(Above) Submarine volcanism is now sublimating the outer parameters of the Antarctica Ice sheet which will make the region more vulnerable to fracturing and collapse as planetary tremors continue to tear at the stability of the ice cap and rivet tectonic plates across the globe. Omen? Scientists dismayed as millions of aquatic animals swarm Antarctica

Posted on April 28, 2011 by The Extinction Protocol
April 28, 2011 – ANTARCTICA – Scientists are dismayed by the record number of whales swarming Antarctica. The sightings, made in waters still largely ice-free deep into austral autumn, suggest the previously little-studied bays are important late-season foraging grounds for the endangered whales. But they also highlight how rapid climate change is affecting the region. The Duke University-led team tracked the super-aggregation of krill and whales during a six-week expedition to Wilhelmina Bay and surrounding waters in May 2009. They published their findings today (April 27) in the online science journal PLoS ONE. “Such an incredibly dense aggregation of whales and krill has never been seen before in this area at this time of year,” says Duke marine biologist Douglas Nowacek. Most studies have focused on whale foraging habitats located in waters farther offshore in austral summer. Nowacek and his colleagues observed 306 humpback whales – or about 5.1 whales per square kilometer, the highest density ever recorded – in Wilhelmina Bay. They measured the krill biomass at about 2 million tons. Small, floating fragments of brash ice covered less than 10 percent of the bay. The team returned in May 2010 and recorded similar numbers. Smaller but still higher-than-normal counts were also reported in neighboring Andvord Bay. Advancing winter sea ice used to cover much of the peninsula’s bays and fjords by May, protecting krill and forcing humpback whales to migrate elsewhere to find food, Nowacek says. But rapid climate change in the area over the last 50 years has significantly reduced the extent, and delayed the annual arrival, of the ice cover, says Nowacek, who is the Repass-Rodgers University Associate Professor of Conservation Technology. “The lack of sea ice is good news for the whales in the short term, providing them with all-you-can-eat feasts as the krill migrate vertically toward the bay’s surface each night. But it is bad news in the long term for both species, and for everything else in the Southern Ocean that depends on krill,” says Ari S. Friedlaender, co-principal investigator on the project and a research scientist at Duke. –Physics.org

Yep, the weather here has been very weird. We have the classic World War II sirens all over Shelby county. Makes me think bombs are going to be dropped instead of tornadoes.

And now they're starting to do earthquake drills here. Starting to get weird here in the mid south.

Tungurahua, Ecuador Volcano, Sends 300 Fleeing From Truck-Sized Rocks
    Tungurahua Volcano Ecuador

    04/29/11

QUITO, Ecuador — Ecuador's Tungurahua volcano hurled truck-sized pyroclastic boulders more than a mile Friday in a powerful eruption that prompted at least 300 people to flee their homes, authorities said.

Schools were closed for a third straight day as ash showered down on a dozen towns in the sparsely populated area surrounding the 16,480-foot (5,023-meter) volcano.

Thundering explosions could be heard miles from Tungurahua, which is on the Andes cordillera 84 miles (135 kilometers) southeast of Ecuador's capital, Quito.

A state Geophysics Institute scientist monitoring the volcano from a nearby observation post said by phone that incandescent boulders were landing up to 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) beneath crater level.

"The smallest blocks are that size of an automobile while the biggest reach the size of a truck, which cause impact craters up to 10 meters (33 feet) wide as they hit the flanks," the scientist, Silvana Hidalgo, told The Associated Press.

She called the eruption level "moderate to high."

Civil defense officials reported an intense shower of ash east of the volcano, including in Banos, a tourist destination three miles (five kilometers) away that is popular for its hot springs.

The volcano has been active since 1999. At least four people were killed and thousands evacuated in eruptions in July and August of 2006.

I don't have a handy link about the tornado outbreak in the South of US, but it is a very serious situation for hundred of thousands of people who have nothing left except debris where their homes once stood. The biggest tornado that skipped over my house was a mile wide. At the moment, we are still doing search and rescue. They are picking the deceased out of the trees. Some may never be found in the immense forest tracts in N. Georgia. We are working locally to provide tools, food, clothing, shoes and vehicles. One employee who works for our neighborhood property owners association has three children and they have nothing left but a tangled mess. Please consider donating to the Red Cross with Pickens County, Georgia on the notation. Low income people don't always have homeowner's insurance, and even if they do, they still need something to eat and something to wear in the meantime. There are lots of people sleeping in cars and tents. Here in rural Georgia, people were already having a really hard time because of no work. Now, they have lost everything they owned, as well.

I cannot describe what the large tornado (the one that hit Tuscaloosa, Alabama), looked and sounded like...it ripped homes clean off their foundations. I believe it was an F5. The lightning was nothing like I have ever seen before. It was like a strobe light in a disco...and it went on for more than an hour.

I was personally outside smudging my home with white sage, praying, singing, and talking to the storm. It was all I could do. When the weather report showed the path leading directly to my area, saying it was a mile wide, and would be there in seven minutes or less, all I could think about is that I don't want to be on the news. We huddled in the bathroom as we don't have a basement.

It changes you to know you could be dead in seven minutes...

    Linda

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Southerners found their emergency safety net shredded yesterday as they tried to emerge from the nation’s deadliest tornado disaster since the Great Depression.

The death toll from Wednesday’s storms reached 328 across seven states, including 238 in Alabama, making it the deadliest US tornado outbreak since March 1932, when another Alabama storm killed 332 people. Tornadoes that swept across the South and Midwest in April 1974 left 315 people dead.

Hundreds if not thousands of people were injured — 900 in Tuscaloosa alone — and as many as 1 million Alabama homes and businesses remained without power.

