Post  Truthseeker Sun Dec 19, 2010 8:06 am

    Hello folks,

I have not posted in the mists for ages, though I visit the site most days. I like much of what I hear here, but I also get very tired of seeing misinformation repeated time and time again, particularly in relation to astronomy. I may get around to starting a new thread on this sometime. However, that is not why I am commenting now.

It is certainly not particularly common place for an eclipse to occur within 24 hours (or 1 degree) of the annual December Solstice Point alignment with the Sun. However, it is by no means anywhere as rare as was implied in the post above. Both lunar and solar eclipses have occurred on fairly frequent occasions within 24 hours of the December Solstice since the year 1400 (I have not looked back further than this yet). In fact their was no eclipse at all on the December Solstice 456 years ago (1554). Below is a list of the solar and lunar eclipses that I found on my Solar Fire Astrology programme, which fall within 1 degree (60') of the Sun's exact alignment with the December Solstice Point: -

    12th December 1414 (Solar)

    13th December 1479 (Solar)
    13th December 1498 (Solar)

    13th December 1517 (Solar)

    21st December 1619 (Lunar)
    21st December 1638 (Lunar)
    20th December 1657 (Lunar)
    20th December 1676 (Lunar)

    23rd December 1703 (Lunar)
    22nd December 1722 (Lunar)
    22nd December 1741 (Lunar)

    20th December 1786 (Solar)

    21st December 1862 (Solar)
    22nd December 1870 (Solar)
    22nd December 1889 (Solar)

    21st December 1991 (Lunar)
    21st December 2010 (Lunar)
    20th December 2029 (Lunar)
    20th December 2048 (Lunar)

None of these eclipses are exactly coincident with the moment when the Sun is centred on the the December Solstice Point. The closest was on 13th December 1479, which was only 20' (minutes) of arc (a third of a degree) from exactitude. Next closest were 20th December 1657 and 22nd December 1870, which are both 30' of arc (half a degree) from exactitude. The current December Solstice on 21st December 2010 is actually 40' of arc (2 thirds of a degree) from exactitude.

The last time that an eclipse coincided with the December Solstice was on 21st December 1991, just 19 years ago. This was 58' of arc (almost a full degree) from exactictude. The next occurs on 20th December 2029, just 19 years in the future. That, like our up and coming lunar eclipse, will be 40' of arc from exactitude. In addition to the above list, their are other eclipses that fall just outside the degree orb that I have used here.

Note the 19 year gap between quite a few of the eclipses listed avbove. This is a reflection of the Metonic Cycle, which is related to eclipse cycles.

Note also that the the 15th Century dates for the Solstice on 12th and 13th December, reflect the use of the old Juian Calendar before Calendar reform in 1582, when the new Gregorian Calendar was first introduced (different years in different nations). Ten calendar days were then removed from the calendar to bring the calendar back into alignment with the solstices, equinoxes and seasons. Thus in 1582 the 4th October was followed by the 15th October. It was also then that the leap year was introduced every four years (minus century years, but including millenium years) to keep the calendar and seasons in alignment with one another.

Wishing you all a very merry Solstice and a happy Christmas and New Year.

49 states with snow, 1180 new snowfall records set in the USA this past week – is February Headed For Record Snowfall?
Posted on February 13, 2010 by Anthony Watts - I wonder what it is now?

AP’s Seth Borenstein is running a story titled “49 states dusted with snow; Hawaii’s the holdout“ (Just for the record currently there is snow up top of Mauna Kea outside my back door). As shown in the map below, every state in the Continental US has snow someplace. As pointed out in the article, this is a rare occurrence:

The idea of 50 states with snow is so strange that the federal office that collects weather statistics doesn’t keep track of that number and can’t say whether it has ever happened. The office can’t even say whether 49 out of 50 has ever taken place before.

Post  Carol Sun Dec 19, 2010 5:18 pm

2010's world gone wild: Quakes, floods, blizzards. This was the year the Earth struck back.

