Quite a sight along the shores of Lake Champlain-- there's been a massive fish kill.

Alewives have washed ashore at the sandbar in Milton. Vermont Fish and Wildlife biologists estimate that tens of thousands of the nonnative species have died due to stress caused by frigid temperatures.

Officials were trying to determine Tuesday what caused thousands of sardines to turn up dead in Ventura Harbor, another puzzling case of fish that died off after apparently using up all their oxygen.

REDWOOD CITY (KCBS) – Researchers said Friday they are baffled why a dozen leopard sharks died in tide pools and sloughs off Redwood City over the last several days.
Canals that regulate tide flow may be preventing the sharks, which usually grow about five feet long, from escaping some kind of toxic discharge or other manmade pollution source, said Sean Van Sommeran with the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation in Santa Cruz.

A mystery is brewing on Manatee County's beautiful beaches -- researchers are trying to figure out why sharks are washing ashore dead.

Hundreds of fish were killed after a fire destroyed a Martinelli's apple storage facility in Watsonville, state wildlife officials said.

MORIAH, N.Y. — Crews are cleaning up the thousands of dead fish that have washed up along Lake Champlain's New York shoreline, including a stretch where public campgrounds and beaches are being prepared for opening this spring.

Lakeside residents in Vermont began reporting thousands of dead alewives showing up along the shore earlier this month. Vermont fisheries biologists say alewives, a species not native to the lake, are sensitive to frigid temperatures and likely died off during the winter.

Miami (CNN) -- Rescuers worked feverishly Friday to save some of the pilot whales who stranded themselves in shallow waters near the Florida Keys.

At least 21 pilot whales were found in an area about 20 miles north of Key West, according to officials with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Officials said 13 whales are dead and the count might climb.

Several others were being treated at a holding pen at a marina in Cudjoe Key, Florida, they said.

"It's a way to control the situation and to serve as protection for the volunteers and for the animals," said Karrie Carnes, a NOAA spokeswoman with the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

By about 4 a.m. Friday a team of about 50 people were able to get six of the whales into the safer area and were protecting them with a sea pen they had created, said Art Cooper, vice chairman of the Marine Mammal Conservancy.

Rescuers ushered two more to safety later that afternoon.

Officials said If any of the whales are healthy enough to be released, that will happen sometime Saturday. They will be loaded onto a boat and taken far out to sea for release. Others may be taken to rehab facility in Key Largo.

The whales were spread out in about a four-mile area in waters that were as shallow as three inches in some areas.

The situation for the animals was dire because mass strandings can be a sign of some kind of sickness in some of the whales, Cooper said. Also, being stuck in shallow waters makes them vulnerable to predators.

"It is a bad situation for them when they get in the shallows and thrash around and bloody themselves," Cooper said. "If there is nobody to intervene for them they will die."

Dozens of leopard sharks have been washing up dead in California since April, and now a necropsy shows at least one of the sharks died of massive internal bleeding, such that blood was even coming out of the shark's skin, according to a Daily News report.
