'Biblical' Locust Plague With Mega-Swarms The Size Of Cities Descends On East Africa
    https://www.zerohedge.com/health/biblical-locust-plague-worst-mega-swarms-70-years-devastate-east-africa

"The hum of millions of locusts on the move is broken by the screams of farmers and the clanging of pots and pans," the AP reports. The by all accounts "huge" infestation is threatening to devastate communities and a region already long struggling with food security. One news source likened it to a Biblical Locust Plague With Swarms the Size of Cities.

The invading locusts are "deadly" in the sense that these 'mega-swarms' devour crops at incredibly rapid pace — at a faster rate of destruction than other natural disasters.

The numbers and immediate destructive force are staggering, according to quotes in the AP:

About 70,000 hectares (172,973 acres) of land in Kenya are already infested.

A single swarm can contain up to 150 million locusts per square kilometer of farmland, an area the size of almost 250 football fields, regional authorities say.

One especially large swarm in northeastern Kenya measured 60 kilometers long by 40 kilometers wide (37 miles long by 25 miles wide).

Farmers are afraid to let their cattle out for grazing, and their crops of millet, sorghum and maize are vulnerable, but there is little they can do.

“Even cows are wondering what is happening,” one local farmer laments in the AP report. “Corn, sorghum, cowpeas, they have eaten everything.”

This as the mega-swarms consume the very fodder the livestock survive on.

There's additional concern that new rains after March could bring another explosion of the fast breeding locusts prior to the dry season taking their numbers back down.

The UN Food and Agricultural Organization is reportedly mobilizing an emergency response, given even small swarms can wipe out crop fields at sizes constituting enough food that could have fed tens of thousands of people in a single day, which makes it a humanitarian disaster in the making.

It's both the nature of their small size (about a finger's length) and the fact that they swarm in millions at a time that make preventative measures nearly impossible.

Earth Changes from September 2017 - to present / Biblical Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Floods, Volcanic Activity, Fires, Snow Ice Storms - Page 17 Locustskenya2

The UN agency listed some creative but futile methods suggested and/or initiated in the past: “Although giant nets, flamethrowers, lasers and huge vacuums have been proposed in the past, these are not in use for locust control.”

It added, “People and birds often eat locusts but usually not enough to significantly reduce population levels over large areas.”

Earth Changes from September 2017 - to present / Biblical Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Floods, Volcanic Activity, Fires, Snow Ice Storms - Page 17 Snowsupermoon_1024
This Weekend We Might See a 'Snow Supermoon'. Here's What That Means
    https://www.sciencealert.com/a-full-snow-moon-is-rising-soon-and-some-say-it-s-also-a-supermoon

A full snow moon will be visible in the sky this weekend, but experts disagree about whether or not it's a supermoon.

It will be one of the biggest full moons this year, since the Moon is nearing the closest point to Earth in its orbit. But there's no official definition for a supermoon. Astrologer Richard Nolle, who coined the term, and TimeandDate.com say that this is not a supermoon.

    Astronomer Fred Espenak disagrees, however.

A snow moon is simply the name for the full moon that falls in the month of February. This particular snow moon will hang in the sky Friday evening through Monday morning, though it will appear largest at 02.33 ET (07.33 UTC).

Across North America and Europe, people have used full moons to track months and seasons for thousands of years, naming each one based on the seasonal changes it indicates.

The names assigned to full moons are often attributed to the native Algonquian peoples, who share a family of languages and originate from the area that today ranges from New England as far west as Lake Superior.

Colonial settlers across North America adopted their own version of the indigenous names, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac.

Different languages and cultures characterized the Moon differently, sometimes based on agricultural cycles, sometimes on natural phenomena. Here are some of the many names assigned to full moons throughout the year.

Some full moons are called supermoons or micromoons. The contemporary terms refer to how large and small the moon looks at various points in its elliptical orbit.

Supermoons occur is when the Moon is at perigee - its closest point to Earth. They can cause stronger ocean tides and weather events.

