Winter looks 'cold and snowy' with some 'crazy in-between,' Farmers' Almanac claims

    https://www.foxnews.com/us/farmers-almanac-winter-weather-forecast-cold-snow-north-midwest-great-lakes-south-dry-rain-west-coast?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A%20foxnews%2Fnational%20%28Internal%20-%20US%20Latest%20-%20Text%29

A blizzard could target the Northeast the second week of February 2021, according to the outlook

Winter is coming, apparently with a vengeance.

The Farmers’ Almanac recently released its extended forecast for the 2020-2021 season, which shows this upcoming winter could be brutally cold and snowy for much of the country.

“Based on our time-tested weather formula, the forecast for the upcoming winter looks a lot different from last year, quite divided with some very intense cold snaps and snowfall,” editor Peter Geiger said in a statement.

According to the forecast, those who live in the northern half of the country should get ready for extended bouts of cold.

Long-range forecasts from the periodical are calling for normal to below-normal temperatures in areas from the Great Lakes and Midwest stretching westward over the Northern and Central Plains and into the Rockies.

Areas around the Great Lakes are also expected to see a "fair share of snow," but above-normal snowfall is also expected farther west from the western Dakotas into northern portions of Colorado and Utah, as well as Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and central and eastern sections of Washington and Oregon.

While the Northeast saw barely any snow last winter, the Farmers' Almanac is predicting something "very different" for this upcoming season.

The big cities in the Northeast, as well as parts of the Mid-Atlantic, may see a blizzard during the second week of February, with 1 to 2 feet of snow in places from Washington, D.C. to Boston. Another big snowstorm may also target the East Coast during the final week of March, with "significant" late-season snowfall.

The forecast outlook also calls for a "significant snowfall" at the start of February for eastern Ohio and Kentucky, while the Southern Plains are also expected to see plenty of wintry precipitation during the same month.

While northern and eastern parts of the country deal with the cold and snow, the Desert Southwest is expected to have a dry and mild winter, which could worsen drought conditions.

    What is a snow squall?
Coastal areas along the West Coast could see a rainy and wet winter ahead, but areas in between have been dubbed by the periodical as the "crazy in-between," with periods of tranquil and stormy weather.

Some of the regions that could see the stormiest weather stretch from the Tennessee and lower Ohio River valleys up through New England, where storms could line up and bring wintry mix throughout the season.

The Farmers’ Almanac says it bases its long-range forecast "on a mathematical and astronomical formula developed in 1818."

The East Coast may also be targeted with a snowstorm at the end of March, according to the Farmers’ Almanac.

It's not to be confused with the rival Old Farmer's Almanac, billed as the oldest periodical in North America, which also issues seasonal weather forecasts.

If you're looking for a milder winter ahead, Old Farmer's Almanac is calling for "light winter" for most of the U.S., with warmer-than-normal temperatures for a large part of the country.

"Uncommonly chilly temperatures will be limited mostly to the western states and northeastern New England," the publication notes.

Hmm... it was 27° here last night.

9-8-20 / Colorado prepares for SNOW amid wildfires - the biggest single-day temperature drop in 150 years

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8708887/Colorado-prepares-SNOW-amid-wildfires-biggest-single-day-temperature-drop-150-years.html

Denver is set to experience the biggest temperature drop for nearly 150 years as raging wildfires turn to snow overnight in Colorado.

Snow is expected on Tuesday in Fort Collins, the Denver metro area and along the Interstate 25 corridor.

The National Weather service says Denver's temperature is set to drop up to 70 degrees within one day.

Smoke envelopes the downtown Denver skyline as winds carry the smoky air from the Cameron Peak Fire in Colorado as the Colorado city braces itself for a drastic temperature drop.

The current record for the city is 66 degrees within 24 hours, which happened in 1872.

The snow is also unusually early, with the average first snowfall in Denver happening on October 18.

The last time it snowed there in September was in 2014, but it was only a small amount.

Video shares online on Tuesday morning showed heavy snowfall, with residents shocked at the sudden change in temperature.

Unreal moments flying through the smoke plume of severe in — watch the sky turn completely orange as visibility drops to near zero.

These fires are burning near Fort Collins, though blazes are torching large areas of the West.

