Phenomenon Strike Fear in Cebu Philippines

May 7 2010 Cebu City, Philippines: A strange solar phenomenon occurred
at around 11:00 AM visible in Cebu City and neighboring cities causing
end times speculations among a predominantly Catholic population. News
of the strange sky formation spread instantly through text messaging.
Thousands of office workers went out to the streets this morning and saw
a bizarre sight in the sky. Witnesses say that a halo composed of
rainbow colors formed around the sun but it got darker towards the
center making the sun an eerie spectacle as if it was about to die.

Independent witnesses claim the sun appeared to be on the verge of
exploding or burning out, was redish in the center. Others say it was
definitely apocalyptic.

The scientific term for such an
occurence is sundog and this usually happens in the northern hemisphere.
Howerver, In Asia this is rare and the elderly believe that such a
phenomenon is a bad omen that usually shows up just before famine and
war comes. They said this is based on their experience. Allegedly,
World War II was preceded by such an occurence a few months earlier
before the war erupted.

It is also rumored that Duke Puntalangit,
a self acclaimed Marian visionary resides in Cebu and this phenomenon
might stregnthen his allegations that World War III will erupt this
year. Puntalangit made several prophecies including one that says the
Fatima chastisement will begin this year. In another prophecy he warns
the Pope Mass in Fatima on May 13 2010 will be preceded, within a few
hours, by two nuclear explosions in New York.

The strange solar
phenomenon lasted until around 1:00 pm May 7 2010.

What causes a sinkhole?

Sinkholes are all about water.

Water dissolved minerals in the rock, leaving residue and open spaces within the rock. (This is called "weathering".)
Water washes away the soil and residue from the voids in the rock.
Lowering of groundwater levels can cause a loss of support for the soft material in the rock spaces that can lead to collapse.
Changing groundwater gradients (due to removing or introducing water to the system) can cause loose material to flush out quicker from the voids and the surface to collapse in response.
Any change to the hydrologic system (putting more water in or taking it out) causes the system to become at least temporarily unstable and can lead to sinkholes.
Sinkholes can result from seasonal changes in the groundwater table, freeze and thaw of the ground, and extremes in precipitation (drought vs heavy rain).
Karst landscapes develop naturally through the weathering process so a sinkhole can be considered a natural occurence. But, human influence causes sinkholes to occur where they might not naturally have happened. Or, they may occur sooner or more abruptly than under natural conditions.

Typical activities that can lead to sinkholes are:

Decline of water levels - drought, groundwater pumping (wells, quarries, mines)
Disturbance of the soil - digging through soil layers, soil removal, drilling
Point-source of water - leaking water/sewer pipes, injection of water
Concentration of water flow - stormwater drains, swales, etc.
Water impoundments - basins, ponds, dams
Heavy loads on the surface - structures, equipment
Vibration - traffic, blasting
Sometimes several factors combine to cause a sinkhole. A sinkhole left open to take more water may continue to grow and can contribute to the appearance of more sinkholes nearby.

A sinkhole is not a hole in the rock

A common misunderstanding is to think that a sinkhole is the hole in the rock. Actually, the sinkhole is what we see on the ground surface because of the hole in the rock below. The space in the rock (known as a void, solution cavity or cave) takes hundreds or thousands of years to form. Then, soil from above can move into the void in rock. If the soil is sticky, a void can form within the soil. As more soil washes down (over years or maybe just days), the void space moves toward the surface until it can't hold together anymore. When it collapses (or subsides), you see the sinkhole on the surface. Often, you can only see soil in the hole and not the actual hole in the rock itself because the rock is too far below.

Currently I'm in northeastern Oregon and they have been spraying here
almost daily for the past 12 years. Personally, I don't see it
stoping until the grid comes down from a CME.

I like the title of this thread...kinda reminds me of the updates PC used to provide titled; " State of the Planet" not sure if got it right, but you guys know what i'm talking about. Given the multitude of information from all kinds of sources, one individual would never be able to access all. With all of us contributing and sharing, I think this would be a suitable place to get up to date with all that's happening around us.

Chinese farmer declares war on property developers with homemade wheelbarrow cannon



A Chinese farmer is fighting off property developers who want his land, firing rockets from a homemade cannon made out of a wheelbarrow and pipes, state media said on Tuesday.

Yang Youde, who lives on the outskirts of the bustling city of Wuhan, in central Hubei province, said he had fended off two eviction attempts with his improvised weapon, which uses ammunition made from locally sold fireworks.

