Raising the awareness about the human impact on the lives of animals - Page 12 Empty Why don't dolphins fight back?

    http://www.theecologist.org/blogs_and_comments/commentators/other_comments/2049801/why_dont_dolphins_fight_back.html

Laura Bridgeman takes a look at the scientific evidence that may explain why dolphins have such a benevolent nature when it comes to interactions with humans........

Many people are now familiar with the scene that is playing out in the photo to the right. It was taken in Taiji, Japan, a place where hunting and killing dolphins is commonplace. However, this particular photo captures a moment in time that bears closer scrutiny. It presents us with compelling questions about dolphin emotional intelligence and their relationships with humans, and it challenges us to rethink the way we treat these beings of the sea.

Take a closer look at the photo. It captures the last few moments of these dolphin's lives, as the divers you can see in the water guide them to their deaths. These dolphins are going - unwillingly, yet relatively peacefully - beneath a tarpaulin-covered area where they will be restrained by their tails beside one another.

Raising the awareness about the human impact on the lives of animals - Page 12 362571

A metal spike will then be driven slowly into their heads. To watch this process, click here (warning: graphic content is distressing). Their family and friends are thrashing about in the water all around them, utterly exhausted and likely terrified after the hours-long chase that brought them into the fishermen's nets. If you look closely at the photo, you can see that some of the dolphins are already bleeding, the result of hurling themselves upon the rocks in an attempt to escape the fishermen and the horrors that are occurring beneath the tarpaulin.

The dolphins in this photo have been backed into a corner, with fishermen and certain death on one side, and the net separating them from freedom on the other. What species of wild animal do we know of - or even who among our own - would not lash out when backed into such a corner?

Yet, like the thousands of dolphins before them, these dolphins will not attack. And not for lack of ability - weighing in at around 800 pounds, armed with sharp teeth and powerful tails, these top predators could do some serious damage to those humans in the water. But they refrain, time and again. This undeserved benevolence towards humans is baffling, at best. However, scientific investigations of the dolphin brain appear to offer some insight to this complaisant behavior.

Our brains share many structural similarities with dolphins. For example, we both have a limbic system, which is responsible for handling emotional information. One difference between us, however, is that the dolphins' limbic system is much larger than ours and, says scientist Denise Herzig, it "may be stretched out over more of the brain," indicating that "the dolphin brain may have more of a ‘global connection' to [emotional] information". This could mean that dolphins are more emotional than humans, and that emotions could figure more prominently throughout their thought processes.

While it might be tempting to think that increased emotions would lead to greater aggression when being backed into a corner, another compelling feature of the dolphin brain appears to account for this notion. Sterling Bunnell, in The Evolution of Cetacean Intelligence points out that the cerebral cortex, responsible for logical thought and reasoning in both humans and dolphins alike, is controlled by the emotional activity of the limbic system. This process is facilitated by what are called ‘neocortical association neurons'.

Bunnell observed that, in human studies, the ratio of these neurons to limbic-system brain stem neurons "is necessary for such qualities as ...emotional self-control" and that a decreased ratio is associated with "impulsiveness, emotional instability, irritability, loss of humor". Bunnell points out that dolphins possess a higher neocortical-limbic ratio than the average human, suggesting that their control over their own emotions is greater than what we experience.

It could be that dolphins, while being more emotional, are more emotionally stable than we are, and are therefore able to better control themselves in stressful situations. This could explain their apparent control over the impulse to lash out at the humans who are so callously ending their lives.

This could also explain why dolphins are so tractable in captivity. Live dolphins are captured in Taiji and are sold to aquariums around the world. Despite being severely traumatized, Bunnell points out that, "captive dolphins... have often shown humor, empathy, and self-control that few of us could match under comparable circumstances". Indeed. These beings are separated from their families, placed into sterile tanks that are utterly unlike any environment they're exposed to in the wild, and are forced to perform tricks through food deprivation - if they don't perform, they don't eat. Yet they treat nearly every one of their customers with what appears to be kindness and understanding. Something to keep in mind the next time you accept a ‘kiss' from a captive dolphin.

At this time, we have no way of knowing with certainty that these are the reasons for the dolphin's perceived benevolence. Some studies suggest that the passive behaviors could result from the incredible stress of the capture and killing process, effectively sending the dolphins into a coma-like state. However, what we do know is that the behavior of dolphins is different than that of other species when placed under extreme duress.

