MANGYSTAU, Kazakhstan -- Some 12-15 dead seals have washed up over the past week on the western Kazakh shore of the Caspian Sea, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.

Erik Utebaliev, a local resident, told RFE/RL he found 10-12 dead Caspian seals of all ages, from full-grown adults to pups, on May 3 and three more on May 8.

Heavy rainfall may be linked to sharks' deaths

This winter's heavy rains - beneficial to so many species - may, in fact, be diluting saltwater in San Francisco Bay so dramatically that leopard sharks are dying in the very spots where they prefer to give birth and search for food, scientists said Tuesday.

State biologists investigating a rash of leopard shark casualties around the region over the past month think the torrents of freshwater flowing into shoreline lagoons may be throwing the body chemistry of the fish fatally off balance.

"They might be going into these coves to pup," said Carrie Wilson, a marine biologist in Monterey with the California Department of Fish and Game. "If there's more freshwater intrusion and low salinity, it's very tough on these animals."

The analysis is still in the early stages, and there is no conclusive evidence of a connection, but hundreds of leopard sharks and rays also died in 2006, the last year rainfall was this far above normal.

    More than 100 dead

More than 100 adult and juvenile leopard sharks have been found dead since mid-April. Early necropsies of a few sharks showed internal bleeding and brain lesions, problems not usually associated with low salinity conditions. However, several scientists and members of the public have reported seeing the animals gasping and thrashing before death, suggesting the sharks could have injured themselves after falling ill.

This week, state pathologists are expected to release the results of blood and tissue samples. Those should shed more light on the cause, which could be anything from low salinity and low dissolved oxygen levels to bacterial infection, virus or man-made contaminants such as pesticides or fertilizers.

    Found around bay

The first wave of sharks washed ashore near a residential neighborhood in Redwood City. Since then, dozens of the strikingly patterned bottom-feeders have been spotted along the shores of Foster City, San Francisco and Marin County, according to Sean Van Sommeran of the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation.

Longtime East Bay resident Corky Schweizer observed a shriveled adult leopard shark carcass just south of San Francisco Airport on Saturday morning. He said the animal's remains caught his attention because they were so far above the waterline.

"It basically looked like it had launched itself out of the water," Schweizer said.

Leopard sharks, which can grow 5 feet long and live 40 years or more, are common in the shallow coastal waters from Oregon to Mexico. They typically eat crabs, small fish and mud-dwelling worms.

    Prefer salty water

Though they don't venture out into the deep sea, they do favor water with salinity levels at the higher end of the spectrum, said Wes Dowd, a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University's Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove.

Dowd studied the effect of low-salinity water on leopard sharks as part of his thesis. In his experiments, Dowd found that when salinity fell to 19 parts per thousand, the sharks thrust their noses and fins out of the water in an attempt to survive.

Earlier this spring, sensors in some parts of San Francisco Bay recorded salinity levels below 15 parts per thousand, Dowd said. Seawater salinity maxes out at about 34 or 35 parts per thousand.

"When (salinity) moves lower ... it becomes harder for the sharks to compensate for that change in their environment," Dowd said. "They don't cope well."

    Wait for the data

Though Wilson acknowledges the possible link between the deaths and the rapid influx of freshwater, she declined to use the term "die-off" and cautioned against jumping to conclusions until all the data are in.

"There have been some wild speculations based on only a few samples," she said. "We don't want to give out any information that's premature."

Whatever the roots of the problem, shark specialist Van Sommeran suspects that he and his team of volunteers are collecting only a fraction of the ailing animals.

"We found 50 (sharks) in one canal in Redwood City alone," he said. "Now we're getting calls from Millbrae, San Francisco, Mill Valley, Sausalito - it seems that the affected area is expanding."

Ocean chaos increasing: Hundreds of dead fish wash up on Australian beaches

May 18, 2011 – ALBANY, W Australia — The Department of Fisheries says a strong Leeuwin Current is causing an unusual species of fish to wash up on Albany’s shores. Dozens of oceanic sunfish have been found dead on Goode Beach and at Frenchman’s Bay. The sunfish is native to tropical and temperate waters. The department’s senior research scientist Dr Kim Smith says a strong current is dragging large numbers of sunfish to cooler, southern waters. “This time of year is associated with the Leeuwin Current flowing across the South Coast at its strongest,” she said. “It’s that warm water current and it brings these fish down, this year we have a really strong Leeuwin current and there’s a lot washing up.” Dr Smith says hundreds of sunfish washed up on the South Coast in 2008 due to the current. “It’s possible that this event might be a bigger one, in terms of more fish washing up than the 2008 event,” she said. –ABC News

Dead leopard sharks turning up in Richardson Bay

    05/19/2011

An alarming number of sick, dying and dead leopard sharks have been turning up on the shores of Richardson Bay over the past two weeks, but researchers are baffled as to what is causing the problem, observed elsewhere in the Bay Area as well.
The period of April through June is when leopard sharks enter shallow waters, like those in Richardson Bay, to spawn. This year, some are not leaving.

Marine animal experts are preparing for a potential mass stranding by up to 100 pilot whales in South Uist in the Western Isles.(scotland)

The whales were spotted in Loch Carnan on Thursday afternoon and about 20 were said to have had cuts to their heads.