"I shot only over their heads to frighten them," he told the China Daily of his attacks on demolition workers sent to move him off his land. "I didn't want to cause any injuries."

His approach is more aggressive than most, but Mr Yang's problem is a common one.

Anger over property confiscation is one of the leading causes of unrest in China, with many people forced to give up homes and land to make way for anything from roads to luxury villas.

Mr Yang said the local government had offered him 130,000 yuan (£13,000) for his fields, on which they want to erect "department buildings". He said the land is worth five times that amount.

Construction ditches have already been dug across the land of less obstinate neighbours.

A first eviction team attacked Mr Yang in February after his rockets ran out, but local police came to his rescue. In May he held off 100 people by firing from a makeshift watchtower.

The government is planning to reform property confiscation rules, but rights groups say the changes do not go far enough to address the potentially destabilising issue.

DON'T CALL THE GUATEMALA SINKHOLE A SINKHOLE

The giant sinkhole that opened beneath downtown Guatemala City over the weekend is all the rage right now. There's just one problem: it isn't a sinkhole.

"Sure, it looks a lot like a sinkhole," geologist Sam Bonis told Discovery News from his home in Guatemala. "And a whale looks a lot like a fish, but calling it one would be very misleading."

Instead, Bonis prefers the term "piping feature" -- a decidedly less sexy label for the 100-foot deep, 66-foot wide circular chasm. But it's an important distinction, he maintains, because "sinkholes" refer to areas where bedrock is solid but has been eaten away by groundwater, forming a geological Swiss cheese whose contours are nearly impossible to predict.

The situation beneath the country's capital is far different, and more dangerous.

The lion's share of the city is built on pumice fill -- ash flows made up of loose, gravel-like particles deposited during ancient volcanic eruptions. In places, the debris is piled over 600 feet thick, filling up what would otherwise be a v-shaped valley of faulted bedrock. For those peering into the deep dark depths wondering what might be at the bottom, it's either more pumice fill or bedrock. Mixed with a healthy dose of wreckage from the swallowed-up clothing factory.

In 2007, a similar hole opened after a sewage pipe broke pipe just a few blocks from this weekend's disaster. Bonis was part of a team of geologists and engineers brought in to investigate and advise officials on what went wrong.

"Our recommendation was that this could happen again," he recalled. "When you have water flowing from storm water runoff, a sewage pipe, or any kind of strong flow, it eats away at the loose material. We don't know how long it has to go on before it collapses. But once it starts collapsing, God help us."

The Guatemala City metro area is home to nearly 3 million people. Not all of them live on the fill -- Bonis estimates around 1-1.5 million, with the rest perched on the valley walls -- but by mislabeling the feature a sinkhole, it distracts from a dangerous situation that could be mitigated, if not neutralized, by better handling of the city's runoff and waste water.

"I'd hate to have to be in the government right now," Bonis, who worked for the Guatemalan government's Instituto Geografico Nacional for sixteen years, said. "There is an excellent potential for this to happen again. It could happen almost anywhere in the city."

Dead baby whale washes ashore in NY!



JONES BEACH, NY -- A dead baby humpback whale washed up on Jones Beach, about two miles east of the Jones Beach Water Tower.


The whale, at least 25 feet long, was spotted just after 9am Thursday.

Rescue workers from the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation were en route to examine the

whale.

They will perform a necropsy to determine what killed the whale. There were no apparent signs of distress or injury.

The whale was spotted on a section of beach known as High Hill. It is two miles east of the Jones Beach Water

Tower, east of Field 6 and west of Tobay Beach.

The beaching is close to where a male dolphin washed ashore in West Gilgo Beach last Thursday. That dolphin died less than a day later.

In April, an ill baby humpback whale washed ashore in East Hampton. Several attempts to euthanize that whale failed before authorities were able to finally put it down.

Soon there will be many more dead animals washing ashore...most people must be hit upside the head to see...

Within 1 week we are seeing record flash flooding in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Singapore, France, and Poland. Comes to mind. They are called flash floods for a reason, but these are record or near record torrential rains as well all occurring in a small window of time.

I am in the Pyrenees and it has not stopped raining for the past 2 days; The flash floods have been going on for the past 3 days. They happen every 2 years now. I have been talking to the old boys and girls here. who none say they remember a year like we have just had. Snowed so musch over winter and summer has not bothered to show. In my village last week we had such a down pour that there was waves in mid air as the wind wiped the rain of the roof of the house next door. Very strnge year. But then again I am a young Englishman in France and don't have the depth of memory to confirm the old dears and gents. Lovely as they are memory can fade or change over time?????
