Deep 6.0 magnitude earthquake strikes Argentina
June 2, 2012 – ARGENTINA – A moderate earthquake measuring 6.0 shook northern Argentina on Saturday, U.S. researchers reported. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. The epicenter of the tremor, which occurred at 4:52 am (0752 GMT), was located sparsely-populated region 129 kilometers (80 miles) east from the Bolivian city of Tarija and 314 kilometers west from the Paraguayan town of Mariscal Estigarribia, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The depth of the epicenter was 529 kilometers. The reading was based on the open-ended Moment Magnitude scale used by U.S. seismologists, which measures the area of the fault that ruptured and the total energy released. This is the second 6.0+ magnitude earthquake to strike the country in a week. A 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck the region of Santiago del Estero, Argentina on May 28, 2012. –Khaleej Times

Scientists warns Pakistan of dangers from threat of 7.5 magnitude earthquake that could destroy the cityThe Earthquake/Seismic Activity Log - Page 33 6-1-2012_52033_l
June 2, 2012 – PAKISTAN – Renowned Scientist and Assistant Professor at Geology Department of University of Balochistan, Deen Muhammad Kakar has said that Global Positioning System machine reports have suggested that an earthquake of 7.5 Magnitude intensity and powerful like that of 1935 might hit Quetta city and adjoining areas. He was talking to media persons here on Thursday. He said that GPS machines installed in areas including Quetta, Chaman, Saranan, Surkhab, Pishin, Ziarat, Shahrag, Harnai, Loralai, Qila Saifullah, Muslim Bagh, Lakpass, Kalat and Sorab have indicated that mountainous areas including Koh Sulman, Koh Kirthar, Quetta and northern areas are in eight-millimeter annual movement to South and due to this movement a great stress is being accumulated under soil. “Due to this great stress, chances of a 7.5 Magnitude earthquake at Richter Scale to hit Quetta have been emerged,” the Scientist warned. He further said that Geology Department of University of Balochistan, Civil Engineering Department of NED University Karachi and Center of Excellence of Peshawar University were busy in compiling research reports with the help of GPS machines and other scientific equipments on emerging of possible and powerful earthquakes in future. He said that presently population of Quetta has exceeded from 2.5 million while a large number of high-rise buildings and multistory shopping centers have been erected in the city adding these buildings were built while fully violating 1935 Building Code Laws. He said that present official and non-official buildings would collapsed and caved in if an earthquake of 6.5 Magnitude hit Quetta adding that then how these building would face 7.5 Magnitude earthquake in future. He regretted that sub-standard material was used in construction of buildings in new populations around the old Quetta city, which would collapse in a powerful tremor. He said that another important aspect is that in case of a high Magnitude earthquake, natural gas supply pipelines would burst causing eruption of a huge fire, which would engulf the city. He further said that powerful earthquake would cause razing of high-rise buildings and due to which the roads and streets of the city would be closed while people would be buried under their debris. He advised people to keep items at their homes to deal with the situation caused by earthquake including dry food like pulses, grams, dry milk and water, torch, battery radio, first aid kit, fire extinguishing equipment and diary containing emergency phone numbers. He also advised citizens living in multistory buildings not to try run outside of their flats immediately when earthquake jolts their building as saying the building might collapse within seconds and people trying to run out might get buried under its debris. –The News

