President-elect Trump has narrowed in on Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) for secretary of state, Axios has confirmed with a Trump transition source.
Rubio is a foreign policy hawk who was on Trump's vice presidential short list.
Rubio has served in the Senate since 2011. He ran for president in 2016 before dropping out and endorsing Trump.
Rubio, who would be the first Latino secretary of state, opposes normalizing relations with Cuba and is a noted China hawk, Reuters notes
Rubio voted against $95 billion in Ukraine aid in April, and has called for Ukraine to negotiate an end to the war with Russia — even if that means Russia keeps some of the territory from the invasion.
He's endorsed Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) to replace Mitch McConnell as Senate GOP leader in the secret ballot election scheduled Wednesday.

Obviously, he is not the person most of us would have chosen.
However, most of the Western Hemisphere speaks Spanish. Rubio doesn't just speak Spanish, he understands Latino cultures. That gives him a strategic advantage in discussing foreign policy with leaders in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Venezuela, Brazil, and Argentina.
National Security officials are concerned about a potential war with China in the next 3 years. Rubio is a China hawk and is well suited to deal with the military and economic threats posed by the CCP.
Although he is sometimes called a warmonger, Rubio voted against aid to Ukraine this spring and has called for Zelensky to negotiate a peace treaty with Russia.
Rubio will be on a short leash. If he doesn't represent the interests of Trump and MAGA, he will be fired. Then he will neither be a senator nor Secretary of State.

Cabinet positions such as Secretary of State must be confirmed by the Senate. Some of the people Trump could pick who are Ultra MAGA may not make it through confirmation. Being a Senator in good standing, Rubio is a lock to be confirmed.
