The Deep Sleep That Patients didn't Awake From
Toni was a renowned, award-winning television and theater actress. Her success came at a constant addiction to pain killers and an array of uppers and downers. She was referred to a charismatic psychiatrist a self-proclaimed artist himself who told her that she could be put to sleep and upon awakening, all your troubles will be gone. When she woke 10 days later, she had lost weight, but not her pill addiction. Her psychiatrist, Dr. Harry Bailey, convinced her to continue deep sleep therapy at a cost to her private health insurance. This time she was discharged from the facility with not only her addiction still intact, but with fading memory and feeling suicidal.
It would be years before her memory about the violent therapy was triggered. While watching the news on television, she learned that patients undergoing deep sleep therapy had been tricked into a private psychiatric facility where they were drugged unconscious with a potentially lethal cocktail of psychiatric drugs. Electroshock most often given without consent and, certainly without Toni's consent was administered daily. 48 patients had died. Their death certificates were falsified to make it appear they had died of natural causes.
Stevie was the lead singer of the country's number one rock band. At 18, he was headed for international stardom. By the age of 21, however, the fame was over. The band folded. Stevie developed a heroin habit. He was admitted to hospital for deep sleep treatment. When he awoke after two weeks, his brain had been so badly damaged by the 14 electroshocks he received, that he never fully regained his former creative abilities.
As psychiatrists and the hospital director covered up the deaths and damaged lives from deep sleep therapy, it was left to a nurse who worked undercover in the psychiatric facility, obtaining medical files and photocopying them, to blow the whistle. Handing her evidence to the police, psychiatrists were eventually charged with manslaughter.
Facts:
Deep Sleep Treatment involved massive dosages of a cocktail of barbiturates and tranquilizers that knocked a patient into a 2-week coma while ECT was administered daily usually without patient consent. The therapy caused blood clots, pneumonia, brain damage and death.
Due to the efforts of a nurse, former patients and a human rights group, deep sleep treatment has been banned. The psychiatric facility was shut down. Its survivors were compensated millions of dollars.
Dr. Bailey avoided his victims by committing suicide, taking an overdose of the barbiturates he had killed so many of his patients with, swallowing them with a bottle of beer. This was immediately prior to a court case that would have ended his career.

CCHR is a Church of Scientology front group, and it should be known that they have their own agenda behind their various detailings of Psychiatric abuses.
Their stories may or may not be accurate on their own, but CCHR definitely wants to leave you with a certain picture in your mind. Their original purpose was to remove what they saw as competition to Scientology, and a source of trouble to the cult's expansion plans.

I did not know about the Church of Scientology . However the story is true because there was a great scandal at that time in Sydney . I remember reading about it and as a consequence of that scandal the " deep sleep therapy " was banned and the mental hospital was closed . From what we read in the newspapers we think ( my wife and I ) that there were strange going in that place for many decades and the newspapers probably only scratched the surface of the problem .

Oh, I know it goes on. There was a doctor in Canada, Montreal, I think who was doing experiments for the CIA at the university hospital, and he used all kinds of torture, including sleep and sensory deprivation, electro shock, drugs and more. Wikipedia has an article on him Donald Ewen Cameron.

6 million U.S. children are taking psychiatric drugs for ADHD and other mental disorders. The number of teenagers diagnosed with depression is rising. There is well documented correlation between ant-depressants and teenager’s suicide.
