Winter weather shuts down the Midwest
Wintry weather takes aim at Florida as the Midwest struggles to recover from a weekend storm that dumped more than a foot of snow in some areas, then sent temperatures below zero.
In northern Indiana, frigid air racing over Lake Michigan churned up lake-effect snow that stranded "dozens upon dozens" of drivers in their vehicles, says Lt. Chris Eckert of the Porter County, Ind., Sheriff's Department.
At Family Express, a gas station in Westville, Ind., clerk Sandi Oller could barely see the fuel pumps from the store windows Monday. She called conditions outside "a great big mess."
Weather Channel meteorologist Brian Fortier says heavy snow will continue until Wednesday morning in southwest Michigan, northwest Indiana, northeast Ohio and western New York state. Cleveland could see an additional 1 to 2 feet of snow, he says.
The cold has roared into South Florida. Monday, the National Weather Service issued wind chill warnings and advisories as far south as Miami, where wind chills were forecast to drop to the low 20s Tuesday morning.
At Vo-LaSalle Farms in DeLeon Springs, Fla., workers covered hydroponic tomato and strawberry gardens with blanket-like coverings that protect fragile fruit from cold. "We run water under that, and we hope for the best," owner Bruce Crump says.
Minnesota endured the worst of the cold Monday. International Falls bottomed out at 27 below zero. It was the coldest location in the lower 48 states Monday, the weather service says. It was minus-19 in Ely, Minn., Monday morning, says Mark Olson, owner of Canoe Country Outfitters. "Some people prefer winter over summer," he says. "It's never too cold."