The scale of the disaster astonished President Obama when he arrived in the state yesterday.

“I’ve never seen devastation like this,’’ he said, standing in bright sunshine amid the wreckage in Tuscaloosa, where dozens of people were killed and entire neighborhoods were flattened.

At least one tornado — a 205 miles-per-hour monster that left at least 13 people dead in Smithville, Miss. — ranked in the National Weather Service’s most devastating category, EF-5. Meteorologist Jim LaDue said he expects “many more’’ of Wednesday’s tornadoes to receive that same rating, with winds topping 200 miles per hour.

Tornadoes struck with unexpected speed in several states, and the difference between life and death was hard to fathom. Four people died in Bledsoe County, Tenn., but a family survived being tossed across a road in their modular home, which was destroyed, Mayor Bobby Collier said. http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2011/04/30/south_reels_in_aftermath_of_tornado_disaster/

April 30, 2011 – HAMBURG - On the Baltic island of Usedom (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern), the earth has opened up about 50 meter long and 4 meters deep. The gaping canyon looks like the little brother of the Grand Canyon in the USA. Did an ancient cavity collapse? Or is this a meteor strike? In the middle of a field at Zirchow gapes the mysterious hole. BILD reader reporter Andrew discovered it while walking. He believes: “This is a case of subsidence or sand collapsed. On the crater walls can be seen pattern “And. The gorge runs to a small lake. “That’s where bubbles rise mysterious out of the water.” It bubbles suspiciously- perhaps a gas. Probably, in the next few days, the earth will move again.
What exactly happened here? Harry Strohm (52) from the State Agency of Geology “said that surface water probably dug into this groove. This may be part of an earlier hole in GDR times. By the holes under the ground, the earth could be now collapsed. “So far there have been no landslides though the cause of the crater is still unknown. Usedom may not be in any danger. A geologist is yet to figure out if the hole will increase in size.

Yes, Sanicle, the Tuscaloosa tornado came within 3 or 4 miles of my house, and lifted up, touching down further northeast, I believe. There's so much destruction no one has more than a partial idea of what is down, where.

Thanks everybody for your kind words. I have seen tornado aftermath before, and it is one of those types of situations that you have to see it, to believe it. I didn't want to be a part of that scenario, so I hollered out the mayan name for the god of wind. That's how scared we were. My husband and daughter were glad I was smudging the house, which made me smile. I couldn't hold a drumbeat, however, so I must work on my skills. A very big lesson. It's all about using whatever tools you want to use, as long as you stay calm and centered. I figure it's a good idea to use the tools like drumming, as it worked for those who lived here before the white man came. My cherokee style drum, which I made, makes me aware of my assemblage point. It was the key to staying "together" so to speak. Linda

Much respect for you Linda. Thank God you've spent time studying to have these tools to use to protect your family. What an incredibly scrary scenario to face. I'm sitting here shaking my head in admiration for what you faced and how well you held it together to take the steps you did in the face of such overwhelming destructive power heading towards you all. The sound of it alone must have been chilling to the core. I guess in some way you could see what you're going through as one almighty test of all you've focused on learning over the years, proving the validity of it too. With all they say is still coming, I hope I have the bravery that you displayed in crisis if faced with something similar. You are an inspiration to me young lady. You and your neighbours will still be in my prayers as you deal with the aftermath.

What exactly happened here? Harry Strohm from the State Agency of Geology said that surface water probably dug into this groove. This may be part of an earlier hole in GDR times. By the holes under the ground, the earth could be now collapsed. So far there have been no landslides though the cause of the crater is still unknown. Usedom may not be in any danger. A geologist is yet to figure out if the hole will increase in size.(Bild)

The island is separated to the east from the neighbouring island of Wolin by the Świna strait (or river), which is the main route connecting Szczecin Bay with the Pomeranian Bay, a part of the Baltic Sea. The strait between the island and the mainland is called Peenestrom; it is an underwater extension of the valley of the Peene river, which flows into the westernmost part of Szczecin Bay. The island is mostly plain, partly covered by marshes. (Wikipedia)

The coast of Usedom Island is characterised by active cliff sections consisting of Pleistocene till, sand and low lying barriers of marine sand that accumulated during the Holocene.

The recent phase of sea-level rise causes coastal retreat along the cliffs as well as in some barrier sections. To analyse how the coastline has reacted over the past 200 years, historical maps and aerial photos were analysed.

To predict the change of the coastline and the morphodynamics in the next 100 years a model was developed considering both alternating wave climate and sea-level rise, but no coastal protection measures.

Based on scenarios provided by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute it could be shown that the trend observed in the past will continue in the future. However, the main impact of wave energy might decrease due to a changing distribution of wind directions, whereas an accelerated sea level rise will lead to higher transgression rates.

A new GIS-tool developed during the SEAREG project is potentially helpful for long-term spatial planning aspects. The tool assists in determining and assessing flood prone areas. The tool can be used based on data sets and scenarios currently available for planners. After setting different input themes like area of interest, land use, and protected areas, the user is able to overlay them, whereby the tool creates a raster. Thereby it is possible to valuate the information in different ways. Finally, the tool summarises the results of the different themes and fills the cells of a result raster with sums. This step generates an integrated result map. For the application of the GIS-tool it was proved necessary to create a new elevation model. With a resolution of 0.5 m it is more accurate than all other currently available models. (GSF.fi)
Affected areas of concern on Usedom Island are the low-lying barriers. Analysis of the data sets has shown that in all scenarios mainly agricultural areas will be affected, especially grasslands developed on drained fens (tab. 1). This is due to historical reasons as the old settlements are traditionally located on higher places. (GSF.fi)