New study says original Earth did not have tectonic plates, ‘there was a dramatic shift in dynamics on Earth’
June 3, 2012 – EARTH – The current theory of continental drift provides a good model for understanding terrestrial processes through history. However, while plate tectonics is able to successfully shed light on processes up to 3 billion years ago, the theory isn’t sufficient in explaining the dynamics of Earth and crust formation before that point and through to the earliest formation of planet, some 4.6 billion years ago. This is the conclusion of Tomas Naæraa of the Nordic Center for Earth Evolution at the Natural History Museum of Denmark, a part of the University of Copenhagen. His new doctoral dissertation has just been published by the journal Nature. “Using radiometric dating, one can observe that Earth’s oldest continents were created in geodynamic environments which were markedly different than current environments characterized by plate tectonics. Therefore, plate tectonics as we know it today is not a good model for understanding the processes at play during the earliest episodes of Earth’s history, those beyond 3 billion years ago. There was another crust dynamic and crust formation that occurred under other processes,” explains Tomas Næraa, who has been a PhD student at the Natural History Museum of Denmark and the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland – GEUS. A wide range of phenomena from volcanism, earthquakes and undersea earthquakes (and pursuant tsunamis) to variations in climate and species development on Earth can be explained by the plate tectonics model, globally recognized during the 1960′s. Tomas Næraa can now demonstrate that the half-century old model no longer suffices. “Plate tectonics theory can be applied to about 3 billion years of the Earth’s history. However, the Earth is older, up to 4.567 billion years old. We can now demonstrate that there has been a significant shift in the Earth’s dynamics. Thus, the Earth, under the first third of its history, developed under conditions other than what can be explained using the plate tectonics model,” explains Tomas Næraa. Tomas is currently employed as a project researcher at GEUS. –Science Daily

Northern Italy rattled by 7 tremors in one day
June 3, 2012 – ITALY – There has been a fall in the number of earthquake tremors recorded in areas across the provinces of Mantova, Modena and Ferrara, where two earthquakes on May 20 and 29 tore devastated churches and businesses, leaving a total of 19 people dead. Between 07:00 and 13:00 today, Italy’s institute for the monitoring of seismic activity (INGV) recorded 7 tremors, compared to several dozen over the same period of time in recent days. This morning, the magnitude of the tremors was thought to be falling and had not risen above a 2.6 on the Richter Scale, but jus hours ago, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck 55 km from Bologna, Italy. –AGI.it

    The Earthquake/Seismic Activity Log - Page 33 Seattle_Fault
Seattle Fault Zone poses significantly higher risks than previously thought
May 31, 2012 – SEATTLE - The Seattle fault zone, a series of active-east-west trending thrust faults, poses seismic threat to the Puget Sound region. The 900-930 AD rupture is the only known large earthquake along the Seattle Fault, making geological records of prehistoric events the only clues to the earthquake potential of the fault. While a graduate student at the University of Washington, Maria Arcos looked at tsunami and debris flow deposits – both evidence of a paleo-quake – in the coastal marsh at Gorst, Washington. She also identified evidence of at least three meters of uplift that preceded a tsunami, which was followed by a sandy debris flow from Gorst Creek, and suggests that the 900-930 AD earthquake covered a greater geographic area than previous fault interpretations. The revised height and width of deformation caused by the quake may influence current interpretations of the Seattle fault’s structure. This study found a minimum of three meters of uplift at Gorst, which is double the amount of previous fault models for the same location. A broader zone of deformation, says Arcos, may indicate either a wider zone of slip along the dip of the fault, a shallower dip or splay faults farther to the south. –Physics http://phys.org/news/2012-05-seattle-fault-zone-.html

5.9 magnitude earthquake causes tall buildings to sway in Indonesian capital
June 4, 2012 – JAKARTA, Indonesia — A strong earthquake off Indonesia’s coast caused tall buildings to sway in the capital Monday afternoon, but officials said there was no threat of a tsunami. Office workers said the swaying was felt for about 10 seconds in high-rise buildings around the city of 9 million people. Even two-story residential homes shook strongly. No damage or casualties were immediately reported. The U.S. Geological Survey said the 5.9-magnitude quake hit 100 kilometers (62 miles) southwest of Sukabumi, a town in West Java province. It was about 171 kilometers (106 miles) from Jakarta and 67 kilometers (41 miles) beneath the floor of the Indian Ocean. Indonesia’s Meteorology and Geophysics Agency had the preliminary magnitude at 6.1. Slight discrepancies are common in the initial measurements. Indonesia has frequent earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,’” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin, but it is uncommon for tremors to be felt in Jakarta. –Daily Reporter

6.6 and 6.2 magnitude earthquakes strikes seafloor just southwest of Panama
June 4, 2012 – PANAMA - A shallow 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck the sea-floor just SW of Panama. The earthquake was preceded by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake in the same region. The strong magnitude earthquakes erupted along the jagged corner of the Nazca plate which is subducting under the South American plate. The epicenter of the quakes was 230 miles (370 km) south of David, Panama, at a depth of 6.0 miles (10.5 km). There was no tsunami threat, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. The quake was reported to have occurred at 6:45 local time (0045 GMT). Yesterday, the same region was rattled by a 4.7 earthquake at a depth of about 10.5 km. A low level tsunami alert was issued for the region but was later canceled.