Earthquakes, heat waves, floods, volcanoes, super typhoons, blizzards, landslides and droughts killed at least a quarter million people in 2010 - the deadliest year in more than a generation. More people were killed worldwide by natural disasters this year than have been killed in terrorism attacks in the past 40 years combined. "It just seemed like it was back-to-back and it came in waves," said Craig Fugate, who heads the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency. It handled a record number of disasters in 2010.

"The term '100-year event' really lost its meaning this year." And we have ourselves to blame most of the time, scientists and disaster experts say. Even though many catastrophes have the ring of random chance, the hand of man made this a particularly deadly, costly, extreme and weird year for everything from wild weather to earthquakes.

Poor construction and development practices conspire to make earthquakes more deadly than they need be. More people live in poverty in vulnerable buildings in crowded cities. That means that when the ground shakes, the river breaches, or the tropical cyclone hits, more people die.

Disasters from the Earth, such as earthquakes and volcanoes "are pretty much constant," said Andreas Schraft, vice president of catastrophic perils for the Geneva-based insurance giant Swiss Re. "All the change that's made is man-made."

The January earthquake that killed well more than 220,000 people in Haiti is a perfect example. Port-au-Prince has nearly three times as many people - many of them living in poverty - and more poorly built shanties than it did 25 years ago. So had the same quake hit in 1985 instead of 2010, total deaths would have probably been in the 80,000 range, said Richard Olson, director of disaster risk reduction at Florida International University.

In February, an earthquake that was more than 500 times stronger than the one that struck Haiti hit an area of Chile that was less populated, better constructed, and not as poor. Chile's bigger quake caused fewer than 1,000 deaths.

Climate scientists say Earth's climate also is changing thanks to man-made global warming, bringing extreme weather, such as heat waves and flooding.

In the summer, one weather system caused oppressive heat in Russia, while farther south it caused flooding in Pakistan that inundated 62,000 square miles, about the size of Wisconsin. That single heat-and-storm system killed almost 17,000 people, more people than all the worldwide airplane crashes in the past 15 years combined.

"It's a form of suicide, isn't it? We build houses that kill ourselves (in earthquakes). We build houses in flood zones that drown ourselves," said Roger Bilham, a professor of geological sciences at the University of Colorado. "It's our fault for not anticipating these things. You know, this is the Earth doing its thing."

No one had to tell a mask-wearing Vera Savinova how bad it could get. She is a 52-year-old administrator in a dental clinic who in August took refuge from Moscow's record heat, smog and wildfires.

"I think it is the end of the world," she said. "Our planet warns us against what would happen if we don't care about nature." The excessive amount of extreme weather that dominated 2010 is a classic sign of man-made global warming that climate scientists have long warned about. They calculate that the killer Russian heat wave - setting a national record of 111 degrees - would happen once every 100,000 years without global warming. Preliminary data show that 18 countries broke their records for the hottest day ever.

It’s been a very busy week for snow and also for lowest max temperature, thanks to our El Nino induced weather patterns, while the Pacific Northwest is seeing warmer conditions, the southeast and eastern US gets lots of snow thanks to the pattern.

The record February snow extent occurred in 1978 with an anomaly of more than 5 million square miles. That may be tough to beat, but from the map above it may have already happened. February will definitely be ranked in the top two.

    California Mountains Face Crushing Snowfall
    EARTH CHANGES 2011 DAILY UPDATES - Page 27 300x200_12191127_121910wsnow
A stormy weather pattern has settled in over the West, and California will endure the harshest conditions well into this week. While rain drenches much of the state, heavy snow will continue to pile up in the mountains.

Snowfall totals in parts of the Sierra Nevada reached 2-5 feet at many locations through Sunday afternoon. Another 1 to 3 feet of snow can be expected in these areas through Monday night. This means that storm totals will reach as much as 6 to 8 feet of snow, with locally higher amounts in some of the peaks above 6,000 feet. On top of Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort, at an elevation of around 11,000 feet, 9 feet of snow were measured Sunday morning! At the base of Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort, at an elevation of around 8,000 feet, 6.5 feet of snow were measured. The all-time yearly snowfall record at the base is 139 inches, and the snowfall through Sunday morning brought the snowfall to 107 inches for this year so far.

