Magnitude 7.8 quake off Russia prompts U.S. tsunami warning

Moscow – U.S. authorities put out tsunami warnings on Wednesday after an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck off Russia’s Kuril Islands, but Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued no alerts, although they said there might be slight tidal changes.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said a tsunami watch was issued for the state of Hawaii, while another agency, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, said the quake had potential to generate a destructive tsunami.

6.5 quake in Treasure Valley, Southern Idaho, south of us, that we felt here and our friend also felt in Washington. That's a pretty big quake for that area.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre says the earthquake epicenter was about 88 miles northwest of Boise and had a magnitude of 6.4. These numbers are preliminary and are likely to change.

    7.4 EQ in New Zealand

    https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us6000ae4n/executive

    Tectonic Summary

The June 18, 2020, M 7.4 Kermadec Islands region earthquake occurred as the result of shallow strike slip faulting near the Kermadec Trench where the Pacific plate begins its descent into the mantle beneath the eastern edge of the Australia plate. Focal mechanism solutions indicate that rupture occurred on a steeply dipping fault striking either to the southwest (left-lateral) or to the southeast (right-lateral). At the location of this earthquake, the Pacific plate is converging with Australia in a westward direction at a velocity of about 55 mm/yr. The focal mechanism solution and depth (about 30 km) of the event suggest that it ruptured a strike slip fault within the shallow oceanic lithosphere of the Pacific plate; the location suggests a source near the trench, within the oceanic plate near the outer rise region. While commonly plotted as points on maps, earthquakes of this size are more appropriately described as slip over a larger fault area. Strike slip events of the size of the June 18, 2020, earthquake are typically about 110x20 km (length x width).

The June 18th earthquake struck in an oceanic region with few nearby populations, approximately 650 km to north of Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. This region of the Tonga-Kermadec subduction zone experiences high levels of seismic activity, with nearly 20 events of M 6.5+ over the past half century within 250 km of the June 18 event. While M7+ earthquakes along the Kermadec Arc are generally common, this section of the subduction zone has hosted just one such event, a M 7.4 earthquake in May 2006 at an intermediate depth within the subducting Pacific slab to the west of today’s earthquake. No historic seismicity in this region is known to have resulted in damage or casualties.

Weird: Out Of Nowhere, Something Just Rocked Earth's Magnetic Field

Weird: Out Of Nowhere, Something Just Rocked Earth's Magnetic Field    There was no solar storm or geomagnetic storm to cause the disturbance. So what was it?

There was no solar storm or geomagnetic storm to cause the disturbance. So what was it?

A GLOBAL MAGNETIC ANOMALY:  On June 23rd, Earth’s quiet magnetic field was unexpectedly disturbed by a wave of magnetism that rippled around much of the globe. There was no solar storm or geomagnetic storm to cause the disturbance. So what was it?

Lately, Earth’s magnetic field has been quiet. Very quiet. The sun is in the pits of what may turn out to be the deepest Solar Minimum in a century. Geomagnetic storms just aren’t happening.

“That’s why I was so surprised on June 23rd when my instruments picked up a magnetic anomaly,” reports Stuart Green, who operates a research-grade magnetometer in his backyard in Preston UK.

“For more than 30 minutes, the local magnetic field oscillated like a sine wave.”

      The Earthquake/Seismic Activity Log #2 - Page 7 20200623_pc5-_wave

This chart recording shows a magnetic wave rippling through Preston UK on June 23, 2020. Credit: Stuart Green.

Green quickly checked solar wind data from NOAA’s DSCOVR satellite.

“There was nothing - no uptick in the solar wind speed or other factors that might explain the disturbance,” he says.

He wasn’t the only one who noticed. In the Lofoten islands of Norway, Rob Stammes detected a similar anomaly on his magnetometer. “It was remarkable,” he says.

“Our magnetic field swung back and forth by about 1/3rd of a degree. I also detected ground currents with the same 10 minute period.”

What happened? Space physicists call this phenomenon a “pulsation continuous” or “Pc” for short. Imagine blowing across a piece of paper, making it flutter with your breath. Solar wind can have a similar effect on magnetic fields. Pc waves are essentially flutters propagating down the flanks of Earth’s magnetosphere excited by the breath of the sun. During more active phases of the solar cycle, these flutters are easily lost in the noise of rambunctious geomagnetic activity. But during the extreme quiet of Solar Minimum, such waves can make themselves “heard” like a pin dropping in an silent room.

