This Day in the Maya Calendar
Cholq'ij, the Maya sacred ceremonial calendar of 260 days—a cycle of 20 Day deities and 13 numbers—is the basis of the Maya spirituality that survives to this time, practiced daily among millions of Maya people, in thousands of communities. The interpretation of the days can vary from one Maya people to another. The interpretations given here are based on sustained conversations and participation over three decades with Maya Q'eqchi calendar priest Roderico Teni and daykeeping families in the area of Cobán, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, by Jose Barreiro (Taíno), head of NMAI’s Office of Latin America, and his wife, Katsi Cook (Mohawk).

For more background to this series, please see Jose's introduction, "Living in the Practice." For further insight into the role of the Day lords in everyday life, please see the Maya Journal. For the complete year so far, please see the Maya calendar archive.

This Day in the Maya Calendar Cholq'ij, the Maya sacred ceremonial calendar of 260 days Empty Re: This Day in the Maya Calendar Cholq'ij, the Maya sacred ceremonial calendar of 260 days

Post  THEeXchanger Thu Mar 01, 2012 2:12 pm

13 numbers + 20 glyphs = 260 - the number of days, a baby sits within its mother womb

The Thirteen Numbers of the Cholq'ij

The 13 numbers are conceptualized similar to a pyramid.

From numbers 1 to 7 we are climbing with much effort.

At the number 8 we are in a position where perfect harmony is possible and on the top of the pyramid,

and 9 to 13 is directed downhill, creating more ease with the energies, as they are no longer so forceful in developing us.

This varies slightly between men and women: for men, 8 is considered to be the top of the pyramid

as they are considered to typically be more balanced physically and have to struggle more to reach the spiritual levels than women,

where 9 is the top of the pyramid,

where they are typically thought to be slightly less stable in the physical realms but have an easier time accessing the spiritual.

1 Great force and power. The first gear, (like compound) but it does not flow easily. Unity. The first Force is complete. Force of creation.

2 Polarized, yet in balance. Two energies, positive and negative. Polarity

3 The addition of creative right brain energy, Results in what one does.

4 The balance. The four energies, elements of the 3 dimensional universes: wind; water; earth and fire. Solidarity. Balance. Elements. Four planes of manifestation: physical; mental; emotional and spiritual.

5 Elevation of creation. The 5th element, Ether. Is a helper to # 8 Work. The action energy.

6 Imbalances. Many tests and things to evolve to, and work to develop. The physical world, the body. The tests are to develop, refine, learn balance and overcome.

7 Energy to catalyze. Great power versus great temptation. A final test, and step, before the summit. Equilibrium, harmony. A force that can harmonize.

8 Complete energies of the material world. The top of the pyramid. A world of male authority. Energy of arts and Creativity. The highest Male energy.

9 A world of female strength, it has 9 levels within and represents the emotional, intuitive, the artist. Power of realization and the creative energies, highest vibration of the female energy.

10 Creativity - flowing. The law, the authority.

11 Energy that has many tests and payments. More of a spiritual and mental order. It is the test to transmute to knowledge. Action of dividing, sorting Separating, putting in order, sharing.

12 Strong energy that ignites because 12 is a spiritual catalyst. The group, the family, the association.

13 The foundation and base of the pyramid. Realization and transmutation. The magic of being able to change and create, Governs all the other numbers.

    THE DAY
This is the first day of the Mayan calendar. B'atz is the start, the beginning, the time; it is the day of the perpetual ceremonies and customs of our ancestors. This day is utilized to effect matrimonial and business ties, it's a good day to bring things into order or to initiate any plans. It is a good day to ask for: predictions, protection for the artist, well being for the crops, to resolve any family problems. Bat'z predicts the future; it is the history that is weaved into time, just like with a thread you weave a dress. It is the human gestation time for a child, it represents the umbilical cord. It is the beginning of life, of the infinite time, of the intelligence and wisdom. It symbolizes the cosmic phenomena, the original wisdom. It represents the infinite time and the unity, through this the man and woman are united and from this originates matrimony. Before the Mayas found the thread they used the palm (tree) (pop) to weave. This is the reason why it is called "Pop" the history written in the POP WUJ (sacred book with quiche origin). In the vegetation Bat'z is symbolized with plants that climb. This color is related with the subtlety of the mind and helps to develop internal powers for vision and revelations in the dreams. It is the color that seeks opportunities in every sense. Baby Blue is intimately connected with green and the color blue. Baby Blue is the color that gives opportunities in studies and in work. Use this color to work with people that have everything turning out wrong for themselves.