Strongest earthquake ever recorded west of Ireland stuns geologists
June 7, 2012 – IRELAND – A leading seismologist has said yesterday’s earthquake off the west coast was “unexpected” and poses “very interesting questions for geologists.” The earthquake, which registered a magnitude 4.0 on the Richter scale, was recorded as 60 km west of Belmullet, Co Mayo, at a depth of 3 km, at 8.58 am. It was the largest local seismic event ever recorded, according to Tom Blake of the Irish National Seismic Network (INSN) and the Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies. It was also the second-largest local earthquake on record in either Britain or Ireland, he said – the first being of 5.4 magnitude on July 19th, 1984, off the west coast of Wales and felt in Waterford and Wicklow. A 2.7 magnitude tremor was recorded in Lisdoonvarna, Co Clare, in May 2010. The Irish Coast Guard recorded instances of structural damage to houses in Erris, Co Mayo, yesterday and the British Geological Survey said the impact was felt in Galway, Mayo and Sligo. The Geological Survey of Ireland said earthquakes of this magnitude at this depth were “not very unusual although not common.” However, Mr Blake said that while the earthquake was classified as “moderate”, it was “significant” in that it challenged existing information about seismic activity off the west coast. The location, just 23km south to southeast of the Corrib gas wells, prompted a call by Sinn Féin councillor for Mayo Rose Conway-Walsh for reassurance that this was not connected to seismic testing Shell EP Ireland was due to initiate on the Corrib gas field last Friday. She also said many concerned residents wanted to know whether the existing Corrib gas infrastructure had been damaged. North Mayo hostel owner Betty Schult said the earthquake had shaken the foundations of her 250-year-old stone cottage and she was concerned about the impact on the offshore pipeline for the Corrib gas project and the refinery, situated on bog. Mr Blake said he had examined the seismic traces and they were “caused by earthquakes and nothing else.” Shell EP Ireland said the seismic survey had not started and it had “no reason to believe that this event has had any impact on the sub-sea infrastructure.” “However, as a precautionary measure, a visual inspection of the offshore infrastructure will be carried out in the coming days,” it said. Phil O’Hara of Aclare, Co Sligo, reported a chunk of her chimney on the ground, while in Westport, Co Mayo, Lorella Errani said she was reading about the earthquake near her mother’s home in Ravenna, Italy, when she heard a “deep rumbling noise.” The tremors had caused “no unusual wave activity”, said Irish Coast Guard officer Ray Malanaphy. The Coast Guard said it had confirmed this with two vessels working on the Corrib gas field. –Irish Times

Southern hemisphere rattled by wave of moderate seismic earthquakes
June 7, 2012 – SOUTH AMERICA - A strong 5.8 (6.2 EMSC) magnitude earthquake shook Maule, Chile but there were no reports of damage, the Andean neighbors’ national emergency offices said. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck 102 km (63 miles) from Maule and 282 km (175 miles) from Santiago, Chile. The earthquake was followed by a 4.7 magnitude earthquake in Coquimbo, Chile. A third earthquake, a 6.0 magnitude quake struck southern Peru with an epicenter 119 km (74 miles) WNW (298°) from Arequipa, Peru and 648 km (402 miles) SE (131°) from Lima, Peru. The earthquake in Peru struck at a depth of 99.7 km (62.0 miles). Seismic tension has been building along the Nazca tectonic plate bordering South America over the last few days. Similarly, Fiji was hit by a deep 5.9 magnitude earthquake and Tonga was rattled by a 5.1 quake. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage in Chile, according to a spokeswoman for Chile’s state emergency office (ONEMI).

