SLIGHT CHANCE OF FLARES: NOAA forecasters estimate a 10% to 15% chance of M-class solar flares during the next 24 hours. The likely source would be sunspot AR1575, near the center of the solar disk. The odds are low, but if a flare occurs in AR1575, it will be Earth-directed.

FARSIDE EXPLOSION: An active region on the farside of the sun exploded on Sept. 23rd, hurling a bright coronal mass ejection over the sun's eastern limb. Orbiting at the L1 Lagrange Point, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) recorded the expanding cloud: The cloud is not heading for Earth. Nor is any other planet in the line of fire. In a few days, however, the sun's rotation will turn the blast site toward Earth. After that, eruptions could become geoeffective.

MAGNETIC QUIET: The solar wind blowing around Earth is thin and steady, which means it is doing little to rattle our planet's magnetic field. Geomagnetic storms are unlikely during the next 24 hours.

EMERGING BLAST SITE: A farside sunspot that exploded and hurled a bright CME into space on Sept. 23rd is now rotating onto the Earthside of the sun. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory photographed the emerging blast site during the early hours of Sept. 26th:

FARSIDE EXPLOSION: A sunspot on the farside of the sun exploded on Sept. 27th, sparking a bright flare of extreme ultraviolet radiation and hurling a massive CME into space. Although the explosion occurred on the other side of the sun, it was visible on cell phones all around Earth. Here is a screenshot from NASA's 3D Sun app:
The app displays a realtime 360o view of the sun, which you can spin, pinch, and zoom to examine explosions around the complete circumference of the star. Data from NASA's twin STEREO probes and the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) are combined to assemble the 3-dimensional view, now available on iPhones, iPads, and Android devices.

This active region could flare again. Download the app to track the blast site as it transits the farside of the sun. If it lasts long enough, it will emerge onto the Earthside of the sun late next week.

INCOMING SOLAR STORM CLOUD: Magnetic fields around sunspot 1577 erupted on Sept. 28th, hurling a coronal mass ejection (CME) almost directly toward Earth. The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) recorded the cloud as it raced away from the sun faster than 2.2 million mph: NOAA forecasters estimate a 50% chance of strong geomagnetic storms around the poles on Sept 30th when the cloud reaches Earth. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras, which might be intense enough to see in spite of the full moonlight.

2012-09-28 20:37 UTC G2 (Moderate) Geomagnetic Storming Expected

A filament eruption near end-of-day September 27th resulted in a brief S1 (Minor) radiation storm. The Earth-directed coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with this event is en route and is expected to affect Earth mid to late day on September 30th (Eastern time), with storming continuing into the 1st. Geomagnetic storm levels reaching the G2 (Moderate) level are possible for both days. The full moon may make viewing the aurora more difficult, but high latitude aurora watchers should be on the lookout during that time, nonetheless. Stay tuned for updates.

GOES-14 Online as Secondary X-ray Sensor and Imager:
GOES-14 has been brought online to provide additional operational coverage during the GOES eclipse season, the period where Earth comes between the GOES spacecraft and the Sun, obscuring the measurement for a brief period each day. After the eclipse season (on or around October 16th), GOES-14 will become the primary, and only, operational X-ray measurement platform (both XRS and SXI) during planned maintenance for GOES-15. After the GOES-15 maintenance (on or around October 30th), GOES-14 will return to storage and GOES-15 will once again be the primary, and only, operational X-ray measurement platform.

According to recent info from Space Weather Prediction Center on September 28, 2012 at20:37 TC – G2 (Moderate) Geomagnetic Storming is expected.

A filament eruption near end-of-day September 27th resulted in a brief S1 (Minor) radiation storm.

However, the Earth-directed coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with this event is en route and is expected to affect Earth mid to late day on September 30th (Eastern time), with storming continuing into the 1st.

“The sun erupted with a wide, Earth-directed coronal mass ejection (CME) on Sept. 27, 2012 at 10:25 p.m. EDT” we read on NASA’s website.

“CMEs are a phenomenon that can send billions of tons of solar particles into space that can reach Earth one to three days later, affecting electronic systems in satellites and on the ground. Experimental NASA research models estimate that the CME is traveling at around 700 miles per second and will reach Earth on Sept. 29.”

