    Contactee George Adamski (1891-1965)

George Adamski’s contact is interesting on multiple levels. Although he had sightings over his home in California beginning as early as 1948, his first contact with a male humanoid extraterrestrial (who claimed to be from Venus) wasn’t until November 20, 1952 out in the Mojave Desert. Adamski’s first alien entity contact account included 6 other witnesses who were with him. He later wrote about these first experiences in his book Flying Saucers Have Landed. At the time of first contact Adamski also took photos of the craft within 100 feet of himself but was declined by the extraterrestrial to have photos taken of itself.

Later, an alien appeared and spoke with Adamski using a mixture of gestures, English and telepathy. The male alien was human in appearance, but more blonde and beautiful than most. He was called Orthon and came from the planet Venus. He also wore strange trousers and shoes which left mysterious marks in the sand. The alien communicated to Adamski that there were twelve planets in the solar system, and that all contained enlightened, highly evolved humans like himself. This community Adamski came to refer to as the Space Brothers.

The Space Brothers were apparently concerned that humankind had begun atomic testing on Earth. It was feared that the radiation might somehow leak out through space and cause damage to the Space Brother habitats.

Adamski subsequently wrote Inside the Space Ships, which was his story of what happened to him during his years of alien contact that included his visits inside Venusian and Saturnian Scout crafts and their mother ships, meeting with other extraterrestrials their conversations. This second book also contains 16 photographs (primarily taken in 1955) and illustrations of the great space ships from which the Scout Ships are launched.

Leonard G. Cramp, M.S.I.A., made comparative orthographic drawings of Adamski’s Venusian Scout and the craft photographed by thirteen-year-old Stephen Darbishire in England (the “Coniston Saucer”) and proved the two identical in structure and measurement. These drawings appear in Cramp’s book Space, Gravity and the Flying Saucer (recommended reading for those technically oriented).*

George Adamski was a Polish-born American, one of the first people to publicly claim to have seen and photographed UFOs, met aliens and to have gone on flights with them. He wrote several books relating to his claims, including the best-selling "Flying Saucers Have Landed" (1953), co-written with Desmond Leslie.

Adamski emigrated with his family to New York City in 1893. He served with the U.S. Army from 1913-1916 and with the National Guard until 1919. His post-war activities are unclear but he settled in California in the late 1920s and by 1940 was a self-appointed professor of the Royal Order of Tibet, an organization he founded. He gave lectures on philosophy and "Universal Law" but the organization had a short existence.

In 1949 Adamski wrote a science fiction book which had a space travel theme. Called Pioneers of Space: A Trip to the Moon, Mars and Venus and published by Leonard-Freefield Co of Los Angeles, it was to greatly influence his subsequent writings.

Adamski began claiming sightings of UFOs and taking photographs and film of them, and in the early 1950s he was describing encounters with aliens. His best publicized claimed encounter was on November 20, 1952 when he and friends were in the Mojave Desert. Adamski said they saw a silver disc land and an entirely humanoid alien exit from the disc. Adamski said he approached him and they communicated telepathically. Adamski said the alien, named Orthon, was from Venus and expressed to Adamski his concern over the development of nuclear weapons. Adamski claimed to have met other aliens later (mostly from Venus but also from Mars and Saturn) and said he was taken on flights by them, including one around the moon where he observed valleys and cities.

Five years after publishing his first book, Adamski took some of the fictional material from that book and combined it as fact within Flying Saucers Have Landed. He later published Inside The Flying Saucersand Flying Saucer Farewell and traveled the world on lecture tours.

He had considerable support from UFO proponents worldwide, but also attracted much scorn, TIME magazine going so far as to call him "a crackpot from California". The photographs taken by the first Soviet lunar probe in 1959 he denounced as fakes, and after he announced he was going to Saturn for a conference, many of his supporters became disaffected and his reputation rapidly declined. He died, aged 74, of a heart attack, in Maryland.

The first contact events that began on November 20, 1952, would make Adamski a saucer immortal. Responding to channeled directions from extraterrestrials (who had replaced the Tibetan masters, though their messages were identical), Adamski and six fellow occult seekers headed out for the desert. Near Desert Center, California, he separated from the others and met a landed spaceship. Its pilot was a friendly fellow named Orthon, a handsome, blond-haired Venusian.

In his first book Adamski told of his conversation with a Venusian in the California desert.

"Serious UFO investigators scoffed, but other people all over the world believed, even as Adamski's tales grew ever more outrageous. Adamski's 1955 book Inside the Space Ships recounted his adventures with Venusians, Martians, and Saturnians, who had come to Earth out of concern for humanity's self-destructive ways. These "Space Brothers," as Adamski and his disciples called them, proved a long-winded lot, fond of platitudes and full of tedious metaphysical blather.

In Adamski's wake other "contactees" emerged to spread the interplanetary gospel and to count the take at gatherings of the faithful. The principal gathering was held every summer at Giant Rock, near Twentynine Palms, California. The driving force behind the Giant Rock gatherings was George Van Tassel, who had established psychic contact with extraterrestrial starships ("ventlas") in early 1952. A few months later he rushed into print the first modern contactee book, the misleadingly titled I Rode a Flying Saucer! The following year, Van Tassel would get to do just that when his pal Solganda invited him inside a spaceship for a quick spin.

At the space people's direction, Van Tassel established the College of Universal Wisdom and solicited donations for the construction of the "Integratron," a rejuvenation machine. When completed, Van Tassel told his supporters, it would handle as many as 10,000 persons a day. People would emerge looking no younger, but their cells would be recharged. Untold tens of thousands of dollars later, the Integration languished unfinished in February 1978 when Van Tassel died from the ravages of old age."