Western Turkey rattled by 5.1 magnitude earthquake
June 9, 2012 – TURKEY - A 5.1-magnitude earthquake has struck the western parts of Turkey, including Istanbul, shaking apartment buildings, rattling windows and causing residents to rush into the streets. The tremor was also felt in neighboring Bulgaria, in the municipalities of Burgas, Nessebar, Plovdiv and Kardzhali. According to the National Institute in Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography, at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, BAS, the quake occurred shortly before midnight. The epicenter was registered in the Marmara Sea, a few kilometers from the town of Tekirdag and Marmara Ereglisi. It was at a depth of 10 km. The quake was followed by two light aftershocks. There were no immediate reports of casualties and damages, but the quake threw people into panic. -Novinite

Double 4.2 magnitude earthquakes rattle towns in Australia’s southeast
June 9, 2012 –AUSTRALIA - Officials in the New England region of the Australian state of New South Wales are breathing a sigh of relief, with no major damage found from two earthquakes that hit on Friday night. Residents were shaken when two magnitude-4.2 quakes hit within a few minutes of each other. More than 400 people have reported feeling tremors or hearing loud noises. Many called police because they thought they were being robbed. Gunnedah Shire Mayor Adam Marshall says he has never heard of a tremor in the region before. “I guess no-one’s really thought about checking their insurance policy for anything like earthquake damage,” he said. But there have been no reports so far of damage beyond a few windows in need of replacement. Resident Jeff Silvey says it sounded like a jumbo jet and it set off dogs barking all along his street. “I thought it was just a jumbo jet but then everyone else started texting saying no it’s an earthquake,” he said. “The whole house shook and all the windows and even the dogs got scared – we had to bring the dogs in.” The tremor was felt by residents as far away as the coastal town of South West Rocks, more than 200 kilometres from the quake’s epicenter. Geoscience Australia has warned there is a high chance of weaker aftershocks in the coming weeks. Jonathon Bathgate, a seismologist with Geoscience Australia, says the New England region has had a few earthquakes in the past 100 years. “There’s been about 13 of this sort of magnitude in that area in these sort of times,” he said. Mr. Bathgate says it is all to do with the underground plates Australia sits on. “The continent’s moving north at about seven centimetres every year and that just builds up stresses across the rocks. So the overall process is the same for big earthquakes,” he said. –Radio Australia

Italy’s hospitals at risk in earthquake-prone regions: 4.5 magnitude quake strikes northern Italy
June 9, 2012 – ITALY – Italian hospitals are old and at risk of suffering severe damage in the event of an earthquake. Around 15 percent of the country’s hospitals were constructed before 1900, or which 74, or 9 percent, were built before 1800, according to data from the Italian Civil Protection agency, obtained by Adnkronos Health. “The oldest hospitals are considered at seismic risk,” said Giuseppe Paradiso, an engineer with Bari-based Gedi di Altamura construction firm. He said the type of cement used puts the structure at risk in the case of an earthquake because of “non-existing regulations. You built without thinking about the territory” he said. Italy is one of the world’s most seismic countries. A pair of earthquakes last month killed 25 people and caused around 5 billion euros in damage. More than 300 people perished when a quake struck the central Abruzzo region in April 2009. “The older buildings were built with the seismic norms of the time. But today you need to make important changes to be in line with new regulations,” said Daniela Pedrini, president of the Italian Society of Health Architecture and Engineering. Ironically, northern Italy was hit was another 4.5 magnitude earthquake today. The earthquake struck at a depth of 14.5 km (9.0 miles) and the epicenter was 82 km (50 miles) NNE of Venice, Italy and 473 km (293 miles) N of ROME, Italy. It appears the seismic unrest in northern Italy is now diffusing across the region. –Adnkronos TEP

Strong activity reported at Italy’s Stromboli volcano
June 9, 2012 – ITALY- Stromboli volcano is in a phase of strong activity. Reports by visitors and images taken with the webcams show that in particular the northwestern vent in the summit crater often produces strong explosions that shower the crater terrace with incandescent lava. Since the last lateral eruption in March 2007, Stromboli has been in a heightened state of activity overall during most of the past years, indicating that magma levels inside the conduit are relatively high. The question is when again the magma finds its way out through a fissure on the flank on Sciara del Fuoco to produce another effusive eruption with a new lava flow. –Volcano Discovery

