Potassium iodate (or iodide) fills up the thyroid with iodine so it won't absorb radioactive iodine present in the fallout. It's often issued to people who live near nuke plants.
I just ordered mine. Unless you expedite, it takes 1-2 weeks for delivery. It's not very expensive, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

The evidence is now overwhelming that there has been a significant explosion accident at the Japanese Fukushima nuclear plant following the loss of coolant to the reactor. The reactor is of the Boiling Water type, which is the same type as the Chernobyl reactor. The detection of high levels of radioactivity and of Caesium-137 near the plant makes it clear that fission radionuclides are being released to the atmosphere.
The quantity of radioactivity, which has been or will be released is not yet known. However it should be appreciated as a matter of extreme urgency that the health consequences of exposure to this type of radiation is extremely serious and that the level of exposure cannot be accurately assessed by making radiation measurements based on absorbed dose. The authorities are already, and will continue to, downplay the potential risks on the basis of a false radiation risk model, that of the International Commission on Radiological Protection. This is an exact replication of the responses to the similar Chernobyl explosion and is driven by the bias in these agencies and authorities towards nuclear energy. The radionuclides released in the Chernobyl accident are the same radionuclides being released from the Fukushima plant. The effects of the Chernobyl accident radioactivity releases have been seen to be devastating and continue to affect the health of the exposed populations as far away from Chernobyl as Europe and the USA. The reason that Geiger absorbed dose type of readings (milliSieverts) cannot be employed as measures of risk is that these kinds of radioactive substances act from within the body or by binding to DNA, thus the dose to the local tissue or DNA can be enormous whilst the average dose recorded by the Geiger counter may be quite low or even barely detectable.
If significant amounts of radioactivity from the Fukushima plume approach populated centres in any country (e.g. the western USA) the advice from the European Committee on Radiation Risk Action Team is as follows:
1. Do not believe the assurances of the radiation protection advisors working for the government. They are false, biased and based on an obsolete model. This is a potenbtial Chernobyl level event and must be seen as extremely serious.
2. Try to obtain if possible a Geiger Counter or similar radiation detector or readings from someone who owns one. If the readings increase to more that twice the normal background in your area or to a level of more than 300nSv/h (300nGy/h) then:
3. Get away as soon as possible to a clean area or if not possible stay indoors and keep all the doors and windows closed for at as long as the radiation levels are higher than normal. Try to keep the house sealed as far as possible.

The vaccines are used to prevent influenza type b infections, which can be fatal if meningitis or pneumonia develop. A Japanese drug panel has since determined no causal connection between the vaccines and the death of the six infants who received the vaccines. Also, no defects in the vaccine batches were discovered. The vaccines remain banned in Japan pending further investigation. The Japanese drug panel, the Safety Countermeasure Committee and Vaccines Adverse Event Committee, has requested further information as to the safety of administering multiple vaccines simultaneously.
Risk Profile The vaccines in question generate billions of dollars of revenue every year for the manufacturers. While the vaccines provide protection, a concern remains as to the risk-benefit analysis of the vaccines. Once concern is that several of the children who died received a combination of other vaccines simultaneously including those for diptheria, pertussis, and tetanus. Multiple vaccines pose a potential drug interaction issue. This concern may lead to changes in vaccine schedules to minimize potential adverse effects. By definition, vaccines introduce toxins into the body in an effort to prevent future illness. At question is whether or not the introduction of the vaccine can be safely handled by the immune system of children who are very young, have received multiple vaccines, or who are immunocompromised. US Supreme Court This is a hot issue in light of a current pending vaccine case in the US Supreme Court, Bruesewitz v. Wyeth. In this case, the US Justice Department is siding with Pfizer pharmaceuticals to limit the liability of pharmaceutical manufacturers in cases of illnesses caused by vaccination. At issue is whether or not a pharmaceutical company is liable if they are aware of a better designed vaccine (one with fewer side effects) yet continue to use the less safe vaccination.
The federal Vaccine Court system provides compensation for vaccine injured persons from the money generated by a tax on vaccine manufacturers. In Bruesewitz v. Wyeth, the parents of Hannah Bruesewtiz were denied compensation in the Vaccine Court system and now seek the right to receive compensation through State court. Six month old Hannah received a DPT (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus) vaccination and immediately suffered a series of 125 seizures over a period of 16 days. Now 18 years of age, Hannah cannot speak or care for herself as a result of her injuries. The vaccine used on Hannah has since been discontinued in favor of safer alternatives. Before the Supreme Court, attorneys for the Bruesewitz family argue that safer alternatives were available at the time Hannah received her vaccine and that the manufacturer had the responsibility of providing the safer alternative and at the very least had the responsibility of providing labeling noting that a safer alternative was available.
Justice Ginsburg showed deep concern in this case, “there were an unusual number of adverse reactions to the particular lot that this child's third vaccine came from, and that those adverse reactions were not disclosed to the doctors. And the doctors -- the child's doctor said if I had known about the unusual number of adverse reactions, I never would have used this vaccine.” Justice Breyer noted that the1986 National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act legally protects drug companies from lawsuits due to unavoidable harm (such as side effects from vaccinations) but that the drug company lawyers in this case are now suggesting that they are also protected from avoidable harm lawsuits. Avoidable harm includes withholding information from the government and the public concerning safer vaccines and also not informing doctors and nurses of high incidences of reactions to particular batches of vaccines. The attorney for the drug company replied that if manufacturers were to be sued for avoidable harm they would be “driven from the market” and she reiterated her position that pharmaceutical manufacturers should only be held liable for manufacturing defects and warning claim issues. Radiation exposure: What we know from Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Radiation exposure is sadly all too familiar to the people of Japan. The health effects of radiation were poorly understood until the United States dropped atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki toward the end of World War II. Prior to that time, scientists had widely mixed views on the impact of radiation exposure.
"There was a strange kind of love-hate attitude about radiation before that," said Dr. William McBride, a professor of radiation oncology at UCLA and a Jonsson Cancer Center researcher who has looked at the consequences of radiation exposure after a radiological or nuclear terrorist attack. "Some people felt radiation was a wonder drug that could cure all illnesses. And there were people who felt that radiation could be quite dangerous."
The aftermath of the bombings of Japan clarified things with certainty, he said. An organization called the Radiation Effects Research Foundation was set up to study the survivors of the bombings. The foundation is a joint effort between the United States and Japan.
"Large numbers of people were exposed to high doses, and they were studied at some depth," McBride said. "We learned an enormous amount from that." Because of those studies, researchers now have a good idea of just how much radiation it takes to produce particular health effects. For example, an exposure of 50,000 microsieverts (µSv)-- a unit that measures the biological effects of radiation -- can lead to nausea and fatigue within hours. A dose of 50,000 µSv causes hair loss within two or three weeks while a dose of 1 million µSv will cause hemorrhage. Death usually occurs at a dose of 4 million µSv.
"In many ways radiation is the one environmental carcinogen that we know an enormous amount about," McBride said. "The risk estimates that were developed as a result of these exposures [at Hiroshima and Nagasaki] are quite precise. Every other kind of incident is compared with that."
The rate so far experienced by Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors is about 0.08 fatal cancers per sievert of dose, as estimated by the the U.S. National Academy of Sciences Committee on the Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation. In comparison, a chest X-ray produces radiation in the amount of 100 microsieverts. One sievert equals 1,000,000 microsieverts.