Travel will become impossible in these areas. Officials may be forced to close the mountain passes, including I-80's Donner Pass as the snow continues to pile up. On top of the heavy snowfall, gusty winds will lead to blowing and drifting snow. The wind-whipped snow could create white-out conditions for a time.

    continued at link: http://www.accuweather.com/blogs/news/story/43221/california-mountains-face-crus.asp

Based on Jim Berkland's info on the effects of the full moon, eclipse, tides and water logged terra- there may be some major quakes in some of these central/southern California areas within the next few days.
    EARTH CHANGES 2011 DAILY UPDATES - Page 27 West-setup-121910-439x330

The weekend kicked off a very stormy period for the West Coast that will extend into Wednesday. Up to 9 feet of snow has fallen in the Sierra, over 10 inches of rain in some locations, and winds well over 100 mph in the high country.

    20 December 2010
Snow disrupts travel across northern Europe

Hundreds of passengers slept in airports in France and Germany as they waited for their cancelled flights to be rescheduled

Thousands of flights and train services have been cancelled across Europe because of snow and ice, leaving many travellers stranded.

Few flights were leaving London Heathrow, Europe's busiest airport, and one third of flights were cancelled in major hubs like Paris and Frankfurt.

Roads in a number of countries have been described as treacherous.

The UK, France and Germany were among the worst-hit areas, with forecasters warning of freezing weather all week.

Restrictions on night flying at Heathrow were relaxed to help clear a huge backlog of flights, but leading carrier British Airways warned passengers they might have to abandon their Christmas holiday plans.

More than 1,000 flights were cancelled at German airports.

Earlier reports suggested all departures from Brussels airport were to be cancelled due to problems transporting de-icing liquid to the airport. But late on Monday officials said the airport would remain open as a new supplier had been found in Germany.

    Huge backlog

There were severe delays on the Eurostar rail service between the UK and France and Belgium, and Thalys trains between France and Belgium were also affected as speed restrictions hit rail travel in England and northern France.

Lines of delayed passengers snaked for several hundred metres outside London's St Pancras station, and Eurostar - which has been turning away even those with bookings - urged travellers to cancel or postpone their trips if possible.

Further snowfalls in the Paris region caused serious problems for drivers, and heavy goods vehicles were barred from major routes.

Paris bus operator RATP cancelled a number of its services.

    EARTH CHANGES 2011 DAILY UPDATES - Page 27 _50499935_european_airports_464map

Main European airports and travel disruption

    • UK: British Airways cancels all short-haul departures. Heathrow, Gatwick, Cardiff, Edinburgh and other airports suffering disruption or knock-on effects

    • France: Authorities ask airlines to cut 30% of flights from Paris's two main airports Charles de Gaulle and Orly to ease congestion

    • Germany: Some 300 of 1,340 flights cancelled at Frankfurt because of problems elsewhere in Europe, airport operator Fraport says

    • Netherlands: The schedule at Schiphol Airport near Amsterdam is suffering cancellations and delays

German rail services were also affected. Heavy snow in Berlin caused problems for commuter trains and on the roads. Dangerous conditions were also reported on roads near Cologne.

Dutch authorities imposed a 50km/h (30mph) speed limit on a number of motorways, while icy, snowy roads also caused traffic problems across Sweden.

''I'm not looking very hopeful'' said one traveller queuing for Eurostar
In Malmo, more than 100 commuter trains were cancelled because of the severe conditions.

As a sign of how bad conditions were, even in Moscow, where 9,000 snow ploughs were in action, some roads were at a virtual standstill.

In Italy, the airports at Florence and Pisa reopened after a weekend of cancellations.

    More snow forecast
The schedules at Schiphol Airport near Amsterdam, Heathrow Airport and airports throughout the UK were littered with cancellations and delays.

Transport officials are struggling to cope with the current weather, compounded by the backlog caused by severe weather over the weekend.

Hundreds of tired and hungry passengers have been stranded at airports around Europe, and tempers are fraying, with complaints at Heathrow of too little information and a shortage of basic supplies such as blankets and food.