Snow is expected on Tuesday in Fort Collins, the Denver metro area and along the Interstate 25 corridor. The second biggest one-day temperature drop of 64 degrees happened in 1888, while Denver experienced a 61-degree drop in 2015.

On Tuesday, up to 20 inches of snow is expected to fall in some parts of Colorado, helping put out the dangerous wildfires that have burned through the state.

The National Weather Service have warned residents of broken tree limbs and power outages due to the snow.

It comes after one person died and 50 were trapped by wildfires in California as blazes ripped through Washington, Utah Colorado and Oregon during a record heatwave.

Fires destroyed homes and devastated forests and grasslands, as record high temperatures and strong winds made the task of fire fighters even more challenging.

In California, 14,100 fire fighters were battling 24 separate blazes, which have collectively destroyed 2 million acres.

An all-time temperature record for Los Angeles County of 121 degrees was set on Sunday, during a historic Labor Day weekend heat wave.

It’s a dark and eerie day in Fort Collins. No, it’s not sunset, but it’s as dark as night. These photos were taken about noon as the smoke plume from the Cameron Peak Fire rained down ash and cast an eerie, mesmerizing glow. Snow is expected tonight. It can hurry up.

The all-time county record was set at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, a suburb of LA.

Denver was cloaked in smoke from the Cameron Peak Fire, which began on August 13 and has so far burned 96,462 acres.

The state has 829 people battling to contain the fire, but evacuations have been ordered.

The Cameron Peak Fire is burning strongly through the timbers around Fort Collins.

9-8-20 / California wildfires: Record heatwave fuels fires and forces more evacuations
    https://twitter.com/i/events/1296032952766173184

At least 22 major wildfires are burning across California. Dry air and record-setting high temperatures are exacerbating the flames in many areas. On Tuesday, authorities said over 200 people have been airlifted out from areas affected by the Creek Fire.

#BobcatFire (Angeles NF) - N/E side of the fire is up to the back side of Smith Mountain & heading towards Hwy 39 @ Crystal Lake, could get there in the next couple of hours per radio traffic. Night Air Attack requested for recon.

#BearFire/#NorthComplex - Fire is now heading into the Loafer Creek area w/ a large ember cast, shown below in the camera image which is located in Kelly Ridge. Hwy 162 in that area will be impacted aswell.

#BearFire/#NorthComplex - Fire has jumped Hwy 162 & is well established on the other side in the Brush Creek area. #BearFire/#NorthComplex - Kelly Ridge area has been upgraded to a mandatory evacuation as of a few mins ago on the map.. so all yellow areas from about an hour ago that were under a warning are now mandatory evacs.

I agree with other fire reporters and behavior analysts that this event will exceed the Big Blowup Of 1910 in terms of severity and acreage. Seen a lot of fire but surreal to witness this.

The message is blunt on the feed: if people have stayed after being ordered to evacuate hours in advance, they may not be able to help them. Resources are stretched thin but they are doing what they can. Reports of more people trapped on Canyon Creek Rd.

#GlendowerFire #Medford #Oregon Fire units report fire just jumped the freeway near Far W. Ave, they are attempting to put it out before it spreads. Sounds like the fire is burning up Bear Creek Greenway at Table Rock Rd.

If you survived the Paradise, Fountaingrove or Coffey Park I caution you reading about or looking at coverage related to the fires burning around Ashland/Medford right now. PTSD inducing.

I can't even follow it right now. Pensive face Please take care. As best you can.

Horrifying footage shows the charred remains of California and Washington towns decimated by wildfires that are still spreading and have forced more than 80,000 evacuations in Oregon
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8712637/Horrifying-photos-charred-remains-towns-California-Washington.html

    - The Creek Fire, which begun in California on Friday, has burnt through 152,833 acres as of Tuesday night
    - Footage and photos show the devastation in the Shaver Lake area as 65 buildings were badly burnt
    - The fire is currently classed as 0% contained, and over 1,000 firefighters are trying to get it under control
    - In Washington state the town of Malden, home to 300 people, was 80 percent destroyed in the wildfires
    - In Oregon, 80,000 people were ordered to leave their homes as the fires blazed out of control
    - In Colorado firefighters battling a blaze near Fort Collins have been assisted by a sudden flurry of snow
    - Across California, 14,100 fire fighters were battling 25 separate blazes, which have collectively burned more than two million acres and left 172,000 people without power

Shocking new photos show the scale of devastation from California's wildfires, which have raged throughout the state and - in the case of the Creek Fire - burned homes and businesses to the ground.