      The Earthquake/Seismic Activity Log #2 - Page 7 Anomaly3

Magnetic observatories around the world detected the wave on June 23, 2020. Credit: INTERMAGNET

Earth’s magnetic field was so quiet on June 23rd, the ripple was heard all around the world. INTERMAGNET‘s global network of magnetic observatories picked up wave activity at the same time from Hawaii to China to the Arctic Circle. There’s even a hint of it in Antarctica.

Pc waves are classified into 5 types depending on their period. The 10-minute wave on June 23rd falls into category Pc5. Slow Pc5 waves have been linked to a loss of particles from the van Allen radiation belts. Energetic electrons surf these waves down into Earth’s atmosphere, where they dissipate harmlessly.

With Solar Minimum in full swing, there’s never been a better time to study these waves. Keep quiet … and stay tuned for more.

    Alaska 7.4 (7.Cool 13km deep!!!
10 minutes ago a 7.4 magnitude earthquake has hit Gulf of Alaska (Perryville, Alaska (84 km SSE))

    https://m.emsc.eu/earthquake/earthquake.php?evid=878808

    https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/at00qdux98/executive

    M 7.8 - 105 km SSE of Perryville, Alaska

    Tectonic Summary
The July 22, 2020, M 7.8 earthquake southeast of Perryville, Alaska (south of the Alaska Peninsula), occurred as the result of thrust faulting on or near the subduction zone interface between the Pacific and North America plates. The preliminary focal mechanism solution indicates rupture occurred on a fault dipping either shallowly to the northwest, or steeply to the southeast. The location, mechanism and depth – and the large size of the event – are all consistent with slip occurring on the subduction zone interface between the two plates. At the location of this event, the Pacific plate converges with North America to the northwest at a rate of about 64 mm/yr, subducting at the Alaska-Aleutians trench 125 km to the southeast of the earthquake.

While commonly plotted as points on maps, earthquakes of this size are more appropriately described as slip over a larger fault area. Thrust faulting events of the size of the July 22, 2020 earthquake are typically about 120x50 km (length x width).

Large earthquakes are common in the Alaska-Aleutian subduction zone. Since 1900, 6 other earthquakes M7 and larger have occurred within 250 km of the July 22, 2020 event. The largest of these was a M8.2 earthquake on November 10, 1938, which occurred in an almost identical location as this July 22, 2020 earthquake. The Alaska-Aleutian Trench also hosted the second largest earthquake recorded by modern seismic instrumentation, the M9.2 March 27 1964 earthquake, which ruptured to within about 250 km of this event, at the eastern end of the 1938 rupture area. The 1938 event produced a small tsunami that was recorded both locally and in Hilo, Hawaii. The remote location of the earthquake resulted in little impact to people and infrastructure.

He's always like that Jenetta. He's a savant. Remember that movie with the savant kid playing the banjo? I just post when this type of info pops up and hope those who are interested do their research and take precautions.

Frankie has accurately predicted weather before. He calculated the NZ quake in 2016 in November. You can go back on his videos and watch it. He also gave a time frame before the quake occurred. Frankie has been frequently spot on. We have a lot of family and friends in California. California, Washington and Oregon keep popping up when it comes to disasters. Particulary riots from insurgents and fires from multiple sources (arson, lightening, DEW / direct energy weapons that were video taped, etc.). It wouldn't surprise me if DEW were used to trigger some quakes given how desperate those Democrat states are for federal disaster funding. They're broke.

A magnitude-4.5 earthquake shook Southern California shortly before midnight Friday, with aftershocks measuring 2.1 and 1.6 on the Richter scale following soon after.

The U.S. Geological Survey downgraded the quake from a preliminary 4.6.

The earthquake, centered just southwest of El Monte in eastern Los Angeles County, was felt as far south as San Diego, according to early reports.

There were no "significant" reports of damage and no injuries reported, the Los Angeles Police Department and L.A. Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas tweeted following an immediate assessment early Saturday.

Following the late-night quake, Twitter lit up.