“The CME is associated with a fairly small solar flare that was measured as C-class, which is third in strength after X- and M-class flares. The flare peaked at 7 p.m. EDT and came from an active region on the sun labeled AR 1577.”

DOUBLE IMPACT: Earth's magnetic field is reverberating in response to a pair of impacts on Sept. 30th. A weak interplanetary shock wave hit Earth at 10:25 UT followed by a stronger CME strike at approximately 22:30 UT. Observers in Norway are reporting significant ground currents, while the Arctic Circle is glowing with Northern Lights.

PLASMA PUFFS TARGET VENUS: Sunspot 1583 is in a near-constant state of eruption. Magnetic instabilities in the sunspot's magnetic canopy are hurling massive "puffs" of magnetized plasma into space. Because AR1583 is on the farside of the sun, Earth is not in the line of fire. Venus, on the other hand, could receive a glancing blow from these clouds. Because Venus has no global magnetic field to protect it from solar storms, the impacts could erode small amounts of gas directly from the top of the planet’s atmosphere. Moreover, incoming plasma clouds can cause explosions in Venus's upper atmosphere called "hot flow anomalies." The space weather forecast for the second planet is stormy.

SUNSPOTS: Earth-facing sunspots 1579 and 1582 are so large, sky watchers are noticing them without the assistance of a solar telescope. When the low-hanging sun is dimmed by clouds and haze, the two spots can be seen punctuating the sunset: Spewing solar wind, a pair of small coronal holes is turning toward Earth. Although these sunspots are large (each one is wider than Earth) they are not very active. Their magnetic canopies contain are simply organized, containing no unstable structures that pose a threat for flares. NOAA forecasters say there is less than a 5% chance of M-flares and a 1% chance of X-flares today.

    Solar wind speed: 318.7 km/sec

FLATLINED: Solar activity is very low. With no sunspots actively flaring, the sun's x-ray output has flatlined. NOAA forecasters say there is no more than a 5% chance of M-flares and a 1% chance of X-flares today.

EARTH-DIRECTED CME: Magnetic fields near sunspot AR1582 slowly erupted on Oct 5th sparking a B7-class solar flare and hurling a CME toward Earth. The Solar and Heliosphere Observatory (SOHO) captured this image of the expanding cloud: Although Earth is in the line of fire, it won't be a direct hit. Instead, the CME will deliver a glancing blow to our planet's magnetic field. NOAA forecasters estimate a 20% chance of polar geomagnetic storms when the cloud arrives on Oct. 8th. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras especially during the hours around local midnight.

Signal, Interrupted: Sun Spots Interfere with Satellites this Week

Is your cable television signal fuzzy, internet reception spotty or cell phone service dropping in and out? Don't blame your service provider over the next few days, blame the sun.

Expected solar flare activity now through next Thursday is expected to interrupt satellite signals to earth and cause signal interference.

Sun outages happen during the spring and fall when solar radiation interferes with satellite signals, said Matthew Templeton of the American Association of Variable Star Observers.

The sun is currently in a period of maximum activity and solar flares will be at their highest point in years. The last time there was a high period of solar activity; there were few people that relied on things like GPS in their daily lives. Today GPS is a very common technology that millions rely on each day for getting around all over the world. The military also relies on GPS for combat operations.

The coming period of high solar activity and solar flares has some scientists worried that GPS may cause some problems for some users. The researchers point out that the military uses a much more complex GPS system than consumers have access to and military use of GPS should not be affected.

Most cable companies and other service providers who depend on clear satellite signals report that due to technological innovations and system upgrades, they expect minor issues, if any at all. Large scale outages are not expected.

CME HITS EARTH'S MAGNETIC FIELD, SPARKS AURORAS: As expected, a coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth's magnetic field on Oct. 8th at approximately 0500 UT. The impact sparked a moderate (Kp=6) geomagnetic storm and Northern Lights in the USA as far south as Kansas, Utah and Colorado. Although the storm is subsiding, high-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras as Earth's magnetic field continues to reverberate from the CME strike. Solar wind flowing from the indicated coronal hole should reach Earth on Oct. 9-10.

