Papandreou’s slavish submission to Israeli interests includes his promise, to a delegation of U.S. zionist notables, to use his influence to pressure the new Egyptian military junta to continue to uphold the Mubarak agreements with Israel (European Jewish Press 2/11/11). These include the continued blockade of Gaza and support of Israel’s military assaults on Lebanon, Syria and Palestinians. In other words Papandreou is openly supportive of Egypt’s past collaboration with Israeli clandestine assassinations and kidnapping of Arab militants.

Papandreou demonstrates a greater interest in promoting Israel’s exports to the European market, than the country he ostensibly represents. He promised a delegation from the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations “to integrate Israel into the European market” (European Jewish Press 2/11/11) while he shrinks the Greeks economy by 10% between 2009-11 and doubles unemployment from 8% to 16%. Papandreou’s gross servility to Israel and the American Zionist power structure is manifested in his cordial reception and recent agreements with Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu and his foreign minister, the notorious Zionist-fascist Avigdor Lieberman – the same Lieberman who advocates wholesale expulsion of Palestinians from the West Bank. No Greek Prime Minister, since the Zionist state was founded, has exhibited such a bizarre display of active collaboration with Israel’s colonial claims in the Middle East. No European leader has so eagerly anticipated and implemented the demands of American Zionist organizations with such zeal."

Hooded youths on the fringes of a major anti-austerity protest in Athens have thrown rocks and firebombs in violent clashes with police at the Greek parliament.

At a rally of more than 20,000 in the Syntagma Square, police responded with teargas to push the protesters away from barricades erected to protect the parliament building where the government is seeking support for new cutbacks required to avoid a debt default.

Other demonstrators who had been part of the previously peaceful gathering also clashed with the violent groups of hooded youths, trying to eject them from their rally.

The protests were part of a 24-hour general strike against the cutbacks, which the country must pass to continue receiving funding from a €110bn (£95bn) international bailout that is preventing Greece from defaulting on its debts.

A large part of central Athens was closed to traffic and pedestrians as police mounted a huge security operation to allow politicians access to parliament by car. Around 5,000 officers, including hundreds of riot and motorcycle police, used parked buses and crowd barriers to prevent protesters from encircling the building.

"Resign, resign," the crowd chanted. The protesters included both young and old, and many brought their children, hoisting them onto their shoulders to shield them from the crush.

Two separate marches organised by trade unions joined the rally in Syntagma. Such demonstrations have often turned violent in the past – three clerks died when rioters torched a bank in Athens last May.

But the latest austerity drive has brought many people onto the streets for the first time.

"What can we do? We have to fight, for our children and for us," said Dimitra Nteli, a nurse at a state hospital who was at the protest with her daughter. "After 25 years of work I earn €1,100 a month. Now that will drop to €900. How can we live on that?"

Her 26-year-old daughter, Christina, said the situation in Greece had led her to leave for the UK to study conflict resolution. "I have no job here. There are no prospects," she said.

Police spokesman Athanassios Kokalakis said 10 protesters were briefly detained. About a hundred people booed and heckled as cars carrying Prime Minister George Papandreou and President Karolos Papoulias swept past for a meeting.

The general strike crippled public services across the country, leaving state hospitals running on emergency staff, disrupting port traffic and public transport, and forced radio and television news programs off the air during the morning. Journalists' unions called off their strike to cover developments in Athens.

Flights, however, were operating normally after the air traffic controllers' union called off their participation in the strike.

"They keep asking us to give more," said Ilias Iliopoulos, the general secretary of the civil servants' union ADEDY. "Now, again, they will cut our salaries and bonuses, from the little we have left."

The government needs to pass a new 2012-2015 austerity programme worth €28bn this month or face being cut off from continued funding from the EU and IMF.

To meet its commitments, Papandreou's Socialists abandoned a pledge not to impose new taxes and have drawn up a four-year privatisation programme worth €50bn, further fuelling protests against austerity by public utility employees and other affected groups.

Some of the MPs from the governing party have publicly criticised the cuts. One of them defected on Tuesday, reducing Papandreou's parliamentary majority to five in the 300-seat legislature. Another Socialist MP said he would vote against.

With its credit rating slashed, Greece is being kept afloat by the bailout, but will need extra support to cover funding gaps next year as high interest rates will prevent it from tapping the bond market, contrary to what the original bailout agreement had predicted.

On Monday night, Standard & Poor's cut Greece's rating from B to CCC, dropping it to the very bottom of the 131 states that have a sovereign debt-rating. That suggests Greece's creditors are less likely to get their money back than those of Pakistan, Ecuador or Jamaica.

It is an astonishing low for Greece. As recently as January 2009, the country still had a stellar A rating despite a hefty debt burden.

The Socialists' popularity has plummeted in recent weeks. A weekend opinion poll gave the main opposition conservatives a four-point lead, the first time the party has been ahead since 2009. The next general election is scheduled for 2013.

Greek Ruling Party Members Rebel: Another MP To Vote Against Bailout So "He Can Safely Walk The Streets"

"Earlier today, we reported about Kozani Alekos Athanasiadis, a member of parliament for the Greek ruling PASOK party, who in a radio interview said that he would vote against the medium-term program.

Next up is Giorgos Lianis who has just tendered his resignation as a member of Pasok's central committee, but is keeping his parliament seat and will continue to serve as an independent, leaving the ruling Pasok party with 155 MPs.

Athens News reports: "Commenting on the public anger over the austerity measures on the Alter television channel late last year, Lianis had declared his intention to leave politics in order to be able to safely "walk the streets."

As it is now, the population is afraid of the crooks in power . But the natural order of things is that the politicians should be afraid of the population , there is hope that things will change in that direction soon .

