    UPDATED 3:00 PM PT — Friday, January 3, 2020

The capitol of Indonesia remains in crisis following the city’s worst flood since 2013. Friday reports said the death toll in Jakarta has risen to at least 43 with approximately 192,000 others displaced.

The flooding broke out on New Year’s Day during citywide celebrations. Torrential rain led to deep floodwaters, which were up to 10 feet in some areas.

Residents hold a lead rope through a flooded neighborhood in Tanggerang outside Jakarta, Indonesia, Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020.
Since then, parts of the region have reportedly seen water begin to subside. However, officials said the city is still in turmoil.

“Strong currents swept away the cars, so they were overturned,” said one resident. “The problem is this blocked access for teams providing aid.”

Moving forward, officials are launching a cloud seeding program in hopes of dispersing any nearby rain clouds while the city recovers. Cloud seeding introduces chemicals, such as salt, into the atmosphere, which causes the clouds to break up.

    "Dire Circumstances": Aussie Wildfires Intensify After Killing Half A Billion Animals;
    Record Numbers Evacuate

The brushfires raging across Australia which have killed an estimated 480 million animals have intensified over the last 12 hours, according to NASA, causing a record number of residents evacuate as forecasters predict worsening conditions.

Authorities on Friday urged evacuations for Australians living in parts of New South Wales and Victoria to avoid brushfires which are expected to rage out of control over the weekend. Temperatures in the area topped 104 F across much of the state, and no end to the destruction is currently in sight. According to NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance, this is "the largest evacuation of people out of the region ever.

"Conditions are set to mirror or even deteriorate beyond what we saw on New Year's Eve," said the Bureau of Meteorology's Jonathan How, adding that strong and dry winds would pick up over the weekend.

In a harbinger of the searing conditions expected, a number of fires burnt out of control in South Australia as temperatures topped 40 degrees C (104 F) across much of the state and strong winds fanned flames.

Victoria declared a state of disaster across areas home to about 100,000 people, with authorities urging people to evacuate before a deterioration expected on Saturday. -Reuters

"If they value their safety they must leave," said police emergency responder Michael Grainger. "I’d suggest personal belongings are of very, very little value in these circumstances," adding "These are dire circumstances, there is no doubt."

In the southern seaside resort town of Mallacoota, over 4,000 people were forced to take refuge on the beach and in boats as an "apocalyptic" scene unfolded amid a dark orange sky.

CLIMATE CHANGE? Nearly 200 People Arrested Across Australia For Deliberately Starting Bushfires

Yet media & celebrities continue to blame “climate change.”

    https://summit.news/2020/01/06/nearly-200-people-arrested-across-australia-for-deliberately-starting-bushfires/

Authorities in Australia have arrested close to 200 people for deliberately starting the bushfires that have devastated the country, yet the media and celebrities continue to blame “climate change” for the disaster.

The fires have caused at least 18 deaths, destroyed thousands of homes, millions of hectares of land and killed hundreds of millions of animals.

A total of 183 people have been arrested by police in Queensland, NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania for lighting bushfires over the last few months, figures obtained by news agency AAP show.

Alex Jones is live on air right now breaking down how the carbon tax cult is seizing this tragedy to push for planetary government and taxation. He’s also taking calls from Aussies!

In New South Wales, 24 people were arrested for arson, risking prison sentences of up to 25 years.

In Queensland, police concluded that 103 of the fires had been deliberately lit, with 98 people, 67 of them juveniles, having been identified as the culprits.

The link between arsonists and the deadly fires that devastate Australia every summer is well known and well documented, with the rate of deliberately lit fires escalating rapidly during the school holiday period,” reports Breitbart’s Simon Kent.

Around 85 per cent of bushfires are caused by humans either deliberately or accidentally starting them, according to Dr Paul Read, co-director of the National Centre for Research in Bushfire and Arson.

“About 85 per cent are related to human activity, 13 per cent confirmed arson and 37 per cent suspected arson,” he said. “The remainder are usually due to reckless fire lighting or even just children playing with fire.”

Read also highlighted the link between school holidays and kids starting fires, commenting, “School holidays are a prime time for fire bugs, but especially over summer.” The kids have got time to get out there and light, and the most dangerous adults choose hot days.”

“Police are now working on the premise arson is to blame for much of the devastation caused this bushfire season,” reports 7 News Sydney.

New environmental policies that restrict “prescribed burning,” where land owners burn off flammable ground cover in cooler months in a controlled manner so it doesn’t contribute to bushfires, have also exacerbated the problem.

The fact that the bushfires were deliberately started and have nothing to do with man-made climate change hasn’t prevented that being the dominant narrative.

