THE STRONGEST FLARE YET (UPDATED AGAIN): Sunspot AR3842 exploded again on Oct. 3rd, producing the strongest solar flare of Solar Cycle 25 so far. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the X9.1-category blast:

Radiation from the flare ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere and caused a deep shortwave blackout over Africa and the South Atlantic. Ham radio operators in the area may have noticed loss of signal at frequencies below 30 MHz for as much as a half an hour after 12:18 UTC.

The explosion also produced a halo CME. Now that a full set of images has arrived from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), it's clear that the CME is potent. NOAA forecasts of a strong geomagnetic storm when it arrives on Oct. 6th are probably correct

CHANCE OF MORE X-FLARES TODAY: The solar disk is filled with big sunspots. Three of them (3842, 3843, 3848) have unstable 'delta-class' magnetic fields that harbor energy for strong solar flares. NOAA forecasters estimate a 75% chence of M-class flares and a 35% chance of X-flares during the next 24 hours.

GEOMAGNETIC STORMS THIS WEEKEND: This week, two powerful X-class solar flares (X7.1 and X9.1) and a series of lesser M-flares hurled CMEs toward Earth. A NOAA model shows three of them hitting or grazing our planet between Oct. 4th and 7th:



The most potent CME (#2 in the graphic above) is expected to arrive during the late hours of Oct. 5th (UTC). This could spark a strong strong G3-class geomagnetic storms with auroras at mid-latitudes. For observers in the USA, this means the night of Oct. 5-6.

The other two CMEs (#1 and #3) are less potent. By themselves they might not cause much of a storm. At this time of year, however, even weak CMEs can be effective due to the autumnal Russell-McPherron effect. The collective effect all three CMEs could therefore cause strong storms throughout the forecast interval.

A Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) originally projected to arrive on October 5th, is now expected earlier — on tomorrow, October 4th.

It is so powerful that it is expected to produce a “G3” geomagnetic storm — perhaps even a higher level. One of the most troublesome symptoms or activations from these high-powered flares and CMEs is the inability to sleep well at night.

> Pockets of microbes have been found living within a sealed fracture in 2-billion-year-old rock. RARE LOW LATITUDE AURORAS: Northern Lights in Mexico? Believe it. On the night of Oct. 10-11, auroras descended all the way to the tropics. René Saade photographed the display from the beach at Mazatlan, Sinaloa:




"We are at 23 degrees north latitude," says Saade. "We also saw auroras during the May 10th superstorm. Seeing auroras this far south twice in a year is amazing!!"

Another notable low-latitude sighting comes from Priscilla Coote in Key West (+24.7 N). "How often do you see auroras and coconut palms in the same photo?" she wonders. Also, the Sociedad de Astronomía del Caribe is reporting auroras photographed from Toa Baja, Puerto Rico (+18.4 N), and from a cruiseship just south of Cuba (~21 N).

This is footage from the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in the northeastern most county of Tennessee, Johnson County. This area is poor and sparsely populated. The news isn't covering it and the politicians aren't visiting. Homes are gone, churches were washed away, roads are gone and homes are cut off. Many people are still without power. There are families living in tents and the harsh mountain winter is coming.

The people of Johnson County are strong determined folks, who are doing everything they can to help one another. Every farmer with a tractor was out helping. Every neighbor with a chainsaw was cutting the endless downed trees. The heavy equipment you saw toward the end of the video belongs to a local construction company. They have been running nonstop repairing washed out roads so their neighbors could get out and lineman could get in to restore power. We passed crew after crew of lineman. We were told that the trees were cleared from the roads so all this work could start by Team Rubicon, a veteran lead humanitarian organization and the US Forest Service. A portion of The Cherokee National Forest is in Johnson County. The campgrounds, picnic areas, roads and especially the streams and rivers inside the National Forest have all been damaged in both Tennessee and North Carolina.

We and I mean all of us together are going to do what we can to help those survived by the disaster of Hurricane Helene. You are their hope. A rare EF-3 tornado tore through the Avenir community in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida on October 9, 2024, as Hurricane “Milton” unleashed a tornado outbreak across Florida. A powerful EF-3 tornado tore through Palm Beach Gardens on October 9, ripping off roofs and causing widespread damage. With winds of 225 km/h (140 mph), the tornado lifted a construction dumpster into the air and tossed it on top of a home in Regency Community at Avenir.
“I’ve never surveyed a tornado with this much damage and severity. EF-3 tornadoes are very rare in South Florida,” said NWS Meteorologist Robert Molleda. “It’s probably been many years since we’ve had an EF-3-rated tornado here in South Florida,” he added.

WATCH SOHO CROSS THE COMET'S ORBITAL PLANE: Like Earth, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) crossed the orbital plane of Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS on Oct. 14th. This movie from the spacecraft's coronagraph shows what happened:




The diagonal band of light is comet dust scattering sunlight into the coronagraph's camera. When SOHO crosses the orbital plane, the band shrinks into an equisitely thin line. Imagine flying a spacecraft through the rings of Saturn and seeing them edge-on. Something similar happened to SOHO.

Here on Earth, we saw the thin line as well. It was the 'anti-tail' sticking out of the comet's head. You can see it in this amazing movie from Lorenzo Comolli of Sicily, Italy, taken at the same time as SOHO's movie. Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS has definitely lived up to the hype.

COMET TSUCHINSHAN-ATLAS IN THE MOONLIGHT: Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is dimming a little as it recedes from the sun, but it is still a beautiful sight in the evening sky. Petr Horálek photographed it in bright moonlight on Oct. 15th:




"The nearly full Moon makes the comet a bit harder to see (just for a while - only 2 days), but definitely it is still very photogenic!" says Horálek.

See for yourself. The comet pops out of the twilight about 45 minutes after local sunset. It is easy to find using binoculars and, then, once found, is equally easy to see with the unaided eye. The comet's long tail stretches more than 10 degrees above the western horizon, remaining visible in the moonlight for as much as an hour after the head of the comet sets.

THE NIGHT WHEN ROADS IN KENTUCKY TURNED RED: The severe geomagnetic storm of Oct. 10th sparked bright auroras over many US states. Judy Lundquist photographed the display from Lawrenceburg, Kentucky; even the road at her feet turned red. But the lights overhead were, in fact, not auroras:

Yes, Earth has rings. They're made of electricity--a donut-shaped circuit carrying millions of amps around our planet. On Oct 10th, severe geomagnetic activity overheated the ring current, and some of that heat leaked into the upper atmosphere, producing a red glow.
