A 37-year-old Czech fireman is remarkably able to live “like a healthy man,” thanks to a procedure which removed his heart and replaced it with mechanical months six month ago.

Jakub Halik does not have a pulse anymore, as he became the second man to undergo this surgery, the first being a Texas man, who died a month after the surgery last year.

Halik is confined to a wheelchair and still lives in the hospital, but he couldn’t be more grateful to be alive.

Halik had an aggressive tumor growing in his heart, and therefore couldn’t undergo a standard transplant, as the drugs required cannot be taken by cancer patients.

So, on April 3 this year his heart was removed in an eight-hour operation led by Czech cardiologist Jan Pirk.

In its place, surgeons inserted two modified Heartmate 2 pumps, manufactured by US company Thoratec Corp.

See anything wrong with this picture? First of all they state:

A 37-year-old Czech fireman is remarkably able to live “like a healthy man,” thanks to a procedure ...

How is he supposed to live like a healthy man when he has cancer that would not allow a regular heart transplant?

My feeling is he's a guinea pig. Considering much of the research I've been doing lately leans this way in the long run...