Last week, Bernie Sanders blamed those who were “delaying action on climate change” for “the blood-red sky and unbreathable air in Australia because of raging forest fires.”

Virtue signaling celebrities have also pounced on the issue to push their dogma, including at the Golden Globes last night when Australian-born Cate Blanchett asserted, “When one country faces a climate disaster, we all face a climate disaster.”

How Australia’s massive bushfires are generating thunderstorms
    https://qz.com/1779572/how-australias-massive-bushfires-are-generating-thunderstorms/

Big natural disasters can create their own weather systems. The Australian bushfires are now so intense that they’re starting to make thunderstorms. On Jan. 3, Australia’s meteorology bureau issued a severe thunderstorm warning for East Gippsland in Victoria. The thunderstorm condition is also happening in New South Wales, another state with intense fires and smoke.

Essentially, when hot air and smoke from bushfires rises and meets cool air from the atmosphere, it turns into pyrocumulus clouds, also known as “fire clouds.” These rare and dangerous clouds form fast and move quickly, creating gusty winds and thunderstorms.

The thunderstorms can lead to two atmospheric events that could quickly damage a large area: downbursts and lightning.

In the event of a downburst, the cooling wind can travel as fast as 170 miles per hour (270 km/h), knocking over fully grown trees. In the rare case when there might be water vapors in the air, it could cause a “rain bomb.” And if lightning occurs, the initial fire could spread quickly to other areas.

The pyrocumulus clouds in southeastern Australia are visible from the time-lapse video captured by satellites before the thunderstorms hit:

As global temperatures rise, pyrocumulus clouds may become more common. A similar fire-induced weather system took place during California’s wildfire season in 2018. The state’s hilly terrain created perfect conditions for not only thunderstorms, but fire tornadoes. An unprecedented number of wildfires in north Russia and the Arctic Circle in the summer of 2019, as captured by satellite images, contributed to an increase in lightning strikes in the North Pole.

Australia’s Wildfires Are So Hot, They’re Generating Thunder and Lightning
About 130 fires continue to burn across New South Wales state, with 31 more in neighboring Victoria

SYDNEY—Wildfires ravaging much of southeastern Australia burned so hot that they created their own thunderstorms and lightning—similar to conditions during a volcanic eruption or atomic bomb blast.

Firefighter Michael Brearley was leading the defense of Wingello, a small town around 100 miles south of Sydney, when a huge cloud began to form in the distance on Saturday. He knew it was bad news. The area had barely seen a drop of rain in weeks.

Anchorage: One of Alaska's most active volcanoes, a towering ice-covered cone in the Aleutian Islands, shot a cloud of ash more than 5 miles (8 km) high on Friday, triggering a warning to aviators and putting on a show that was captured in satellite imagery.

The ash burst from Shishaldin Volcano, about 670 miles (1,080 km) southwest of Anchorage, was part of an on-and-off, mostly low-level series of eruptions that began in July with a stream of lava from the crater at the peak of the 9,373-foot-tall (2,869-meter) mountain.

The ash plume was spotted by a pilot and was visible in satellite images captured from space. It drifted over the sea at least 75 miles (120 km) southeast of the volcano, the Alaska Volcano Observatory reported.

No communities were affected by ashfall or were otherwise in danger as of Friday morning, said David Fee of the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, a coordinating scientist with the observatory.

"This is a remote volcano," he said.

The National Weather Service issued an alert, and air traffic was advised to steer clear of Shishaldin, though aviators were already avoiding the volcano well before Friday because of earlier activity, Fee said.

While Friday's cloud, the largest yet of the series, was considered moderate, conditions at Shishaldin could worsen quickly.

"Shishaldin remains at a heightened level of unrest, and explosions may occur with little warning," the observatory warned in a public statement. Friday's explosion lasted about an hour to 90 minutes, U.S. Geological Survey scientist Matt Haney said.

Gale-force winds in Australia merged two enormous fires into a megablaze spanning an area four times the size of Greater London on Friday, while tens of thousands rallied to again demand action on climate change.

"The conditions are difficult today," said Shane Fitzsimmons, rural fire service commissioner for New South Wales state, after days of relative calm.

"It's the hot, dry winds that will prove once again to be the real challenge."

Temperatures soared above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in parts of New South Wales and neighbouring Victoria, where attention was focused on the two fires that linked to form yet another monster blaze of more than 600,000 hectares.

Fire service spokesman Anthony Bradstreet told AFP it is believed the blaze was sparked by dry lightning.

A "state of disaster" was extended 48 hours ahead of Friday's forecast of scorching temperatures, and evacuation orders were issued for areas around the New South Wales-Victoria border.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian said there were more than 130 fires burning in the state, with just over 50 not yet under control.

