There will be an election coming up in Ukraine May 25th...former Ukrainian PM Yulia Tymoshenko is one of the candidates for the upcoming presidential election. If she wins, the "push" for war is assured with/or without help from the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, Victoria Nuland.

Ukrainian presidential candidate calls for obliteration of Russia

Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko in a leaked phone call has called for Ukrainians to take up arms against Russia and wants to "use every means to rile up the entire world so that there is not even a scorched field left of Russia." The presidential candidate in the upcoming May elections also allegedly called for the use of nuclear weapons against the eight million Russians in Ukraine, although she says that this portion of the call was edited. The leak of the phone conversation comes amidst news that radical Right Sector leader Oleksandr Muzychko was killed in a gun fight with police. A controversial far-right nationalist, Muzychko has been the focus of scrutiny over allegations of a growing Neo-Nazi and fascist presence in Ukraine. RT's Alexey Yaroshevsky reports on both of these developing stories.

IMF “Shock Treatment” for Ukraine: Collapse of the Standard of Living

On March 27, Ukraine’s interim coalition government announced concrete policy measures as part of its agreement with the IMF: a 50 percent increase of the retail price of gas coupled with the deregulation of the foreign exchange market.

The hike in gas prices is required by the IMF as part of an 18 Billion dollar pledge, which was approved on March 27. The IMF has demanded that retail gas and heating tariffs be raised “to full cost recovery.”

It is worth recalling that following the instatement of a coalition government on February 23, the interim (puppet) prime minister Arseny Yatsenyuk casually dismissed the need to negotiate with the IMF.

Yatsenyk intimated that Ukraine will “accept whatever offer the IMF and the EU made” (voice of russia.com March 21, 2014)

Prior to the conduct of negotiations pertaining to a draft agreement, Yatsenyuk had already called for an unconditional acceptance of the IMF package: “We have no other choice but to accept the IMF offer”.

In surrendering to the IMF, Yatsenyuk was fully aware that the proposed reforms would brutally impoverish millions of people, including those who protested in Maidan.

In an address to Parliament on March 27, following the confirmation of the IMF’s pledged $18 billion loan, prime minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk warned that Ukraine was “on the brink of the economic and financial bankruptcy”.

The proposed “‘solution” includes a significant increase in income taxes, a freeze on wages, and higher energy prices. “We have no choice but to tell Ukraine the truth,” said Yatsenyuk.

State energy company Naftogaz announced this week that household gas prices would rise 50 percent beginning May 1 in what it said was part of efforts to make utility costs economically viable for the state by 2018. Some analysts have estimated prices might have to double for consumers.

The first increase in the price of gas is scheduled to take place in early May, a few weeks prior to the May 25 elections.
    -
The May 2014 increase in the retail price of gas is part of a phasing out of government subsidies over a period of 4 years demanded by the IMF as part of the loan agreement.
The increase in fuel and transportation prices will inflate costs of production. Combined with the impact of the devaluation of the hryvnia, it will have an immediate impact on the retail prices of essential commodities. Moreover, the phasing out of subsidies on basic food staples is also contemplated as part of the IMF framework.

If adopted, the IMF package will trigger a significant overall increase in the prices of essential consumer goods, thereby contributing to the impoverishment of a population which has already been impoverished.

Under the Yanukoych government, Ukraine purchased more than half its natural gas from Russia’s Gazprom at 30 percent below its market value as part of a bilateral agreement with the Russian Federation. In addion to IMF guidelines, the repeal of this agreement will have an immediate on the retail price of gas. And in all likelihood, the real price of fuel and transportation will increase by more than the 50 percent target demanded under the IMF agreement.

Deregulation of the Forex Market: Collapse of hryvnia

The IMF package is also conditional upon the of deregulation of the foreign exchange market and the lifting of government controls on forex transactions and capital movements. The IMF has demanded that the Central Bank put an end to its “support” of Ukraine’s national currency the Hryvnia.

Under present conditions, a deregulated forex market based on “enhanced exchange rate flexibility” will open the door to a highly profitable speculative trade in the currency markets, which will contribute to exacerbating the countries indebtedness, while pushing the hryvnia to the floor.