In Washington state, too, the majority of a town was destroyed by wildfires - Malden, home to 300 people, was 80 percent destroyed.

And in Oregon, 80,000 people were evacuated from their homes on Tuesday as wildfires blazed out of control.

On Tuesday the first images emerged from the Creek Fire, which is still burning in northern California.

The fire started on Friday night and in three days has burnt 152,833 acres, according to Cal Fire.

They reported that 65 homes, businesses and other structures have been destroyed so far.

California Governor Gavin Newsom on Sunday night declared a state of emergency as his hard-hit state struggled to beat back the blazes.

The Labor Day weekend heat wave fueled new fires that pushed the state to set a new record for number of acres burned with more than two million as of Monday.

The previous record was set just two years ago and included the deadliest fire in state history, the Camp Fire, which ripped through the town of Paradise and killed 85 people in November 2018.

Cal Fire spokeswoman Lynne Tolmachoff said the new record was especially alarming because of how early in the year it was set.

'It's a little unnerving because September and October are historically our worst months for fires,' Tolmachoff told AP.

'It's usually hot, and the fuels really dry out. And we see more of our wind events.'

California has seen 900 wildfires since August 15, many of them started by an intense series of thousands of lightning strikes in mid-August. There have been eight fire deaths and more than 3,300 structures destroyed.

Randy Moore, regional forester for the Forest Service's Pacific Southwest Region, warned that the blazes are expected to worsen in the coming days.

'The wildfire situation throughout California is dangerous and must be taken seriously,' Moore told AP. 'Existing fires are displaying extreme fire behavior, new fire starts are likely, weather conditions are worsening, and we simply do not have enough resources to fully fight and contain every fire.'

Oregon was also struggling to contain its own wildfires, which have devastated more than 230,000 acres, according to Governor Kate Brown.

On Tuesday evening she said her state was 'in an unprecedented fire event.'

She added: 'Several significant, growing fires across the state continue to spread due to hot, dry weather & high winds.

'Oregonians' lives are at risk. Follow evacuation orders, try to reduce your smoke exposure – and take care of each other.'

On Monday evening, the Oregon Climate Office tweeted: 'Northwest Oregon is currently under an extremely critical fire weather warning.

'This is only the second time ever that the Storm Prediction Center has ever issued one for anywhere within the state of Oregon.

'The other time was August 29, 2006.'

Some family members had to evacuate - now good.

So far everyone else is good.

Thank you for asking. I just feel so sorry for the 80,000 who had to evacuate out of Eugene, Oregon and everyone else.

This weather phenomenon forms by a build-up of below average cooler water that lowers surface temperatures - experts observed the surface at 26.6 degrees Fahrenheit over the past few weeks

NOAA observed below-average temperatures stretching across the central and eastern regions of the Pacific Ocean in August, along with atmospheric circulation anomalies hanging over the surface

    WHAT IS LA NINA?

A weather pattern that occurs in the Pacific Ocean every three to seven years.

It causes abnormally strong winds that make the ocean colder than it normally is.

This small change in temperature can trigger local weather patterns all over the world, including torrential rain, plunging temperatures and cyclones.

Rain clouds normally form over warm ocean water. La Niña blows all of this warm water to the western Pacific.

This means that places like Indonesia, Australia and southern Africa can get much more rain than usual.

It typically unfolds during the end of autumn or early winter.

La Niña is here! NOAA spots conditions of the weather phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean that has a 75% chance of plaguing the US with hurricanes and droughts through the winter

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-8718735/NOAA-warns-La-Ni-75-chance-plaguing-hurricanes-drought-winter.html

NOAA sent out a warning that La Niña conditions were present in the Pacific Ocean last month. The weather phenomenon could bring stronger hurricanes and droughts to the US through winter.

Michelle L'Heureux at NOAA's Climate Prediction Center told DailyMail.com: 'The current NOAA CPC outlook for the upcoming winter is showing a tilt toward drier conditions for the southern tier of the U.S. and wetter conditions over the northern tier of the U.S.'