Awakening? Earthquake swarm reported at Chile's San Pedro-Pellado volcano- eruption would be first in recorded history
    The Earthquake/Seismic Activity Log - Page 33 Tatara_sanpedro_chile-660x436
June 8, 2012 – CHILE – Apparently, the SERNAGEOMIN has been monitoring an earthquake swarm at Chile’s Tatara-San Pedro (also known as San Pedro-Pellado), possibly numbering in the hundreds of small earthquakes over the last few days. The reports are a little scant and the information coming from different parts of the Chilean government are contradictory: the regional governor of the area was quoted as saying that “it is of volcanic earthquakes, so we are on alert” while the regional director from ONEMI said “at first thought that we were facing a volcanic earthquakes, but known reports of the analysis has led to the conclusion that we were facing tectonic type earthquakes.” The article in La Tercera also mentions that the volcano hasn’t erupted in “decades” while the Global Volcanism Program’s entry for San Pedro says that the last eruption is “unknown,” likely in the Holocene (last 10,000 years). So, there seems to be lots of confusion (not to mention La Tercera calling the volcano “Catinao”). If this is renewed activity at the volcano, it is potentially the first in recorded history. –Wired

Mainland Australia rattled by 10th tremor in less than 7 days
June 8, 2012 – AUSTRALIA - An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 was recorded between Tamworth and Gunnedah tonight. Emergency services received phone calls from areas including Tamworth, Gunnedah and Maules Creek from about 9.30 pm reporting that the ground moved and buildings rattled. No one has been reported injured and there have been no reports of damage. There has been reported of sirens in Armidale. Geoscience Australia reported a quake of 4.2 magnitude at 9.31 pm. Geoscience Australia said the quake could have been felt up to 76 kilometres away and caused damage up to 6 kilometres away. It shows there were two distinct tremors. Geoscience Australia data shows it was the 10th tremor recorded in mainland Australia this week. It had a depth of 17 kilometres. Police media said they had received a number of calls from Tamworth residents who reported their windows had shaken and thought someone was trying to break in. The quake struck west of Manilla north of Lake Keepit. The quake is not considered one to launch a tsunami. A Boggabri resident told the Newcastle Herald they felt the quake. ‘‘I just felt a quake like ten minutes ago, it shook my whole house,’’ he said. Richard Turner, of Invergowrie said there was one tremor and then another two minutes later. ‘‘I contacted other neighbours they confirmed they had the same thing,’’ he said. “A deep rumble and things shaking. Twitter and hashtag Tamworth was abuzz in the minutes after the quake. ‘‘Long weekend started with a bang,’’ Benjamin Paton tweeted. ‘‘First short like a strong sudden wind. Second about two minutes later, strong, longer, house shuddering. ‘‘All is fine, no damage, and all are safe, just a little shook up.’’ Others were quick to blame coal seam gas for the incident. –Newcastle Herald

Intense earthquake swarm rattles Alaskan peninsula
June 13, 2012 – ALASKA – An intense earthquake swarm continues to shake the peninsula of Alaska. A 4.8 was also reported in neighboring Kamchatka. The depth of the earthquakes striking Alaska range from 200 km to about 40 km (24.9 miles) and most are occurring about 429 km from the city of Anchorage. Alaska is without a doubt the most tectonically-active region in the United States. Alaska experiences more than half of all earthquakes recorded in North America each year. This is mainly due to Alaska’s unique location, which fits like a piece of a jigsaw puzzle on the northern rim of the Pacific Basin. At the northwest corner of the North America, Alaska is situated at the receiving end of the Pacific Plate as it slides laterally past southeast Alaska and collides directly with the North American Plate across south-central Alaska and along the length of Aleutian Island Chain. The accumulation of tectonic stresses at depth along the plate boundaries and the translation of those stresses into the shallower crust of southern Alaska are believed to be the driving forces behind the high level of earthquake activity that occurs in our state. We’re also seeing seismic stress rippling up the coast of the U.S. from Baja to Alaska. We may be heading for another seismic stress release. –The Extinction Protocol

