (Philippines) island arc is colliding with the buoyant crust of the Eurasia continental margin offshore China. Along Taiwan’s west coast, and continuing south, this collision zone transitions into the eastward-oriented Manila subduction zone.
The September 18, 2022 earthquake was preceded by an M6.5 earthquake in the same area 17 hours earlier. There have been 7 earthquakes of M5.0 and larger in the sequence (as of September 18, 2022, 20:00 UTC).
Because of its plate boundary location, Taiwan commonly experiences moderate-to-large earthquakes. The region within 250 km of this September 18, 2022 earthquake has hosted 239 other M 6+ earthquakes over the preceding century; 24 of these were M 7+. In 1951 the east coast of Taiwan was rocked by a series of about 20 earthquakes M 6 and larger the largest being a M7.8 that was about 10 km to the southwest of the recent September 18, 2022 earthquake. In September 1999, the M 7.7 Chi Chi earthquake occurred in central Taiwan and resulted in at least 2,297 fatalities, and caused damage estimated at $14 billion.
