Tepco is planning on dumping all of the radioactive water stored at Fukushima into the ocean.

The industry-controlled nuclear regulators are pushing for dumping the radiation, as well.

As EneNews reports:

Juan Carlos Lentijo, head of IAEA’s mission to Fukushima Daiichi, Dec. 4, 2013: “Controlled discharge is a regular practice in all the nuclear facilities in the world. And what we are trying to say here is to consider this as one of the options to contribute to a good balance of risks and to stabilize the facility for the long term.”

Shunichi Tanaka, chairman of Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority, Dec. 4, 2013: “You cannot keep storing the water forever. We have to make choice comparing all risks involved.”

Xinhua, Dec. 4, 2013: Lentijo said that TEPCO should weigh the possible damaging effects of discharging toxic water against the total risks involved in the overall decommissioning work process. [...] Tanaka highlighted the fact that while highly radioactive water could be decontaminated in around seven years, the amount of water containing tritium will keep rising, topping 700,000 tons in two years. [...] nuclear experts have repeatedly pointed out that [tritium] is still a significant radiation hazard when inhaled, ingested via food or water, or absorbed through the skin. [...] fisherman, industries and fisheries bodies in the Fukushima area and beyond in Japan’s northeast, have collectively baulked at the idea of releasing toxic water into the sea [...] TEPCO will be duty-bound to submit assessments of the safety and environmental impact [...]

NHK, Dec. 4, 2013: IAEA team leader Juan Carlos Lentijo [...] said it is necessary and indispensable to assess the impact the tritium discharge might have on human health and the environment, and to get government approval as well as consent from concerned people.

Japan Times, Dec. 4, 2013: “Of course . . . public acceptance for this purpose is necessary,” said Lentijo, adding strict monitoring of the impact of the discharge would also be essential.

AFP, Dec. 4, 2013: [L]ocal fishermen, neighbouring countries and environmental groups all oppose the idea.

In the real world, there is no safe level of radiation.

And there are alternatives.

Dr. Arjun Makhijani – a recognized expert on nuclear power, who has testified before Congress, served as an expert witness in Nuclear Regulatory Commission proceedings, and been interviewed by many of the largest news organizations – told PBS in March:

We actually sent a proposal to Japan two years ago, some colleagues of mine and I, saying you should park a supertanker or a large tanker offshore, and put the water in it, and send it off someplace else so that the water treatment and the water management is not such a huge, constant issue. But [the Japanese declined].

Tepco – with no financial incentive to actually fix things – has been insanely irresponsible and has only been pretending to contain Fukushima. And see this.

Unfortunately, Japan has devolved into crony capitalism … and even tyranny.

So instead of doing something to contain the radiation, they’re going to dump it.

Fukushima? 98% Of The Pacific Ocean Floor Covered By Dead Sea Creatures

According to an absolutely shocking study that has just been released, one area of the Pacific Ocean floor was 98 percent covered by decomposing sea creatures in July 2012. But in March 2012, only 1 percent of that same section of the Pacific Ocean floor was covered by dead sea creatures.
The scientists that are studying this section of the ocean floor have never seen anything quite like this before. And when you consider this in conjunction with all of the other reports that have been coming in of sea creatures dying all over the Pacific Ocean, it is only natural to start asking some hard questions.
Could radiation from Fukushima be responsible for all of this death?

NHK, Jan. 28, 2014: [Tepco] is to begin work at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant to stop radioactive wastewater from flowing into the sea. The task of creating underground frozen walls is due to start at the Number 2 and Number 3 reactors on Wednesday. Massive amounts of water are being poured into the reactors [...] and is leaking from the damaged reactor containment vessels. The water has accumulated in the reactor buildings, adjacent turbine buildings and underground tunnels. TEPCO believes the water is leaking from the tunnels, seeping into the ground and reaching the sea. [...] Engineers cannot go there because of the radioactive water [...] TEPCO is also digging wells in the compound to see whether water is leaking directly from the buildings.

Tepco workers Fail: 100 tones of radioactive water ’8 million times above legal limit’ just leaked by mistake
If the problems and incompetence on Tepco’s part continue at the Fukushima nuclear facility, there may eventually be no life left in the pacific basin or the entire western hemisphere for that matter as things are taking a turn for the worst.

JAPAN (INTELLIHUB) — Astonishingly, in an epic fail, Tepco has admitted to spilling 100 tones of radioactive water said to be 8 million times above the legal radiation limit.

“The radioactive water couldn’t have been directed to the tank, because valves that should have been closed, were open” causing the radioactive leak, said a Tepco spokesman regarding the leak.

The utility company spokesman said that he “thinks” only 100 tons were leaked.

To no surprise a Tepco spokesman stated how they “think there has been no leakage into the ocean”.

Others have spoken up saying, as the water leaks into the ocean it will accumulate with all of the other radioactive particles leaked from previous mishaps, concentrating efforts to affect all life in its path for years to come. It was also pointed out in a report how the Japanese government is hiding behind Tepco, using the private utility as a tool to divert blame.

Look up "Fukushima thyroid cancer" on the internet and you will find a legion of horror stories, predictions that thousands of Fukushima children will get cancer. It's little wonder parents like Myuki are scared. But should they be?

At Fukushima University Medical School Professor Shinichi Suzuki leads the team studying the children of Fukushima. A cheerful round-faced man with a grey moustache, Prof Suzuki is frustrated by the constant likening of Fukushima to Chernobyl.

"The first thing to understand is that the amount of radiation released from Fukushima was much lower than at Chernobyl," he said. "Second, the number of children in Fukushima who got a radiation dose above 50 millisieverts is very few, maybe as low as zero."

In other words the highest level of exposure children at Fukushima are thought to have received (50 millisieverts) is at the very lowest end of exposure for children in Chernobyl.

In that case how does Professor Suzuki explain the 33 confirmed cases of thyroid cancer his team have found?

"In Japan there has never been a survey on this scale done before," he said. "Once you start using very sensitive equipment to check for thyroid cancer in a very large group of children then you will inevitably find an increase in the number of cases. That is why we are seeing the increase now. These cases are not related to the nuclear disaster."

Prof Suzuki says his team will need to carry on their work for many more years to be sure that the children of Fukushima are in the clear. But he and other experts now say they think there will be very few, or even zero, extra childhood cancers because of Fukushima.

Really Vidya...what you are saying is that the act of observing/looking creates the situation...if you ignore it the reality doesn't exist. Are you a member of the "Cult Of Scientism"? Only corporate junk science makes any sense?

What I meant to imply is that the government agencies dont really look too closely at the environment, but in not looking they often report it as clean.... my quote was mine, i made it up when i worked for them.. quite a frustrating time for anyone actually wanting to monitor and improve the environment.
Im deeply cynical of most science these days Im afraid...


(edit: however, i am not saying that the act of observing doesnt create situations.. i rather think sometimes it might.   But I dont think this goes as far as wishing away radiation. )