Unions representing around half of Greece's 4 million-strong workforce have called a 48 hour general strike for Wednesday and Thursday to protest against a sweeping package of austerity measures due to be passed in parliament this week. A wave of smaller strikes over recent days by groups ranging from rubbish collectors to tax officials, journalists and seamen has given a foretaste of this week's protest which will culminate in mass demonstrations in front of parliament, the scene of violent clashes in June.

November 1, 2011 – Athens, Greece (CNN) — Stock markets in the United States and Europe dropped dramatically Tuesday after Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou stunned the world by calling a national referendum on international aid for his country. The referendum could theoretically force Greece to crash out of the euro and send shock waves through the global financial system. Papandreou is seeking public backing for the bail-out deal, which took months to hammer out. The deal would see the country’s sky-high debts cut in half, but it comes with strings attached which have led to angry demonstrations in the streets of Greece. International lenders are demanding that Athens raise taxes, sell off state-owned companies, and slash government spending — which means firing tens of thousands of state workers. German and French markets were down more than 4% in afternoon trading Tuesday, and the Dow Jones plunged more than 250 points at the opening before recovering very slightly. French President Nicolas Sarkozy will discuss Europe’s debt crisis with German Chancellor Angela Merkel by phone Tuesday, his office announced. The announcement of the referendum rattled Papandreou’s hold on power Tuesday, as a lawmaker defected from his party, leaving him with a majority of only two in Parliament. Milena Apostolaki announced her resignation from the PASOK party, saying the call for a referendum was “a deeply divisive procedure.” The European debt crisis claimed its first American victim shortly before Papandreou announced the referendum on Monday, as MF Global filed for bankruptcy protection, leaving top Wall Street creditors holding more than $2 billion in debt. -CNN

Greece's financial crisis has made some families so desperate they are giving up the most precious thing of all - their children.

One morning a few weeks before Christmas a kindergarten teacher in Athens found a note about one of her four-year-old pupils.

"I will not be coming to pick up Anna today because I cannot afford to look after her," it read. "Please take good care of her. Sorry. Her mother."

In the last two months Father Antonios, a young Orthodox priest who runs a youth centre for the city's poor, has found four children on his doorstep - including a baby just days old.

Another charity was approached by a couple whose twin babies were in hospital being treated for malnutrition, because the mother herself was malnourished and unable to breastfeed.

Cases like this are shocking a country where family ties are strong, and failure to look after children is socially unacceptable - they feel to Greeks like stories from the Third World, rather than their own capital city.

One of the children cared for by Father Antonios is Natasha, a bright two-year-old brought to his centre by her mother a few weeks ago.

The woman said she was unemployed and homeless and needed help - but before staff could offer her support she had vanished, leaving her daughter behind.

"Over the last year we have hundreds of cases of parents who want to leave their children with us - they know us and trust us," Father Antonios says.

"They say they do not have any money or shelter or food for their kids, so they hope we might be able to provide them with what they need."

Requests of this kind were not unknown before the crisis - but Father Antonios has never until now come across children being simply abandoned.

Greek disability groups expressed anger Monday at a government decision to expand a list of state-recognized disability categories to include pedophiles, exhibitionists and kleptomaniacs.

The National Confederation of Disabled People called the action "incomprehensible," and said pedophiles are now awarded a higher government disability pay than some people who have received organ transplants.

The Labor Ministry said categories added to the expanded list — that also includes pyromaniacs, compulsive gamblers, fetishists and sadomasochists — were included for purposes of medical assessment and used as a gauge for allocating financial assistance.

But NCDP leader Yiannis Vardakastanis, who is blind, warned the new list could create new difficulties for disabled Greeks who are already facing benefit cuts due to the country's financial crisis.

"What's happened is incomprehensible. I think there is some big mistake. The ministry should have a different policy on disability," Vardakastanis told the Associated Press. "The list contains major changes to disability quotients, which could effectively remove many people from access to benefits."

The new list gives pyromaniacs and pedophiles disability pay up to 35 percent, compared to 80 percent for heart transplant recipients.

"It's really not serious to grant Peeping Toms a 20-30 percent disability rate, and 10 percent to diabetics, who have insulin shots four or five times a day," said Vardakastanis.

Greece has been fighting to avoid bankruptcy since 2009. Public spending on health and welfare programs has been sharply cut under austerity measures imposed as a condition for receiving emergency loans from the International Monetary Fund and other countries using the euro currency.

Independently run welfare programs that survived on state grants have been the hardest hit, leaving some disabled groups, including the deaf, facing sudden drops in their standard of care.

The government is also battling widespread abuse in the welfare system, forcing tens of thousands of disabled people to be reassessed.

My two cents worth of opinion is this .

1) Any deal to take over Greek property obtained under duress shall be declared null and void . Property would be taken back with force !
2) Declare bankrupt now and make a declaration that all debt and obligation are not to be paid . If the government does not do so , the population would be condemned to misery in perpetuity .
3) Follow the example of Iceland .
4) Tell the EU to take a bath , but the deal with Iran Stands .
5) Ban USA and EU banks from operating in Greece and actually threaten them with jail .........

(Reuters) - Greece's largest police union has threatened to issue arrest warrants for officials from the country's European Union and International Monetary Fund lenders for demanding deeply unpopular austerity measures.

In a letter obtained by Reuters on Friday, the Federation of Greek Police accused the officials of "...blackmail, covertly abolishing or eroding democracy and national sovereignty" and said one target of its warrants would be the IMF's top official for Greece, Poul Thomsen.

The threat is largely symbolic since legal experts say a judge must first authorize such warrants, but it shows the depth of anger against foreign lenders who have demanded drastic wage and pension cuts in exchange for funds to keep Greece afloat.
