Strange cosmic ray hotspots stalk southern skies

Cosmic rays crashing into the Earth over the South Pole appear to be coming from particular locations, rather than being distributed uniformly across the sky. Similar cosmic ray "hotspots" have been seen in the northern skies too, yet we know of no source close enough to produce this pattern.

"We don't know where they are coming from," says Stefan Westerhoff of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Westerhoff and colleagues used the IceCube neutrino observatory at the South Pole to create the most comprehensive map to date of the arrival direction of cosmic rays in the southern skies. IceCube detects muons produced by neutrinos striking ice, but it also detects muons created by cosmic rays hitting Earth's atmosphere. These cosmic ray muons can be used to figure out the direction of the original cosmic ray particle.

    Good mystery

Between May 2009 and May 2010, IceCube detected 32 billion cosmic-ray muons, with a median energy of about 20 teraelectronvolts (TeV). These muons revealed, with extremely high statistical significance, a southern sky with some regions of excess cosmic rays ("hotspots") and others with a deficit of cosmic rays ("cold" spots).

Over the past two years, a similar pattern has been seen over the northern skies by the Milagro observatory in Los Alamos, New Mexico, and the Tibet Air Shower array in Yangbajain. "It is interesting that the pattern can be matched between [these experiments], at least qualitatively. They have very different techniques and systematic effects," says cosmic-ray physicist Paul Sommers at Pennsylvania State University in University Park. "I regard those hotspots as a good mystery."

It's a mystery because the hotspots must be produced within about 0.03 light years of Earth. Further out, galactic magnetic fields should deflect the particles so much that the hotspots would be smeared out across the sky. But no such sources are known to exist.
    Cosmic funnel

One of the hotspots seen by IceCube points in the direction of the Vela supernova remnant, a possible source of cosmic rays, but it's almost 1000 light years away. Cosmic rays coming from such large distances should be constantly buffeted and deflected by galactic magnetic fields on route, and should thus have lost all directionality by the time they reach Earth. In other words, such long-distance cosmic rays should appear to come from all parts of the sky. That's not what has been observed.

Milagro has also seen hotspots that appear to come from implausibly distant sources. As an explanation, Felix Aharonian of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies in Ireland and colleagues have suggested that there could be a "tube" of magnetic field lines extending between the source and our solar system, funnelling the cosmic rays towards us. However, Aharonian admits the theory is highly speculative.

Others have proposed that a local phenomenon called magnetic reconnection – in which solar magnetic field lines cross and rearrange, converting magnetic energy to kinetic energy – could be accelerating local cosmic rays to energies in the TeV range and beaming them towards Earth, creating the observed hotspots. "It implies that we have a Tevatron in the solar system," says Aharonian, referring to the particle accelerator at Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois. "That's also crazy, but it is at least less crazy than other explanations."

Westerhoff's team presented their results at the American Physical Society's meeting in Anaheim, California, on Saturday.

Tropical depression forms off the coast of the Philippines
May 4, 2011 – MANILA – An early-season tropical storm may spin up east of the Philippines amid widespread tropical rain during the next two to three days. Localized flooding and strong winds will accompany the system’s path through the Philippines region. The area of widespread showers and thunderstorms at midweek was stretched eastward over the southern Philippine Sea, from the island of Mindanao to the area of Yap and Palau. A tropical depression will form within 100-200 miles of southeastern Philippines during the next two to three days. Movement of this low will be to the west and northwest. Late in the week, the weather system may cross shores of the Philippines or, on the other hand, narrowly skirt the eastern side of the archipelago. Either way, flooding rain will be a threat to lands along and near the track. Damaging winds would also threaten the area, given the attainment of tropical storm status. Early next week, the low, potentially as a named tropical cyclone, will veer northward at sea, perhaps approaching Taiwan near the middle of next week. -Accuweather

May 5, 2011 – WARSAW – The weather spoiled the plans of temperate spring and if you have any disbelief; look out the window. Then get ready for tomorrow morning, because the Synoptics predict that within the next hour and night there could be more such snow attacks this spring. Like you, we are surprised to see these pictures. Currently, snowfall and snow showers are in the Lower Silesia (in the Sudeten Mountains are quite intense.) According to the synoptic TVN Meteo, in the coming hours of snowfall and rain also appears in Lubuskie, in the Opole and in the center of the country. Rainfall accompanied by a drop in temperature by 1 – 4 degrees. At night the snow and rain showers will occur within a belt from the center of Upper Silesia, Mazowsze and Podlasie after Suwalki. Estimated height snow from 1 to 5 cm, locally up to 10 cm, and in mountains up to 20 cm. The late seasonal snow is partly related to the influx of cold arctic air masses over Scandinavia and the Arctic Ocean. At night, there will be the country’s strong decline in temperature – in Pomerania and Kujawy to -5 degrees, Wielkopolska and Lower Silesia to -4 degrees when the ground temperature is cooler. Yes Carol. Last Tuesday it snowed heavily here for 3 hours. But the snow didn't stay long. the next day it was sunny and 11 degrees C. Tomorrow 18 degrees C and Saturday 21. Such things like May snowfall are very rare here.In fact I rememeber one over 30 years ao but not as intensive.

