Water Cannons Fired at Water Protectors in Freezing Temperatures Injure Hundreds

    November 21, 2016

Cannon Ball, ND-- Hundreds of water protectors were injured at the Standing Rock encampments when law enforcement blasted them with water cannons in freezing temperatures Sunday evening.   The attacks came as water protectors used a semi-truck to remove burnt military vehicles that police had chained to concrete barriers weeks ago, blocking traffic on Highway 1806.  Water protectors’ efforts to clear the road and improve access to the camp for emergency services were met with tear gas, an LRAD (Long Range Acoustic Device), stinger grenades, rubber bullets, and indiscriminate use of a water cannon with an air temperature of 26 degrees Fahrenheit. Some flares shot by law enforcement started grass fires which were ignored by the water cannons and had to be extinguished by water protectors. Law enforcement also shot down three media drones and targeted journalists with less lethal rounds.

National Lawyers Guild legal observers on the frontlines have confirmed that multiple people were unconscious and bleeding after being shot in the head with rubber bullets.  One elder went into cardiac arrest at the frontlines but medics administered CPR and were able to resuscitate him.  The camp’s medical staff and facilities are overwhelmed and the local community of Cannonball has opened their school gymnasium for emergency relief.

Our friend Paola is there to support them. Before she left she told us three things she did not want to happen to her. She didn't want to be shot by rubber bullets. She didn't want to be arrested and she didn't want to go to jail. I don't think she would have even considered being hosed down by a water cannon.

Water Protector in Critical Condition After DAPL Police Grenade Blew Apart Her Arm
    Claire Bernish November 21, 2016

Sunday night’s no-holds-barred offensive by police from multiple agencies against unarmed water protectors opposed to the Dakota Access Pipeline on Highway 1806’s Backwater Bridge — in which at least 167 suffered injuries — sent two elders into cardiac arrest, left a 13-year-old girl injured by a rubber bullet to the head, and now, one woman will almost certainly lose her arm.

Sophia Walinsky stood among the crowd of around 400 water protectors as the police launched an all-out assault, firing ‘nonlethal’ projectiles, tear gas, mace, LRAD sound cannons, and concussion grenades — one of which reportedly exploded on her left arm, tearing through flesh and exposing bone, and leaving her facing possible amputation.

She is reportedly being cared for in a hospital in Minnesota, and at the time this article was published, the fate of her arm was still unknown.

Standing Rock: Water Cannons Fired at Water Protectors in Freezing Temperatures Injure Hundreds Sophia-1

No statement or press release has been issued by the Morton County Sheriff’s Office or any other law enforcement agency present that night, nor has any word addressing Walinsky’s grisly wound come from the office of North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple.

Over-militarized police officers began the offensive Sunday evening after water protectors attempted to clear burned-out military vehicles from the roadway that had been blocked since a clash on October 27. Standing Rock Sioux water protectors have been concerned the blockade was obstructing access by emergency services to the reservation and area residences.

As they proceeded to bulldoze the blockade, police began firing rubber bullets and other projectiles — and the situation quickly escalated from there.

Morton County Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier told mainstream media outlets the ‘protesters’ had acted violently and set fires near and on the bridge, justifying the need to bring in water cannons — but witnesses and live-streamed video decisively dispute this claim.

In fact, fires were sparked by law enforcement’s launching of tear gas canisters and concussion grenades at the activists, and the use of water cannons — though under the guise of dousing the flames — were in actuality deployed as a means of crowd control, despite temperatures well below freezing.

Completely blocked from escape by the violent police attack on one side, the 400 water protectors were forced to endure the hours-long offensive rather than trampling over each other trying to escape.

It was sometime during this chaos Walinsky suffered the horrific trauma, and scores of water protectors were left with serious wounds, including many who experienced hypothermia from the life-endangering police use of water cannons.

Ironically, just two days prior to giving the go ahead for water to be used as crowd control, the Morton County Sheriff issued a statement of concern pipeline opponents and water protectors camped near the Missouri River could suffer — hypothermia.

U.S. Army Corps says Standing Rock camp to be closed by Dec. 5

Letter says demonstrators to be moved south to 'free speech zone'

By Tim Fontaine, CBC News Posted: Nov 25, 2016 8:18 PM ET

Oceti Sakowin, the largest camp near Standing Rock, N.D., has been ordered closed by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has told the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe that the main camp used by people opposed to the Dakota Access pipeline will be closed by Dec. 5.

The camp is on land located just north of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe reservation, where Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners has been trying to complete the contentious Dakota Access pipeline. If finished, the $3.8-billion US pipeline will carry crude oil south to Illinois from northern North Dakota.

According to a letter sent to tribe dated Nov. 25, the Corps of Engineers will be "closing the portion of the Corps-managed federal property north of the Cannonball River to all public use and access effective Dec. 5, 2016."

The letter states that "this decision is necessary to protect the general public from the violent confrontation between protesters and law enforcement officials that have occurred in this area, and to prevent death, illness, or serious injury to inhabitants of encampments due to the harsh North Dakota winter conditions."