Green: Green is the color for hope. It is the one that solidifies opportunities, especially those that have to do with the material, be it with property or work. Green is also the color that gives success in the profession (career). This color gives abundance in the material and nature as a manifestation of reality.

Blue: Blue is the color of fortune, it is to say the one that solidifies everything that has to do with finances. Blue should be used when there are material problems or to support businesses and projects so they may have better finances. Together with Baby Blue and green, Blue gives the opportunity to realize and proportion material well being. Normally it should be used in a sequential order for this purpose:
    * The colors Blue, Baby Blue, and White help to develop spiritual powers like intuition, vision and ubiquity in the Najt (space-time).

Purple: Purple is used to do away with bad thoughts, illnesses and problems of the mind. This color is the true healer and cuts any energy. Purple can be used when none of the other colors work for specific illnesses, regardless of gender or age. It is a color that cleanses and opens paths. Purple is somewhat similar to the energy of the color black without being confrontative.

    Cholq'ij (Tzolkin) Calendar

    Thursday, December 23 2004

    Contributed by: Admin
NOTE: SAQ' BE' IS NOT CURRENTLY DISTRIBUTING CHOLQ'IJ CALENDARS. THIS ARTICLE IS HERE FOR INFORMATION PURPOSES ONLY.

As many of you know, every year Saq' Be' travels to the community in Chichicastenango, Guatemala to pick up the traditional Mayan Cholq'ij calendars they produce.
We return with them and make them available for sale, returning the profits to the community to support their continued efforts to keep the traditional ways alive.

Unfortunately, we do not know when we will be able to return this year and are thus uncertain as to when the 2005 calendars will become available. As a way of compensating for our lack of hard copy calendars, we are making available the same Cholq'ij/ Gregorian overlay on our website, which can be viewed on the front page. We have also made available information on the meaning of the Nawales (glyphs) and numbers presented. Click "read more" to view additional infromation on this calendar. We ask you to please consider supporting Saq' Be', a nonprofit organization, by making a tax-exempt donation to assist with our continued efforts for the rescue, preservation and appropriate sharing of these living ancient peoples, traditions and cultures.

This information about the Cholq'ij was produced by an Indigenous group of Mayan Ajq'ij (priests) in Chichicastenango, Guatemala: Fundacion Centro Cultural y Asistencia Maya (C.C.A.M.). We give thank for their efforts in keeping the traditions alive and for their welcoming arms and open hearts. We give special thanks to "Chema" who has shared his knowledge and wisdom with us openly and has been of great assistance in bridging the knowledge of the ancient and the modern.

    INTERPRETATION OF THE MAYAN CALENDAR
The Mayan calendars were idealized by the astronomers and spiritual guides based on the movement of the blue bodies of the universe. The Mayan scientists were very studious and very observant. They were able to measure movement, the velocity of every asteroid, then establishing systems that allowed them to register time and other natural events. They were able to make the calendar which allowed them to give orientation to the cycle of agriculture production, giving origin to social time and the time of the individual destiny.

THE CHOLQ'IJ: SACRED CALENDAR OF 260 DAYS
The Cholq'ij "Book of the days" or "Thread of the days", begins on B'atz and ends on Tz'i. This "Book of days" is used today as it was put together by the ancient Mayas. For divination and the establishment of time, for the manifestation of ceremonies of commemoration and for protection, as well as for the times of celebration and spiritual crisis.
The Cholq'ij is immersed in the universe and in the elements of mother nature, necessary for life; the fire, earth, water, air; in the cycle of life of some beings still alive and other fundamental aspects of our culture; the women (I'x), the dawn (Aq'ab'al), and the death (Kame).

