Solar surprises raise questions for climate models

Scientists found that a decline in the Sun's activity did not lead as expected to a cooling of the Earth, a surprise finding that could have repercussions for computer models on climate change.

The Sun's activity is known to wax and wane over 11-year cycles, which means that in theory the amount of radiation reaching Earth declines during the "waning" phase.

The new study was carried out between 2004 and 2007 during a solar waning phase.

The amount of energy in the ultraviolet part of the energy spectrum fell, the researchers found.

But, contrary to expectation, radiation in the visible part of the energy spectrum increased, rather than declined, which caused a warming effect.

The investigation, based mainly on satellite data, is important because of a debate over how far global warming is attributable to Man or to natural causes.

Climatologists say that warming is overwhelmingly due to man-made greenhouse gases -- invisible carbon emissions from coal, gas and coal that linger in the atmosphere and trap solar heat.

But a vocal lobby of sceptics say that this is flawed or alarmist, and point out that Earth has known periods of cooling and warming that are due to variations in the Sun's output.

"These results are challenging what we thought we knew about the Sun's effect on our climate," said lead author Joanna Haigh, a professor at Imperial College London where she is also a member of the Grantham Institute for Climate change.

"However, they only show us a snapshot of the Sun's activity and its behaviour over the three years of our study could be an anomaly."

Insisting on caution, Haigh said that if the Sun turned out to have a warming effect during the "waning" part of the cycle, it might also turn out to have a cooling effect during the "waxing" part of the cycle.

In that case, greenhouse gases would be more to blame than thought for the perceptible rise in global temperatures over the past century.

"We cannot jump to any conclusions based on what we have found during this comparatively short period," Haigh said. "We need to carry out further studies to explore the Sun's activity, and the patterns that we have uncovered, on longer timescales." These types of comments are so bloody typical they just make me want to rip my hair out.

The study is published in Nature, the weekly British science journal.

This is so true. I have been surveying the Geomagnetic lines now for sometime, and I thought that during the solar minimum, I would of thought that the lines would really educe during these times. But instead they maintained their strength, but sharpened in form.

The next thing is the magnetic field of the earth. The results show a real reduction in the field strength. Surely that would reduce the flow rate or the strength of the Geomagnetic lines, but no. They are just going from clarity to clarity. I say clarity because that is what it appears to be. I am not sure if the flow rate or strenght of the line doesn't appear to change, just width and definition, or clarity.

Just an observation from my end of the spectrum.

United Nations relief officials have said that the floods reported on Monday, were caused by torrential rains and exceptionally high water levels of the Niger and other rivers.

Warm weather brings October mosquitoes

Mild weather and standing water has caused an unusual October mosquito outbreak across southern Manitoba, including Winnipeg. Winnipeg entomologist Taz Stuart said the mosquitoes will keep on buzzing until the temperature takes a big dip. "It's perfect flying conditions," said Stewart. "Mosquitoes don't die unless there is a frost and there hasn't been a good killing frost ... yet."

He said the mosquitoes that are still active are not the disease-bearing culex tarsalis variety. But he said the best away to avoid being bitten is to stay indoors between 6 and 7 p.m. The City of Winnipeg stopped fogging for mosquitoes in mid-September.

‘Megi’ Could Be A Supertyphoon – PAGASA

MANILA, Philippines - Tropical storm "Megi" could become a supertyphoon when it arrives in the country this weekend, weather forecasters warned Thursday.

The storm is expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility on Saturday and will make landfall Monday afternoon, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Northern Luzon, Tuguegarao, and the Mountain Province will be directly affected, PAGASA said.

The agency has already alerted concerned government agencies to prepare for the typhoon.

PAGASA officials said its Subic radar station is up and running and only needs a few calibrations.

The agency also increased the number of weather balloons it is deploying.

"Megi" was located 1,440 kilometers east of the Visayas as of 4:00 p.m. Thursday.

The storm, which is currently packing maximum wind speeds of 74 kilometers per hour and gusts of 111 kph, is moving west-northwest toward Luzon at 20kph, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

It will gain strength, with the JMA expecting Megi's wind speeds to reach 148 kph and gusts of up to 212 kph by Sunday.

The US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center, meanwhile, said the tropical storm will be packing wind speeds of up to 222 kph and gusts 268 kph of when it makes a direct hit in Northern Luzon by Monday.

SAN DIEGO — Water service was shut off and traffic disrupted in three neighborhoods on Sunday, a time when fewer crews than normal are available to do repair work, according to the city Public Utilities Department.

