Narrow, Heavy Snow Band to Target New York City Area
    Kristina Pydynowski
    By Kristina Pydynowski, Senior Meteorologist
    Jan 6, 2011; 5:21 AM ET

A band of heavy snow Friday into Friday night will impact a relatively small area of the Northeast, but this zone includes the New York City area.

The intense band of snow will evolve from an Alberta Clipper that is responsible for the generally light snow showers currently spreading over the Midwest and a broad area of light, but slippery snow coming elsewhere in the Northeast.

Steadier snow will begin to develop across eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and central New York Friday morning. Residents should prepare for slick commute to work in Wilmington, Del.; Philadelphia, Pa.; and Binghamton, N.Y.

Later Friday, the snow will organize into an extremely intense and narrow band that AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist Matt Rinde states will only be "50 to 100 miles wide."

Just a note Carol. The Japan thing is way up in the mountains where they normally get a lot of snow. Similar to Lake Tahoe in the US.

    Still, the rivers will flood.

Look at what is going on with Mýrdalsjökull

    The earthquakes in Eyjafjallajökull volcano
Posted on January 6, 2011 by Jón Frímann
The night of the 6th of January 2011 had few earthquakes in the Eyjafjallajökull volcano. This minor earthquake activity has been reported by the Icelandic media this morning. The news on this is not a long one. But confirms that some of the earthquakes in Eyjafjallajökull volcano are real (but might be wrongly located by the automatic SIL system). In the same news it is claimed that icelandic geologist are not concerned about this minor earthquake activity in Eyjafjallajökli volcano. But none of the earthquakes that did happen tonight (on the 6th of January 2011) did get over the size of ML2.0.

The news on the earthquake activity in Eyjafjallajökli volcano.

New SIL seismometers around Eyjafjallajökull volcano and Mýrdalsjökull (Katla)
Posted on January 5, 2011 by Jón Frímann
The seismometers that British Geological Survey did pay for to be installed around Eyjafjallajökull volcano and Mýrdalsjökull (Katla volcano) have been integrated into the Icelandic Met Office SIL Seismometer Network. They have at least been marked into the Icelandic Met Office earthquake web page.

The new stations are marked with a triangles on the map. The older SIL stations can be found at Icelandic Met Office tremor web page. Currently the new SIL stations are not on Icelandic Met Office Tremor web page yet.

What this means for earthquake recording in this area is that Icelandic Met Office is now able to detect smaller earthquakes. Location of earthquakes is also going to improve a great deal, so automatic location of earthquakes is going to improve a great deal in this area. This means that more earthquakes are going to be visible on Icelandic Met Office maps then before.

The only positive thing is that it will still make animal feed. I know this because I grow wheat! LOL

Now if it is completely underwater, it will only be feed for earthworms.

"Mystery of mass animal death epidemic deepens after 8,000 turtle doves fall dead in Italy with strange blue stain on their beaks "

I have a theory . The birds breathing frequency as a rule of thumb is hundreds of times a minute. So let's assume that a flock flies into a pocket of air just treated by a chemtrail , I assume the Oxygen content has dropped and suddenly for a few seconds the birds find it impossible to breath and as a consequence they drop from the sky .
What this theory do not explain is why this phenomenon has a high frequency now . But it would only take an area of obout 30-40 meters with very low oxygen to kill a large flock passing through .

    THE Bird Kill Alert Map
I'm sure you've all seen the google bird kill map, it's all over the internet and some news networks sites are actually posting it. Here is a link to a web site that puts that map to shame.

It's from an emergency disaster information site in Budapest. It has icons on the map for every conceivable disaster with pop ups like google and current issues have a red pulsing signal around them. Below the map is a list of items with links to information and updates as well as photos/ video.
It covers everything from biohazards to near earth objects, calling it one stop shopping for current info is an understatement.

Nothing unusual but as we seem we may be entering more deeply into the pole reversal phase it 's good to keep an eye on the auroras .
In case of actually pole reversal they should show up at the equator.

    AURORA WATCH :

As expected, a solar wind stream hit Earth's magnetic field during the early hours of Jan. 7th. The impact sparked a G1-class (Kp=5) geomagnetic storm and bright auroras around the Arctic Circle. "It was just amazing," says Kjetil Skogli, who sends this picture from Tromsø, Norway:

"The display began with a faint band in the north and quickly developed into several spectacular waves with extreme high speed rays," he says.

The lights were so intense, they could be seen as far away as Northern Ireland. "The glow was faint, but definitely there," reports Martin McKenna of Maghera, Co. Derry.

High latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras as the solar wind continues to blow.

Flights Canceled, Roads Icy as Storm Hits South
    By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Published: January 9, 2011
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A blast of winter weather pushed across the South on Sunday, coating bridges and roads with snow, sleet and freezing rain and causing hundreds of flight cancelations.