On Kangaroo Island off South Australia, the largest town was cut off as firefighters battled dangerous infernos, forcing some residents to flee to the local jetty.

The catastrophic bushfires have killed at least 26 people, destroyed more than 2,000 homes and scorched some ten million hectares (100,000 square kilometres) -- an area larger than South Korea or Portugal.

University of Sydney scientists estimate one billion mammals, birds and reptiles have been killed in the fires.

The Insurance Council of Australia estimated losses from the fires have so far totalled Aus$939 (US$645) million.

The severe conditions have been fuelled by a prolonged drought and worsened by climate change, with experts warning that such massive blazes were becoming more frequent and intense.

Australia experienced its driest and hottest year on record in 2019, with its highest average maximum temperature of 41.9 degrees Celsius recorded in mid-December.

Australia urges quarter of a million to flee as winds fan huge bushfires
    http://news.trust.org/item/20200110073105-9i8ao

Authorities sent emergency texts to 240,000 people in Victoria, telling them to evacuate, as soaring temperatures and erratic winds fanned bushfires

SYDNEY, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Australia urged nearly a quarter of a million people to evacuate their homes on Friday and prepared military backup as authorities said the next few hours could be "very, very challenging" even as rain poured down in some parts.

Defence personnel stood ready to move to bushfire grounds if conditions became extreme, Prime Minister Scott Morrison told reporters, as soaring temperatures and erratic winds create dangerous conditions.

"Even with rain in Melbourne, even with forecast better conditions next week, there is a long way to go in what has been an unprecedented fire event...and, of course, we know that we have many weeks of the fire season to run," Daniel Andrews, the premier of Victoria, told a televised briefing.

"The next few hours are going to be very, very challenging."

While the winds are expected to move through by Saturday morning, Andrews urged residents to stay on high alert and leave the community "if you are told to".

Authorities sent emergency texts to 240,000 people in Victoria, telling them to leave. People in high-risk regions in New South Wales and South Australia were also urged to think about leaving, but officials did not say how many.

Since October, 27 people have been killed and thousands subjected to repeat evacuations as huge and unpredictable fires scorched more than 10.3 million hectares (25.5 million acres) of land, an area roughly the size of South Korea.

In the coastal town of Eden in New South Wales, where the alert status was upgraded to 'watch and act' on Friday evening, smoke filled the horizon as winds blew smoke and ash.

Shereen and Kim Green, who live on a farm with three houses and 50 cattle just outside Eden, were racing to fill two 1,000-litre tanks of water.

"This is to put out the spot fires and we'll be staying up all night to defend our property," said Shereen, as the wind shook her utility vehicle. "We're taking the opportunity while we can."

Sitting under the town's watchtower, another resident Robyn Malcolm said: "If it all goes wrong, we'll dash down to the wharf and get on a tugboat."

Here are key events in the crisis:

    * Of 160 fires ablaze across New South Wales (NSW), about 46 were uncontained. Two were burning at an 'emergency level', eight blazes were in the "watch and act" category, with the rest at the "advice" level, the lowest alert rating.

    * Neighbouring Victoria had 36 fires, with more than 1.3 million hectares burnt. Nine fires were at an emergency level.

    * In the alpine region on the border of the southeastern states of Victoria and New South Wales, two fires were poised to merge and create a blaze over almost 600,000 hectares (1.5 million acres).

    * Victoria emergency services minister Lisa Neville said some communities had been provided with large containers of satellite phones, baby formula, food, nappies, and torches in case they are cut off.

    * Campaigners protested in Sydney and Melbourne on Friday as part of a wave of demonstrations planned in major world cities, to spotlight concerns about Australia's climate change policies.

    * Westpac estimated total bushfire losses to date at about A$5 billion ($3.4 billion), higher than the 2009 bushfires in Victoria but smaller than the Queensland floods in 2010/11. It forecast a hit of 0.2% to 0.5% on gross domestic product.

    * Australia's alpine resorts have dusted off winter snowmaking machines to blast ice-cold water onto dry ski slopes as fires threaten the Snowy Mountains region.

    * The Insurance Council of Australia increased its estimate of damages claims from the fires to more than A$900 million, with claims expected to jump further.

    * Health officials in New South Wales urged extra precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

    * Australia's wildfires have dwarfed other catastrophic blazes, with its burnt terrain more than twice the extent of that ravaged this year by fires in Brazil, California and Indonesia combined.

    * Of nine fires in the state of South Australia, one was categorised as an emergency.

    * Climate protests were also planned on Friday in cities such as Canberra, targeting the government's handling of the crisis and its position on climate change.

    * Prime Minister Morrison said he was considering holding a wide-ranging national inquiry into the bushfires after the immediate crisis passed.

