James Ray Found Guilty of Negligent Homicide in Arizona Sweat Lodge Case


The self-help author James Arthur Ray
was convicted today after he was accused in the deaths of three people during a Sedona, Ariz., sweat lodge ceremony in 2009 and ignoring cries for help as people passed out and vomited.

Ray, 53, was found not guilty in three counts of manslaughter, but was found guilty of the lesser charge of negligent homicide for all
three victims. The case will continue on June 28, when the jury will convene to make a decision regarding aggravating circumstances in the case.

Yavapai County Attorney Sheila Polk claimed Ray's recklessness while presiding over the "Spiritual Warrior" ceremony killed three of
his followers -- Liz Neuman, 49, of Prior Lake, Minn.; James Shore, 40, of Milwaukee; and Kirby Brown, 38, of Westtown, N.Y.. Prosecutors also said Ray conditioned participants through breathing exercises, sleep deprivation, a 36-hour fast and lectures to ignore their bodies' signs of danger.

Ray's attorneys told jurors that the state didn't prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Ray is culpable. They also accused authorities
of botching the investigation and failing to consider that anything other than Ray's actions caused the deaths.

According to the video listed one guy fell into the area of the hot rocks that produced the heat...he was so entranced that he did not want to leave. He wanted to continue on..with the skin completely hanging off his arm. This according to testimony of one of the assistant workers who tried to revive the injured. Crazy indeed

Can you imagine....60 people in one sweat lodge? How can you attend to them?

Another disturbing story about it.......

Kirby Brown was one of three people who died in a Sweat Lodge being run by self-help guru James Arthur Ray. Her story is becoming a centerpiece of the trial, and the picture it paints is disturbing.

Kirby wasn't rich. She could only afford the nearly $10,000 fee by paying all of her life's savings. She did so because she expected Ray's program to turn her life around, to give her things that her life was missing. And when a friend voiced skepticism about Ray's program, she responded: "You just aren't ready for this."

When she got there, she and the others was urged to shave their heads as a symbolic shedding of ego and vanity.

Then there was the exercise where participants were not allowed to speak, and Kirby was forced to play dead for hours after breaking that silence to ask to go to the bathroom. She tried so hard not to wet herself she eventually threw up. She was not allowed to have dinner afterward.

She fasted for 36 hours in the desert.

And then she got into a sweat lodge where she died of heat stroke, organizers apparently unconcerned about the fact that attendees were passing out.

So attendees were told how to present themselves (cutting their hair), public humiliation was used to keep people in line, food was denied as punishment, basic bodily functions were to be denied, and they are all promised great changes if only they follow through the program, submit to Ray's directions, and pay exorbitant fees. In addition, I have no wonder if Ray's rhetoric essentially taught these people that those who didn't go along with it were outsiders, in some ways a threat to their success.

That hits an awful lot of points on the potential destructive cult checklist. And Ray continues to insist he has done nothing at all wrong.

And for those who think that they can purchase sacred space let this be a lesson to them. They entered into a very dangerous situation lead by a dangerous man believing that they could short cut their path.

Shocking, and so very sad

Guess there has always been frauds and with the
Internet they seem to be everywhere. Am reminded
of a man from India who seemed to have a way with
plants. With his "charm" they produced twice as
much, and, for only $200 he'd send you a blessing.
With that blessing in hand and more money you
could attend one of his seminars. Only the blessed
could attend. (This was a CMN interview.)

And then there are the ones that "charm" with their
words and stories.. . .

creating more confusion for those looking for
answers.

James Ray was a guest on Larry King's and Oprah's
shows. He has videos on You Tube. Part of a comment
"wake up world Mr. Ray is coming and I'm by his side!!"
reminds me of "I'm with him thru ice and fire" seen
recently on another web site.

There's not much we can do folks except to send them
ALL, that is, both the fraudsters and victims, our Love