The government agency also notes there is a 75 percent chance of La Niña continuing through the Northern hemisphere winter until early 2021, which could bring more hurricanes and droughts to areas.
And the Central US has been enduring a period of dryness as well, coupled with above average temperatures.

Southern California is also in the midst of the region's hottest summers, according to the National Weather Service.

NOAA observed below-average temperatures stretching across the central and eastern regions of the Pacific Ocean in August, along with atmospheric circulation anomalies hanging over the surface - the sure sign La Niña has arrived.

One-third of the US was labeled in at least a moderate drought last month, with more than 93 percent of land area in Utah, Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico at some level.

The US Drought Monitor shows above average dryness is plaguing 11 US states in the west, covering nearly 87 percent of land area – and more than half of California is in drought.

Rain is in dire need for much of The Golden State as it battles the worst wildfire season on record, which has scorched more than 2.5 million acres of land since starting in August.

Hurricane Laura blew through Louisiana last month that brought 150 mile per hour winds rushing through the southern state.

And with La Niña brewing in the last three months of hurricane season, this could mean more storms are on the way that have even more power to release on land.

'Typical La Nina patterns during winter include above-average precipitation and colder-than-average temperatures along the northern tier of the U.S. and below-normal precipitation and above-average temperatures across the South,' L'Heure'ux explaind.

103 wildfires rage across 12 states in the West as San Francisco sky is stained orange and seven people are killed in California, Washington and Oregon - including a one-year-old boy
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8719661/103-wildfires-rage-western-killing-seven-people-California-Washington-Oregon.html

More than 100 wildfires are currently raging across 12 western states, scorching more than 3.4 million acres and leaving seven people dead in California, Oregon and Washington. At least five towns have been razed by blazes ripping across the drought-stricken West Coast as hundreds of thousands of people are evacuated under apocalyptic skies stained orange and red by smoke. The fast-moving fires have already claimed the lives of seven people who failed to flee before flames engulfed their communities. Pictured: Drone footage shows an orange haze blanketing San Francisco (left), children check out a charred bicycle in Phoenix, Oregon (top right), and a map of significant fires around the West (bottom right).

Across the United States wildfires have burned nearly 4.7 million acres in 2020, the highest year-to-date area since 2018, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

Most of the fires are in western states, where 17 new large blazes were reported on Wednesday, bringing the total to 90 that have burned more than 3.4 million acres - an area nearly the size of Connecticut.

Only 'smoldering ruins' remained of large parts of the town of Talent, Oregon, said local resident Sandra Spelliscy.

'There are numerous neighborhoods where there are no structures left standing... dozens of homes [gone] and literally nothing except the skeletons of a chimney or an appliance,' she said.

Firefighters retreated from uncontrollable blazes in Oregon as officials gave residents 'go now' orders to evacuate, meaning they had only minutes to leave their homes.

'It was like driving through hell,' Jody Evans told local television station NewsChannel21 after a midnight evacuation from Detroit, about 50 miles west of Salem.

In Okanogan County, Washington, the Hyland family got trapped by the Cold Springs Fire as they evacuated their property near Omak on Sunday night.

The family's scorched truck was found abandoned on the side of a road on Tuesday afternoon, before search and rescue teams discovered dad Jake and mom Jamie, who is pregnant, gravely injured on the banks of the Columbia River. Their one-year-old son Uri was already dead.

Jamie, 26, suffered burns covering 40 to 50 percent of her body and underwent surgery on her arms, a relative wrote in on a GoFundMe page.

Jake, 31, was burned on 25 percent of his body and was preparing for surgery on his arms as well.

To the south in Butte County, California, Sheriff Kory Honea confirmed that three people have died in the Bear Fire. Their identities have not yet been released.

The remains of three victims were found in two separate locations of the same fire, Honea said, bringing the total death toll from this summer's devastating spate of California wildfires to at least 11.

Hornea said at least 12 people remain missing in Butte County as the Bear Fire rages on.

Leanna Mikesler, from Clovis, California, said she had been forced to evacuate her home to escape wildfires before, but it was '10 times harder' during the coronavirus pandemic.

'They call... the evacuation. And then you go from there to see if your house has been burned down,' she said.