Given the virtual absence of central bank reserves, this decline of the hryvnia could even occur prior to the implementation of the IMF program.

    Devastating Social Impact

The adoption of an IMF loan agreement is required as a precondition for the release of bilateral financial support from the EU and US. The

EU has confirmed financial support of the order of 1.6 billion euro.

In apparent liaison with the IMF, the US Congress has approved a bill to aid Ukraine. The Congressional decision was also announced on March 27.

A $1 billion in loan guarantees is granted “to help stabilize Ukraine’s economy” [aka impoverish]. The bill would also authorize “assistance for democracy, governance and civil society programs” [aka support to ultra right wing groups] and “enhanced security cooperation”. National Security is coordinated by the Ukraine Defense and National Security Council which is controlled by Neo-Nazi Svoboda and Right wing appointees.

The measure [contained in the bill] also would sanction those who are responsible for human rights abuses against anti-government protesters and those responsible for undermining the peace and sovereignty of the Ukraine. (Fox New, March 27, 2014)

I agree that we should not punish Russia . But I go further . Any treaty between an Illegal government like the present in the Ukraine and the IMF is Null and Void .
So if one day a new government is elected , I hope that the new government will sequester any property sold to other parties following the IMF treaty and declare this treaty Illegal because it was imposed by unelected criminals and Banksters . I suggest also to declare the IMF leaders wanted by the police and put a bounty on their heads . Banksters that impose austerity on the population should be declared common Criminals and subjected to long term in jail or shot in the head as it is done in China .

Ukraine agrees to 50% gas price hike amid IMF talks

*UKRAINE TO RAISE GAS PRICES FOR HOUSEHOLDS 50% FROM MAY 1
*UKRAINE TO RAISE GAS PRICE FOR HEATING UTILITIES 40% FROM JULY

Ukraine's interim government says it will raise gas prices for domestic consumers by 50% in an effort to secure an International Monetary Fund (IMF) aid package.

An official at Ukraine's Naftogaz state energy company said the price rise would take effect on 1 May, and further rises would be scheduled until 2018.

Ukrainians are accustomed to buying gas at heavily subsidised rates.

But the IMF has made subsidy reform a condition of its deal.

Ukraine currently buys more than half of its natural gas from Russia's Gazprom, and then sells it on to consumers at below market prices.

Yury Kolbushkin, budget and planning director at Naftogaz, told reporters that gas prices for district heating companies would also rise by 40% from 1 July.

IMF negotiators are still in Kiev to negotiate a package of measures worth billions of dollars to help Ukraine's interim government plug its budget deficit and meet foreign loan repayments.

    Deal expected

The IMF is also asking Ukraine to crack down on corruption and end central bank support for the Ukrainian currency.

On Tuesday, Ukraine's finance minister Olexander Shlapak said the country was seeking $15-20bn (£9-12bn) from the IMF.

The Financial Times has reported that a rescue package worth about $15bn is close to being agreed, and could be announced as early as Thursday.

An agreement with the IMF is necessary to unlock further financial support from the EU and US.

Financial help is urgently required as Ukraine has been forced to plunder its foreign currency reserves, and the economy is expected to contract by 3% this year, according to the country's finance ministry.

In the US, arguments in Congress over reforms to the IMF have held up plans to offer Ukraine $1bn in loan guarantees.

The EU says its financial support, potentially worth 1.6bn euros (£1.3bn) is contingent on the IMF deal being agreed.

    When Countries Go Bankrupt

    http://www.wfs.org/blogs/thomas-frey/when-countries-go-bankrupt

What happens when a nation goes bankrupt?

When a country goes bust, the pain is felt on very deep levels. The most basic systems and institutions that people have come to depend on simply disappear. Power companies stop operating, the police stopped working, gas stations close, grocery stores run out of food, postal workers stop delivering mail, retirement checks stopped coming, and banks close their doors with bankers fleeing the country, taking people’s life savings with them.

This is what happened in Argentina in 1999.

