Quake rocks Vanuatu

A strong 6.5 magnitude earthquake has struck off the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu, the US Geological Survey says, but no tsunami warning has been issued.

The shallow quake hit 77 kilometres north-west of the nation's capital Port Vila at 1.48pm (1.48pm AEDT) at a depth of 26.6 kilometres, the USGS said.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

Vanuatu is on the Pacific "Ring of Fire",’ which on Friday saw a 9.0 magnitude quake and tsunami strike off the coast of Japan, causing devastation.

Earlier today a 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck the central region of Chile.

There was no immediate report of injuries, local media reported.

Chileans are still jittery after the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the country in February 2010. That quake and subsequent tsunami killed 524 people.

It's been a case of waiting for the right time, as time wouldn't allow anything to be written unless time is ready.

March 18, 2011 – AUSTRALIA, MOOROOKA - Feral cats “the size of dogs’’ have been terrorizing Moorooka residents for more than a year, with one resident and her dog mauled just last week. Residents of Lincoln St say they have been scratched, bitten, hissed at and intimidated several times by the cat pack. They say they asked five times to have the cats removed, but were told by Brisbane City Council that they would have to set traps and remove the cats themselves. But now the council is taking steps to have the cats rounded up. A spokesperson said the cats had an owner who was surrendering some of them to council shelters for rehoming. Residents maintain however that some of the cats are wild.

Marlene Jans was taking her five-month-old fox terrier for a walk last Monday when two of the huge felines attacked the pair. “I was crossing the road, it was dark and I couldn’t see them,’’ Ms Jans said. “Then, bam, one came at my dog, one came at me. One was biting my leg. I went for my dog because she was screaming. “I had to kick them away. I was really scared and I was dripping blood.’ Her wound later became infected and she is now terrified to venture out at night. “In a suburb you often get large numbers of cats that grew up together and they go to where people feed them.’’ He said it was now the breeding season for cats. –City South

This is the third reported incident of wild animals forming packs and terrorizing humans and other animals in 2 months. We feel this is another alarming trend which indicates the web of life on planet Earth is unraveling as encroachment and earthchanges continue to stress wildlife habitats.

Shortly after the road collapsed, emergency crews said not even CAL-TRANS vehicles were being allowed near the washed-out section of road because it was so dangerous.

Employees at the Rocky Point Restaurant said tourists were temporarily stuck at the restaurant shortly after the collapse and that they believed the road had been falling into the ocean for most of the day.

Workers said they heard from tourists who said they drove across a depression in the road, causing it to become deeper.

Holi - Hindi Religious Festival

In Vaishnava Theology, Hiranyakashipu is the great king of demons, and he had been granted a boon by Brahma, which made it almost impossible for him to be killed. The boon was due to his long penance, after which he had demanded that he not be killed "during day or night; inside the home or outside, not on earth or on sky; neither by a man nor an animal; neither by astra nor by shastra". Consequently, he grew arrogant and attacked the Heavens and the Earth. He demanded that people stop worshipping gods and start praying to him.

Despite this, Hiranyakashipu's own son, Prahlada, was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. In spite of several threats from Hiranyakashipu, Prahlada continued offering prayers to Lord Vishnu. He was poisoned but the poison turned to nectar in his mouth. He was ordered to be trampled by elephants yet remained unharmed. He was put in a room with hungry, poisonous snakes and survived. All of Hiranyakashipu's attempts to kill his son failed. Finally, he ordered young Prahlada to sit on a pyre on the lap of his demoness sister, Holika, who could not die because she also had a boon which would prevent fire from burning her. Prahlada readily accepted his father's orders, and prayed to Vishnu to keep him safe. When the fire started, everyone watched in amazement as Holika burnt to death, while Prahlada survived unharmed, the burning of Holika is celebrated as Holi 2011.

Later Lord Vishnu came in the form of a Narasimha (who is half-man and half-lion) and killed Hiranyakashipu at dusk (which was neither day nor night), on the steps of the porch of his house (which was neither inside the house nor outside) by restraining him on his lap (which is neither in the sky nor on the earth) and mauling him with his claws (which are neither astra nor shastra).

In Vrindavan and Mathura, where Lord Krishna grew up, the festival is celebrated for 16 days (until Rangpanchmi) in commemoration of the divine love of Radha for Krishna. Lord Krishna is believed to have popularized the festival by playing pranks on the gopis here. Krishna is believed to have complained to his mother about the contrast between his dark skin complexion and Radha's (Shakti or energy that drives the world) fair skin complexion. Krishna's mother decided to apply colour to Radha's face. The celebrations officially usher in spring, the celebrated season of love.

There is alternative story detailing the origin of Holi. This story is about Kamadeva, a god of love. Kama's body was destroyed when he shot his weapon at Shiva in order to disrupt his meditation and help Parvati to marry Shiva. Shiva then opened his third eye, the gaze of which was so powerful that Kama's body was reduced to ashes. For the sake of Kama's wife Rati (passion), Shiva restored him, but only as a mental image, representing the true emotional and spiritual state of love rather than physical lust. The Holi bonfire is believed to be celebrated in commemoration of this event.

