The forecast map shows contour lines of predicted UV Index values during the solar noon hour. The map is created daily from National Weather Service forecast data. Click the buttons for Day 2, Day 3, or Day 4 to see the UV Index forecast for following days. You may notice a brief delay as each map loads. (To find the time of solar noon at your location, use the sunrise-sunset-solar noon calculator at the NOAA Web site.)

    About UV Index
The ozone layer shields the Earth from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Ozone depletion, as well as seasonal and weather variations, cause different amounts of UV radiation to reach the Earth at any given time. The UV Index, developed by the National Weather Service and EPA, indicates the strength of solar UV radiation on a scale from 1 (low) to 11+ (extremely high).

Every day the National Weather Service calculates the predicted UV Index for the next day in each area of the U.S. This UV Index forecast is published in mid-afternoon (Eastern time zone) at the EPA Web site. If the level of solar UV radiation is predicted to be unusually high, and consequently the risk of overexposure is greater than normal, the forecast includes a UV Alert. Before 2004, the EPA's UV index scale used to go up to 10. In 2004, they raised the maximum level on the scale to 15!

"Prior to 2004, “Extreme” was listed as 8-10+, and now “Extreme” has been shifted from 11 to 15+. With many readings across the United States, according to the EPA, being listed in the “Extreme” range means that something has happened which has increased UV radiation readings."

Atmosphere and magnetosphere are both weak and not up to the task. It's not just UV, by the way - you'll also get microwaves, x-rays and cosmic rays. That's what's wiping out plants and animals worldwide.

Here are some symptoms to watch out for in yourself and others: ear-ringing, pressure headaches, 'night sweats', damage to immune system, abdominal discomfort, swollen thyroid, skin rash, occasional dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea, lethargy, sleeplessness at night, and eventually brain damage, strokes and heart attacks. Also, gametes, eggs and sperm are more likely to suffer DNA damage and cause mutations.

STORM WARNING: NOAA forecasters estimate a greater than 25% chance of geomagnetic storms on June 9th. That's when a CME from the magnificent flare of June 7th is expected to deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras. Aurora alerts
