Some people, mostly Republicans, still believe that the wealthy are good people because they create jobs. Let me introduce you to the 21st century and the “new economy”. The wealthy don’t give even a small damn about the people. Read a little history of the Robber Barons of the 1800s such as J.P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, Salmon P. Chase and numerous others and you will find cutthroat tactics, union busting and monopoly building.

During the middle part of this century workers enjoyed some degree of job security and could still climb the corporate ladder to a supposed better life and even have hopes of a decent retirement! In the 21st century those practices no longer exist. Business practices have changed in pursuit of the almighty dollar and a higher profit margin.

Ahhh, the profit margin. There seems to be some unwritten law in business that the profit margin should only increase, never decrease. Pass all cost increases on down the line to the consumer. If you are employed, expect to receive absolutely no notice that you are being laid off or terminated. Corporations no longer want you around to disrupt the others workers. Do not expect any severance pay either. They no longer feel that obligation, and chances are great that they have already hired a replacement at a lower salary.

You can expect that wages will be frozen, that you be expected to work harder for less benefits. Nothing personal, it’s just business. There are hundreds of job categories that no longer exist, so there are hundreds of thousands of workers whose skills have simply been phased out. Computer software and robotics make even less need for workers, and of course, outsourcing and offshoring cut costs and reduce the need for workers. In short, too many workers, not enough jobs.

But the real myth of the wealthy these days is that they are still creating jobs at all. It just isn’t so. Why should they? The rich have learned that they can just enjoy their leisure time while their money is making money. They don’t need the headache of working while the Wall Street brokers and swindlers are making money for them. They can and do buy politicians who will make sure the government doesn’t take “too” much of their money.

They buy police and private protection to make sure the masses don’t come “too” close. They live in that rare air that makes them believe that they are good people because they make the occasional (tax deductible) charitable donation, build a museum or add a hospital wing. The rich are completely out of touch with the reality of the people. Don’t believe me? Just watch an episode of the Kardashians… and they are on the low end of the super rich. In the meantime, I think I’ll be on the lookout for another Wall Street crash like 1929. Now that’s entertainment!