It is thought the injuries may have been caused by attempts to strand themselves on the rocky foreshore of the sea loch.

Rescuers said inflatable pontoons for refloating whales were on the way.

The pod has been moving back and forth from the shore and rescuers said the animals were "very vocal", which may be a sign of distress.

Members of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) fear the whales could die in a massive beaching - which could be Scotland's largest stranding.

2 lethal parasites team up to kill dolphins, seals
One bug carried by cats, one by opossums spread in the Pacific Northwest

Two parasites, one carried by cats and the other by opossums, are teaming up in the Pacific Northwest to kill seals, otters and other marine mammals.

One of the parasites, Toxoplasma gondii, can infect people, though it's most often found in cat feces. That bug is a known contaminant along the Pacific coast.

The other parasite, Sarcocystis neurona, was a surprising find in the tissues of dead marine mammals, researchers reported Tuesday in the open-access journal PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases. Even more surprising was the discovery that infection byS. neurona makes toxoplasmosis, the disease caused by T.gondii infection, worse. The result is brain swelling and death.

"The most remarkable finding of our study was the exacerbating role that S. neurona appears to play in causing more severe disease symptoms in those animals that are also infected with T. gondii," study researcher Michael Grigg of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said in a statement.

Grigg and his colleagues performed necropsies on 151 dead marine mammals that they suspected had parasitic encephalitis, the medical term for the brain swelling caused by parasite infection. They also examined 10 dead California sea lions that had been healthy when they were euthanized to protect fish stocks in the Columbia River. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43159544/ns/technology_and_science-science/

This won't help either Crying or Very sad

Vast undersea meadows of seagrasses are dying off, shrinking the rich habitat of other species that rely on them for survival.

The first global survey of seagrass revealed that about 14 percent of the species are at risk of extinction.

University of New Hampshire professor Frederick Short, director of SeagrassNet, told the BBC that the plants have vanished from most developed coastlines due to pollution.

Studies at 114 sites around the world found that seagrasses are also in decline throughout many coastal waters due to silt runoff from deforested areas and filled-in wetlands.

They are also being overwhelmed by powerful nutrients flowing into the ocean in sewage and agricultural runoff.

Of the 72 species studied, it was found that 15 should be considered endangered, vulnerable or near threatened in guidelines established for the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List.

Creatures such as fish, sea turtles, sea horses and manatees depend on the fields of flowering marine plants for food, and sometimes to provide a safe haven for their young.

“I was surprised by the level of threat to many species of seagrass and to discover that seagrass biodiversity is under greater threat than I believed," Short told BBC News.

More than 800 tons of fish die and rot on fish farms south of Philippine capital

TALISAY, Philippines - More than 800 tons of fish have died and rotted on fish farms in a lake near Taal volcano south of Manila, with authorities blaming it on a sudden temperature drop.
The massive fish deaths started late last week but have eased. Officials have banned the sale of the rotting fish, which are being buried by the truckload in Talisay and three other towns in Batangas province, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources official Rose del Mundo said Sunday.
The deaths are unrelated to recent signs of restiveness in Taal volcano, which is surrounded by the lake where many villagers have grown milkfish and tilapia — staple foods for many Filipinos, officials said. The volcano and lake are a popular tourist draw.
Government volcanologist Allan Loza said Monday that 115 earthquakes were detected in Taal in the past 24 hours compared to an average of 10 to 15 quakes daily in recent weeks, a sign that magma is rising from within the small volcano. Such unrest has been monitored since April, long before last week's fish deaths, he said.
Talisay agricultural officer Zenaida Macatangay said an initial investigation showed the deaths may have been caused by the temperature change as the rainy season set in last week after a scorching summer, which also depleted the lake's oxygen levels.
Schools of fish were seen swimming in circles before they floated dead to the surface in huge numbers. The deaths have occurred in the past at summer's end but in much smaller numbers, Mendoza said.
Some Taal lake areas turned white due to the massive numbers of dead milk-colored fish. Workers covered their noses with their hands or clothing Sunday as they scooped up the rotting fish and placed them into sacks.
"Many were sad and devastated because they invested a lot in these fish cages," Talisay Mayor Zenaida Mendoza told The Associated Press by telephone.
More than 400 tons of milkfish have died in Talisay alone since Friday in 84 out of about 1,000 fish pens — lake areas about half the size of a basketball court that are fenced off by bamboo poles and nets. Damage has been estimated at $770,000 (33 million pesos), Mendoza said. About 400 tons more have died in the other towns.

Hundreds Of Dead Fish In River Des Peres.
    June 17, 2011

    ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR)—
Hundreds of dead fish are floating in the river Des Peres in South St. Louis. The state has investigated to determine if it was caused by man or nature.

Neighbors who live around the river told News 11 they first spotted the dead fish floating in the river on Wednesday. Hundreds of dead fish stretch for more than a half mile North of Gravois. MSD owns the section of the river. They say they hired crews to spray weed killer and they double checked today and say the crews did use a chemical that does not threaten wildlife. Conservation experts say when the rising Mississippi backs up into the river Des Peres the water can stagnate, lose the oxygen and the fish die, a disturbing sight to people who live nearby.