Argentine president, Carlos Menem, bought into some of the IMF’s latest thinking about how an unrestrained capitalist market would be the ultimate recipe for success. However, without proper checks and balances, businesses will thrive at the expense of the country, and the general population will suffer.

In Argentina’s case, wealthy people took their money and fled the country. Over $40 billion left the country in one single night. This resulted in a run on the banks, followed by a collapse of the country’s national currency. Argentina’s citizens were so desperate and panicked that many spent nights sleeping in front of the automated teller machines.

In reaction to this, the government froze all bank accounts for one year, only allowing people to withdraw minor amounts of $250 per week.

In December 2001, confrontations between the police and citizens became a common sight, and fires were set on some of the main roads in Buenos Aires. President Fernando de la Rúa declared a state of emergency, which just led to more conflicts and turmoil.

Eventually, the situation became so chaotic that President Fernando de la Rúa fled an enraged mob by helicopter.

Many private companies were also affected by the crisis. Argentine Airlines, as an example, was hit hard, and forced to stop all international flights, on several occasions in 2002. They came close to bankruptcy, but managed to survive.

The unemployment rate soaring to nearly 25%

An estimated 30,000-40,000 of the newly homeless and jobless survived by scavenging the streets for cardboard to eke out a paltry living by selling it to recycling plants.

Many barter networks cropped up to compensate for the widespread shortage of cash, and large numbers of people began to rely on them.

Argentine products were rejected by some countries, for fear they might arrive damaged or in poor condition.

Agriculture was also affected. The USDA put restrictions on Argentine food and drugs arriving at the United States.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

    Lessons from Iceland

Iceland, a tiny country with just under 320,000 residents, was the first domino to fall in the 2008 global financial meltdown, when its banks defaulted on $85 billion.

Iceland was hit harder by the crisis than many other countries because of its inflated banking system. In just five years, the banks went from being almost entirely domestic lenders to major international financial intermediaries.

Unbeknownst to most of the population, the country basically turned itself into a massive hedge fund. The whole nation was caught up in a web of deception.

In a matter of weeks after the banks’ collapse, the unemployment rate jumped to 10 percent, house prices fell, the currency plunged and inflation surged.

But Iceland used a different rulebook than Argentina.

They refused to bail out the banks and jealously guarded, and even expanded, social programs. This may represent a model for other countries facing a similar calamity in the future.

Just over three years after Iceland’s economic implosion, the country is showing strong signs of recovery.

So one wonders if taking the bailout from the banks is really the smart thing to do!

Interesting Micjer. I learned today that Canada has a debt of 123 billion now. As well I also learned that over $600 billion worth of cash, equal to an amazing 32% of Canada's GDP is now sitting in corporate bank accounts doing nothing, absolutely nothing! It is considered basically "dead money". Not invested in research or development, etc. Any bets as to where this money will disappear if Canada's economy or currency collapses? It certainly won't be in the hands of the poor!

Then we have our despot PM going off on a tangent in Ukrainian affairs. Mad

    Oliver's post on Facebook

They weren’t all burnt alive. Before the fire, an unseen massacre has been performed inside the Trade Union House in Odessa. Also, there weren’t 40 dead only, but much more. Some sources say more than 100, including many women and at least 5 children. There, in Odessa, strange things are ongoing: nobody couldn’t enter the building for two days, the police has new chiefs…The terrifying images from the horror place show many dead bodies (from the upper levels) having only their heads burnt with some flammable mixture while their lower bodies and clothes remained untouched. There is a picture of a dead woman with naked lower part of her body, obviously first rapped and then burnt with the same mixture. The totally burnt ones are found on the first two levels only. Many of the bodies across the upper levels have wounds caused by firearms. The fire is caused in order to hide the evidences of the horror.

You see, I won’t publish those pictures; they however circle across the world. Soon, they will reach you, asking you to answer some logical and uncomfortable questions to yourselves. You will know your answers. I know my own. I didn't want this profile to have ugly things, but what happened in Odessa leaves no choice. The photo of the pregnant woman killed inside the building doesn't allow choices. She was an ordinary worker in the Trade Union Home, taking care of flowers, but she was an unpleasant witness too. It can be clearly seen that there are no tracks of fire inside the office, but just a quick and brutal murder performed by a sick beast with a human appearance. (She was probably strangled by an electric wire that can be noticed over her neck). Then, she was just left in that position, broken like a fragile plant, with a baby in her stomach. She’s left to be seen like this. In my opinion, the whole Odessa massacre represents the bloodiest provocation so far, intending to push Russia into a direct military intervention, which would cause a global drama.