Over a century of efforts by federal and state agencies to suppress naturally occurring blazes have left forests replete with dry timber and brush that provides fuel for large wildfires.

Home construction has encroached on some forests in recent decades, and owners are watching their houses burn as firefighters are unable to save property.

Half-dozen fire experts who spoke to AP agreed that more extreme fire behavior in recent years has been driven by drought and warming temperatures they attribute to climate change. Among the most concerning developments is that fast-moving wildfires leave less time for warnings or evacuations.

Recently 'we have seen multiple fires expand by tens of thousands of acres in a matter of hours, and 30 years or more ago that just wasn't fire behavior that we saw,' said Jacob Bendix, a professor of geography and the environment at Syracuse University who studies wildfires.

Hotter temperatures, longer fire seasons and an estimated 140 million dead trees from a five-year drought mean that 'fires in California are moving faster and growing larger', said University of Utah fire expert Philip Dennison.

Mike Flannigan, who directs the Western Partnership for Wildland Fire Science at Canada's University of Alberta, remembers the first report of a fire-created thunderstorm in 1986.

'They were rare events, and now they've become commonplace,' he said. 'It's because these fires are higher intensity.'

Thanks for the photos Oxy. Nice job.

    More updates on the fires:

    - Over 10% of the entire population of Oregon forced to evacuate, 23 known killed....

    - Fires have
consumed an area equal to the size of New Jersey.
    - 'War zone': Deadly wildfires rage in Western states: At least 23 dead, hundreds of thousands evacuated

OROVILLE, Calif. – Wildfires raced through more than a dozen Western states Thursday, incinerating homes, forcing hundreds of thousands of evacuations, and burning a swath of land almost the size of New Jersey.

At least 23 people have died and hundreds of homes have been destroyed by more than 100 major fires that have consumed nearly 7,000 square miles. Authorities in Oregon say more than 500,000 people statewide have been forced to evacuate because of wildfires - over 10% of the state’s 4.2 million population.

"Unprecedented weather conditions have created emergency situations near wildfires throughout California, Oregon, Washington and other states," the National Fire Information Center warned. "Almost half of the large fires reported today have evacuation orders in place."

Nineteen deaths have been reported in California, three in Oregon and one in Washington state. In Northern California's Butte County, Sheriff Kory Honea said at least 10 people have died, including seven more added to the death toll Thursday. Dozens are missing and hundreds of homes were feared destroyed by a series of blazes 125 miles northeast of San Francisco called the North Complex fires.

Several people have been critically burned and thousands more homes were threatened. At least 20,000 people were under evacuation orders or warnings in Plumas, Yuba and Butte counties.

John Sykes, a 50-year resident, fled with his car and some clothes. He watched the town of Berry Creek burn from about a mile away.

“The school is gone, the fire department’s gone, the bar’s gone, the laundromat’s gone, the general store’s gone,” Sykes told the Sacramento Bee. “I’ll never go back. ... I never want to see California again.”

The fire also threatened Paradise, a town devastated in 2018 by the deadliest inferno in state history, the Camp Fire. More than 80 residents died and almost 20,000 buildings were destroyed in that blaze.

California ablaze: Striking satellite imagery shows how the fires are unfolding

In the Sierra National Forest, authorities say it will likely be at least a week, and possibly a month, before the Creek Fire is controlled sufficiently to permit residents to return. The fire has displaced tens of thousands of Californians, and the Red Cross was helping evacuees find hotel rooms because group shelters are prohibited during the coronavirus outbreak.

Fire officials have not yet released detailed maps of the fire damage but say at least 60 homes and 278 commercial-residential structures were destroyed. Rocky Alec, 22, and Kristen Kipp, 21, had to abandon their trailer home near Mammoth.

"You couldn’t really see anything. There was smoke everywhere. We were in too much smoke to see flames," Alec said. “At first we were like it was just another fire. Then it got real.”

In Southern California, fires burned in Los Angeles, San Bernardino and San Diego counties. But severe Santa Ana winds forecast for the area were weaker than predicted.

The El Dorado Fire, which has burned about 20 square miles in San Bernardino County, was listed as 23% contained Thursday. Almost 1,000 firefighters were "actively engaged in structure protection and successfully defended multiple structures," Cal Fire said.