Oceans heading for mass extinctions, experts warn
Scientist: Situation is 'more dire' than any of us thought

    SNIP

WASHINGTON — Mass extinctions of species in the world's oceans are inevitable if current trends of overfishing, habitat loss, global warming and pollution continue, a panel of renowned marine scientists warned Tuesday.

The combination of problems suggests there's a brewing worldwide die-off of species that would rival past mass extinctions, the 27 scientists said in a preliminary report presented to the United Nations.

Vanishing species — from sea turtles to coral — would upend the ocean's ecosystem. Fish are the main source of protein for a fifth of the world's population and the seas cycle oxygen and help absorb carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas from human activities.

"Things seem to be going wrong on several different levels," said Carl Lundin, director of global marine programs at the International Union for Conservation of Nature, which helped produce the report with the International Programme on the State of the Ocean.

Some of the changes affecting the world's seas — which have been warned about individually in the past — are happening faster than the worst case scenarios that were predicted just a few years ago, the report said.

"It was a more dire report than any of us thought because we look at our own little issues," Lundin said. "When you put them all together, it's a pretty bleak situation."

    Climate and coral

Coral deaths alone would be considered a mass extinction, according to study chief author Alex Rogers of the University of Oxford. A single bleaching event in 1998 killed one-sixth of the world's tropical coral reefs.

Lundin pointed to deaths of 1,000-year-old coral in the Indian Ocean and called it "really unprecedented."

"Not only are we already experiencing severe declines in many species to the point of commercial extinction in some cases, and an unparalleled rate of regional extinctions of habitat types (e.g. mangroves and seagrass meadows), but we now face losing marine species and entire marine ecosystems, such as coral reefs, within a single generation," the experts said.

    END SNIP. FOR MORE: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43479398/ns/world_news-world_environment/

Giant squid carcasses invade Calif. coastline

(CBS/AP) Giant squid - some weighing as much as 20 pounds - have been washing up on beaches in Orange County the past few days delighting (or perhaps horrifying) locals.
There are hundreds of squid carcasses washed up on beaches all over San Clemente and Oceanside.

While people walking on beaches might not be fond of stepping on the squid, or trying to dodge them, fisherman in Newport Beach couldn't be happier with their catch of the day.

NEW ORLEANS — Contrary to public perception that last summer's BP oil spill did little damage to marine life in Louisiana, a new study says a common fish in the marshes was hurt severely by the spill and now is turning up deformed and may be unable to reproduce properly.

The study, led by a team of scientists from Louisiana State University, found what scientists call "sub-lethal" effects to killifish, a small but abundant species found in Louisiana's marshes and used as bait by fishermen. Sub-lethal effects are those that pop up as animals grow. Researchers said the fish are showing signs of damage even though the amount of oil in their tissues and in the water where they were sampled was extremely low or not even detectable.

Massive Estero Bay fish kill a mystery
    Nov. 26, 2011

It’s a mystery: Something is killing mullet in Estero Bay, but nobody knows what.

Katie McFarland, an FGCU graduate student, first saw large numbers of dead mullet floating in the bay and washed up along the shoreline Friday.

Saturday morning, McFarland took another trip onto the bay to take water samples and saw hundreds of mullet between FGCU’s Vester Field Station and New Pass.

“From what I’ve heard, it’s the whole bay,” she said. “I’ve yet to see anything but mullet. It’s crazy, the numbers of them.”

Soon after he made that comment, McFarland found one dead Atlantic spadefish.

One suspect is red tide, a natural phenomenon that occurs when the toxic single-cell alga Karenia brevis undergoes a population explosion, or bloom.

To determine the strength of a red tide, scientists take water samples and count the number of Karenia cells per liter of water.

Fish can start dying when concentrations are “low,” 10,000 to 100,000 cells per liter; the effects of medium concentrations, 100,000 to 1 million cells, are “probable fish kills.”

20 tons of dead fish wash up on Norway beaches- cause of massive fishkill unknown
    January 2, 2012

January 2, 2012 – NORWAY – The inhabitants of Troms could hardly believe their eyes on the morning of New Year’s Eve, a very large amount, an estimated 10 to 20 tons of dead herring washed up on the beach, writes Northern Lights. Tromsø city is the ninth largest urban area in Norway by population. The city is warmer than most other places located on the same latitude, due to the warming effect of the Gulf Stream which originates at the tip of Florida. Various theories abound for the incident but no one knows for sure what’s happened in the popular hiking area in Nordreisa municipality. However, various theories have been tossed around, explains Jan-Petter Jorgensen (44), who stumbled upon the mass death in sight on the beach with his dog Molly. People say that something similar happened in the 80′s, and there is speculation among others on the river which flows into the ocean behind a promontory on the site, may have had something to do with it. Maybe the fish have been caught in a deprived oxygen environment, and then died of fresh water? Jorgensen estimates each individual fish to be of 100-150 grams, and that the total might be about up to 20 tons. Now he’s worried about what might happen if no one comes and removing carcasses. -Dagbladet -translated