The UK, France and Germany were badly hit, with forecasters warning of freezing weather all week
At the airport's sprawling Terminal 5, American student Suzie Devoe was one of those facing the prospect of a third night sleeping on the floor as she tried to rearrange a flight to Washington.

"The whole situation has been a complete nightmare," the 20-year-old told the Associated Press news agency. "I just want to get home, I want to be with my family. But I'm being held in a horrible limbo."

The treacherous conditions are costing British Airways some £65m (£100m; 75m euros) a day, analysts say, and the weather is severely impacting UK business in general: the footfall (number of customers) in UK shops at what is normally the busiest time of the year is down by 25%.

The Met Office has warned of more snow and ice in many parts of the country.

Southern England and south Wales were expected to have 5-10cm of snowfall and there were also warnings of further heavy snow for much of Scotland and north-east England, with up to 10cm of snow expected in northern Scotland.

The lowest UK temperature overnight, recorded in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, was -19.6C. Northern Ireland had another bitterly cold night, with -18C recorded at Castlederg in County Tyrone.

Major Pacific Storm Ivan reaches Category Five strength

The Southern California Weather Authority has just released a statement to all media personnel that 'Ivan' has reached the SCWXA storm scale level of Category Five and will do so through Wednesday. "We will have embedded thunderstorms with the system just about anywhere the band of rain and mountain snow is over", said Southern California Weather Authority Meteorologist Kevin Martin. "On Wednesday the cold core will be directly overhead and this is when our chances for severe thunderstorms hit, marking the Category Five criteria official".

The SCWXA has issued two snow product for the forecast area that have gone into effect this afternoon.

The Winter Storm Warning product is for the Ventura, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino Mountains, mainly above 6,000 feet. Copious amounts of snow will be likely, the lowest snow levels on Wednesday with the cold core.

The lesser, but still worthy Blowing Snow Advisory has been issued for the Kern County Mountains above

Colorado weather forecast: 'Epic proportions' of snow could fall in Colo. mountains

DENVER - Many ski resorts will be able to measure the snow in feet within the next few days. The Colorado weather forecast calls for a prolonged period of snow for the Colorado high country through the middle of the week.
    - High elevation mountain towns blasted with snow. The National Weather service says snowfall of "epic proportions" could fall in some areas.

9NEWS Meteorologist Becky Ditchfield says a few flurries may fly in Denver Tuesday and again on Thursday, but measurable snowfall is not expected in the city before Christmas. You will need to head west for a white Christmas.

Tuesday, the winter solstice occurs at 4:38 p.m. and the Solstice coincides with the only complete eclipse of the full moon in 2010. Cloud cover held off just long enough to make for beautiful views of the eclipse overnight along the Front Range.

The last winter solstice full moons were in 1999 and 1980.

Winter is already in full swing in the Colorado high country as a WINTER STORM WARNING remains in effect through Tuesday night for nearly all mountain areas in Colorado, which could see 12 to 36 inches of snow.

The mountains surrounding Vail, Aspen, Snowmass, Crested Butte, Telluride and Silverton should see 1 to 3 feet of snow by Tuesday evening with the heaviest snow on west-facing slopes.

The mountains of Summit County, the Winter Park area and the Rocky Mountain National Park ridge.

West Coast Drenching and Feet of Snow
The weekend kicked off a very stormy period for the West Coast that will extend into Wednesday.

More than 13 feet of snow has fallen in the Sierra Nevada and locally over 18 inches of rain has soaked the mountains of Southern California.

Through Monday, Los Angeles has seen 5.61" of rain. This is more than a third of its average annual rainfall.

The Associated Press reports that in the Wrightwood area of Southern California, about 15 people were evacuated Monday night after the Sheep Creek Wash overflowed and threatened homes, the San Bernardino County Fire Department told the Los Angeles Times. At least three homes sustained water damage.

Also in San Bernardino County, a woman was rescued from her pickup truck Monday night after being swept away in rain-swollen Lytle Creek in the San Bernardino National Forest.Flooding also was reported in Trabuco Canyon in Orange County.