Anyone on the land after Dec. 5 would be considered to be illegally trespassing, the Corps said.

"Our tribe is deeply disappointed in this decision by the United States, but our resolve to protect our water is stronger than ever," said tribal chair Dave Archambault in a statement, who added that it was an unfortunate decision made a day after Thanksgiving in the U.S.

"Although the news is saddening, it is not at all surprising given the last 500 years of the mistreatment of our people," Archambault added.

The Corps said that people opposed to the pipeline could freely demonstrate in a "free speech zone," which would be established south of the existing camp.

The tribal chair didn't say anything about what people in the camp should do — instead urging the public to contact outgoing U.S. President Barack Obama and ask that he rescind federal permits needed to complete the pipeline, which requires the company to drill underneath Lake Oahe on the Missouri River. The river passes directly through the reservation and the tribe fears any break could contaminate the water.

More than 500 people have been arrested in demonstrations since the summer and one woman nearly lost an arm when she was injured during a clash with police on Nov. 20.

A delegation of doctors trained at the Latin American School of Medicine in Cuba announced they will head to Standing Rock to “serve in solidarity.”

In a late Thursday Facebook post, a group of U.S.-based medical professionals trained at Cuba’s famous Latin American School of Medicine, or ELAM, announced they will head to Standing Rock “to humbly serve in solidarity with the Sacred Water Protectors on the front lines of the current human rights and ecological crisis occurring right now in North Dakota.”

Dr. Revery P. Barnes, a graduate of ELAM, said in a post on Facebook, “We answer the call to serve in alignment with the mission and core principles of our alma mater and dedication to our commitment to serve underserved communities in our HOME country.” The delegation will work in collaboration with the Standing Rock Medic and Healer Council.

“While Cuba instilled in us an unwavering commitment to internationalism, with the acceptance of a full scholarship to medical school at ELAM, we made the moral commitment to respond to the needs of our most vulnerable communities here at home in the U.S.,” the statement continued.

    .
    .

I don't see how rerouting the pipeline is considered a victory.  Big whoopee if you ask me.

How is 'Indian land' more sacred than any other land?

Now then, if they stopped the pipeline all together, that would be a victory.

In this day and age, they've still got practically everyone believing we need this kind of filthy power source that keeps us at the mercy of power hungry, genocidal maniacs?  What does it take to finally wake up?

We still think protesting actually does any good?  Protesting only serves the system.  Protesting means we still 'know our place'.  We are deathly afraid to really stand up against 'authority' and say, "Stop!  No more!"  The majority of us are just a bunch of cowards and only know how to live in fear.  We deserve what we get.

For those who may have missed these, I think they're relevant to the topic at hand:

Breaking: Trump Signs Executive Order Reviving Keystone XL Pipeline

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXZqEP-JsYg

Standing Rock Sioux pledge to fight executive order: 'We can't back down now'

Donald Trump’s revival of the Dakota Access pipeline is a stunning twist of fate, but the tribe and its supporters say now is the time to show strength

The Standing Rock Sioux tribe and its supporters are vowing to resist Donald Trump’s executive order to allow construction of the Dakota Access pipeline with legal action, civil disobedience and a return to the “water protector” encampments.

“President Trump is legally required to honor our treaty rights and provide a fair and reasonable pipeline process,” said Standing Rock Sioux tribal chairman Dave Archambault, who called Trump’s action “politically motivated”.

Resurrection of Keystone and DAPL cements America's climate antagonism

“Creating a second Flint does not make America great again,” he added.

The executive order represents a major – if not wholly unexpected – reversal of fate for the $3.8bn project, which was slated to cross the Missouri River just upstream of the Standing Rock Sioux reservation. The tribe feared the pipeline would contaminate their drinking water and destroy sacred sites.

It's far more then politically motivated. As I recall they are placing that pipeline along side an existing one on private land. The goal is to become energy self-sufficient and not use oil (costing the US billions) from the mid-east. The US's debt is staggering and needs to become smarter when it comes to how to use it's own natural resources. In addition, this project will help create jobs at multiple levels which is one of the primary goals of the President - putting Americans back to work.

I found the following article from Graham Hancock quite interesting. I think it's well worth reading to the end to get a full picture and have a broader understanding of what the Natives and non natives that support them are standing for.

    Standing Rock: Water Is Life

    Standing Rock: Water Is Life
Standing Up To Those Who Always Take The Largest Portion

Graham Hancock looks into the historical background to the current pipeline dispute in North Dakota and learns that what it’s really all about is how we, as the human family, wish to live in the twenty-first century. Two very different philosophies and lifeways are at issue, one deeply connected to spirit, to the sacred beauty of Mother Earth and to the vast universe that sustains us, the other utterly disconnected, regarding the material realm as nothing more than an economic resource, and holding nothing sacred except money and profit. The stakes could not be higher and the choices we make now will have effects – for good or ill – that that reach far into the future…

For a long while I’d been vaguely aware that there’s something wrong with the collective noun “Sioux” for the confederation of Native North American peoples speaking the Dakota, Lakota and Nakota languages. Then, on 2 December 2016, I meet Cody Two Bears, District Representative for the Cannonball Community on the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council, and finally get the picture clear. “Sioux is just a word that people know us by,” Cody tells me, ‘so I’m not against it. Even if somebody calls me a word that I don’t particularly accept or interpret very well, I just tell them, ‘If that’s how you know us that’s fine’.”