    * Just shy of 2,000 homes have been destroyed in New South Wales, state authorities said, half during the past 10 days.

    * The Commonwealth Bank of Australia is to donate cricketer Shane Warne's prized "baggy green" cap to a museum after paying more than A$1 million for it at an auction for bushfire relief.

    * Authorities have warned that the huge fires, spurred by high temperatures, wind and a three-year drought, will persist until there is substantial rainfall. The weather agency said there was no sign of that for months.

    * Ecologists at the University of Sydney have estimated 1 billion animals have been killed or injured in the bushfires, potentially destroying ecosystems.

    * Morrison has pledged A$2 billion ($1.4 billion) to a newly created National Bushfire Recovery Agency.

    * About 100 firefighters from the United States and Canada are helping, with another 140 expected in coming weeks.

    * The fires have emitted 400 megatonnes of carbon dioxide and produced harmful pollutants, the European Union's Copernicus monitoring programme said.

    * Smoke has drifted across the Pacific, affecting cities in South America, and may have reached the Antarctic, the U.N.'s World Meteorological Organization said. ($1=1.4535 Australian dollars)

I really can't recall seeing a 90+kt low level jet core where near-surface based buoyancy is present. That is truly exceptional and a dangerous, widespread damaging wind event/QLCS is looking more and more likely.

A forecast sounding you do not want to see anytime, let alone the middle of the night. It's *imperative* that folks across the risk area have a way to receive weather information even while they are sleeping. You need to be prepared even if you don't have to act on it.

NAM 3km - 98 kts at 850 mb or ~110 mph. This max is embedded within a much larger area of 80-90 knots just above the surface. The threat for widespread wind damage and corridors of high-end wind damage is concerning to say the least.

Restive Philippine Volcano Prompts Evacuation Of Thousands Of Residents
    https://www.oann.com/restive-philippine-volcano-prompts-evacuation-of-thousands-of-residents/

    January 12, 2020

MANILA (Reuters) – A volcano south of the Philippine capital Manila spewed a giant ash plume accompanied by rumbling sounds and tremors on Sunday, prompting authorities to raise the alert level and order the evacuation of about 8,000 residents.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alert level at the rumbling Taal volcano to “level 3”, indicating “magmatic unrest” that could lead to a “hazardous eruption in weeks”. The highest alert is level 5, hoisted when magmatic eruption is underway.

In an advisory, the Institute said it was strongly recommending that people evacuate the area around the Taal volcano, which is on an island in the middle of Taal lake, and two nearby “high-risk” municipalities in Batangas province as it warned of “possible hazards of pyroclastic density currents and volcanic tsunami”.

The country’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council told reporters that an evacuation of the area has begun, led by local government officials.

The volcano spewed ash that generated a 1-km (0.6 mile) high plume that later triggered ashfall in nearby communities, the Institute said.

About 8,000 residents were at risk and needed to be immediately evacuated, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, citing the Institute’s data and recommendations.

The head of the Institute, Renato Solidum, advised communities around Taal lake to also take precautionary measures and be vigilant of possible lake water disturbances related to the volcanic activity.

Solidum said the entire island should be strictly off-limits to all residents.

The heavy ash fall also reached the province of Cavite, prompting the provincial government to suspend classes on Monday and urge residents to stay indoors.

The phreatic explosion and ash plume were visible from the nearby city of Tagaytay, a popular spot for viewing the volcano and where tourists flock during weekends.

“We were having lunch when we heard rumbling. We saw the volcano erupting. It rained and some small pebbles fell to the ground,” Jon Patrick Yen, a restaurant customer in Tagaytay, told Reuters.

“I did not expect to see such spectacle. We just went by to eat.”

Koalas are now technically extinct due to these fires...their entire habitat has been burnt..those that have been saved and are recovering, have no where to go once they are well. Billions of endemic wildlife is dead

    How many animals have died?

About half a billion animals have been affected by the fires across NSW, with millions likely dead -- and that's a conservative estimate. That number of total animals affected could be as high as one billion nationwide, according to ecologists from the University of Sydney.

The figures for NSW include birds, reptiles, and mammals, except bats. It also excludes insects and frogs, so the real sum is almost certain to be higher, the ecologists said.

Almost a third of koalas in NSW may have been killed in the fires, and a third of their habitat has been destroyed, said Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley.

Some species, like koalas, aren't in any immediate danger of extinction because they are spread out across the country, said the university ecologists. But others that live in more niche environments with lower populations, including certain types of frogs and birds, could be wiped out entirely if their habitats are hit by the fires.

These are pretty good estimates based on previous research on population density -- but until the fires stop, researchers have no way of surveying just how extensive the damage is, and exactly how many animals have died.