June 13, 2012 – INDIA – A series of unexplained, low-intensity tremors being felt on a daily basis in two separate pockets in south Mumbai over the last few weeks have forced office-goers to ask for a detailed seismological investigation of the area. The offices being affected include the higher floors in a row of buildings, particularly Bharat House and Apollo House, at Bombay Samachar Marg in Kala Ghoda, and the Western Railway’s headquarters and administrative buildings on both sides of the road at Churchgate. The tremors occur between 4 and 6 pm every day, almost like clockwork, and last about 2-3 seconds. Western Railway has written a letter to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) asking them to look into the matter, trace the cause of the tremors, and advise if there is any potential danger to the buildings. When contacted, Sharat Chandrayan, the chief public relations officer at WR, confirmed: “Certain employees working on the higher floors of the administrative building were feeling tremors at certain times of the day. We have sent a letter to the IMD to conduct a thorough scientific investigation.” Though Chandrayan declined to give any further details, another WR official, who asked not to be named, said: “The tremors were first experienced in the south-east corner of the heritage (Headquarters) building, where the Chief Operations Manager sits. Now they are also being felt on the top floor of glass-facade Administrative building above the railway station, particularly in the auditing and construction departments.” Over in Kala Ghoda, the daily tremors started about a month ago. “We dismissed them initially, but they’ve now become a regular phenomenon. Our bosses initially thought it was hoax, but realized it was a serious complaint once they felt the tremors as well,” Sachin Rajguru, an employee of Bharat Lines, a shipping company that has an office on fourth floor of Bharat House, told Mumbai Mirror. Similarly, Kamlesh Jaiswal, who works at Batliboi, which has an office on fifth floor of the same building, confirmed that the tremors were the talk of his workplace as well. “We experience tremors for a few moments every day. They always happen sometime between 4 pm and 5 pm. It’s a scary situation because no one seems to know what’s causing them.” –Pune Mirror

Largest earthquake in 109 years rattles Victoria Australia
June 19, 2012 – AUSTRALIA - A magnitude-5.3 earthquake has shaken a large area of Victoria this evening. It hit about 9:00pm (AEST), with the epicenter near Moe in west Gippsland, about 120 kilometers south-east of Melbourne. Geoscience Australia says the 5.3 quake had a depth of about 10km and rumbled through Melbourne and communities including Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong and Shepparton. People have reported hearing a roaring noise, with reports of cracks occurring in the walls and floors of homes. Victoria Police say they have received a number of calls in relation to the tremor. Seismologist David Jepsen says there have been some aftershocks of around magnitude 3.5 near the epicenter. He says the initial quake was close to the earth’s surface. “[It was a] shallow earthquake. That’s why people felt it so strongly,” he said. “You do get the rolling because you get the surface waves that get generated that people can feel quite strongly.” Some Melbourne residents have reported seeing windows shaking during the tremor. Graham Miller, a resident in Heathmont in Melbourne’s east, says it was the biggest earthquake he has ever felt. ‘The most severe earthquake that I would say we’ve experienced at Heathmont in 60 years to my knowledge,” he said. “The shaking continued for about 45 seconds, and my whole house was vibrating visibly.” Shannon Starab McGill, a resident in Badger Creek, north-east of Melbourne, also felt the quake. “Shook the heck out of the house and the kids woke up quite startled! Yikes!” he wrote on Facebook. Professor Mike Sandiford of the School of Earth Sciences at the University of Melbourne says it is an unusual event. “It was a significant shaking event. We don’t often get earthquakes which shake much of Melbourne,’ he said. “Every few years we have an earthquake which tends to be to the south east of Melbourne in Gippsland which impacts the eastern suburbs. “Shaking the eastern suburbs and even more rarely gets to the city centre.” –ABC News News