Homes have been lost, however, and damage-assessment teams were working to confirm the number of homes and businesses and their locations. Fire officials said the blaze was sparked by a pyrotechnic device used during a "gender reveal" event Saturday.

Winds may die down, but smoke and fire threat will persist

The strong, gusty winds over the West weakened Thursday and should continue to do so over the weekend, the National Weather Service said.

“We’re encouraged that the wind activity appears to be dying down,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said. “The rest of the week looks a little more favorable.”

That is good news for a state where 14,000 firefighters remain on the line of 29 major wildfires. The last few weeks have been grueling, as has much of a year during which California has already endured six of the 20 largest wildfires in its history, including three of the top four.

Since January, wildfires have burned almost 5,000 square miles in California, easily a record for the state. There have been 12 fatalities, and over 3,900 structures have been destroyed.

At least seven weeks remain in the prime fire season, and low humidity combined with warmer temperatures forecast in coming days will be enough for elevated fire concerns to remain, according to the Weather Service.

In addition, a stagnant air mass will likely keep areas of smoke in place across the Northwest, Great Basin, California and other areas across the West dealing with the wildfires, resulting in continued poor air quality, AccuWeather said.

Some more substantial relief may be on the way for the Northwest by early next week as a storm system approaches the coast, potentially bringing some welcome rainfall, according to AccuWeather.

'We could hear the trees exploding': At least 7 dead as wildfires rage across West

This is what someone had to say about the Governor of Oregon:

10% of Oregon's entire population are running for their lives.

"I live in the City of Portland OREGON near the Columbia River - SO MUCH SMOKE & ASH in the AIR - Eyes watering, sneezing, & almost choking!

I took my high lumen flashlight outside tonight and shined across and up in the air, large particles of ash flying everywhere, smoke is thick and I am hundreds of miles from the forest fires which our subversive-fifth-columnist MTF TR4NNY GOVERNOR 'KATE' BROWN calls 'ONCE IN A GENERATION'...

THIS IS BLATANT ARSON DELIBERATELY SET BY antifa/blm/dnc/communist TERRORISTS along with DEEP STATE DEW's.

THE demonically possessed enemies are deliberately genociding wildlife, farmland, livelihoods, property, endangering lives, forced low oxygen, and poisoning all those affected.

I PRAY THAT OUR ENEMIES DIE A SLOW AGONIZING DEATH AND MAY THEY BURN IN HELL FOREVER AND EVER WITH GNASH OF TEETH WHERE THE WORM DIETH NOT, WHERE THEY BE TORTURED FOR ALL ETERNITY
    .
    "

Oregon and Washington state also have struggled with historic blazes, and wind-driven fires were also burning in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

In Oregon, a series of fires killed three people and forced residents to flee flames, smoke and destruction. Gov. Kate Brown said hundreds of residences have been destroyed. She said emergency responders were "inundated" and urged residents not to call 911 to report smoke or ash clouds. Evacuees poured into the state fairgrounds in the capital city of Salem, many bringing their animals.

Brown said more than 900,000 acres have burned across the state in the last several days – nearly double the amount of scorched terrain in a typical year. More than 80,000 people have had to flee their homes, and the count may increase, she said.
“We have never seen this amount of uncontained fire across the state,” Brown said.

The Oregon Office of Emergency Management said 39 wildfires were burning in the state by Thursday morning, a number that shocked officials.

Jonathan Weir defied evacuation orders as flames 30 feet high shot from the trees in Phoenix, a town of 4,000 residents near the California border. His home was destroyed.

“There were flames across the street from me, flames to the right of me, flames to the left of me. I just watched everything burn,” Weir said.

'Looked like a war zone' along Interstate 5

Fires were burning in seven Oregon counties, and the Almeda Drive Fire in southern Oregon prompted evacuation orders in much of Medford, a city of about 80,000 residents.

Truck driver Troy Wood said he was driving north on the I-5 and saw a path of destruction as he approached Ashland, a few miles southeast of Medford.

"It looked like a ... war zone,” Wood said. “You could see burned out gas stations and buildings on fire.”

In Washington state, Gov. Jay Inslee toured the devastated farm town of Malden, about 35 miles south of Spokane, and said wildfires have charred nearly 937 square miles of terrain.