A few more words about the pregnant woman. On the following video terrible female screams can be heard, screams that overloud all outside voices. People outside comment that a women can be heard screaming. Then, screams are silenced, while a Ukrainian flag is weaving from the neighboring window.

    http://vk.com/video-70830331_168367957?list=a2785257c19d46cfcb

The last witness has been eliminated, a victory has been proclaimed. The analyzed images show the possible killer, too, next to the window with the flag. Then, flames follow. Survivors on the roof. The killers among them. They were all taken to the police. The next day, Yatsenyuk and Julia visit Odessa (btw., she was captured giving orders how the veterans of the WWII to be attacked while celebrating May 9th, the day of the victory over fascism – this video will also reach you). They changed the police chiefs. People were protesting in front of the police building. 67 of the-massacre-day-protesters have been released as a result. Nevertheless, certain guys remain inside the police building. Most probably – the executors. In a few days, it will be the May 9th.

    And a News Video
    You Won’t See
    On Western Media

Dear Americans, watching your boob tubes broadcasting an electronic CNN/FOX “Iron Curtain” network filtering news about this developing Cold War in television snow jobs. What would you think of your government in Washington DC if it had ordered its police to stand down and allow a militia of hooligans and American Nazi Party Skinheads to be transported by the thousands to start a riot in a neighboring city, after a mass torch lit, Hitlerian, rally in the capital? What would you say if the government sent those neo-Nazis to charge through and destroy a tent city set up by, let’s say, the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations in New York? On the other hand, let’s say Washington had blessed their bus ride up to Boston where they could beat to death men and women at a Tea Party rally, before burning down their camp and stage with Molotov cocktails (cloth wicks dipped into bottles filled with gasoline)?
Ukrainian ultra-nationalist throwing Molotov cocktail into Odessa's Trade Union building where dozens were trapped by mobs and burnt to death.

Ukrainian ultra-nationalist throwing Molotov cocktail into Odessa’s Trade Union building where dozens were trapped by mobs and burnt to death.

How would you feel if unarmed and peacefully assembling Tea Party or Occupy Wall Street demonstrators, once flushed out of their gathering place or camp by fire and armed mobs of neo-Nazi’s yelling Sieg Heil! sought the safety of a nearby stone and cement Union Hall, hoping that the city police would at last do something to restore peace and order—but they had “other” orders from Washington? They let neo-Nazis surround your building and begin to throw Molotov cocktails through the windows setting the building on fire.

What would think about a government’s response to those perhaps sharing your sympathies for either the Tea Party or the Occupy Wall Street demonstrators encouraged those neo-Nazi mobs trap people with your political views inside that building so the smoke would suffocate and the fires would burn them to death?
Right Sector storm troopers setting fire to trade union building.

Right Sector storm troopers setting fire to trade union building.

Oh, not all of them. Some managed to fight their way out, running through a gauntlet of thugs beating them to an inch of their life only to be arrested and dragged away by those same idle police. A dozen unfortunates couldn’t get down the stairs and chose to jump out flaming windows to fall hard on the stone street below. What would you think of a government in Washington that let police, fire and EMT units just look on as the few Tea Party or Occupy Wall Street demonstrators who survived their flaming jump out of windows, lay there crippled and helpless and the only people who answered their cries and outstretched hands replied with knives, clubs and Neo-Nazis slogans finishing them off?

    OdessaMassacreFlamesWindows

This is what happened on Saturday, 3 May 2014 in the city of Odessa, Ukraine, to what had been for months, a throng of peaceful demonstrators camped in the square petitioning that a referendum be held to decide on a new Ukrainian government giving the union of Ukrainian western and ethnically Russian eastern provinces more autonomy within Ukraine’s borders. They were not “Russian separatists” or “Russian militants” as the US media, aping the US State Department memos identify them. The way the US media initially reported the massacre one would think the fire just broke out, the people who survived their jump just were finished off somehow, we don’t know who killed the Russian militants or why they entered a building that was set on fire by someone and just managed to get in the way of somebody’s pistol shot or baseball bat swing like a harp seal baby on the pavement.