June 22, 2012 – SOUTH PACIFIC - A powerful earthquake of 6.0 magnitude struck in the Pacific Ocean off Australia’s remote and sparsely-populated Macquarie Island on Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS reported that the quake struck at a shallow depth of 9 km or 6.2 miles at about 3:30 p.m. local time, with its epicenter located some 14 miles northwest of Macquarie Island. There were no immediate reports of causalities or damages, and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center is yet to respond to the tremor. Macquarie Island is located in the southwest corner of the Pacific Ocean, about half-way between New Zealand and Antarctica. Politically, it is part of Tasmania, Australia, since 1900 and became a Tasmanian State Reserve in 1978. In 1997 it became a World Heritage Site. The island is home to the entire Royal Penguin population on earth during their annual nesting season. Ecologically, the remote island is part of the Antipodes Subantarctic Islands tundra eco-region. Since 1948, the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) has maintained a permanent base on the island. The population of the base, the island’s only human inhabitants, usually varies from 20 to 40 people over the year. –RTT News

June 21, 2012 – ICELAND – Increased seismic activity was detected in Mýrdalsjökull glacier in south Iceland, under which the volcano Katla lies, last night. Twenty-six minor earthquakes were picked up by sensors, all of which had their epicenter within the Katla crater. A seismic activity expert on watch at the Icelandic Meteorological Office informed that us the earthquake swarm had started at 1 am and continued through 5 am. However, there is no reason to be concerned about an imminent volcanic eruption or glacial outburst in Katla. The earthquakes were all shallow and originated in seismic activity in the geothermal system. –Iceland Review

    Oman records back-to-back earthquake tremors
    http://www.timesofoman.com/echoice.aspx?detail=6849
June 21, 2012 – OMAN - Two back-to-back earthquakes were recorded closer to Oman by the Earthquake Monitoring Centre at Sultan Qaboos University in the last 24 hours but there were no reports of damage to property or loss of life. While an earthquake measuring 4.8-magnitude was reported in the Arabian Gulf around midnight, the other was reported from southern Iran with 4.2-magnitude on Tuesday evening. Speaking to Times of Oman, Dr. Issa Al Hussain, director, Earthquake Monitoring Centre, Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), said that they record around 150 earthquakes from all over the globe every month. “Locally we record around four to five quakes every month but most of them are weak and its epicenter is far away from Oman,” he said. But given Oman’s close vicinity to where the Arabian plates meet the Eurasian plates, how much risk does it pose to the Sultanate? Dr. Hussain said places like Khasab and Musandam in northern Oman have earthquake potential as the Arabian plates meet the Eurasian plates. “But we have to remember that Oman lies in the low risk zone so there is little chance of earthquake.” –Times of Oman

2.8 magnitude earthquake reported under Japan’s Mt. Fuji volcano
    The Earthquake/Seismic Activity Log - Page 33 2012-06-23-10.29.15)
June 24, 2012 – Japan - A 2.8 magnitude earthquake was reported under the Mt. Fuji volcano on the 24th of June. Mt. Fuji last erupted in 1707, but the volcano began showing signs of growing unrest this year – indication it is waking up from its long slumber as we reported. On June 20, 2012, a rare anvil or hat-shaped cloud appeared near Mount Fuji after a strong typhoon swept through Japan. The cloud, called “tsurushi-gumo,” or hanging cloud, was seen on Wednesday morning. The phenomenon occurs when winds around Mount Fuji become strong, or after tropical storms. But experts say such clouds rarely appear at this time of the year. The cloud disappeared after about 30 minutes when the sky became overcast. -Wish - Fukushima Diary

6.3 magnitude earthquake strikes remote region of western China
June 30, 2012 – CHINA – A magnitude 6.3 quake struck a remote region of western China, close to the Kazakhstan border, early on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said. The quake, initially reported as a magnitude 6.5, struck at 5:07 a.m. on Saturday (2107 GMT on Friday), and was centered 94 miles southwest of the town of Shihezi in Xinjiang province. “It’s a very quiet, remote, mountainous area that is sparsely populated. A the moment we have no report of any casualty or damage but we are watching closely,” USGS Geophysicist Chen Shengzao told Reuters by telephone from Golden, Colorado. The USGS said the quake was very shallow, only 6.1 miles below the Earth’s surface. Chen said that because of its magnitude and very shallow depth, the quake would have been widely felt. A 6.3 quake is capable of causing severe damage. –Reuters