Nonetheless the noun “Sioux” does have a history and does carry baggage. It’s thought to be derived from a pejorative term meaning ‘Little Serpents’ in the language of another Native American people, the Ojibwe, and to have been bastardized into French, with the ‘x’ plural marker, as Nadouessioux. It first appeared in that form in 1640 in the writings of the French-Canadian explorer Jean Nicolet. Later, around 1760, it was abbreviated to Sioux and adopted into the English language. “So,” concedes Cody, “the Sioux name in the history books was given to us by the Wasi’chu, the white people.”

We’ve entered another etymological rabbit hole that runs deep, since it turns out that the Lakota word Wasi’chu does not translate literally as “white people”. What it actually means is “he who takes the fat”, or “he who takes the larger portion” – in other words, a greedy person. “We’ve always called white people that,” Cody explains, “because we see the greed in them a lot of times – the one who takes the larger portion. We see that spirit about them.”

This spirit of greed, and of taking the larger portion – by force or deception or both – is an unmissable presence looming over the sad history of Native American lands usurped by successive governments of the United States of America. The ancient and traditional keepers of the land have again and again found themselves in conflict with industries and agribusinesses hungry for profits and backed by the power and authority of the US government. The most recent battle in this struggle of centuries was joined in 2016 in North Dakota at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, and at the protest camp named Oceti Sakowin situated just beyond the reservation’s present northern boundary. There, from July 2016 and onwards into the winter, a rainbow coalition of Sioux, other Native American tribes, and non-Native American peoples gathered to stop the laying of an oil pipeline under Lake Oahe on the Missouri River half a mile north of Standing Rock in a location that not only transgressed traditionally sacred lands, but also threatened the Reservation’s water supply in the event of a spill.

Such spills happen surprisingly often with oil pipelines, and when they do they can cause immense damage. Indeed on 5 December 2016, more than 175,000 gallons of crude oil leaked from the Bell Fourche Pipeline into Ash Coulee Creek in western North Dakota.i That was just 150 miles north of Oceti Sakowin, proving the point of the protestors that no pipelines are safe or can be guaranteed foolproof against spills.

You made good points Mercuriel and Carol. However the above matters I feel need to be taken into account too .

Here is what is going on behind the smoke screen. Warren Buffet is likely behind the paid protesters as he wanted to see the oil shipped by rail after he purchased all of those railroads. He would have made billions. In addition regarding resuming construction of the Keystone SL pipeline - the problem is that people don't understand that the oil pipes built in the sixties are far more apt to be a problem then new pipes built in 2017. In addition, it is far more hazardous to transport oil over land by truck or rail then underground in a pipe. The President wants to make the US oil independent where the US uses it's own oil and not purchase it from elsewhere.

Besides, the US has far more oil. Currently 3 oil fields on US soil and offshore are larger that all the middle east oil fields combined the US gov confiscated them and will not allow the oil to be sold in the american market what they do pump is sold overseas. Hopefully this will change with our new President where oil is sold within the US making it cheaper for US citizens to purchase. In fact, it's enough oil to easily pay off the 20 trillion in National Debt.

It's still about our own interests, money (profit/control over people, corruption), jobs (jobs=slaves)... We seem to have a long way to go.

I do understand the points Carol makes as I do understand the Natives concerns.
I hope President Trump will be intelligent enough to build a bridge to them that will lead to fair agreements.

Regarding Free energy Pris I think Mike Adams makes some good points in the following article:
    http://www.naturalnews.com/026116_energy_free_population.html

We have to pick up the broken pieces of the mess we have let the world fall into , building as many walls as necessary to protect ourselves from those that mean harm while at the same time building strong bridges between one another that we may remember that we live on this Earth alltogether. I believe it's our duty to preserve life on our planet by constantly finding ways to connect with one another with greater conscience. Individually and collectively we can make humanity great again and I am sure the doors will open then for free energy to set in in resonance with the level of consciousness and spiritual freedom we will have attained by doing so.

I too believe that Trump will seek to make Bridges - Not Burn them and I do recall on - IIRC - Day 2 | That He said that He was going to revive the Pipeline Agreements but that He would seek to ensure that It was to the benefit of all Involved - Including the Native Bands involved as well as the Enviroment.

Please understand that in no way am I being an apologist for the Trump Administration - Far from It but rather that this Man has done more in the small amount of time Hes been there - Than anyone else I can recall in living Memory.

That said - We must hold Him and His Administration up to the standards He and His Administration have said They will observe. Service to the People of the United States and that Includes It's Indigenous Peoples.

We as a Population must support and engage this President. We must tell Him what We seek and how We seek It.

He has Hammered It out there - The Power is back in the People's Hands and now We must take positive steps to Invoke It.