Earth hit by geomagnetic storm: more active region of the Sun turning towards Earth
\October 9, 2012 – SUN - A geomagnetic storm is in progress as Earth passes through the wake of a CME that arrived on Oct. 8th. Reports of auroras are coming in from across Canada and all the northern-tier US states. Beth Allan sends this picture from Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta: “The auroras outside of Edmonton were so bright for a while that it was easy to walk around in the field I was standing in,” says Allan. “The lights were moving so fast and were so crisp that it felt like I could reach out and touch them. Really astounding!” High-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras as Earth’s magnetic field continues to reverberate from the CME strike. A new and possibly significant active region is emerging at the circled location (below) on the sun’s northern limb. GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY CONTINUES: For the third day in a row, geomagnetic storms are circling the poles. In North America, auroras have spilled across the Canadian border descending as far south as Utah, Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska. The best place to see the show, according to pilot Matt Melnyk, is from the window of an airplane: The storms were instigated by a CME strike on Oct. 8th and they are about to be re-energized by a solar wind stream due to hit Earth's magnetic field on Oct. 10th. NOAA forecasters estimate a 40% chance of strong geomagnetic storms during the next 24 hours.

    SOHO LASCO C2 Latest Image - Page 13 Ontari10

Explanation: North America at night is easy to recognize in this view of our fair planet from orbit, acquired by the Suomi-NPP satellite on October 8. The spectacular waves of visible light emission rolling above the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario in the upper half of the frame are the Aurora Borealis or northern lights. Encircling the poles and extending to lower latitudes, impressive aurorae seen during the past few days are due to strong geomagnetic storms. The storms were triggered by a solar coronal mass ejection on October 4/5, impacting Earth's magnetosphere some three days later. The curtains of light, shining well over 100 kilometers above the surface, are formed as charged particles accelerated in the magnetosphere excite oxygen and nitrogen in the upper atmosphere

Sunspot 1589 poses a threat for M-class solar flares. Solar wind flowing from the indicated coronal hole should reach Earth on Oct. 14-15.
    Solar wind speed: 477.5 km/sec

RADIO STORM ON JUPITER: Last night there was a storm on Jupiter--a radio storm. Amateur radio astronomer Thomas Ashcraft recorded the event using a shortwave radio telescope located in New Mexico. Click on the dynamic spectrum (a plot of intensity vs. frequency vs. time) to hear the whooshing, crackling, popping sounds that emerged from his telescope's loudspeaker: "Listen to the recording in stereo," advises Ashcraft. "I recorded the audio from two separate radios at 21.1 MHz and 20.9 MHz, so there is a stereo spatial effect from the frequency drift of the emissions."

Jupiter's radio storms are caused by natural radio lasers in the planet's magnetosphere that sweep past Earth as Jupiter rotates. Electrical currents flowing between Jupiter's upper atmosphere and the volcanic moon Io can boost these emissions to power levels easily detected by ham radio antennas on Earth. Jovian "S-bursts" and "L-bursts" mimic the sounds of woodpeckers, whales, and waves crashing on the beach.

Now is a good time to listen to Jupiter's radio storms. The distance between Earth and Jupiter is decreasing as the giant planet approches opposition on Dec. 3rd; the closer Jupiter gets, the louder it gets.

INCOMING ACTIVE REGION: An active sunspot located just over the sun's northeastern limb exploded during the early hours of Oct. 14th. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory photographed a bright loop of hot plasma twisting over the blast site: he eruption hurled a coronal mass ejection into space: SOHO movie. The cloud will not affect Earth because our planet was not in the line of fire. Future eruptions, however, might be geoeffective. The sun's rotation is about to bring the sunspot onto the Earthside of the sun where we could become targets for future flares.
    Solar wind speed: 490.6 km/sec

GEOMAGNETIC STORMING: Earth's magnetic field is unsettled on Oct. 14th following a lengthy G1-class geomagnetic storm the day before. While the storm of Oct. 13th subsides, another may be in the offing: NOAA forecasters estimate a 55% chance of polar geomagnetic storms on Oct. 14-15 in response to an incoming solar wind stream. High-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras tonight.

