Oil giant Shell fights to stop leak off Scottish coast
    13.08.2011

A light sheen was seen on the water near the drilling platform
The oil firm Shell has been battling to stop the flow of oil leaking from a platform in the North Sea, off the coast of Scotland. The company is being urged to take swift action as the size of the spill is investigated.

The oil giant Shell was fighting an oil leak from an undersea pipeline off the Scottish coast on Saturday.

A clean-up vessel and spotter plane were sent into the affected area of the North Sea, near the company's Gannet Alpha platform, to assess how much oil was being released.

The leak was discovered on Wednesday after oil was seen on the water's surface 180 kilometers (112 miles) east of Aberdeen, Scotland.

Shell finds second oil leak in North Sea
The secondary leak is proving a challenge, while the main leak is 'pretty much dead', according to the energy company

A second oil leak has been discovered from an offshore platform in the North Sea.

An estimated 216 tonnes (1,300 barrels) has already spilled into the sea after the initial spill, which began at the Gannet Alpha platform 112 miles east of Aberdeen last Wednesday.

Glen Cayley, technical director of platform operator Shell's exploration and production activities in Europe, said the main leak was "pretty much dead" but a small secondary leak was proving a challenge.

Around two barrels a day are leaking into the sea, compared with hundreds of barrels a day at the start of the incident, Shell said.

Cayley said: "The leak that we've stemmed was in the flow line so job number one was to close in the wells and isolate the reservoir, which of course is the large volume from the leak.

"We're confident that it's under control. The residual small leak is in an awkward position to get to. This is complex sub-sea infrastructure, and really getting into it among quite dense marine growth is proving a challenge.

"The primary leak in the flow line is pretty much dead.

"There is a small secondary leak created by that which is the small flow of two barrels a day which is proving a little difficult to get to and isolate."

He said it is not known how the leak initially happened, and it was first spotted by a helicopter flying overhead.

At its peak the sheen on the surface extended 18 miles but Shell said this has now diminished.

Cayley said there was strong evidence that sea conditions were naturally dispersing the oil.

The estimated spill outstrips annual spill totals for the past decade, according to figures from the Department of Energy and Climate Change (Decc).

The total amount of oil discharged into the North Sea in 2009 was 50.93 tonnes.

Massive Siberian oil spill leaves thousands without water
    26 April, 2012

A giant oil slick is flowing along Russia's Angara river, in southeastern Siberia. Authorities have declared the situation an emergency, with some 80,000 people stranded without water.
Reports say the slick is about ten kilometers long. Emergency services are trying to stop the oil from making its way any further, but have not succeeded so far.
The concentration of oil in the water still exceeded the norm by several times on Thursday.
About two tons of diesel oil spilled into the river on Wednesday as a result of an accident caused by illegal siphoning, officials say.
    Cashing in on suffering
The incident disrupted the local water intake, which supplies water to three towns, leaving about 80,000 people without water.
Local authorities in the affected towns had to close schools and kindergartens in the area, though hospitals are working as usual.
The centralized water supply can be restored only after probes show that the oil concentration in the water is lower than the maximum permissible concentration.
Meanwhile, there are reports of merchants trying to cash in on the catastrophe by doubling and tripling prices for bottled water.
Authorities urged them not to turn a profit on the ecological disaster, and said they would closely monitor the situation to eliminate such cases.
Forty tons of free bottled water have been delivered in the affected are as emergency workers try to restore the intake's ability to operate.
