Yes, the judgement is shocking for multiple reasons. Even those who were predicting mega quakes in the US last year where nothing happened were vilified. Nature has its own timetable and much of it is not scheduled on anyone's individual calendar.

Ive just heard that given the failures of the prosecuted scientists, the Italian authorities have employed Cliff High, Patrick Geryl and a variety of other pseudo scientists, chanelers and other cranks to accurately predict future earthquakes thereby ensuring the safety of the local citizens from any such random events in the future.

Sending scientists to prison for misstating earthquake risk is not a great way to encourage others to take responsibility in future

Punishing scientists for not predicting what is today unpredictable . So from recent data of high earthquake activity scientists should predict a BIG Event . Only lunatic lawyers could arrive at the guilty verdict .
The corrupt politicians that run Italy will never find a single qualified person to venture an opinion on Earthquakes .