If this picture confuses you, turn it sideways to see it the same way photographer June Grønseth did. "I took more than 400 pictures last night," says Grønseth. "The butterfly and the heart were my favorites." www.spaceweather.com

Looking at this picture from facebook for today, 14th Oct 2012, it is very clear to me that it is no coincidence that our planet is still alive and kicking. I am receiving the distinct impression that it is no coincidence that the most powerful solar flares are avoiding mother Gaia.
My intuition tells me that, although the power of the Sun is not something many Galactic Civilisations can toy with, we are being helped and protected here in a huge way.
I have no proof as such, other than my own Higher Self guidance and intuition of course. However, we do have something if we consider all these UFOs gravitating around our Sun.
One can wonder what are they doing there? My own hypothesis is that they are monitoring the Sun, utilize its energy for energy, but they can also ignite explosions in areas close to affection Gaia if a solar flare was to head directly our way. In other words, when to much pressure and energy builds up in an area threatening our planet and our satellite network, they have the go ahead to divert these potential energetic flares from reaching our planet.
A little like a pressure cooker works, when too much pressure is built up inside, there is a release system. Our safety net our the Galactics, who are here to ignite potentially harmful flares away from Earth.
This could be done with their technology, and remember that Type 3 Galactic Civilisations can utilise and work with Suns energy.
They are doing this without asking us for money or other gains, they are not waiting for us to ask for their help and protection. They are doing this, as usual, while most of us are unaware of their helping hand, while others fear them, and while our government has been doing everything to “take them down”. Seems rather unselfish and like unconditional to me! Personally this is a rather humbling and extremely grateful thought, how does it make you feel?
Hugs to everybody! Have a super week!

LIGHTBULB ERUPTION: Sunspot AR1593, now emerging over the sun's northeastern limb, doesn't look very impressive. Yet two days ago it unleashed a very impressive eruption. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded a glowing bulb of plasma more than 100,000 miles across on Oct. 14th: The eruption occured while AR1593 was still on the farside of the sun, so Earth was not in the line of fire. Next time could be different. AR1593 will spend the next ~12 days facing our planet, setting the stage for geoeffective blasts if the sunspot erupts again.

AURORAS FROM ORBIT: Orbiting high above Earth, low-light cameras onboard the US military's fleet of DMSP satellites have captured some magnificant auroras lately. On Oct. 12th, a band of lights cutting across the Hudson Bay in Canada were nearly as bright as the city lights on the continent below:
    SOHO LASCO C2 Latest Image - Page 13 Dmsp_strip
    Solar wind speed: 416.9 km/sec
"This image came from DMSP's F18 satellite," says Paul McCrone who processed the data at the US Navy's Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center in Monterey, CA. "It shows auroras, some wispy clouds, and the brightly-lit urban areas of the northeastern United States."

One can only imagine what sky watchers would have seen if this bright band had descended over the populated regions of the United States. We won't find out this week. NOAA forecasters say the chances of a geomagnetic storm at mid-latitudes during the next three days is no more than 1%.

SUN HALOS: As the northern hemisphere heads deeper into autumn, and ultimately winter, icy clouds become more commonplace. In other words, 'tis the season for sun halos. Charles Yeager photographed this specimen over Cleveland, Minnesota on Oct. 15th:

    SOHO LASCO C2 Latest Image - Page 13 Halo_strip

"This halo looked extremely large over the farm land of southern Minnesota," says Yeager.

In fact, it was 22 degrees in radius. That's how much hexagonal ice crystals in cirrus clouds bend the light of the sun overhead. Related crystals can also create sun pillars, sundogs, and a variety of other luminous halos. Look around the sun; you never know what you might see.

New sunspot 1596 is large and might pose a threat for M-class solar flares. More about this active region will be known in the days ahead as it turns to face Earth. Solar wind speed: 402.7 km/sec

GROUND AND SKY CURRENTS: For the second day in a row, a ~500 km/s solar wind speed is buffeting Earth's magnetic field, igniting auroras around the Arctic Circle.
