Bunker popularity reached fever pitch during WW1 and WW2 for obvious reasons. Over time a number were abandon, stripped and forgotten. Some however were developed further. Now, in recent times there seems to be a resurgence.

In the Italian Alps there are secret military bases hidden in the mountains .
What happens is that when a military plane is arriving one side of the mountain
opens up a disguised sliding door . After the plane has landed the sliding door closes .
Those bases are deep in the mountains and can be only accessed by planes or helicopters or many days of hard walk and mountain climbing .