Elsewhere, a 20-mile stretch of scenic Pacific Coast Highway between Malibu and Oxnard was closed after a rock and mudslide Sunday night. The California Highway Patrol said no one was hurt. The same highway also was closed for a time in Orange County by a mudslide at Dana Point.

There's a mini ice age coming, says man who beats weather experts
iers Corbyn not only predicted the current weather, but he believes things are going to get much worse, says Boris Johnson, London's mayor

The man who repeatedly beats the Met Office at its own game

Well, folks, it's tea-time on Sunday and for anyone involved in keeping people moving it has been a hell of a weekend. Thousands have had their journeys wrecked, tens of thousands have been delayed getting away for Christmas; and for those Londoners who feel aggrieved by the performance of any part of our transport services, I can only say that we are doing our level best.

Almost the entire Tube system was running on Sunday and we would have done even better if it had not been for a suicide on the Northern Line, and the temporary stoppage that these tragedies entail. Of London's 700 bus services, only 50 were on diversion, mainly in the hillier areas. On Saturday, we managed to keep the West End plentifully supplied with customers, and retailers reported excellent takings on what is one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

    Advertisement: Story continues below
We have kept the Transport for London road network open throughout all this. We have about 90,000 tons of grit in stock, and the gritters were out all night to deal with this morning's rush. And yet we have to face the reality of the position across the country.

It is no use my saying that London Underground and bus networks are performing relatively well - touch wood - when Heathrow, our major international airport, is still effectively closed two days after the last heavy snowfall; when substantial parts of our national rail network are still struggling; when there are abandoned cars to be seen on hard shoulders all over the country; and when yet more snow is expected today, especially in the north.

In a few brief hours, we are told, the snowy superfortresses will be above us again, bomb bays bulging with blizzard. It may be that in the next hours and days we have to step up our de-icing, our gritting and our shovelling. So let me seize this brief gap in the aerial bombardment to pose a question that is bugging me. Why did the Met Office forecast a "mild winter"?

Do you remember? They said it would be mild and damp, and between one degree and one and a half degrees warmer than average. Well, I am now 46 and that means I have seen more winters than most people on this planet, and I can tell you that this one is a corker.

Hope you are well wrapped up Carol, is it true that is snowing in Hawai?

It's not just congressional action that is likely to put a damper on the first family's Christmas vacation - bad weather in Hawaii may also get President Obama's vacation off to a less than ideal start.

Snow flurries and flash floods aren't exactly the words you want to hear when you're going to a tropical destination, but that's just what the National Weather Service is saying about the Hawaiian islands Monday.

There's a flash flood warning for Oahu, where the president is expected to stay, and a flood watch for all the other islands.

The NWS predicts heavy rain and thunderstorms for Hawaii, and even moderate snowfall of up to five inches on the islands of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. The first family probably won't spot the snow, and at least the temperature is expected to be in the upper 70s, a heck of a lot better than the low of 23 degrees in Washington DC Monday, or the wintry snowy mix expected in the president's other hometown of Chicago.

Pacific quake off Japan islands sparks tsunami alert
A tsunami alert has been issued after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake in the Pacific Ocean off southern Japan, the US Geological Survey (USGS) says.

The epicentre of the earthquake was 155km (95 miles) off the Bonin Islands, some 1,000km south-east of Tokyo, the USGS said.

It struck at a depth of nearly 15km, the agency added.

Japan is often hit by earthquakes. In 1995, a magnitude-7.2 quake in the port city of Kobe killed 6,400 people

Fiercer storm set to hit Southern California

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40762935/ns/weather/

LOS ANGELES — Hillside residents fortified their defenses as fire and police crews staged dramatic water rescues ahead of an even worse storm system expected to hit Southern California on Tuesday evening.

Virtually the entire state has been affected by the storms that began Friday, dumping moisture from far Northern California south to San Diego.

..The National Weather Service predicted an even fiercer storm would roll into Southern California beginning Tuesday night, bringing 2 to 8 inches of rain most areas and up to 10 inches in some mountains.

More than 12 inches of rain have fallen in parts of the Santa Monica Mountains near Los Angeles, and 13 feet of snow has accumulated at Mammoth Mountain ski resort in the Sierra Nevadas.