The Cholq'ij, or the sacred calendar, consists of 260. It is formed by 20 days that are combined with numbers from 1 to 13 placed before the 20 glyphs of the days. Once finished with the #13, it begins once again with the #1, until reaching #13 again, this way consecutively. We can say that the sacred calendar is composed of 13 months that hold 20 days. (13+20=260)

Why are the numbers 13 and 20 used? The ancestors used and considered these numbers as sacred.

The number 13 is sacred because the most important joints in the body are; the two at the ankles, two at the knees, two at the hips, two at the wrist, two at the elbows, two at the shoulders and one at the head or neck.

As far as the number 20, this symbolizes the 20 fingers of the human being; 10 on the hands and 10 on the feet.

In these 20 sacred words are expressed all of the basic forces of creation and destruction, the good and the that are in the world, in society, in the family and what is in the heart of the human. The unity of such forces in the individual lives depends on the course of life and destiny.

The signs of the 20 days of the Cholq'ij are: B'atz', E, Aj, I'x , Tz'ikin, Ajmaq, No'j, Tijax, Kawooq, Ajpu', Imox, Iq', Aq'ab'al, Kat, Kan, Kame, Kej, Q'anil, Toj, T'zi'.
If we add, to the 260 day sacred calendar, 13 more days, there is a total of 273 days, which is the same time for human gestation, from conception to birth, the sacred time for development of the human being in the mother's womb.

Below are some resources that are very helpful to understanding and working with the Cholq'ij calendar to create the balance and harmony that is needed at this time:

--Traditionally, when a child was born, and Ajq'ij would look at that child's birth chart using the Cholq'ij to determine that child's purpose. Although this proccess is intricate and requires years of training, it is often helpful to know the enerrgy at the time of birth, the equivalent of what is known as your "heart sign".

( To find out what this energy was at your time of birth, you may look further down this thread, and, i will post a conversation chart )

Mayan Elders Weigh in as 2012 Dawns AND SAY 2012 IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD.

Posted by T.I.P.P Founder on January 4, 2012 at 8:10amView Blog

For years civilization has been living in the shadow of some unknown event to take place on December 21st 2012 as the Mayan calendar comes to an end. Unlike previous doomsday prophecies which were made only a few years prior to the date coming to pass, the general consensus on the 2012 phenomenon is that the calendar has been around for thousands of years and is only now coming to an end. But with less than a year now left before the Mayan calendar ends, we are left asking ourselves if the modern interpretations are truly representative of what the calendar professes will happen. And so it stands to reason that we may want to hear what the current Mayan elders have to say about the whole thing.

One man making the rounds and interviewing the elders of both the Mayan and Hopi traditions is Drunvalo Melchizedek. He has interviewed elders from both communities and has come to some startling conclusions that suggest what we think may be completely off base for the true Mayan calendar. He states that the date December 21, 2012 is not the exact date corresponding to "the end of the world" as many have suggested, but indicates a massive landmark for when some major changes in consciousness and consensus reality will take place - and not all will necessarily be bad.

Melchizedek, an author from Sedona, Arizona has written a number of pieces on the subject of spiritual transformation, including one on the 2012 date itself as well as a two volume book that includes information on the lost cities of Atlantis and Lemuria. But can he shed any light on what the Mayans say about the suspected end of the world date later this year?

One of the key components to look for in the Mayan calendar is the appearance of a massive blue star. In 2011 one of the largest stories in new age circles was the appearance of the comet Elenin, which looked very similar to a blue star from Earth. Could this have been the star spoken of in the Mayan prophecy? But in 2007 another blue comet, 17P/Holmes appeared in the night sky became more bright by a factor of nearly a million which could be seen easily by those on the ground unaided by telescopes.

Given that historians believe telescope was created in 1608, it's difficult to imagine the star they were talking about would be impossible to spot from Earth thousands of years ago when the Mayan calendar was originally created. This suggests that the object, whichever one it may be, would have been visible to the naked eye to those waiting on the ground. For a brief moment in time in November of that year, the comet 17P/Holmes even had an area of dispersion even larger than the sun itself. It seems little could compare to the incredible size of a comet so profoundly huge as that, and it did pick an odd time-frame to appear just five years almost to the day before the Mayan calendar would be up.

While many are claiming insider knowledge that ultimately confirms the exact details of the events in the following year, it seems there is still very little in the way of consensus on what will actually happen. Regardless, as 2012 quickly accelerates we will be examining the facts and attempting to solve this mystery before it comes to pass. 2012 has begun.