Micromoons are the opposite, occurring at apogee - when the Moon is furthest from Earth. They can reduce the variation in spring tides by 2 inches (5 centimetres).

Micromoons appear about 14 percent smaller than supermoons, and sometimes seem dimmer, since the area illuminated by the Sun appears 30 percent smaller, according to TimeandDate.com.

Since the International Astronomical Union (IAU) has not officially defined supermoons or micromoons, astronomers disagree on which full moons get the designation.

The next full supermoon: 9 February 2020 (according to astrophysicist Fred Espeenak)

The next full micromoon: 1 October 2020

Blue moons, meanwhile, are like special bonuses. They occur every two or three years, when a month or season has one extra full moon.

When an astronomical season (the time between solstice and equinox) has four full moons instead of the normal three, the third one is a seasonal blue moon.

When a calendar month has two full moons, the second one is a monthly blue moon. That happens because the lunar month is only 29 days long, while the Gregorian calendar month is usually 30 or 31 days long.

The Moon doesn't actually appear blue on these special occasions. That would only happen if dust or smoke particles of a particular size cloud the atmosphere, say after a forest fire, volcanic eruption, or dust storm.

The next seasonal blue moon: 22 August 2021

The next monthly blue moon: 31 October 2020

    February: Snow moon, hunger moon

In North America, February marks the depths of winter, when snow blankets the ground and fresh food was traditionally harder to come by. Because it's a shorter month, some Februarys don't have a full moon at all.

The next one: 9 February 2020

March: Worm moon, sap moon, crow moon

As spring approaches, earthworms emerge from the ground, maple trees are ripe for tapping, and crows' caw to herald the end of winter. European settlers with religious calendars called this the Lenten moon.

The next one: 9 March 2020

April: Pink moon, sprouting grass moon, egg moon, fish moon

The pink moon is named for the pink phlox flowers that bloom in spring. The other names refer to more staples of the changing season: growing grass, birds filling nests with eggs, and fish that swim upstream to spawn.

The next one: 7 April 2020

    May: Flower moon, planting moon

In May, flowers burst fully into bloom and it becomes time to sow crops again.

The next one: 7 May 2020

June: Strawberry moon, rose moon, hot moon

Strawberries ripen for picking in June. Europeans dubbed this the rose moon, and other cultures called it the hot moon because it harkens summer heat ahead.

The next one: 5 June 2020

July: Buck moon, thunder moon, hay moon

Deer grow new, velvety antlers in July, and thunderstorms rage aplenty in some parts of North America. For Anglo-Saxons, July was all about hay.

The next one: 5 July 2020

    August: Sturgeon moon, red moon

Tribes near the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain knew August was the best time to catch sturgeon, an enormous, hearty fish. Some people also think the Moon appears more reddish in color this month because of the heat.

The next one: 3 August 2020

September: Harvest moon, corn moon, barley moon

Over the millennia, September's full moon has signified to farmers that it's time to finish harvesting corn and other crops. A harvest moon sometimes occurs in October (the Moon doesn't follow the Gregorian calendar), but it's always the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox.

Because the harvest moon rises with the setting Sun, it looks larger than usual. These bright moonlit nights give farmers a little extra time to harvest their crops.

The next ones: 2 September 2020

October: Hunter's moon, blood moon, dying grass moon, travel moon

These names refer to the time of year when leaves have fallen, the deer are fat, and animals are coming into harvested fields to eat what's left. Historically, hunters took advantage of October to store meat for the winter.

The next one: 1 October 2020

    November: Beaver moon, frosty moon

Beavers preparing for winter in November, as do trappers. This Moon signaled the time to catch beavers and secure a supply of warm furs before the swamps froze.

The next one: 30 November 2020

December: Cold moon, long night's moon

December has the longest, darkest nights of the year, and the Moon sits above the horizon longer than usual. Some Europeans and their descendants in North America also called the December full moon the "Moon before Yule."

The next one: 29 December 2020

January: Wolf moon, old moon, ice moon

In mid-winter, as the story goes, hungry wolves would gather outside villages in North America and medieval Europe, and howl into the night. This full moon was sometimes also called the "Moon after Yule."

