I'm Struck by This Photo

I know things are bad.

But I have not seen a photo quite like this before - not in a context like this.

That guy is carrying a machine gun.

That is a Federal U.S. Capitol Hill Policeman, and they have been openly carrying these kinds weapons since the post 911 days...Note this fire power display is often beefed up when Congress is in session or when something important is taking place on the Hill. And also note ~ this all watching security force is everywhere now (just out of sight) in the D.C. Federal zone involving a multitude of security agencies.

Wow.

I worked in DC from 2002 - 2006 and I never saw this.

I used to love taking a walk to the Mall every day and seeing the Capitol and the Washington Monument. I love the Capitol building. I wish I loved what goes on there.