A powerful winter storm has unleashed tornadoes across the South, and left at least 10 people dead. Tornadoes were confirmed in Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. In the Midwest, snow and ice are making conditions downright treacherous. 150 million Americans are under weather alerts. Omar Villafranca reports An intense and dangerous severe weather system, with the potential for strong tornadoes, a paralyzing ice storm and heavy snow, will hit this weekend in parts of the central and eastern United States. Tornado warnings were issued throughout Friday for several communities in Oklahoma, Texas and southwest Missouri, and the Dallas-Fort Worth and Waco areas were under a tornado watch for part of the day.

NOAA's Storm Prediction Center has issued outlooks indicating a significant risk of severe weather for Friday night and Saturday, for areas including southern Oklahoma and the eastern half of Texas eastward through the Deep South and lower Mississippi Valley. The term "severe weather" is defined as damaging wind gusts over 58 mph and/or hail larger than an inch in diameter, the size of a quarter. This system will likely far exceed these criteria. This promises to be one of the most significant systems of the season so far.

A powerful Pacific jet stream slamming into the West Coast will dig far south into the southwestern U.S. and Mexico. This trajectory will form a trough, driving cold air southward through the Rockies, while at the same time, like a see-saw, launching warm and moist air from the Gulf of Mexico northward into the Southeast ahead of a developing storm system.

The warm air will surge as far north as New England, with temperatures in the eastern half of the U.S. catapulting 30 to 40 degrees above normal this weekend. More than 300 record warm temperatures for the date could be in jeopardy.

The threat for severe thunderstorms began Friday afternoon in a large area stretching from Oklahoma City south to Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin, Texas. On Friday night, the line will move eastward from Texas and Oklahoma into Louisiana and Arkansas, impacting cities such as Houston, Lufkin, Texarkana, Shreveport and Little Rock. As it does so, a strong low-level jet stream of up to 100 mph will maximize. As this happens, the main threat from the storm system will transition from tornadoes early in the night to a greater proportion of straight-line wind damage by morning.

It should be noted that this time of year, severe weather and large tornadoes are most common in this specific region. Tornadoes in this region often occur at night when people are less prepared, and as a result are twice as likely to be deadly.

Saturday morning the threat will move east towards Paducah, Kentucky, to Memphis, Tennessee, and Jackson, Mississippi, to the Gulf Coast. Any severe storm may tap into the 100 mph low-level jet stream aloft and bring those gusts down to the ground. Therefore, this squall line may be particularly damaging.

Earth Changes from September 2017 - to present / Biblical Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Floods, Volcanic Activity, Fires, Snow Ice Storms - Page 16 Radar-fri-night-copy

By Saturday afternoon and evening the severe line of thunderstorms will be moving eastward through Tennessee, Mississippi, southeast Louisiana and Alabama. Cities from Nashville to Birmingham, Alabama, to New Orleans will experience brief but powerful storms.

North of the threat for severe weather, in the mid-Mississippi, Tennessee and Ohio Valleys, very heavy and prolonged rain will saturate the ground. Widespread flooding is possible as 3 to 5 inches of rainfall piles up between Friday and Saturday.

On the northwest side of the system, a potentially paralyzing ice storm will develop. Some areas may receive more than inch of freezing rain accumulation. The highest-risk zone spans from northern Missouri to northern Illinois near Chicago and into central Michigan. This will cause power outages and treacherous travel.

Earth Changes from September 2017 - to present / Biblical Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Floods, Volcanic Activity, Fires, Snow Ice Storms - Page 16 Warm-air

    CBS NEWS
North of the ice, stretching from Milwaukee and Green Bay, Wisconsin, to northern Michigan, heavy snow will bury residents under a blanket of 1 to 2 feet.

Meanwhile east of the storm, it will feel much more like spring than winter. This is part of the fuel for this multifaceted system. Boston will surge into the 60s, while Washington, D.C. may crack 70 degrees.

Biblical prophecy 'fulfilled' as floodwater 'flows from Jerusalem into Dead Sea'
    https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/weird-news/biblical-prophecy-fulfilled-floodwater-flows-21269525

Some have bizarrely claimed that a Bible prophecy in the Book of Ezekiel – one of the major prophetic books in the Old Testament – has been fulfilled after footage emerged of floodwater appearing to flow eastwards from Jerusalem towards the Dead Sea. A Bible prophecy has allegedly been “fulfilled” after an astonishing video showed rivers appearing to flow from Jerusalem towards the Dead Sea – leading to the bizarre claim.

Record-breaking volumes of rain have fallen across Israel, with more than 40cm of rain falling north of Jerusalem in what has broken a 51-year-old record.

Deadly flash floods across the nation have already claimed the lives of a young couple in Tel Aviv.