Despite what little we know of a dolphin's experience of the world, it is difficult to deny that they are highly intelligent and that they are likely capable of significant emotional suffering. We are left with an unsettling yet important question: is it morally justifiable to continue to use and abuse dolphins in the ways we do, whether killing them for food or capturing them to perform for our amusement?

Take another look at the photo, and then process the information contained in this article with your cerebral cortex. Then allow it to percolate through your limbic system. The answer should come to you.

Pigs Forced To Fight To Death In China These shocking images show the brutal moment two pigs fight to the death in front of cheering spectators at a crowded stadium. The two desperate animals can be seen circling each other before they are forced into battle by being prodded and poked with long sticks by their trainers. As the two male beasts clash, they headbutt each other and attempt to bring their rival down by biting their neck

For the fifth straight day the killers of Taiji, Japan inflicted further pain and suffering on 42 of the 250 Bottlenose dolphins that were herded into the cove. After the killers arrived at daybreak they pushed the first Bottlenose dolphin pod to the killing shore with the same inhumane muscle and force typical in Taiji. Unfortunately, however, the pod that fought so hard in the previous days was unable fight from lack of food, exhaustion, and injuries sustained from killers and motors over the last five days. Once on the shore 40 dolphins were each sentenced to a slow, painful, and conscious death as a metal rod was rammed into their spinal cord. The killers were not the only ones to witness each dolphin suffer on the shore, 1 Bottlenose watched its family murdered in front of her before she was transported to a tiny captive prison in the harbor. Death did not end on the killing shore this morning. One dolphin in the second remaining pod was seen struggling in the nets and ignored by the killers before he/she finally drowned. Killers tried to hide the death of this dolphin with tarps, but his/her struggle was not in vain as Cove Guardians were there for the world to see. Hungry from killing up an appetite, the dolphin murderers took a break for lunch before the remaining 130-140 starved and injured Bottlenose dolphins were driven back out to sea in the same deafening manner as the drive in. Many babies and juveniles were seen in the remaining pod. Too small to count for quota and deemed unsuitable for captivity. Many of these dolphins who were driven out will not survive and will soon be found washed ashore in the coming days. A total of 93 Bottlenose dolphins were taken from the ocean in the past 5 days by the barbaric killers and trainers of Taiji, Japan. The killers claim the barbaric drive, starvation, beating, and murdering of dolphins is there culture. However, they continue to try and hide their actions and make millions of dollars off of the captive industry that is used for funding the slaughter. Total 52 captives 41 deaths 130-140 driven back out to sea Our Live Stream can be viewed at http://livestream.seashepherd.org

Thank you this thread is an excellent showcase of how insane the human race is towards animals and it is truly disturbing the level of violence shown. It was also said that the dolphins are the grid keepers of the earth ley lines and could be from the Sirian star system! So are the whales and they are washing up on the beaches of the world dead with stomachs full of plastics and toxins. Who knows what effects the radiation from nukeashemia will have upon this world...its really not a great outlook for peace and love when this kind of murder is going on. With all the wars against other nations and relegions as well as the police state who have killed many people while protecting and serving the agenda of the elite who continue to run this planet into the ground! Good luck JT!

He struggles to his feet, separated from his mother just after birth - all he wants is the warmth, milk, and nutrition he should be getting from her - She stands inches from her baby, hoping that the bars will open and she can ease his pain, nourish, protect and love her newborn - We are such a cruel, selfish, greed filled species- She will never get that chance - We have alternatives, please use them: Almond Milk, Rice Milk, Cashew Milk, Hemp Milk, Oatmeal Milk, Soy Milk

This little fox baby was found by animal rescuers between the trash of a fur farm in Germany. It was alive and it was hard to believe that this baby obviously survived the skinning. The rescuers took it to the veterinary but the they lost their fight. The fox baby was too injured and died.

This has to be stopped. Don't wear fur. Even the smallest piece of fur. Fur is not a byproduct of the food industry. Animals were and are killed just for this purpose. That humans look good. (That just what they think...)