The governors of Louisiana, Alabama and Georgia issued emergency declarations. Alabama Gov. Bob Riley said workers had readied snow and salt trucks to help clear icy roads, and he asked all residents to stay home Sunday night and Monday unless it is imperative that they have to travel.

Mississippi officials warned motorists that ice was accumulating on roads and bridges in many counties, creating hazardous driving conditions.

The National Weather Service posted winter storm warnings from east Texas to the Carolinas.

Daniel Lamb, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson, Miss., said heavy snow had fallen Sunday afternoon from Arkansas to north Mississippi. Other areas of the South saw freezing rain and sleet.

Forecasters expected the most extreme conditions in Mississippi and northern Louisiana overnight with the possibility of heavy ice accumulation in places, including in the Atlanta metro area.

"And since it's going to be pretty cold over the next few days, we could see whatever accumulates sticking around for a few days," Lamb said.

Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas were expecting icy weather overnight.

The anticipated storm forced Georgia officials to move Monday's inauguration of newly elected Gov. Nathan Deal from the state Capitol steps inside to the shelter of the House chamber. The inaugural gala was scrapped to keep supporters off treacherous roads.

Hundreds of flights were canceled at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Steady sleet was falling in counties south of the city.

Delta Air Lines canceled 330 flights starting about 8 p.m. Sunday and another 1,400 flights Monday. AirTran Airways canceled 14 flights for Sunday and another 270 for Monday, spokesman Christopher White said.

Both airlines are allowing passengers whose flights are canceled to change them without fees.

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport spokesman David Magana said 200 flights, or about a quarter of the schedule, were canceled in anticipation of the weather.

In eastern Tennessee, the Weather Service said 4 to 6 inches of snow could fall by Sunday evening, with the heaviest hitting early Monday.

Louisiana authorities closed portions of Interstate 220 and many churches from Louisiana to Alabama canceled Sunday night services.

The worship leader at one prepared to use a web camera to broadcast an abbreviated worship service over the Internet from his home since members couldn't make it to church.

"I'll just do one or two acoustic songs, something like that, just to keep it going until next week," said Ben Nelson of Helena United Methodist Church, located in suburban Birmingham.

Officials closed a bridge over the Black Warrior River in Tuscaloosa until workers could spread sand across a sheet of ice that formed quickly on the roadway. Numerous schools called off classes for Monday in Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia.

Flash floods hit Australia's third largest city
    Video
    Australia flood damage spreads
    11:28am EST
    By Michael Perry
    SYDNEY | Sun Jan 9, 2011 7:43pm EST

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Residents of low-lying parts of Australia's third largest city, Brisbane, sandbagged their homes against rising waters Monday as torrential rain exacerbated record floods that have paralyzed the coal industry in the northeast and now threaten tourism.

Weather officials issued a severe weather alert, warning of flash flooding and worsening river floods in Queensland state's heavily populated southeast and the center of the country's lucrative Gold Coast tourist strip.

"People need to think about how to get out and if you don't need to travel, stay off the roads," said Police Chief Superintendent Alistair Dawson.

The worst floods in 50 years, affecting an area the size of France and Germany combined, began last month and have severely cut Queensland's $20 billion coking coal export industry, starving Asian steel mills of coal and pushing up world prices.

Coal stocks were running low at the key coal port of Dalrymple Bay, but it was receiving enough to keep loading ships, while the port of Gladstone said it may be days to weeks before it starts getting coal supplies back to normal.

More than 200,000 people and more than 10,700 properties have been affected in the Christmas-New Year floods, which have killed four people. The floods have caused an estimated $5 billion in damages.

The weather bureau forecast monsoonal rains would continue for the rest of the week, giving flooded towns little respite as some residents clean-up and others build levees to stop floodwaters.

The fresh heavy rains were causing flash flooding, quickly cutting off some small towns and flooding homes and businesses.

"The State Emergency Service advises that people in the affected area should avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters, take care on the roads, especially in heavy downpours and avoid swimming in swollen rivers and creeks," said the Bureau of Meteorology's severe weather warning.

A major concern now is the ground is so waterlogged the heavy rains are unable to be absorbed and full rivers, creeks and man-made watercourses are bursting their banks.

About 116,000 megaliters of water a day was being released from Brisbane's Wivenhoe Dam, which may cause road closures, said local authorities. The heavy rains had also forced authorities to release water from other near-full dams around Brisbane and the Gold Coast, further exacerbating the floods.

Almost 3,000 homes in Queensland's southeast were left without power overnight as a result of flooding, which has closed the Brisbane Valley Highway.

Brisbane City Council Monday started issuing sandbags to residents in low-lying parts of the city.