“We’ve had this trauma all over Washington,” Inslee said, according to KHQ-TV. “But this is the place where the whole heart of the town was torn out.”

Inslee placed the blame for the rash of fires squarely on climate change. He promised "steps to defeat" the impact of global warming.

"We are not going to surrender the future of this state to climate change," he said. "We are stronger, smarter and more resilient than that. And I’ll be thinking of these fires and the communities they're impacting when we take our next steps to defeat climate change."

Hurricane Sally may bring 'historic flooding' to Gulf Coast as storm crawls toward landfall
Widespread flash flooding, with 10 to 20 inches of rain, is expected from the central Gulf Coast to the Florida Panhandle

Wildlife has been displaced by the hurricane as residents report sightings of massive alligators in their yards
Alligators were seen lurking in floodwaters in Alabama after Hurricane Sally dumped more than four months of rain in four hours after it lumbered ashore on Wednesday with 105mph winds and left at least one person dead.

The death happened in Orange Beach, Alabama, according to Mayor Tony Kennon, who also said that one person was missing. Kennon said he couldn't immediately release details.

At least 50 people were rescued from flooded homes and taken to shelters, Kennon said. 'We got a few people that we just haven’t been able to get to because the water is so high,' the mayor added. 'But they are safe in their homes. As soon as the water recedes, we will rescue them.'

Moving at just 3mph, the storm made landfall at 4.45am close to Gulf Shores, Alabama, about 30 miles from Pensacola, Florida. It accelerated to a light jog as it battered the Pensacola and Mobile, Alabama, metropolitan areas encompassing nearly 1 million people.

The hurricane cast boats onto land or sank them at the dock, flattened palm trees, peeled away roofs, blew down signs and knocked out power to more than 540,000 homes and businesses.

The storm also caused the displacement of animals, with 10 to 12ft alligators reported swimming through residential areas in Orange Beach.

Terrifying footage shows one alligator swimming outside the window of Tina Bennett's home on Old Plash Island Road, Gulf Shores, on Wednesday. In the video, the huge alligator crawls through the waters flooding the front yard of a home.

Birds are dropping dead in New Mexico, potentially in the 'hundreds of thousands'
Scientists are investigating why so many birds are dying and are asking the public for help.

Wildlife experts in New Mexico say birds in the region are dropping dead in alarming numbers, potentially in the "hundreds of thousands."

“It appears to be an unprecedented and a very large number,” Martha Desmond, a professor at New Mexico State University’s department of fish, wildlife, and conservation ecology, told NBC’s Albuquerque affiliate KOB.

New Mexico residents have reported coming upon dead birds on hiking trails, missile ranges, and in other locations.

In a video posted by Las Cruces Sun News, journalist Austin Fisher shows a cluster of dead birds he discovered while on a hike on Sept. 13 in the state’s northern Rio Arriba County.

“I have no idea,” Fisher says in the video, as he pans the camera to reveal what appears to be dozens of birds lying dead on the ground.

Desmond said it is difficult to say how many birds are dying, but that there have been reports across the state. “I can say it would easily be in the hundreds of thousands of birds."

Multiple agencies are investigating the occurrences, including the Bureau of Land Management and the White Sands Missile Range, a military testing area.

“On the missile range we might in a week find, get a report of, less than half a dozen birds,” Trish Butler, a biologist at the range, told KOB. “This last week we've had a couple hundred, so that really got our attention.”

Desmond also told KOB the deaths could be related to the wildfires in the West. “There may have been some damage to these birds in their lungs. It may have pushed them out early when they weren't ready to migrate.”

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife said on Twitter that “not much is known about the impacts of smoke and wildfires on birds.”

Scientists are asking the public to report sightings of dead birds to an online database, and that people safely collect the dead birds so that researchers can study them more closely.

NOAA says that smoke from the fires moved east this week and meteorologists expect that the effects will be even worse throughout the week, until dissipating on Friday due to an incoming cold front. Recall, eerie, dark orange clouds enveloped San Francisco and the Bay Area last week as a result of nearby wildfire smoke entering the atmosphere. Stunning photos were posted by SF Gate last Wednesday showing what looks like a Martian sky, which was yellow on Tuesday, but darkened in color overnight to orange as a result of smoke being pushed inland off the Pacific Ocean.