First the fires and now the floods come. This is happening in NSW and Queensland and the rain band is on its way to Victoria. Neutral

‘Prepare to leave’: Flood evacuation orders as Sydney slammed by wettest weekend since 1998

Thousands of Aussies are facing days without power after horror storms, labelled as “Mother Nature at her worst”, lashed parts of the country.

Many areas of the east coast are struggling to deal with the power of the floods, causing damage and evacuations to many parts of NSW and QLD.
The Bureau of Meteorology says severe weather conditions are forecast again today with heavy rains, strong winds and damaging surf possible along NSW's entire coast with the system forecast to move down to Victoria.

Less than two months after communities were told to leave their homes to escape raging bushfires, those same locals are now packing bags to flee rising flood waters.

I imagine Sanicle you and Rochelle are not concerned by the recent evacuation measures. You would have told us.
    May you both remain safe.
My Heart goes to the many in Australia and worlwide that are victims of this extreme weather and need to leave their homes.
I always wonder what occurs next to these people, those that lost everything with no possibity to return to their homes. Thats quite a big amount of people when one adds these victims of natural disasters worlwide. Where do they go ? Sometimes they may even have lost all their papers We never hear of these. At least not that I know.

Have you heard anything Sanicle of what happens to all these people that are forced to evacuate there in Australia ?

No, thus far in Melbourne we have been very lucky.  The floods and fires are quite a distance from us and the weather is generally more stable than it has been elsewhere.  Let's hope it continues that way.

As regards those who are caught up in the fires and floods they are generally relatively well looked after.  The emergency services people set up evacuation shelters for those who don't have friends or relatives to go to which are manned by people like the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the Country Women's Association and other volunteers to provide them with food and bedding.  The Army was also called in during the worst of the fires to set up tents for those who had lost homes to live in until something better could be sorted out with people on hand to feed them, etc.  Psychological help is also available.

Millions of dollars were raised, and is still being raised in various ways, to help the victims (including the animals, thank god) and of course the government has various hand-outs available to them as well.  From what I've seen, when the news groups check in on them, and they still do, all those who have no homes to go to look healthy and well dressed.  Although a few of those victims still seem to demand more.  Bored The Insurance companies seem to be working quickly in their assessments, etc also. For those without insurance getting back on their feet obviously takes a lot longer but there are systems put in place to help them also.

So it could be a lot worse.  People don't seem to 'fall through the cracks' as much as they probably did in the past now the Internet is available to let the rest of us know what's really going on.   Wink  Cheerful

These are comforting news Sanicle. When people team up and help one another the Heart rejoices and mountains can be moved.

I wish for your country relief from the hardship it endures. Too many lands, animals and the people that lived there have suffered.

It is engrained in the collective mind though that we are in for stressfull times, here that we are in the biblical end times and there on a more scientific mode climate change. What men hold in their minds and activate with their fear and emotions plays out in the physical realm.

It doesn't need to be this way nor is there a need to fall prey to this.
You stay safe my friend and keep the good vibes up. Hugs

    Love for You

Mexican volcano erupts, spewing columns of gas and rocks
    VIDEO: https://www.skynews.com.au/details/_6133017225001
    17/02/2020|1min
One of Mexico’s most active volcanoes erupts, spewing large columns of gas and rocks 1200 metres into the air. A similar image was seen with more lava and ash when it erupted again a day later. The volcano is the second largest mountain in Mexico and the fifth tallest in North America.

Friday, 10 Jan 2020 - Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano erupted early yesterday morning, with a dramatic show of lava and rocks spewing from the crater rim and a column of smoke and ash rising into the sky.

According to reports, the explosion occurred at 6.33am (12.33pm Irish time) and a massive column of gas and ash was sent 3,000m above the volcano's crater.

Mexican Civil Defense flagged a yellow volcanic alert and urged people not to be close to the foothills of the volcano.