    RightSectorBlacksPistolRaised

Your American media reads their copy from State Department communiqués, unchecked, blindly about this and about your US diplomats and a US Senator, even, gone gladly to shake the hand of people called anything by your press but what they truly are. No, they aren’t “duly elected”, freedom-loving leaders of the US backed Ukrainian regime. There was no “election” of these thugs, unless you call a Molotov cocktail a “vote” or a bullet from a sniper a “ballot”. Democ-hypocrisy by torch thrown into a government building by a mob ignoring agreements to have a national election to sort differences was what brought this interim government into power with its many neo-Nazi and ultranationalist.
    "Right Sector" Banner.

“Right Sector” Banner. Note the Celtic Cross bandanas, a widely recognized unity symbol of white supremacists worldwide.

The US-backed street-thug cabal in Kiev on Friday night had no qualms letting a mass rally of thousands of Nazi-saluting Right Sector and Svoboda militia units carrying torches reminiscent of Nazi Party rallies in Hitler’s Germany march up and down the boulevards chanting Ukraiyenyia Slava! (Glory to Ukraine! otherwise known as their Sieg Heil! chant). After the rally they loaded buses on their way to join the other Right Sector units already gathering or busing down from Kiev to Odessa, itching for a massacre of demonstrators camped in this usually mellow and picturesque city of mostly ethnic Russians.
Prime Minister Yastenyuk flashing that Nazi salute at a Svoboda ralley.

Prime Minister Yastenyuk flashing that Nazi salute at a Svoboda ralley.

Now then, my point to you Americans is this. If you were sympathetic to demonstrations of the Tea Party or Occupy Wall Street but didn’t take an active part, yet you saw your government allow neo-Nazis free reign to kill, burn and massacre anyone out there in your streets sharing your views, wouldn’t you think you could be next? If fascists were sitting in cabinet posts holding immense power, overseeing your FBI, your police forces, your justice department’s “new” interpretation of your laws that now take an extreme view against your free speech, your rights, would you not be frightened enough and made mad enough to organize, arm yourselves—seek assistance from a neighboring country even—because your government has decided you are scum to be cleansed from the land?

Now, I want to show you a video from alternative media sources that will show you the events of the last several days illuminated with a grim and neo-Fascist torchlight your US President and US Secretary of State and the echo chamber US media does not want you to see:

Even the alternative media didn't post that photo of the dead woman and her baby which goes to show you how much is filtered. I knew that some of these victims had tried to escape that Trade Union Bldg. and found the exits locked and blocked by the Kiev sympathizers which either necessitated them jumping out of windows or burning alive. The Molotov cocktails were thrown into the bldg. by the Kiev sympathizers not the other way about. The coup in Kiev is trying to instigate a bloody civil war and blaming Russia for it.

Donetsk People's Republic asks Moscow to consider its accession into Russia
    Published time: May 12, 2014

Donetsk People's Republic has proclaimed itself a sovereign state and has asked Moscow to consider its accession into Russia, the Republic’s council said.

“We, the people of Donetsk, based on results of the May 11 referendum and the declaration of sovereignty of the Donetsk People’s Republic, declare that from now on DPR is now a sovereign state,” Republic Co-Chairman Denis Pushilin said. “Given the will of the people of the Donetsk People's Republic, and in order to restore historical justice, we ask Russia to consider the issue of our republic’s accession into the Russian Federation,” he added.

Earlier on Monday the results of referendums have been announced in Donetsk and Lugansk Regions, showing the majority of voters support self-rule, amid an intensified military operation by Kiev which resulted in several deaths.

Almost 90 percent of voters in Donetsk Region have endorsed political independence from Kiev, the head of the Central Election Commission of the self-proclaimed ‘Donetsk People’s Republic’, Roman Lyagin, announced.