But a new terrifying video showing a torrent of water appearing and flooding a road has led some to sensationally claim a biblical prophecy is being fulfilled.

The video is said to be taken near the Arugot River (roughly 18 miles of south of Jersualem).

Stunned witnesses stop in their tracks and a car that was about to drive across the road is forced to a halt.

The river then rushes eastwards, towards the Dead Sea, and disappears from sight beneath the crest of the hill.

Breaking Israel News picked up on the video and has linked it to biblical passages in Ezekiel and Genesis.

According to the Bible, the valley where the Dead Sea is now was originally a "well-watered" land before it was destroyed along with Sodom and Gomorrah.

In Genesis 13:10, it states: “…Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of the Jordan, that it was well-watered everywhere before Hashem destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah…”

The religious news outlet then draws attention to a prophecy in Ezekiel 47:8-9 which the “eastern region” will one day be transformed.

The passage reads: “Then said he unto me: ‘These waters issue forth toward the eastern region and shall go down into the Arabah (a barren basin close to the Dead Sea) and when they shall enter into the sea of the putrid waters the waters shall be healed.

Unknown Burst of Gravitational Waves Just Lit Up Earths Detectors Observatory (LIGO) and Virgo detectors recorded an unknown or unanticipated “burst” of gravitational waves on Jan. 14. Gravitational waves we’ve detected so far usually relate to extreme cosmic events, like two black holes colliding or neutron stars finally merging after being caught in a death spiral.

Burst gravitational waves have not been detected before and scientists hypothesize they may be linked to phenomena such as supernova or gamma ray bursts, producing a tiny “pop” when detected by the observatories.

Plane slides off taxiway at Kansas City airport in icy weather as massive winter storm hits the Midwest on the way to the Northeast and New York City - putting 90 MILLION people under a weather alert
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7899751/Plane-slides-taxiway-icy-weather-winter-storm-hits.html

A plane slid off the taxiway at an airport on Friday due to icy conditions that also have closed schools, universities and government offices as a sprawling winter storm hits large sections of the Midwest and beyond.

The Delta Air Lines A319 was taxiing from the terminal at Kansas City International Airport when the nose wheel dropped off the taxiway pavement, reported KMBC-TV.

Airport spokesman Joe McBride told the station that the passengers and crew were all safely returned to the terminal and there were no injuries.

The closures come after the National Weather Service (NWS) issued winter weather advisories, saying the storm will create hazardous travel conditions from the Plains into the Northeast through the weekend, putting as many as 90 million people under a weather alert.

Snow is forecast over much of the Great Lakes, with a blizzard warning for parts of the Upper Midwest, before the storm travels to New York City.

The Big Apple is expected to get between one and three inches of snow, while upstate and New England are looking at anywhere from three to six inches.

A winter storm that brought snow and sleet to the Midwest and Plains created travel headaches Saturday after airlines canceled flights and officials shut down major roads.

The storm system began moving through the Plains and Midwest on Friday, leading to trouble at airports in Chicago and Kansas City. It spread to the Northeast by Saturday evening.

In Newfoundland, the Arctic blast buried cars and left thousands without power. The storm dumped as much as 76.2 cm (30 inches) of snow on capital St. John's, forcing businesses and the international airport to close.

Commenting on the scale of the blizzard, Natural Resources Minister Seamus O'Regan said: 'It's snow and a hurricane, and snow and a hurricane shuts down a city.'

Further south, blizzard conditions with powerful winds were reported in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa.

Officials in South Dakota shut down most of Intestate 29 and a 72-mile portion of Interstate 90 Friday night. Both highways were open by Saturday afternoon, although no traffic was advised to travel on those roads.

Most of I-29 in North Dakota and a 200-milestretch of I-94 remained closed. Farther west in Wyoming, officials closed down stretches of Interstate 80 due to the weather and as a precaution against travelers becoming stranded without services.

The danger on the roads was highlighted by dashcam video recorded from a delivery truck and made public by the Iowa State Patrol. The video shows a state trooper and a person who had been involved in a crash along Interstate 80 near Council Bluffs in western Iowa on Friday looking at the damage when another truck loses control on the slick interstate and barrels into the crash scene, barely missing the trooper and other man.

'Bomb' blizzard buried cars and homes with more than four metres of snow in parts of Canada
    https://www.stuff.co.nz/world/americas/118904753/bomb-blizzard-buried-cars-and-homes-with-more-than-12-feet-of-snow-in-parts-of-canada

A historic blizzard that slammed Canada's easternmost province has left snow-buried neighbourhoods, a slew of power outages and shattered records in its wake.

The Canadian city of St John's superseded its record for the most snow in 24 hours, recording 30 inches, as the storm hit Newfoundland and Labrador on Friday.