At 5,426m tall, Popocatepetl is the second-highest mountain in Mexico and the fifth-highest in North America.

El Popo, as it is affectionately known locally, is one of Mexico's most active volcanoes.

What do you think would be the ultimate danger to human life on Earth?

Well what ever it is your memory is suggesting to you, you probably got it wrong.

    This is the ultimate doom:
    https://www.sciencealert.com/watch-wtf-is-going-on-with-this-object-spinning-in-zero-gravity

If ever there was a symbol for what astronauts put themselves through in the name of science, it would be this crazy spinning T-handle. Up there in the zero-gravity environment of the International Space Station (ISS), everything happens according to a completely different set of rules, and the things you take for granted on Earth suddenly no longer apply. For example, in zero gravity, your sweat doesn't evaporate, there's a constant concern that your eyeballs might be going flat, and carbonated beverages hurt because it's physically impossible to burp out all that extra gas. But as that T-handle so elegantly demonstrates, we can learn so much from what's going on.

Found recently by Digg, the video above shows an astronaut spinning a T-handle in the SpaceDRUMS (Space Dynamically Responding Ultrasonic Matrix System) facility aboard the ISS, and as they so delicately point out, "You thought things in space pretty much follow the rule 'go in one direction forever' right? Well it turns out you are wrong and not a physicist."

For those of us who aren't physicists, what's going on here? Our friend Henry Reich from MinutePhysics actually discusses it in the video below, when he was lucky enough to ask astronaut Scott Kelly to demonstrate it using a Leatherman tool. He calls it the "instability of rotation around the intermediate axis of an object," and explains that if you rotate an object around its largest and smallest axes, it will spin in a stable, consistent manner.

But if you rotate it on an intermediate axis (watch the video below to see what he means), the rotation is unstable. The object will flip back and forth in orientation as it spins, because it's trying to spin itself on the more stable large or small axes instead. The only difference between how this works on Earth and in zero gravity is that in space, you can actually see the results of this instability without the help of slow-motion footage.

The video included for the ones without patience.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1n-HMSCDYtM
    Dancing T-handle in zero-g, HD

Stop thinking the Earth will always spin in the same direction.

If the Earth does this trick, the massive part will change rotation within a day...as if it is normal.
The oceans however flow freely and their inertia will force them to continue to do that as long as possible.
The oceans will overflow every continent, unannounced.

    There is your ultimate doom.

The big freeze! Homes in New York become 'IGLOOS' and trap residents inside
after strong winds blow water off Lake Erie and turns to ice as temperatures plunge to 21f

An icy blast and blizzard over the weekend froze over a Hoover Beach neighborhood on Lake Erie in Hamburg, New York, leaving residents trapped in their homes covered in three inches of ice. Shocking photographs show homes and trees completed iced over with long icicles dangling from doors and windows. The area was hit with a blizzard over the weekend that brought snow, freezing 21F temperatures, 47mph gust winds and 10-foot waves. One resident said he had to chisel his way out of his home. This is the sixth storm in a matter of months to batter the area as residents demand Hoover Beach officials build a breakwall to protect from further property damage.

An icy blast and blizzard in the East Coast has frozen over a Lake Erie neighborhood in New York, transforming homes into igloos and the water into an ice sheet.

Homes in Hamburg, New York were completely covered in ice over the weekend, with icicles hanging down from doors and windows, leaving some homes completely in the dark due to frosted windows.

Shocking photographs show homes and trees on Hoover Beach, just in front of the lake, covered in thick muddied snow and ice.

The damage was so extreme that some residents had to force their way out of the house as the ice covering their homes was between one to three inches thick.

This is the sixth storm in a matter of months to batter the area as residents are demanding the city build a breakwall to protect their homes from further weather-related damage

'I actually had to go out a secondary door and then chisel my way back into the house by breaking the ice,' Hoover Beach resident Ed Mis said to ABC10.