“Woke up from the #earthquake I’m like shaking I dunno what’s up with me,” singer Bebe Rexha tweeted. “I was expecting it to be a bad one. Hope you are all safe. Love you.”

"No do not use this earthquake as an opportunity to text you’re ex - he’s fine," comedian Whitney Cummings hilariously tweeted after the shaking subsided.

"I gotta say I felt that one," another person tweeted.

Seismologist Lucy Jones said the location was close to where a magnitude-5.9 quake struck in 1987, killing several people and causing more than $200 million in damage, the Times reported.

The 1987 quake was determined to have been caused by the Puente Hills thrust fault that goes from the San Gabriel Valley to downtown Los Angeles, meaning a large quake could be even more hazardous than an even bigger one along the infamous San Andreas Fault, which skirts the city, according to the Times.

Jones said there was a 5 percent chance that Friday's 4.6 quake could be a foreshock to a larger quake, KABC-TV of Los Angeles reported. She added on later on Twitter that the chance would go down to less than 1% by Saturday evening.

Two 3.4 magnitude earthquakes struck hours apart in the same area in Northern California on Sunday, according to officials.

The U.S. Geological Survey said that the first quake struck at 3:54 p.m. local time at a depth of 3.3 miles, less than six miles northeast of Milpitas along the Calaveras Reservoir.

The second quake was reported around 10:20 p.m. local time at a depth of 2.7 miles in the same area.

There were no reports of damage or injuries from either of the earthquakes.

Shake reports from the USGS show that San Francisco Bay Area residents felt the quakes in Milpitas, Fremont and in parts of San Jose.

Just over a month ago, two similar-sized shallow temblors also struck the reservoir, the East Bay Times reported.

An earthquake swarm of four small temblors rattled areas around a reservoir in Northern California on Tuesday, the second time in three days that multiples quakes struck the area. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quakes all took place along the northern edge of the Calaveras Reservoir in Alameda County, located about 6 miles northeast of Milpitas.

The USGS said a 2.7 magnitude quake struck at 8:16 a.m. local time, followed by a 3.0 temblor about 10 minutes later and a 1.3. magnitude quake in the same area. Two minutes after 9 a.m., a third 3.3-magnitude quake hit the northern reservoir area

At least three small tremors rattled California on Tuesday for the second time in three days, leaving residents fearful that a much larger earthquake is inevitable.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that a 2.7 magnitude earthquake with a depth of 4.5km hit Milpitas around 8.16am Tuesday morning.

Ten minutes later, a 2.9 magnitude tremor with a depth of 4km hit the same area.

The third quake struck around 9.02am with a magnitude of 3.3 and a depth of 4.3km.

Experts said the quakes rattled the shoreline of the Calaveras Reservoir (file image)

Dozens of people in Fremont, Milpitas and San Jose felt the quakes, which occurred on the Calaveras fault system.

Elizabeth Cochran, a seismologist with USGS, explained to CBS that the back-to-back tremors are what experts call an 'earthquake swarm'.

'The Calaveras fault, in particular, has fairly frequent what we call "earthquake swarms." These are sets of events that are relatively low magnitude, where you have lots of events happening over a period of days to weeks.'

'If you have really weak material almost like talcum powder, talc, then you can get the fault moving, creeping along slowly instead of getting stuck and having a larger event,' Cochran added.

The back-to-back tremors have left several people wondering if the small quakes are making way for a catastrophic earthquake.

'You can never get enough small ones to replace the big one…since that ratio is constant,' seismologist Dr Lucy Jones told CBS.

'You need a big one to keep the ratio constant, and it’s the most consistent thing we record about earthquakes all over the world is this ratio of large to small. Places that have small earthquakes have lots of big ones.'

She also noted that the series of quakes is normal for Southern California.

Shortly after Tuesday's quakes, people took to social media to react to the swarm of tremors.

'For a region still dealing with: --COVID --Fires --Smokey skies for weeks It's no surprise we'd be wary of earthquakes,' one user tweeted.

Another wrote: 'I’m not one to freak out over small earthquakes, but this is the 3rd or 4th small quake we’ve had in the South Bay since Sunday and ya girl is low-key scared.'

Just days before Tuesday's earthquakes, two small tremors struck Milpitas.  According to the USGS, a 3.4-magnitude quake with a depth of 5.3km hit around 3.54pm on Sunday. Hours later at 10.16pm, another 3.4-magnitude quake hit the area.

