Alberto Giubilini with Monash University in Melbourne and Francesca Minerva at the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics at the University of Melbourne write that in “circumstances occur[ing] after birth such that they would have justified abortion, what we call after-birth abortion should be permissible.”

The two are quick to note that they prefer the term “after-birth abortion“ as opposed to ”infanticide.” Why? Because it “[emphasizes] that the moral status of the individual killed is comparable with that of a fetus (on which ‘abortions’ in the traditional sense are performed) rather than to that of a child.” The authors also do not agree with the term euthanasia for this practice as the best interest of the person who would be killed is not necessarily the primary reason his or her life is being terminated. In other words, it may be in the parents’ best interest to terminate the life, not the newborns."

Homeopaths are facing a fight to defend their practice in Australia after the National Health and Medical Research Council flagged it might declare their work baseless and unethical.

A draft public statement seen by The Age concluded it was ''unethical for health practitioners to treat patients using homeopathy, for the reason that homeopathy (as a medicine or procedure) has been shown not to be efficacious''.

The confidential statement, which was not meant to be distributed, is based on a 2010 evaluation of homeopathy by the British House of Commons science and technology committee, which declared it was no more efficacious than a placebo.

Homeopathy is based on the principles of ''like-cures-like'' and ''ultra-dilutions''. The first says substances that can cause symptoms can be used in diluted form to treat the same symptom in an illness, and the second says the more dilute a substance is, the more potent it is.

While homeopathy continues to enjoy the support of Britain's royal family and is funded through the UK's National Health Service, the House of Commons report found its principles were ''theoretically weak'' and ''scientifically implausible''.

At the May 20-21 NATO summit in Chicago, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard pledged further support for the US-led occupation of Afghanistan. She stressed that the planned drawdown of more than 1,500 Australian troops in the southern Uruzgan province was in line with the Obama administration’s “transition”, which aims to withdraw combat forces in 2014 while maintaining a substantial military presence until 2024 and beyond.

Gillard functioned as little more than a mouthpiece for Washington during the NATO discussions. The Obama administration had aimed to use the summit to drum up financial support for the massive Afghan military-security apparatus developed under the US-NATO occupation. There will soon be 350,000 soldiers enrolled in the Afghan National Army, and the national police is expected to number another 160,000 by 2014, costing an estimated $4.1 billion annually.

Before leaving for Chicago, Gillard announced that Australia would contribute $100 million a year for three years. She declared that one of her key objectives in the NATO summit was to “see appropriate decisions made to sustain the Afghan National Security Forces beyond 2014”, adding that Australia “will be urging other nations to play their part in providing that support.”

I've been following what's been going on in Australia ever since Stan Deyo lived there and find the political climate very disturbing. It appears governments in various countries are more of a problem then the populace. How does the populace take back their countries? I don't have the answers yet can clearly see we have massive problems all because the few are so hungry for power and telling everyone else how to live we have turned into slaves and are no longer free people. It will be interesting to see how these next two years fare with the earth changes. Politics have been problematic almost since its inception. It's a conundrum no matter how one looks at it.

You have made some very good observations . The difference between Australia and the USA is that the population has been disarmed in OZ .
