Hundreds of dead fish wash up on Alabama beaches
March 29, 2011 – ALABAMA — Months after the hundreds of birds fell dead from the sky and after thousands of dead fish, crabs, sardines, dolphins, and whales washed ashore worldwide, more dead fish washed ashore in Alabama, and a dead whale washed ashore in Virginia. There’s still no cause for the hundreds of dead fish that were found dead along the gulf shores over the weekend. They were also found along the gulf state pier Saturday morning. Park officials said it was unusual to see spade fish in that area this early in the year. The dead sigh spanned about three miles of shoreline. The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will take the fish in for testing. In Sandbridge, VA, the carcass of a Sei whale was found Sunday morning. The whale measured 35 to 40 feet long. Staffers from the Virginia Beach Aquarium were called to the site so that it could be secured and would not wash back into the ocean. The aquarium is planning to perform a necropsy on the dead animal to determine a cause of death. Sei whales are not common to the Virginia Beach area. –KTSM

Massive fish kill in Lake Champlain

Quite a sight along the shores of Lake Champlain-- there's been a massive fish kill.

Alewives have washed ashore at the sandbar in Milton. Vermont Fish and Wildlife biologists estimate that tens of thousands of the nonnative species have died due to stress caused by frigid temperatures.

Dead Leopard Sharks Found In Redwood City Lagoons

    April 22, 2011

REDWOOD CITY (KCBS) – Researchers said Friday they are baffled why a dozen leopard sharks died in tide pools and sloughs off Redwood City over the last several days.
Canals that regulate tide flow may be preventing the sharks, which usually grow about five feet long, from escaping some kind of toxic discharge or other manmade pollution source, said Sean Van Sommeran with the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation in Santa Cruz.

On the news this morning they said that the fire was deemed accidental. It was the foam that they used to put out the fire that really did the trick. To their credit, the fire department contacted "environmental experts". They were given permission to use the foam, because if they had used only water, the amount of flow into the area would have caused even more damage.

Regardless, these are more of our precious Earth family being killed off in the name of progress.

Lakeside NY town hauls away thousands of dead fish

MORIAH, N.Y. — Crews are cleaning up the thousands of dead fish that have washed up along Lake Champlain's New York shoreline, including a stretch where public campgrounds and beaches are being prepared for opening this spring.

Lakeside residents in Vermont began reporting thousands of dead alewives showing up along the shore earlier this month. Vermont fisheries biologists say alewives, a species not native to the lake, are sensitive to frigid temperatures and likely died off during the winter.

    – May 1, 2011

The Department of Conservation is staying tight-lipped over the deaths of a group of penguins on the East Coast. At least 14 have been found washed up along Waihau Bay. Anti-oil protesters claim seismic testing in the Raukumara Basin is to blame. DOC is choosing to stay out of the debate until it knows for certain the cause of death. It said there was a range of reasons why they could have died, and will not comment...

Miami (CNN) -- Rescuers worked feverishly Friday to save some of the pilot whales who stranded themselves in shallow waters near the Florida Keys.

At least 21 pilot whales were found in an area about 20 miles north of Key West, according to officials with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Officials said 13 whales are dead and the count might climb.

Several others were being treated at a holding pen at a marina in Cudjoe Key, Florida, they said.

"It's a way to control the situation and to serve as protection for the volunteers and for the animals," said Karrie Carnes, a NOAA spokeswoman with the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

By about 4 a.m. Friday a team of about 50 people were able to get six of the whales into the safer area and were protecting them with a sea pen they had created, said Art Cooper, vice chairman of the Marine Mammal Conservancy.

Rescuers ushered two more to safety later that afternoon.

Officials said If any of the whales are healthy enough to be released, that will happen sometime Saturday. They will be loaded onto a boat and taken far out to sea for release. Others may be taken to rehab facility in Key Largo.

The whales were spread out in about a four-mile area in waters that were as shallow as three inches in some areas.

The situation for the animals was dire because mass strandings can be a sign of some kind of sickness in some of the whales, Cooper said. Also, being stuck in shallow waters makes them vulnerable to predators.

"It is a bad situation for them when they get in the shallows and thrash around and bloody themselves," Cooper said. "If there is nobody to intervene for them they will die."

KEY LARGO, Fla., May 8 (UPI) -- Marine rescue personnel say they returned two stranded adult male pilot whales to the Atlantic Ocean about 9 miles from the Florida coast.

The two whales were part of a pod of at least 21 that stranded Thursday, The Miami Herald reported Sunday. Rescuers said the two whales released Saturday were in "robust" condition.

"It was just amazing," said Suzy Roebling, a staff member with the non-profit Marine Mammal Conservancy in Key Largo.