A brief, but intense episode of explosive activity took place at Etna's SE crater this morning. Starting in the early morning hours, from around 07:30 local time, the New Southeast Crater began to produce strombolian-type explosions along with a sharp increase in volcanic tremor.
Activity rapidly increased in intensity, producing a weak lava fountain and an ash column that rose approx. 1 km. Incandescent lava covered most of the New SE crater, but no lava flow was produced.

So now we have a total of 42 volcanoes active in and around the Pacific ring of fire. https://volcano.si.edu/gvp_currenteruptions.cfm

Tornadoes erupt across south-central US, killing at least 6 and causing significant damage
    https://www.accuweather.com/en/severe-weather/tornado-strikes-madill-oklahoma-wednesday-afternoon/727026
By Brian Lada, AccuWeather meteorologist and staff writer
    Updated Apr. 23, 2020 5:37 AM

After a tornado tore through Madill, Oklahoma, on April 22, residents of the town did what they could despite rampant power outages. Bill Wadell has the details.

Explosive weather erupted across parts of the nation’s heartland Wednesday afternoon, spawning tornadoes that turned deadly in Oklahoma. The severe weather stretched into the overnight hours as tornadoes were reported in Texas and Louisiana as well.

Madill, Oklahoma, was hit by one of numerous tornadoes in the southern Plains on Wednesday amid the severe weather outbreak. The city, situated in southern Oklahoma about 100 miles north of Dallas, Texas, sustained significant damage, and Marshall County officials, according to KXII TV, blamed at least two deaths on tornadoes that struck the area.

The severe thunderstorms developed south of Oklahoma City right along Interstate 35, igniting just a few hours after a hailstorm hammered the state’s capital.

This screenshot of the weather radar on Wednesday afternoon shows four severe thunderstorms south of Oklahoma City. At one point, four of them were capable of spinning up tornadoes. (AccuWeather)
The first tornado was reported near Springer, Oklahoma, before tracking east. Not long after, around 5 p.m. CDT, another twister touched down and tracked directly through Madill, crossing Highway 377 in the process.

One storm chaser in the area managed to snap a photo of the tornado just as it crossed the path of a rainbow near Madill.

Prior to Wednesday, there had only been four tornadoes reported in Oklahoma all year, according to the Storm Prediction Center (SPC).

Shortly after the deadly tornado hit Madill, a large tornado was reported in Polk County, Texas, near the towns of Onalaska and Seven Oaks. Reports said multiple people were trapped and injured after 30 to 40 mobile homes were damaged following the tornado. Other buildings were damaged and large trees blocked roads as well as overturned semis.

Polk County Emergency Management confirmed 20-30 injuries and at least three deaths as of early Thursday morning, with search and rescue efforts ongoing.

Severe damage was also reported in Jasper, Texas, after a possible tornado touched down in the early evening hours on Wednesday.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement that local and government agencies are working to provide immediate support to those affected by the tornadoes.

"Our hearts are with our fellow Texans tonight and the state will continue to do everything it can to support those affected by this severe weather," Abbott said.

There were multiple tornado emergencies on Wednesday night as the severe storms shifted eastward. The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed a large and extremely dangerous tornado 7 miles south of Alexandria, Louisiana, before 10 p.m. CDT. This storm remained tornado-warned as it neared the Louisiana-Mississippi border over 30 minutes later.

Officials confirmed the death of a woman in Woodworth, Louisiana, in connection to the storms, the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office told KALB.com.

Law enforcement reported that there was significant damage to buildings on the campus of Louisiana State University of Alexandria, which is located about 10 miles south of downtown Alexandria. The university stated on Twitter that all resident students were unharmed.

#update on campus. All resident students safe. There is damage to DeWitt Livestock building and a camper flipped over. The Oaks and students are ok, but no power on campus.
    — LSUA (@LSUAlexandria) April 23, 2020

The SPC has recorded 26 preliminary tornadoes from Wednesday and Wednesday night. This number may change as storm surveys are completed in the days ahead.

Baseball-sized hail also battered the region. Hailstones this large can easily dent cars and break windshields.

The threat for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes will shift eastward on Thursday across the southeastern U.S.