According to the, at 10:45 AM local time, "it looked as if it were dawn".

UCLA climate scientist Daniel Swain said on Twitter: "Extremely dense & tall smoke plumes from numerous large wildfires, some of which have been generating nocturnal pyrocumulunimbus clouds ('fire thunderstorms), are almost completely blocking out the sun across some portions of Northern California this morning."

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is closely monitoring "powerful" Hurricane Teddy as it continues to churn in the Atlantic Ocean and could make landfall in Canada early next week.

As of 0500 ET Friday, Teddy is generating 130 mph winds (Category 4) while moving northwest at 12 mph and located about 900 miles southeast of Bermuda. The system is expected to make landfall near Nova Scotia, Canada, as a Category 2, on Tuesday/Wednesday.

Day said some weather models have Teddy taking a northwest turn before heading for Nova Scotia, indicating landfall could be between Yarmouth and Halifax. As Teddy churns in the Atlantic on Friday, the remnants of Hurricane Sally are moving offshore from the Southeastern/ Mid-Atlantic region. In another NHC update, Tropical Depression 22 could strengthen into a hurricane over the weekend with models forecasting a South Texas strike.

“Red points in the west note areas that are significantly higher in temperature than the areas around it and are indicative of fires,” NASA explained in the statement, which was released Sept. 16.

The remarkable image captured four hurricanes and tropical storms in both the East and the West.

“On the left hand side is Karina which is moving away from the Baja California area,” NASA said. “Hurricane Sally, seen in the middle of the image, made landfall overnight on the Gulf Coast bringing catastrophic flooding in its wake.”

Hurricane Paulette can also be seen off the East Coast, near Bermuda, while Hurricane Teddy is in the lower right-hand corner of the image, east of the Leeward Islands.

Launched on May 4, 2002, the Aqua satellite has six Earth-observing instruments on board and was previously known as EOS PM.

Texas braces for ANOTHER hurricane as Tropical Storm Beta gains strength in the Gulf of Mexico with 60mph winds and is expected to make landfall early next week
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8751017/Texas-braces-hurricane-Tropical-Storm-Beta-gains-strength-Gulf-Mexico.html

A hurricane watch has been issued for parts of Texas as Tropical Storm Beta gains strength in the Gulf of Mexico and is predicted to hit the coast by early next week. The National Hurricane Center warned of 'an increasing risk of heavy rainfall and flooding' along the coast from Sunday through at least the middle of next week as the slow-moving storm approaches the state. As of Saturday morning, Beta was 290 miles east of the mouth of the Rio Grande with maximum sustained winds at 60mph, the NHC said in an advisory.

Earth Changes from September 2017 - to present / Biblical Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Floods, Volcanic Activity, Fires, Snow Ice Storms - Page 19 33377898-8751017-image-a-2_1600538477233

Alpha was a post-tropical cyclone Friday night after bringing rain to Portugal.

Tropical Storm Wilfred remained at sea but was 830 miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands with maximum sustained winds at 40 mph (65 kph).

Meanwhile, Hurricane Teddy remained a powerful hurricane late Friday, with maximum sustained winds at 130mph.

Teddy was centered 730 miles southeast of Bermuda less than a week after Hurricane Paulette made landfall in the wealthy British territory.

Large swells from Teddy were forecast to impact the Lesser Antilles, the Greater Antilles and the Bahamas, and by Saturday were to spread to Bermuda and the U.S. East Coast.

Parts of the Alabama coast and Florida Panhandle were still reeling from the effects of Hurricane Sally, which roared ashore on Wednesday.

At least two deaths were blamed on the system, and hundreds of thousands of people were still without power late Friday.

Fire crews across the West battled dozens of major blazes, as one wildfire traveling from mountains to the desert northeast of Los Angeles threatened more than 1,000 homes on Tuesday.

The Bobcat Fire, which started on Sept. 6, continued to threaten the Mojave Desert town of Pearblossom. The fire was fueled by vegetation along with erratic winds last weekend.

LOS ANGELES--The firefighter who died last week battling the El Dorado fire that was started by a gender-reveal party in Southern California was identified on Monday as a squad boss from a hotshot crew.

California National Parks including Yosemite are closed for the weekend due to smoke.