What the Mayan Elders are Saying About 2012 by Carlos Barrios IT IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD

Carlos Barrios, Mayan elder and Ajq'ij (is a ceremonial priest and spiritual guide) of the Eagle Clan. Carlos initiated an investigation into the different Mayan calendars circulating. Carlos along with his brother Gerardo studied with many teachers and interviewed nearly 600 traditional Mayan elders to widen their scope of knowledge.

Carlos found out quickly there were several conflicting interpretations of Mayan hieroglyphs, petroglyphs, Sacred Books of 'Chilam Balam' and various ancient text. Carlos found some strong words for those who may have contributed to the confusion:

Carlos Barrios: "Anthropologists visit the temple sites and read the inscriptions and make up stories about the Maya, but they do not read the signs correctly. It's just their imagination. Other people write about prophecy in the name of the Maya. They say that the world will end in December 2012. The Mayan elders are angry with this. The world will not end. It will be transformed."

"We are no longer in the World of the Fourth Sun, but we are not yet in the World of the Fifth Sun. This is the time in-between, the time of transition. As we pass through transition there is a colossal, global convergence of environmental destruction, social chaos, war, and ongoing Earth Changes."

He continues: "Humanity will continue, but in a different way. Material structures will change. From this we will have the opportunity to be more human. We are living in the most important era of the Mayan calendars and prophecies. All the prophecies of the world, all the traditions are converging now. There is no time for games. The spiritual ideal of this era is action."

Carlos tells us: "The indigenous have the calendars and know how to accurately interpret it -- not others. The Mayan Calendars comprehension of time, seasons, and cycles has proven itself to be vast and sophisticated. The Maya understand 17 different calendars such as the Tzolk'in or Cholq'ij, some of them charting time accurately over a span of more than ten million years.

"All was predicted by the mathematical cycles of the Mayan calendars. -- It will change --everything will change. Mayan Day-keepers view the Dec. 21, 2012 date as a rebirth, the start of the World of the Fifth Sun. It will be the start of a new era resulting from and signified by the solar meridian crossing the galactic equator and the Earth aligning itself with the center of the galaxy."

At sunrise on December 21, 2012 for the first time in 26,000 years the Sun rises to conjunct the intersection of the Milky Way and the plane of the ecliptic. This cosmic cross is considered to be an embodiment of the Sacred Tree, The Tree of Life, a tree remembered in all the world's spiritual traditions.

Some observers say this alignment with the heart of the galaxy in 2012 will open a channel for cosmic energy to flow through the Earth, cleansing it and all that dwells upon it, raising all to a higher level of vibration. Carlos reminds us: "This process has already begun. Change is accelerating now and it will continue to accelerate.

If the people of the Earth can get to this 2012 date in good shape without having destroyed too much of the Earth, we will rise to a new, higher level. But to get there we must transform enormously powerful forces that seek to block the way."

The date specified in the calendar Winter Solstice in the year 2012 does not mark the end of the world. Many outside people writing about the Mayan calendar sensationalize this date, but they do not know. The ones who know are the indigenous elders who are entrusted with keeping the tradition.

Carlos tells us: "The economy now is a fiction. The first five-year stretch of transition from August 1987 to August 1992 was the beginning of the destruction of the material world. We have progressed ten years deeper into the transition phase by now, and many of the so-called sources of financial stability are in fact hollow. The banks are weak. This is a delicate moment for them. They could crash globally, if we don't pay attention. Now, people are paying attention."

The North and South Poles are both breaking up. The level of the water in the oceans is going to rise. But at the same time land in the ocean, especially near Cuba, is also going to rise. Carlos tells a story about the most recent Mayan New Year ceremonies in Guatemala. He said that one respected Mam elder, who lives all year in a solitary mountain cave, journeyed to Chichicastenango to speak with the people at the ceremony. The elder delivered a simple, direct message. He called for human beings to come together in support of life and light.