Earthquake swarm strikes Baja, California as tension builds along the fault
July 1, 2012 – CALIFORNIA - An intense earthquake swarm has erupted around Baja, California following the stress eruption of shallow twin 4.6 and 4.7 magnitude earthquakes. The two earthquakes have produced about 16 notable aftershock tremors. The Pacific Plate is being nudged northward and the North American plate is moving southward and tension is building along the southern region of the strike-slip fault known as Laguna-Salada. The region saw a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in 1892 and a second major stress eruption occurred with another 7.2 earthquake on April 4, 2010. Prior to 2010, the region had not produced a major earthquake in over 100 years. Since 2010, the region has only grown more restless. 2012 saw a notable increase in tension along the region of the fault which has been exacerbated by movements of the Cocos plate to the south. –The Extinction Protocol

Now this is big news.. I see it only a matter of time before something really big happens in the Ring of Fire Zone.. Santos says to look out for a big news happening on 7th of July... Big Daddies all around with Saturn and Mars squared. I am marking my Calendar.

5.1 magnitude earthquake strikes Dominican Republic
July 7, 2012 – DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – A moderate 5.1 magnitude earthquake has struck the island nation of the Dominican Republic. The epicenter of the earthquake was 113 km (70 miles) W (260°) from San Cristóbal, San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic and just 128 km (80 miles) ESE (106°) from PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti. The earthquake had a depth of 19.9 km (12.4 miles) and may have caused some preliminary damages though reports coming in are scant in details.

New Zealand’s North Island shaken by another earthquake
July 7, 2012 – NEW ZEALAND – North Islanders were again rattled by a strong earthquake yesterday, but experts say the tremor was not related to a much larger quake four days earlier. GeoNet reported a magnitude 5.7 quake (5.0 USGS) struck 10km south of Turangi at 12.50pm. The quake was 90 km deep and, though police said there were no reports of damage, some residents said trinkets had been smashed. It came four days after a magnitude 7 earthquake, centred at a depth of 230 km and offshore from Taranaki, rattled residents from the Bay of Plenty to Canterbury, but caused little damage. Shaken people took to social media and message boards yesterday to share their experiences, some describing the shake as “huge.” A Trade Me post from Taumarunui said the quake “smashed a few photo frames” and GeoNet duty seismologist Lara Bland said a report on their website from a Turangi resident indicated some damage. However, central North Island residents spoken to by the Herald on Sunday were stoic. Raetihi woman Wiki Brown said she felt a little tremor and “that was it. The 7.0 was out of it. The whole house was shaking, I thought the mountain was blowing up.” That was because the tectonic plate was dipping under the North Island, so energy from it travelled back up the plate following the easiest path available, which was to the east. –NZ Herald

When earthquakes split mountains: 6.4 magnitude quake leaves 20 meter crack in Mt. Fuji

Opening up: In a photo taken in March 2011, a crack can be seen near a shrine at the Fifth Station of
Mount Fuji. Experts say it is unlikely to be a sign of an impending eruption or any other abnormality.
July 11, 2012 – JAPAN - A 20-meter-long crack was found halfway up Mount Fuji in Yamanashi Prefecture after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit on March 15, 2011, centered around eastern Shizuoka Prefecture, local authorities revealed Tuesday. They ruled out the possibility of an eruption. “No abnormalities have been observed regarding Mount Fuji and the mountain shows no signs of an eruption,” an official at the Meteorological Agency said, indicating the crack was caused not by volcanic activity but by the temblor. Both the width and depth of the crack were several centimeters, and it has subsequently been covered by sand and pebbles, according to the Yamanashi Prefectural Government. “Nothing has happened after more than a year (since the discovery of the crack), so Mount Fuji is probably not going to erupt,” said Shigeo Aramaki, head of the Yamanashi Institute of Environmental Sciences, who inspected the crack in June last year. –Japan Times 絶滅プロトコル