And on September 19, a magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck Southern California.

The earthquake hit around 11.40pm, about 2 miles outside of South El Monte, near Los Angeles, the agency reported. Preliminary reports indicate it was about 11 miles deep.

Not to mention there were about 20 earthquakes reported in August alone.

Last month, Google announced that Android phones will be used to sense earthquakes around the world and may one day be able to provide global warnings.

Google, which helped develop Android, worked with California and the USGS to build the quake alerts into all phones that run the commonplace mobile operating system.

Android users who have enabled location services and are near a quake of magnitude 4.5 or greater will receive a full-screen earthquake warning telling them to drop to the floor and seek cover.

The screen also will provide estimates of the quake’s magnitude and distance from the user.

The alert is based on the projected shaking at a particular location and a certain level of intensity. Depending on their distance from a quake, people could get several seconds or perhaps a minute of warning.

The warnings are powered by California’s ShakeAlert system, which uses signals from more than 700 seismometers installed around the state that can sense seismic waves.

IPhone users won’t receive the alerts through Apple’s operating system, but they can download the MyShake app.

Meanwhile, California is also dealing with wildfires that have devoured parts of the state amid unseasonably hot and dry weather. An air tanker drops retardant while battling the Glass Fire in St Helena, California, on Sunday

Embers fly from a tree as the Glass Fire burns in St Helena, California, on Sunday

High winds that spread new fires this week in the Napa and Sonoma wine country and in a far northern area of the state were reduced to breezes, but vegetation remained ripe for burning in high temperatures amid very low humidity.

The National Weather Service said the weather conditions would last for several days due to high pressure centered over the state.

Heat advisories were in effect or pending along about three-quarters of the California coast and many areas had poor air quality due to smoke.

Numerous studies in recent years have linked bigger wildfires in America to global warming from the burning of coal, oil and gas, especially because climate change has made California much drier. A drier California means plants are more flammable.

About 70,000 people were under evacuation orders in the wine region north of San Francisco where the Glass Fire has incinerated dozens of homes along with winery installations and other buildings.

Dutch discovered these strange "hot spots" popping up all over the NMSZ three days ago. This is is 3rd video on this strange phenomenon. He says that he has NO idea what this all means, as he's NEVER seen anything like it.

Little things to watch for that will pretty much indicate a coming quake.

    1. Watch the animals. Sea gulls will fly inland and fly in circles. Birds will become way more vocal. Ants will come out of the ground and move into your house. LOL - like they do before very rainy weather. Dogs will run away - check the lost and found ads in your area. Cats (for some reason) sometimes come down with urinary infections.

    2. People become way more argumentative - especially on the internet. Road rage increases.

    3. Because the electro-magnetics change, there may be airplane crashes or train accidents... it seems to affect metal structures. Also, you might see light flashes - earthquake lights.

    4. Some people become very hyper.

    5. NEVER stand in a door frame. Always look for triangles and corners (base of a couch or bed), if you can't get to safety. Don't run outside until the shaking stops.

    6. Stay away from windows - they explode.

    7. As soon as possible, turn off the gas to your home (if you have gas service)

    8. The electric will go off....and so will the water.

    9. Make an emergency plan for your entire family regarding how to contact each other... where to meet up, etc

    10. Before an EQ, your refrigerator magnets will slide down or fall off.

    11. Hang a pendulum in your home, somewhere where there aren't air currents that could move it. Hang it on 4-5 feet of thread, or fishing line. It will start swinging before YOU feel ground movement.

Dutchsinse: 10/16/2020 -- Burst of HOT SPOTS along plate in S. CALIFORNIA
    - NEW DISCOVERY on hot spots in USA!

Huge new discovery on some of the hot spots!!! Many of the locations now showing up as hot spots are high tension power lines overloading and arcing into the 500K to 1000K temp range!!! Could be EMP (electromagnetic pulse) related.

This is a huge development! Whole sections of the power grid showing arcing (or heat related to arcing) all at once!!!!!

Not on the new madrid hot spots.. we're talking now about equally spaced hot spots across vast portions of the whole country, all which go back directly to high tension power lines. This is on top of the bursts of heat from the New Madrid, and Southern California!