While multiple water main breaks -- typically the result of aging pipes -- do happen from time to time, they are an uncommon occurrence, acknowledged public utilities spokesman Arian Collins.

"I'd definitely classify it as unusual, and on top of that, we don’t have enough crews to work on all three on a Sunday," he said.

The first water main problem struck at 7:30 a.m. in the Talmadge area, leaving about a dozen apartment buildings and a mini-mall without water, said Collins.

While the break in the cast iron water main on 47th Street just south of Monroe Avenue caused minimal damage to the street, water service is not expected to be restored until 8 p.m., he said.

It's hard to say how many people are affected in the area apartment houses, Collins added. Also affected, he said, is a mini-mall at 47th and El Cajon Boulevard.

A second water leak occurred around 9 a.m. in the Linda Vista area on the 7300 block of Fulton Street near West Ingersoll Street.

Water rushed onto the yards of two homes, causing some soil to wash away, Collins said.

A crew is at the site trying to excavate the area, he noted. As a result, the 7300 block of Fulton is closed off, and water service isn't expected to be restored until 10 p.m., Collins said.

A third break, in downtown San Diego, may take longer to resolve because of a shortage of available crews.

West Broadway between India Street and Kettner Boulevard were closed to traffic around 10 a.m. after a 16-inch water main serving the area broke. The block in front of the Santa Fe Depot also was closed, Collins said.

Water serving One America Plaza on West Broadway was shut off, he added, as well as at least one other high-rise. There is no estimate when the repair will be complete and water service restored.

Because the downtown break involves a large water main, a hydraulic crew may need to be called out, Collins said.

Super Typhoon Megi hits northern Philippines

An intense "super typhoon" has made landfall in the northern Philippines, lashing the area with heavy rains and winds of more than 225km/h (140mph).

Thousands of people in the path of storm Megi have fled their homes. Emergency services are on high alert and schools are closed in many areas.

Megi is the strongest storm the Philippines has faced for four years.

Stunning evidence of a Caldera volcano in Arkansas!

I am not convinced that all of these recent earthquakes in Arkansas and Oklahoma are from fracking. While studying the geology of the region I noticed something interesting. There is a pattern starting to form suggesting that the recent earthquakes are a result of increasing volcanic activity. You are probably thinking, if there were a volcano in Arkansas we would know about it. Although unproven and highly speculative, the following information shows evidence of active volcanism in the state of arkansas. I plotted all of the evidence I found on google maps and may have found the reason for the recent rise in seismic activity. The map is at the bottom of the post.

Floods hit central Vietnam again after heavy rain

The death toll after several days of heavy rain in central Vietnam is 32, with others reported missing.

Officials said most of the deaths were in the provinces of Ha Tinh and Nghe An with more than 150,000 homes under water.

Floods last week killed 66 people and left 17 missing. Many have people returned to their homes only to be evacuated again.

Ash And Gas Plume From Klyuchevskoi Volcano Stretching For 418 Km

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY - The ash and gas plume coming from the Klyuchevskoi volcano in Russia's Far East has been reported to stretch out 418 kilometers to the southeast. An ash cloud has been reported 247 kilometers off the volcano.

There is no danger to the nearby settlements, the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences told Itar-Tass on Monday.

According to the service, spews of gas, fumes and volcanic tuff have been registered in the volcano over the past 24 hours. Residents of the settlement of Kozyrevsk said they saw a flow of lava coming down the Klyuchevskoi's southeastern slope. Airglow has been reported over the Klyuchevskoi crater, which testifies to the presence of scorching lava.

Klyuchevskoi (or Klyuchevskaya Sopka) stratovolcano is considered to be the highest (4,750 metres above sea level) active volcano of Eurasia. Its steep, symmetrical cone towers about 100 kilometres from the Bering Sea. It is situated in Kamchatka's east some 32 kilometers off the settlement of Klyuchi with 5,000 residents.

Klyuchevskoi's first recorded eruption occurred in 1697, and it has been almost continuously active ever since, as have many of its neighbouring volcanoes. The volcano was first climbed in 1788 by Daniel Gauss and two other members of the Billings Expedition. No other ascents were then recorded until 1931, when several climbers were killed by flying lava on the descent. As similar dangers still exist today, few ascents are made.

Klyuchevskoi is considered sacred by some indigenous peoples, being viewed by them as the location at which the world was created. It is said that when the god Volkov created the world, this was the point at which he held it, and so it remains unfinished, unsealed, thus the volcanic activity.

The volcano erupts once in five to six years. Beginning in August 2009, the Klyuchevskoi volcano began another eruption cycle.
