    A RARE SINE WAVE IN THE MAGNETOSPHERE: Imagine you're at a hard rock concert. Waves of heavy metal crash against your eardrums, you can barely hear a thing, when, suddenly, the delicate trill of a flute cuts through the cacophony.

    Something like that happened to Stuart Green of Lancashire UK during the severe geomagnetic storm of Oct. 10, 2024. "My backyard magnetogram was a riot," says Green. "But when I took a closer look, there was a delicate wave riding on top of the 'noise.'"

    Green detected a rare "pulsation continuous"--or "Pc wave" for short. This is research jargon meaning, essentially, a pure sine wave in the magnetosphere. Pc waves are classified into 5 types depending on their frequency. Green's specimens are Pc1 and Pc2.

    Usually, Pc waves are recorded only during periods of extreme quiet. They are delicate and hard to detect. Capturing one during riotous geomagnetic activity is extremely unusual. It is a testament to the sensitivity of Green's research-grade (albeit homemade) magnetometer--and the degree to which every mode of the magnetosphere was simultaneously activated by the Oct. 10th storm.

    Zooming into Green's data shows the 7-to-8 second regularity of the waves

    So what? These particular waves matter because they can help satellites survive severe space storms. Fast Pc1 and Pc2 waves scatter "killer electrons" out of the Van Allen radiation belts, making the region safer for satellites that orbit through the belts when they are supercharged by solar activity.

    SOLAR ACTIVITY REMAINS LOW: For the 3rd day in a row, solar activity remains low. No large sunspots are facing Earth, and NOAA forecasters say there is no more than a 10% chance of X-class solar flares. Isn't this supposed to be Solar Max? Yes, but even during Solar Max, the sun sometimes takes a few days off. Activity will probably resume later this week. S

    ACID CLOUDS IN THE STRATOSPHERE: The season for polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) is about to begin. NASA climate models show the temperature of the north polar stratosphere rapidly dropping. It is only days away from reaching the cold threshold for Type I PSCs:

    Normally, the stratosphere has no clouds at all. It is like a vacuum up there, drier than the driest deserts on Earth. Only when the temperature drops to a staggeringly low -78°C (195 K) can widely-spaced molecules in the stratosphere gather to form clouds.

    If NASA's forecast is correct, clouds could start forming this week inside the Arctic Circle. The first clouds will be Type I PSCs. These are made of water, nitric acid, and sometimes sulfuric acid. Type I PSCs are bad news: They destroy ozone. The presence of Type I clouds over a region can lead to the formation of an ozone hole.

    As winter deepens, Type II clouds could form as well; they require temperatures as low as -85°C (188 K). Type II clouds are not so bad. Made of pure water ice, they are benign and colorful. Witnesses who see them usually agree that they are the most beautiful clouds on Earth.

    Type I clouds are pale and filamentary, often likened to noctilucent clouds. Type II clouds are a jaw-dropping riot of color with no real comparison among other clouds. If you live inside the Arctic Circle, keep an eye out for PSCs (especially Type I) in the weeks ahead.

    ATMOSPHERIC RADIATION IS PLUMMETING: Cosmic rays in our atmosphere just hit a 10-year low. The sharp decline is shown in this dataset of more than 300 high-altitude balloon flights over California from 2015 to 2024:

    According to the data, atmospheric radiation has been dropping about 10% per year for the past three years, resulting in a nearly 1/3rd decrease overall. The decline isn't only in the stratosphere. It is also filtering down to aviation altitudes. This means air travelers are absorbing less radiation when they fly.

    At first glance, this seems counterintuitive. NASA and NOAA recently announced that Solar Maximum has arrived, bringing solar activity to 10+ year high. So why is radiation decreasing? Answer: We're not measuring radiation from the sun. This radiation comes from deep space.

    Supernova explosions and other violent events fill the Milky Way with high energy particles called "galactic cosmic rays." These subatomic cannonballs penetrate the walls of spacecraft and pose a long-term health threat to astronauts. They're actually worse than solar flares.

    When galactic cosmic rays hit the top of Earth's atmosphere, they create a spray of secondary cosmic rays, which we measure using radiation sensors and high-altitude balloons.     The phenomenon is called "triboluminescence."     The avalanche Li witnessed was rich in ice. "The serac would have fragmented as it tumbled down and smashed into natural obstacles." The most significant "smash points" seem to have produced the most blue light.

"However, I asked some friends who frequently photograph snow-capped mountains, and one of them mentioned having seen blue light with the naked eye during an avalanche, though they didn’t capture it on camera."

    BLUE AVALANCHE UPDATE: Readers have offered many thoughtful and erudite comments about the "blue avalanche" story. Thank you! Among many excellent comments, we would like to single out this one from George Kourounis, Explorer In Residence at the Royal Canadian Geographical Society: "I am familiar with the avalanche lights phenomenon. I first heard about it from polar guide Rustin Mesdag who saw it with the naked eye while camping in Antarctica. I document all kinds of natural phenomena, and this was news to me.     "Our initial hypothesis is that the luminescence may result from friction-induced lighting during the fragmentation of ice."

    The phenomenon is called "triboluminescence." Legendary physicist Richard Feynman explains it best: "When you take a lump of sugar and crush it with a pair of pliers in the dark, you can see a bluish flash. Some other crystals do that too. Nobody knows why." You can create triboluminescent flashes yourself by smashing Lifesavers.

    The avalanche Li witnessed was rich in ice. "It started with a blocky serac, which randomly calved from a glacier near the mountain's peak," says Carson Reid, a mountaineer who analyzed Li's movie. "The serac would have fragmented as it tumbled down and smashed into natural obstacles." The most significant "smash points" seem to have produced the most blue light.

