    US cuts wheat production forecast

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has cut its forecast for global wheat production in 2010-11, but by less than expected.

The department now predicts total output of 643 million tonnes for the current agricultural year, down from its August forecast of 645.7 million.

Analysts had expected an even lower number of 641 million tonnes.

But this still means the USDA expects output to fall 5.5% from last year, mainly because of a drought in Russia

Ukraine - one of the world's leading grain producers - has put a temporary limit on exports Ukraine has set quotas for grain exports following a severe drought in the summer.

The deputy agriculture minister Serhiy Melnyk said the quota would remain in place until the end of the year.

The government will allow the export of two million tonnes of maize, 500,000 tonnes of wheat and 500,000 tonnes of barley.

    this will create Unrest

The United Nations is concerned about food prices and availability.

Rising food prices sparked civil unrest in September, notably in Mozambique where riots over food prices left more than 100 people dead.

Although experts at a UN meeting at the end of last month ruled out a looming world food crisis, they acknowledged that unexpected price rises could threaten food security.

It recommended exploring measures to prevent sudden price upswings.

Wheat pushes world food prices up

The UN says there are different reasons for current high food price levels and the high prices of 2008
The UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) says that world food prices have risen to their highest level in two years.

It says the increase is due partly to a drought in Russia, which has lead to government export restrictions and a shortage of supply of wheat.

Russia extends its grain export ban
This year's crop in Russia could be 40% lower than in 2009 Russia will consider lifting its grain export ban only after the next year's harvest has been reaped, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has said.

Mr Putin did not say when exactly the ban, originally introduced from 15 August to 31 December, would be lifted.

Global wheat prices have risen by 1.4% on Thursday, after gaining more than 3% during the previous session