"Right now each person and group is going his or her own way. The elder of the mountains said there is hope if the people of the light can come together and unite in some way. We live in a world of polarity -- day and night, man and woman, positive and negative. Light and darkness need each other. They are a balance."
"Just now the dark side is very strong, and very clear about what they want. They have their vision and their priorities clearly held, and also their hierarchy. They are working in many ways so that we will be unable to connect with the spiral Fifth World in 2012."

"On the light side everyone thinks they are the most important, that their own understandings, or their group's understandings, are the key. There's a diversity of cultures and opinions, so there is competition, diffusion, and no single focus."

Carlos believes the dark side works to block unity through denial and materialism. It also works to destroy those who are working with the light to get the Earth to a higher level. They like the energy of the old, declining Fourth World, the materialism. They do not want it to change. They do not want unity. They want to stay at this level, and are afraid of the next level.

The dark power of the declining Fourth World cannot be destroyed or overpowered. It's too strong and clear for that, and that is the wrong strategy. The dark can only be transformed when confronted with simplicity and open-heartedness. This is what leads to unity, a key concept for the World of the Fifth Sun.

Carlos said the emerging era of the Fifth Sun will call attention to a much-overlooked element. Whereas the four traditional elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water have dominated various epochs in the past, there will be a fifth element to reckon with in the time of the Fifth Sun --- that element is 'ETHER'.

The dictionary defines Ether as a "hypothetical substance supposed to occupy all space, postulated to account for the propagation of electromagnetic radiation through space." Perhaps it could be defined as the "space between space". I would suggest it could be manifest as the alignment of charged particles from our solar system (Sun), and our galaxy (Milky Way) surge. The Ether element represents spiritual energy.

"The element of the Fifth Sun is celestial. Within the context of Ether there can be a joining of the polarities. No more darkness or light in the people, but an uplifted unity. But right now the realm of darkness is not interested in this. They are organized to block it. They seek to unbalance the Earth and its environment so we will be unready for the alignment in 2012."

"We need to work together for peace, and balance with the other side. We need to take care of the Earth that feeds and shelters us. We need to put our entire mind and heart into pursuing unity and unity now, to confront the other side and preserve life."
"We are disturbed -- we can't play anymore. Our planet can be renewed or ravaged. Now is the time to awaken and take action. Everyone is needed. You are not here for no reason. Everyone who is here now has an important purpose. This is a hard but a special time. We have the opportunity for growth, but we must be ready for this moment in history."

Carlos says: "The prophesied changes are going to happen, but our attitude and actions determine how harsh or mild they are. We need to act, to make changes, and to elect people to represent us who understand and who will take political action to respect the Earth."

"Meditation and spiritual practice are good, but also action. It's very important to be clear about who you are, and also about your relation to the Earth. Develop yourself according to your own tradition and the call of your heart. But remember to respect differences, and strive for unity. Eat wisely --- a lot of food is corrupt in either subtle or gross ways. Pay attention to what you are taking into your body. Learn to preserve food, and to conserve energy. Learn some good breathing techniques, so you have mastery of your breath. Be clear. Follow a tradition with great roots. It is not important what tradition, your heart will tell you, but it must have great roots."

"We live in a world of energy. An important task at this time is to learn to sense or see the energy of everyone and everything -- people, plants, animals. This becomes increasingly important as we draw close to the World of the Fifth Sun, for it is associated with the element 'ether' -- the realm where energy lives and weaves. Go to the sacred places of the Earth to pray for peace, and have respect for the Earth which gives us our food, clothing, and shelter. We need to reactivate the energy of these sacred places. That is our work."

"One simple but effective prayer technique is to light white or baby-blue colored candles. Think of a moment in peace. Speak your intention to the flame and send the light of it on to the leaders who have the power to make war or peace."
Carlos reminds us this is a crucially important moment for humanity and for Earth. Each person is important.

He said the elders have opened the doors so that other races can come to the Mayan world to receive the tradition. "The Maya have long appreciated and respected that there are other colors, other races, and other spiritual systems. They know that the destiny of the Mayan world is related to the destiny of the whole world."

"The greatest wisdom is in simplicity. Love, respect, tolerance, sharing, gratitude, forgiveness. It's not complex or elaborate. The real knowledge is free. It's encoded in your DNA. All you need is within you. Great teachers have said that from the beginning. Find your heart, and you will find your way."