    Li shared his movie with other astrophographers in China. One of them found a similar blue flash in footage of a completely different mountain in Xinjiang, China three weeks earlier.

    THANKSGIVING GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: A G2-class geomagnetic storm is possible on Nov. 28-29 when a CME is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. The CME was hurled into space by a magnetic filament attached to sunspot 3901, which erupted on Nov. 25th.     BLACK AURORAS OVER ALASKA? Todd Salat is a veteran photographer of auroras in Alaska. For years he has chased the lights and seen most of what Mother Nature has to offer. But even he was puzzled on Nov. 22nd when these strangely-shaped auroras appeared overhead:

    "I saw these bizarre auroras drift over southcentral Alaska around 4 am last Friday morning," says Salat. "It came up from the northwest and I was like, whoa! It looked like the letter E to me."

    Salat may have witnessed an episode of 'black auroras.' They are dark rings or black blobs that sometimes appear in an otherwise ordinary expanse of auroral light. For example, look at Figure 1 in this research paper on the topic. Some researchers call them "anti-auroras." The black auroras in Salat's photo are circled here.

    Ordinary auroras are caused by electrons raining down from space. Black auroras are the opposite. Instead of electrons raining down, electrons are propelled upwards back into space.     Sensors onboard the spaceraft detected strong positive electric fields in the black aurora zone. These fields reversed the normal downward rain of aurora-causing electrons.

    Dutchsinse: 11/30/2024 -- The 'Polar Vortex' is back! Same location (Southeast Canada)

    The center of the mega-low pressure system located Southeast of Hudson Bay Canada in Quebec (just East of the Ontario border, North of Lake Erie).

    The counter clockwise rotating huge low pressure system is pulling arctic air down from the far Northwest regions of Canada (north pole).. creating a pipeline of cold air from the arctic, delivered along the jet stream far Southeast into the Midwest and Southern United States.

    Something is going to have to push this system out of the way, currently I don't see anything on the next few days menu big enough to displace this system directly.

    As you can see, it is beginning to rotate around again in a full rotation, and wobble BACK WEST instead of moving on to the East.

    Thus this giant low will be sticking around for at least a few more days, if not longer, until it moves to the East Northeast, we're going to have some rounds of extreme cold, followed by warm blasts as the low pressure system pulls in warm air from the South and Southwest (in the same way it is pulling down cold air from the north).

This is the 6th month in a row the south has significantly outperformed the north. You can see the same pattern visually in composite images from October, September, August, July, and, to a lesser extent, June 2024.

    What’s going on? Solar physicists have long known that the two hemispheres of the sun don’t always perform in sync. Solar Max in the north can be offset from Solar Max in the south by as much as two years, a delay known as the "Gnevyshev gap." This means half of Solar Max may still lie in the future--welcome news for sky watchers eager for more years of auroras. Stay tuned!

    Make that a sub-sundog. Ordinary sundogs appear to the left and right of the sun. The ones Skillern saw were below the sun.

    The key to this atmospheric optics phenomenon is the subsun--a dazzling reflection of the sun in the clouds. This subsun acts like a miniature sun, shining through ice crystals to create sub-sundogs and more.

    Storm Darragh was officially named by the UK Met Office in collaboration with Met Éireann, and the Netherlands’ KNMI on Thursday, December 5, 2024. The storm is set to impact Ireland and the UK from Friday, December 6 into December 7. Darragh follows Storm Bert, which caused devastating floods in parts of South Wales and South West England in late November. Darragh is expected to produce less rainfall but more severe winds, unlike Bert. “Storm Darragh is going to bring quite impactful winds across the country through Friday and into Saturday as the center of the storm tracks across the northwest of the country,” Met Éireann Deputy Head of Forecasting, Liz Coleman, said.

    “While it will be windy everywhere, it’s the gusts which can be the most damaging. The intense winds are expected to occur overnight but will continue for a time into Saturday morning, especially in those counties under Orange wind warnings. We ask people to be prepared and to secure any loose objects ahead of the storm and to plan their journeys safely if they need to be out on Saturday morning as there could be trees or power lines down.” “There will also be heavy rain associated with Storm Darragh which may lead to some localized flooding, along with hazardous traveling conditions,” Coleman said.

    Radiation Spike - San Diego, CA. People wondering: Was Yesterday's "Earthquake" actually Underwater Nuke Blast?
    After yesterday's offshore "earthquake," there is presently a significant Radiation Spike in San Diego, CA, which is now showing 600 Counts-Per-Minute (CPM) of Gamma Radiation in the 800 KeV range; about triple of everywhere else in California. This reading comes from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Radiation Monitor Network, as being presently reported by the private sector website Nuclear Emergency Tracking Center (NETC).

    The reason this is peculiar, has to do with yesterday's offsshore, Magnitude 7.0 earthquake, 647 miles farther north, off the shore of Mendocino, CA.

    That earthquake took place where you see the large red circle offshore in the ocean on this map from yesterday's United States Geologic Survey (USGS) website:

    That "earthquake" has an interesting, and curious "Waveform" on seismic monitors. Here is what the waveform looked like; focus on the bright red lines on the bottom right seismic scale image - notice they don't gradually build-up to the main quake, they just "explode:"

    A number of observers have mentioned that this waveform bears more resemblance to that of an explosion than to an earthquake. The sudden, and massive surge of seismic waves is *NOT* what one typically sees when a large earthquake takes place. Usually, there is a small, but visible build-up to the main quake.