A state of emergency continued in the provincial capital and elsewhere through Sunday local time, as most businesses were ordered closed and few beyond emergency vehicles were allowed on the roads.

Snow drifts rose 12 to 15 feet (3.7 to 4.6 metres) high on some highways, officials said. The Canadian armed forces were called in to help clear the deluge.

"Newfoundlanders are going to be talking about this for a very, very long time," said Ashley Brauweiler, a meteorologist for the Canadian Broadcasting Corp in the province.

Her station lost power during the storm and had to stop broadcasting. At one point, people there couldn't even open the door because of the snow that had piled up on the other side.

St John's International Airport measured 30 inches of snowfall Friday, its snowiest single day in records dating to 1942. The previous record of 26.9 inches was set in April 1999. Totals in other areas were higher, and wind speeds of 100 mph or greater made it difficult to measure the snow amid blowing and drifting

Hurricane-force winds piled snow against homes, and residents woke Saturday to drifts that completely covered their cars and blocked first floors.

The storm was a meteorological "bomb," having undergone a process of rapid intensification known as bombogenesis.

While the storm was relatively short in duration, it was unusually ferocious even for an area used to powerful ocean storms during the winter - "as severe a blizzard as St. John's metro has ever seen," tweeted one meteorologist, the Weather Network's Chris Scott, who placed the tempest "in an elite class with some of the most infamous nor'easter/Atlantic seaboard storms ever."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his thoughts were with those in Newfoundland "dealing with the aftermath."

"Stay safe out there and listen to your local authorities," Trudeau tweeted. "We're here for you and stand ready to help in any way we can."

Brauweiler, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. meteorologist who lives in St. John's, said she came home to no snow in her front yard, thanks to the wind. But the back door was a different story - there, it had piled as high as her head. Houses across the street had snow up to their second level.

She can't shovel, she said: Her neighborhood has no sidewalks, so "there's physically no place to put the snow."

Brauweiler is a forecasting veteran, but "when you actually experience it, it's something completely different," she said.

And this was no ordinary storm.

"It is certainly something that I'll be talking about for the rest of my career," she said. "I've never seen anything like it."

A Plague Of Locusts, Earthquakes In Diverse Places, And Weather That's Gone Completely Nuts
    https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/plague-locusts-earthquakes-diverse-places-and-weather-thats-gone-completely-nuts

It is almost as if someone flipped some sort of a switch as 2020 began...

Later in this article I want to talk about the large earthquakes and strange weather events that we have seen over the past few days, but first I want to discuss the massive armies of locusts that are voraciously eating crops in Asia and in Africa. Right now, a “deadly invasion by millions and millions of locusts” in India is absolutely devastating farm after farm, and the media in India is calling this locust invasion “the worst in over six decades”…

Parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan are in the midst of a deadly invasion by millions and millions of locusts, leaving the farmers there in distress. The invasion which began in October is said to be the worst in over six decades.

According to reports, crops of some 3.6 lakh hectares in 10 districts as western Rajasthan have been damaged by the locusts so far. The Locust Warning Organization (LWO) said that the current wave of attack was by Pink locusts which are flying in from Pakistan.

As bad as things are in India, the truth is that they are even worse in Africa.

According to the UN, the desert locusts that have been ravaging fields in Ethiopia and Somalia are now pouring into Kenya…

The UN has warned of a “significant and extremely dangerous” escalation in the number of desert locusts descending on Kenya, as the government strives to contain the threat before it reaches the country’s food-producing regions.

The tropical grasshoppers have been wreaking havoc on Kenya’s neighbours to the north and east, devouring tens of thousands of hectares of crops in Ethiopia and Somalia since last June.

Here in the United States, we tend to think of a “swarm” as a few hundred insects.

But over in Africa, these “swarms” can literally take over an entire section of a country. For example, the FAO says that one of the locust swarms in Kenya “measured 2,400 sq km”…

Each square kilometre of locusts in a swarm can eat as much in a day as 35,000 people, according to the FAO. One locust swarm seen in Kenya measured 2,400 sq km.

“There is an unprecedented threat to food security and livelihoods” across the Horn of Africa, the FAO said.

I can’t even imagine what a 2,400 square kilometer locust army would look like, but I think that it is fair to say that it qualifies as a “plague of locusts”.

Meanwhile, earthquakes continue to pop up in unusual places.

For example, ABC News is reporting that a magnitude 4.5 quake hit Kansas on Sunday…

The U.S. Geological Survey said a magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck about 2 miles (3 kilometers) southwest of Hutchinson shortly after 1 p.m. The service had initially reported that it was a magnitude 4.4 earthquake, but later upgraded it.

