    Tensions within the Republican Party reached a boiling point this week as Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) publicly challenged House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, accusing him of failing to deliver on campaign promises that allowed him to assume his leadership role in January.

    In a closed-door meeting with Republican House members on Thursday, McCarthy reportedly lost his cool amid growing murmurs of discontent and open threats to his leadership, according to The Hill.

    “If you want to file a motion to vacate, then file the f*cking motion,” McCarthy snapped, according to Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL).

    “I showed frustration in here because I am frustrated,” McCarthy admitted to reporters after the GOP meeting. He further lamented that the Defense Department appropriations bill couldn’t be placed on the floor, but failed to address the underlying issues causing the rift within his party.

    McCarthy’s meltdown prompted a response from Gaetz.

    “Instead of emotionally cursing, maybe the Speaker should just keep his word from January on balanced budgets, term limits, and single-subject spending bills,” Gaetz told The Hill.

    Gaetz doubled down on his attack on McCarthy in an X post, “I warned everybody in December of last year. Speaker McCarthy believes in NOTHING except money and power.     CHICAGO - Several libraries in the Chicago area, including Addison, Aurora, and Evanston, were targeted by bomb threats Tuesday.

    The threats, which were later determined to be false, came as lawmakers went head-to-head on Capitol Hill over book bans in schools and libraries.     Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias testified in the U.S. Senate during the hearing.

    Here at home, the threats led to evacuations and police responses across the city and suburbs. Some of the threats were sent to local libraries by email, while other branches received the startling messages through online chats.

    Inside Chicago's largest library, an employee alerted police to a disturbing message. Officials say an anonymous email stated that a bomb was located somewhere inside the Harold Washington Library. The Bomb Squad and K9s searched the premises, but nothing was found.

    A spokesperson for Chicago Public Libraries was not able to comment on the incident, as it is now a police investigation.

    "When these hoaxes come in like this, we call it a terrorist threat or causing a catastrophe," said Det. Rich Wistocki of BeSure Consulting. "You have kids who think it’s funny, they’re actually selling their services on Telegram, there are people paying them $50 for every shot."

    Police have not released information on who was behind Tuesday’s library bomb threats, but according to FOX 32 Chicago’s cybersecurity experts, most ‘swatting’ or prank calls and messages are routed through a VPN.

    "Virtual private networks, and when they’re using VPNs they think they can’t get caught but they can," said Wistocki.

    Retired Naperville police detective and president of BeSure Consulting said oftentimes threats are sent from within the U.S., but through a foreign VPN – and that can make it more difficult to trace.

    For example, Telegram – a cloud-based instant messaging service – which Wistocki said has been used in recent, local swatting incidents, is based out of the United Arab Emirates.

    "And we can’t trace that because they’re not cooperating with law enforcement investigations," said Wistocki.

    Wistocki said offenders could face between 10 and 30 years in prison, if convicted.

    On September 15, 2023, around 01:10 UTC, an explosive eruption at Shishaldin Volcano sent an ash-rich cloud soaring to an altitude of 12.8 km (42 000 feet), accompanied by volcanic lightning. The eruption followed a several-hour increase in seismicity. The Aviation Color Code and Volcano Alert Level were raised to RED/WARNING.

    The upper-level cloud detached from the vent around 02:30 UTC and was drifting towards the east. Beginning around 03:30 UTC, lightning resumed indicating continued ash emssions. At the time, the meteorological cloud deck over the volcano was over the volcano at about 6.8 km (22 500 feet) above sea level and ash emissions were not visible in satellite data. Explosions continued to be detected in infrasound data, at a lower level than during the most energetic phase of this event.

    Trace ash fall was reported in the community of False Pass between 02:00 to 04:30 UTC. The National Weather Service has issued a SIGMET for the drifting ash cloud, and a Special Weather Statement has been issued for trace ash on False Pass.

    Seismicity started decreasing rapidly around 02:30 UTC, but it remained elevated until 05:00 UTC. During this period of waning seismicity, volcanic lightning continued to be detected, indicating continued ash production. The last detection of volcanic lighting was at 04:48 UTC and seismicity has returned to pre-eruptive levels, indicating that significant ash emissions have ended. Thus, the Aviation Color Code and Volcano Alert Level were lowered to ORANGE/WATCH.

    The death toll from the wildfires that devastated Maui last month has dropped from 115 to 97 after DNA tests, Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said Friday.

    "The number dropped a little bit because the Department of Defense and all of their physical anthropologists were able to help us discern better who was in cars or houses," Green said in a video posted to Twitter. "So thank God, fewer people have passed away."

    So far, 74 of the 97 dead have been officially identified, according to Hawaii News Now.

    Green said 31 reports of missing persons are still open and not all of the remains found have been identified. That number is down from 66 described as missing at the end of last week.

With American consumers being overwhelmed by the cost of basic staples, people have considerably less money to visit their favorite food joints this year, and this is severely hurting the bottom line of famous chains like Olive Garden, Waffle House, and even the NFL's official pizza place, Little Caesars.

    Despite being one of the most well-known restaurants in America, Olive Garden is facing its fair share of struggles this year. Parent company Darden Restaurants informed investors and analysts that they will have to lower their expectations as inflation continues to pressure its main customer base. CNBC reported that the company's profits fell nearly $100 million below expectations, and that same-store sales dropped 8% below target. Raj Vennam, the Chief Financial Officer of Darden, explained that because Olive Garden was both an eat-in location and had an that was more at risk due to the rising cost of everyday necessities, sales numbers weren't as strong as the company predicted they would be. Catering to middle and upper-middle-class Americans, the brand has been particularly susceptible to disruptions as these groups coped with higher inflation and slow wage growth in recent years. As it turns out, consumers today are far less willing to spend $20 for an entree when fast-casual brands like Chipotle are cheaper, and that's a major issue for Olive Garden. In response, the casual dining chain trimmed its menu, pivoted to takeout, and is trying to cut costs. But industry experts are questioning whether those measures will be enough to save the company from the overall decline in traffic and the reduction of its main clientele.

    Meanwhile, management is struggling to bring Waffle House back on its feet. CEO Walter Ehmer revealed that sales volumes dropped dramatically, and an acute labor shortage is still causing disruptions in its operations. The company's servers only earn $2.92 an hour and rely mainly on tips to have a livable wage, which led thousands of workers to quit in the past couple of years, and left recruiters scrambling to find new personnel to fill in vacant positions. Still, the chain is now charging a 20% fee on all 'To-Go orders' claiming that 10% is paid to servers and 10% is a service fee. However, customers don't seem convinced that's the real reason why prices are going up at Waffle House. On social media, many say the company is 'price gouging' its customers while failing to provide financial support to its workers. Under public scrutiny, Waffle House is losing popularity at a time when it desperately needs to boost sales and profits to survive the ongoing downturn.

    With lower sales volumes, and more expensive costs, these and many other major brands are losing millions of dollars in profits and getting closer to bankruptcy court. These are just a few businesses being affected by the current economic downturn. Many people in the media deny that we're in a recession, but the fact that even some of the most-established restaurant chains in the market are fighting to stay afloat tells us otherwise. A flood of bankruptcies is coming, and many beloved chains will go down next.

    John Greenewald's recent article on David Grusch takes an unbalanced approach to a FOIA response about Grusch's claims.