A two story house on their block is tilted at a 20 degree angle and could collapse at any moment. A crack in the earth that first appeared six weeks ago is now threatening about four homes. The City of Everett has “red tagged” the home on Burl which is collapsing. That means no one is allowed near the property. A “yellow tag” was posted on two other properties where the land is giving way. A surface slide in the area of Rob and Margaret Lund’s house caused their deck and cement patio to completely collapse. “There is nothing to stop this from happening again and again,” said Rob Lund. Recent heavy rains has caused the sliding to accelerate in the neighborhood. Neighbors said the problem appears to be getting much worse. “If that house goes, the land will go with it,” said Steve Mosman, who lives right next door to the collapsing home. “It would pull our land down with it. We just don’t know what is going to happen.”

ICELAND – A major explosive eruption on the SE caldera margin in 1875 was one of Iceland’s largest during historical time. It resulted in the formation of a smaller 4.5-km-wide caldera, now filled by Öskjuvatn lake, that truncates the rim of the larger central caldera. I see that in last week that there was a deep earthquake swarm that took place under Askja volcano. This time around the earthquake swarm lasted for about 75 seconds and the depth of this earthquake swarm was about 20 km. The location of the earthquakes was north-east of the main Askja caldera, but within the Askja volcano system itself. The largest earthquake last week in Askja volcano was ML2.2 in size. Last year there was also a deep earthquake swarm in Askja, but that time around it lasted for few hours, not second. That activity took place in Week 09 of the year 2010. But this deep earthquake swarm suggests that magma is on the move under Askja volcano, as was the case in the year 2010 when a similar event did happen.

March 18, 2011 – ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — The ground shook briefly this morning, but nobody seems quite sure why. First Coast News has received several calls, as has the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, about two tremors felt this morning around 9:30 am. Sheriff’s deputies are among those who reported feeling the shaking, and the Associated Press reported the tremors were felt in Flagler County as well. A geologist at the University of Florida said nothing showed up on any earthquake detecting equipment. The cause of the shaking is speculation at this point, but the sheriff’s office said the sensation was stronger near the ocean. No damage has been reported.

March 18, 2011 – INDONESIA , JAKARTA – Indonesian volcano Mount Karangetang spewed hot clouds of ash and trapped up to 40 people between lava flows on its slopes Friday as the government raised an alert for the peak to the highest level and evacuated villages. Lava streamed 1,500 metres (5,000 feet) down the volcano on Siau island in North Sulawesi province and hot clouds rose 3,800 metres (12,500 feet) into the air, the head of the country’s vulcanology agency said. “We’ve ordered the villages to be emptied,” agency chief Surono told Reuters. The island is sparsely populated but people live near the peak where the land is fertile. A government official in the region said three villages, of about 300 people in all, had been evacuated but 40 people were trapped between two rivers filled with lava. It was not clear if the trapped people were still alive. The volcano erupts frequently but Surono said the alert was raised because of the size of the hot clouds. Indonesia, on the Pacific “Ring of fire,” has dozens of active volcanoes. Hot ash clouds from Mount Bromo on the main island of Java in January led several airlines to cancel flights to the tourist destination of Bali.

You may need to help me out a bit more here Mudra. When I click on the link it takes me back to Carols post as the first post, but it is not. Could you direct me to where I can find the first half. What I wish to accomplish is the originally verbage I used when I first started this thread, so that I can repost it. I think it is important that new viewers see not only the purpose, but also the premise. This helps keep it relevant, and for those who don't want to be bombarded by belief related information or a argueable concepts. Just factual and abnormal "Earth" anomalies or changes they they can access via this thread.

Additionally, the Gulf Oil thread still seems to have kept intact over 10,000 views despite being cut in half. Where as this one being cut in half kept intact a little over 200.
Just trying to identify the functionalities of this forum and it's content.

There were 3 strong aftershocks in NZ today

March 20, 2011 – CHRISTCHURCH, NZ – Three aftershocks, one a strong 5.1 magnitude, have rattled earthquake-weary residents of Christchurch. Christchurch was ravaged by a 6.3 earthquake on February 22 that killed more than 150 people and has experienced many aftershocks in the month since then. But three tremors rolled across the city in quick succession on Sunday night, one of 4.5 at 9.43pm (1943 AEDT), the second of 5.1 four minutes later and the third of 2.9. The second and third shocks were in almost exactly the same location – 10km east of the city and 10km and ll km deep. No damage was immediately reported. One source told NZPA the first tremor was what Christchurch residents had become accustomed to as a “fairly standard” aftershock but the second jolt was much stronger and lasted far longer

Indeed the whole of the pacific plate has been showing small quakes today http://www.iris.edu/seismon/ which is a good thing because it implies that pressure is being released and maybe we will not see another big quake for now. It can not be guaranteed but it is hopeful

My friend in Tampa Florida is reporting a large sinkhole in their neighborhood for the past two months. It is getting larger, slowly. The sinkhole is taking one house down, and of course they are worried about what is next...why is this not also on "the news?"