And this earthquake comes just a few months after there was a very suspicious swarm of 17 earthquakes in that same area of central Kansas…

The earthquake struck as the Kansas Corporation Commission investigates the cause of a swarm of 17 earthquakes in five days in August the same area of central Kansas. The regulatory agency’s investigation is focused on the underground disposal of oilfield waste that’s been blamed for quakes elsewhere in southern Kansas.

On the other side of the globe, a very strong magnitude 6.0 earthquake hit Indonesia this weekend…

A strong inland earthquake has struck Indonesia’s easternmost Papua province, but there were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude 6.0 quake was centered 141 kilometers west of Abepura, a city at a depth of 33.6 kilometers.

But these days large earthquakes are happening so frequently that they barely make a blip in the news. A similarly large earthquake just hit China, but hardly anyone in the U.S. even knows that it happened…

According to reports, A powerful magnitude 6.4 earthquake has struck in Jiashi County of northwest China’s autonomous Xinjiang. The earthquake was reported to have a depth of 165m and took place at 9:21 pm local time.

Witnesses say the shaking was felt in the cities of Kashgar and Artux. At this time there are no reports of fatalities or damage. This is the third earthquake that has struck in Southern Xinjiang, China in the past 47 hours.

That quake in China was later downgraded to a magnitude 6.0 event, but that is still very significant.

In some parts of the planet, the shaking simply does not stop. Over in the Philippines, there have been more than 400 earthquakes associated with the eruption of Taal volcano since last Sunday…

Since Sunday, a staggering 466 earthquakes have been recorded, and experts warn more eruptions may still come.

Of those quakes, 156 were recorded as being intensity one to four.

Phivolcs Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division chief Mariton Bornas said: “For volcanic earthquakes, that is strong.”

And as I have written about previously, more than 1,000 earthquakes have shaken Puerto Rico in recent weeks. Many residents continue to sleep outside because they are deathly afraid that their homes will collapse on top of them while they are sleeping if another big quake suddenly strikes.

On top of everything else, global weather patterns continue to go haywire.

In Alberta, the weather has actually been colder than it has been on Mars…

The highest temperature recorded on the red planet Wednesday morning was -17 C, according to NASA, which was still a few degrees above Alberta, where the warmest temperature recorded was –21.2 C, at Nakiska Ridge in Kananaskis Country.

In Calgary, it reached a low of –31.2 C early Wednesday, according to Environment Canada, while in Edmonton the mercury dipped to –34 C.

And along with Mars, Alberta was colder than a number of other well-known spots, like Siberia, which sat at –11 C Wednesday morning, and Nuuk, Greenland, where it was –12 C.

And in Newfoundland, a devastating blizzard packing wind speeds of up to 98 mph dumped an all-time record 30 inches of snow on St. John’s…

Premier Dwight Ball said he had asked for the federal government’s assistance, including mobilizing the armed forces, after the blizzard battered eastern Newfoundland.

Rob Carroll, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, said St. John’s had experienced a one-day snowfall of 76.2 centimeters (30 inches), breaking the previous record of 68.4 centimeters (27 inches) on April 5, 1999.

On an almost daily basis, we are seeing natural disasters happen that are unlike anything we have ever seen before, and what we have witnessed so far is just the beginning.

Despite all of our advanced technology, we remain exceedingly dependent on the natural environment that surrounds us, and that natural environment is becoming increasingly unstable.

We are truly entering uncharted territory, and most people cannot even imagine the great challenges that lie ahead for all of us.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7915289/Ice-snow-falling-IGUANAS-forecast-Miami-temperatures-plunge-record-cold.html

Ice…snow… and frozen IGUANAS falling from trees are forecast for Miami as temperatures plunge to record cold

The National Weather Service in Miami issued its forecast for falling iguanas on Tuesday. It said the tendency for the reptile to go a into an immobile, dormant state could risk them falling from trees.

States across the Southern and Eastern United States are facing freezing temperatures with icy winds, frost, snow and...iguanas expected to fall from trees.

The unusual reptilian addition to the usual list of wintry weather elements was issued in Miami, southern Florida, - home to a booming iguana population.

The National Weather Service in Miami issued its forecast for iguanas on Twitter. 'Don't be surprised if you see iguanas falling from the trees tonight,' it tweeted.

The weather forecaster said because iguanas were cold-blooded they slowed down, or became immobile when temperatures dropped below 45F.

As a result the iguanas appear to fall from the sky, onto streets, cars, pools, or even people walking around.

This poses a risk to people and property as iguanas are not small creatures. The adult male can grow up to 5 feet in length and weigh up to 20 pounds.

The reptilian creature, which is native to parts of Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean, generally does not handle cold very well.