We've been getting similar weather in North East Oregon burgundia, where it melts off the next day but we've only had 2 days this spring where the weather was actually warm. All the rest - cold, cold, cold.

It seems we are colder now. It snowed five times last winter here in Georgia. Is the N. American tectonic plate moving in a northwesterly direction like some are stating? Will it stay colder overall? I think it is trending that way here in the south US, not that I mind. I don't quite understand the ramifications of this slow pole shift. I do think it's colder than usual. It didn't even get that warm here last summer. Of course, typical me, I have no link to back it up with scientific statistics. But something is up, as last year the crops were early, and this year everything is very late. Hmmm.

MAMMATUS OVER MINNESOTA: On May 10th, a severe storm captured national attention when it dumped golf-ball-sized hail on a Minnesota Twins baseball game. "I missed the hail," reports John Rogers of New Hope, Minnesota, "but I got a nice view of the clouds that formed after the storm passed." He snapped this picture in waning twilight at 8:30 pm local time: These are mammatus clouds. Named for their resemblance to a cow's underbelly, they sometimes appear at the end of severe thunderstorms when the thundercloud is breaking up. Researchers have called them an "intriguing enigma," because no one knows exactly how and why they form. The clouds are fairly common but often go unnoticed because potential observers have been chased indoors by the rain. If you are one of them, dash outside when the downpour stops; you could witness a beautiful mystery in the sky.

Ominous. That doesn't look normal at all, does it.

There have been a lot of jets flying around here at very high altitudes. Not passenger jets, but air force jets. They fly straight up and criss-cross and whatever it is that they do. It looks like both vapor trails AND chemtrails. It's really hard to capture in one image.

I did photograph a circular cloud the other night and will see if I can find it. Even so, it looked stranger in the context of everything else going on around it -- too many different shapes to look normal.

Glad to hear you get to recharge your batteries for a bit.

    Safe travels.

    me

P.S.: they fly so high that they do not make any noise.

They come from north of here.

    ____________________

    Edit -

Nope. It doesn't look as intense as the entire view (okay, not intense at all, really). AND, this cloud was a perfect oval when it first appeared. It lasted a while. This is looking w/nw. To the north and east were vapor trails and/chemtrails. My camera eats batteries and this is AS* far as I could get. argh

I saw at least 3 or 4 of those jets leaving chem trails yesterday on the drive home from Washington. Was surprised because the skies have been clear most of the time here. Today we have thunder storms.

Thank you both so much. The extra prayers, energy and support are working. I think we are both still here because of that extra support. Battling demons isn't always easy - nor clearing up karma. The multiple heatlh problems that have occurred throughout all of this has been very difficult for my mum. (Lymphomoa and chemo/radiation treatments, broken ribs from a fall, infection with high fever finally under control) The best part is that we finally have the relationship we've always wanted and are enjoying each other. Conservationists warn extinction threat growing across Europe
Posted on May 19, 2011 by The Extinction Protocol

    http://theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com/2011/05/19/conservationists-warn-extinction-threat-growing-across-europe/

May 19, 2011 – BRUSSELS – The Iberian lynx that prowls the grasslands of southern Spain; the Mediterranean monk seal swimming waters off Greece and Turkey; the Bavarian pine vole that forages in the high meadows of the Alps. These are among hundreds of European animal species — up to a quarter of the total native to the continent — that are threatened with extinction according to a warning issued this month by the European Union. “Biodiversity is in crisis, with species extinctions running at unparalleled rates,” said a statement from the European Union’s Environment Commissioner, Janez Potocnik. The threatened species include mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds and butterflies. Plant life is under threat as well. The crisis is due to several factors, including loss of habitat, pollution, alien species encroachment, climate change and overfishing. Critics say the EU’s proposed solutions don’t go far enough and lack funding. “Life is possible because of biodiversity,” said Ana Nieto, with the International Union for Conservation of Nature. “Everything comes from biodiversity. Everything comes from having well-functioning ecosystems.” The crisis threatens humans as well, potentially wreaking economic and social havoc in Europe, said Potocnik spokesman Joe Hennon. The continuing loss of birds can allow insects to breed at alarming rates, harming crops, Hennon said. A reduced number of bees inhibits plant pollination. Diminishing forests mean water is not cleaned naturally and the soil is loosened, too, making floods and mud slides more likely. All of that, Hennon said, means governments should spend money preserving species from extinction. “People say, ‘Yes, but we don’t have the money to spend on environmental protection. Surely growth and jobs are more important,” Hennon said. “You have to say, Well, look what happened in Pakistan last year. You can have catastrophic flooding because forests have been cut down. So it ends up costing you more in the long run.” –Yahoo News

Ermine moth larvae in Bradford's Shipley Hall Fields strip 15 trees bare!

A caterpillar infestation at a Bradford park is to be left alone for nature to take its course.
Residents living near the park in Shipley Fields Road, Frizinghall, said the grey moth larvae covering the trees were like something out of a horror film.
The caterpillars stripped leaves and bark from trees and left sticky cobwebs in their wake.
The outbreak of the unsightly creatures is thought to have been helped by the recent spell of warm weather.

We have already seen a similar projection of Elenin's path into the solar system . There are some interesting clues about past earthquakes . Time will tell ( September , October , November ) . In those months people should watch the behavior and the whereabout of politicians . Running into underground bases would be a clue .
