Culebra Event

The Culebra event is an upcoming globally devastating mega earthquake that will result in permanent changes worldwide to current human society. It will be by far the largest earthquake in modern times.

The cause of this mega earthquake will be from the release of a jammed section of the Pacific plate. The Pacific plate is locked against the plates next to it, and is very tightly jammed under Japan. There are signs that the Pacific plate is getting close to the point that it will no longer hold up against the built-up pressure and release in the mega earthquake. It is estimated that the size of the Culebra event will be magnitude 10.3 or greater with epicenter about 200 km northeast of Tokyo, Japan. The latest estimate for timing is by year 2024. The main rupture path should run from Guam, through Japan, and through Alaska and may extend to Taiwan and other areas of the west Pacific.

The major impacts will include damage from shaking on a global scale, seiche waves, and tsunamis. Areas without earthquake building protections will be most susceptible to major damages from the earthquake worldwide. These are parts of the world that don't usually have major seismic activity like New York City, London, Paris, Hong Kong, and Sao Paulo. The result will be an extensive debris field of ruined cities, pipelines and other infrastructure, and ships dragged and deposited inland. The tsunami is estimated to be several hundreds of meters high when it smashes into the west coast of the US, destroying urban areas well inland from the coast such as in metro LA and San Francisco Bay area. Seiche waves will cause extensive flooding of low-lying areas in other parts of the world such as the east coast of the United States.

The strongest signs showing that this mega earthquake is coming are from the slowdown in earthquakes in certain areas and change in earthquake types. North America has seen a significant decrease in major earthquakes since the end of the 1800s, and starting later in the 1900s for a wide portion of Europe. Across Asia, a wide area that once had massive earthquakes like magnitude 8+ more often stopped getting them several decades ago. Earthquakes bigger than magnitude 7.7 have also been paused in a very wide area all around the Philippine blocking location for many years. The corridor from Southern Japan through most of the Philippines has seen a long pause in earthquakes bigger than magnitude 7.1 that has been happening since the end of the last century. Many areas in the west Pacific have not seen thrust earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or larger in many years. Examples include the region extending from Toyko, all the way down through the Philippines. And the eastern boundary of the Australia plate from Fiji, down to New Zealand where there has been a large number of magnitude 7+ earthquakes, but no thrust type. This is a sign of restricted plate movement.

After the Culebra event, human life will be very different but with minimal changes to wildlife and habitats. The global economy will completely collapse and global trade and industrial output will grind to a complete halt. There will be a major drop in the global human population ranging from tens of millions of people to as much as billions.