“Counting the ballots proved to be surprisingly easy – the number of people who said ‘no’ was relatively small and there appeared to be only a tiny proportion of spoiled ballots, so we managed to carry out counting quite fast. The figures are as follows: 89.07 percent voted ‘for’, 10.19 percent voted ‘against’ and 0.74 percent of ballots were rendered ineligible,” Lyagin told journalists.

In Lugansk Region 96.2 percent of voters supported the region’s self-rule, according to the final figures announced by the local election commission.

The Kremlin’s press service has issued a statement, saying: “Moscow respects the will of the people in Donetsk and Lugansk and hopes that the practical realization of the outcome of the referendums will be carried out in a civilized manner.”

Bloodbath in Odessa guided by interim rulers of Ukraine (UPDATED May 15)

    http://orientalreview.org/2014/05/14/bloodbath-in-odessa-guided-by-interim-rulers-of-ukraine/

The information provided below was obtained from an insider in one of Ukraine’s law-enforcement agencies, who wished to remain anonymous for obvious reasons. It is clear that there are people even within the interim administration in Kiev who are against of what happened in Odessa on May 2 and throughout the whole country.
    Scheming
After the loss of Crimea and the popular uprising in Mariupol, Odessa is now Ukraine’s only gateway to the sea, thus making it the most important city in the country after Kiev.
Ten days before the tragedy a secret meeting was held in Kiev, chaired by the incumbent president Olexander Turchinov, to prepare a special operation in Odessa. Present were minister of internal affairs Arsen Avakov, the head of the Ukrainian Security Service Valentin Nalivaychenko, and the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Andriy Parubiy. Ukrainian oligarch Ihor Kolomoiskiy, the Kiev-appointed head of regional administration of the Dnepropetrovsk region, was consulted in regard to the operation.
During that meeting Arsen Avakov has reportedly came up with the idea of using football hooligans, known as “ultras,” in the operation. Ever since his time as the head of the Kharkov regional administration he has worked closely with the fans leaders, whom he continued to sponsor even from his new home in Italy.
Kolomoisky temporarily delivered his private “Dnieper-1” Battalion under the command of law-enforcement officials in Odessa and also authorized a cash payment of $5,000 for “each pro-Russian separatist” killed during the special operation.
A couple of days before the operation in Odessa Andriy Parubiy brought dozens of bullet-proof vests to local ultra-nationalists. This video shows an episode of handing the vests to the local Maidan activists in Odessa. Take note of the person who receives the load. He is Mykola Volkov, a local hard-core criminal who would be repeatedly screened during the assault on Trade Unionist House gun-shooting at the people and reporting about the “incident” by phone to an official in Kiev.

Paul Craig Roberts - The Crisis in Ukraine & The Geopolitical Chess Game
    May 31, 2014

Paul Craig Roberts has had careers in scholarship and academia, journalism, public service, and business. Roberts is probably best known for being the Assistant Secretary of the US Treasury for Economic Policy in the Reagan Administration. He was associate editor and columnist with the Wall Street Journal, columnist for Business Week and the Scripps Howard News Service. He is a contributing editor to Gerald Celente's Trends Journal. He is the author of numerous books, including his most recent, How America Was Lost: From 9/11 to the Police/Warfare State. He is currently chairman of The Institute for Political Economy. In this program, we discuss the neo-con’s war agenda and how the Ukraine fits into the Wolfowitz doctrine. We talk about the violent Coup d'état in Kiev and who has been the driving factor behind the illegitimate takeover of the country. Paul also discusses the inconsistencies in the various political factions that have been helping each other in order to take control of the Ukraine. Washington’s willingness to work with anyone, including criminals, in order to achieve their goals is no big surprise but is speaks volumes about their ambitions to remain in power. Later, we discuss Putin’s Russia and how vastly different the roles are today, than just 25 years ago and what the grudge between the west’s elite and Russia is about. Paul explains how the USA is losing more and more influence around the world. He paints a picture of no more superpowers and what power dynamic will replace it. Later, we discuss the future of the American dollar, multicultural madness in Europe and the next step in the geopolitical chess game.