[color:55e9=#339999]Cruel traditions based on superstition and culture, at the expense of innocent and suffering animals, can no longer be tolerated.
For the chinese Dong Festival, the villages of the Guangxi Zhuang region practice hoisting bulls up trees and leaving them there until they die. These animals suffer a very slow, agonizing, and terror-filled death while villagers and tourists (including children) snap photos and laugh it up.
The head of the bull is decorated in flowers in a mocking manner as the bull slowly starves to death

Last Saturday, overloaded cattle truck transporting live animals to slaughter, capsized in the La Cochinera de Morón - Coro region, Venezuela. After the accident, locals came out armed with knives and machetes, and started brutally murdering animals that were still alive. While butchering, they made fun of the suffering. They also dismembered animals that already had died." http://www.lapatilla.com/site/2014/02/23/gandola-con-reses-volco-en-moron-y-habitantes-descuartizaron-a-los-animales-fotos/

    Why Are These Rabbits Screaming?

Because their fur is being ripped out while they're conscious and struggling.

Raising the awareness about the human impact on the lives of animals - Page 12 Angora3

Why? To be used in angora sweaters and accessories.

Undercover footage shot by PETA Asia found workers who were violently ripping the fur from the rabbits' sensitive skin as they screamed at the top of their lungs in pain.

After this terrifying and barbaric ordeal, which the rabbits endure every three months, many of them appeared to go into severe shock. After two to five years, those who have survived are hung upside down, their throats are slit, and their carcasses are sold.

Rabbits who have their fur cut or sheared also suffer: During the cutting process, their front and back legs are tightly tethered―a terrifying experience for any prey animal―and the sharp cutting tools inevitably wound them as they struggle desperately to escape.

Ninety percent of angora wool comes from China, where there are no penalties for the abuse of animals on farms and no standards to regulate the treatment of the animals. When you buy a sweater, hat, or other product that contains angora, the angora wool most likely originated in China, even if the finished product was assembled elsewhere.

    How You Can Help Rabbits

Check the label of every sweater, pair of gloves, winter hat, and accessory that you purchase, and if it says "angora" – put it back on the shelf! Pledge below never to wear angora wool.

There are numerous sacrificial rituals in Nepal which go unreported. These include the killing of piglets during Dashain for example: "The youngsters run around carrying the squeaking pig under their jackets and passing it quickly from one to the other. The animal is released after two hours after which a dancer grabs it. He tears the heart of the live baby pig out after which it is eaten raw. As the dancers are forbidden to use knives or instruments the lead dancer tears the skin under the piglet’s forelegs with his fingernails, insert his hand and pulls out the heart. The dancers drink blood from the piglet’s open chest. This is the culture of Newar community. Newars have lots of other ritual which are very cruel. One clear example is: Khokana Festival "

Raising the awareness about the human impact on the lives of animals - Page 12 Empty Zoo euthanizes healthy bear cub to teach children ‘nature can be cruel’

Post  burgundia Wed Jul 02, 2014 3:38 pm

A zoo in Switzerland is the latest to be embroiled in controversy, after it not only killed a healthy bear cub but will now stuff and display it to teach children that “nature can be cruel.”

Details of the fate of the baby brown bear, known only as Cub 4, come on the heels of outrage over the killing by Denmark’s Copenhagen Zoo of a young male giraffe named Marius and four lions.

The Dahlholzli Zoo in the Swiss city of Bern said it decided to put down the bear cub after its father, named Misha, mauled its sibling to death and threatened to do the same to Cub 4.

According to a media release, the zoo initially decided not to interfere with the bears’ “natural” behavior.

But when it was observed that the mother, Masha, had begun neglecting Cub 4 and that the father was roughing it up too, zoo staff decided in April it would be kinder to kill the youngster.

This week, the zoo announced that the cub, whose remains were deep-frozen, would be thawed out and handed over to an expert taxidermist to be stuffed.

The hide has been separated from the body and will be tanned and the body measured for a mold.

Explaining the process, the zoo said it considers it central to learning that animals are experienced in as natural a condition as possible, including contact with “animal materials” like hides, bones or fully stuffed creatures.

It added, “An emotional experience takes priority, which brings nature closer to the children with all its facets — ‘nice’ or not — and makes them tangible.”

But criticism of the zoo’s actions has focused on the fact that the adult bears involved were hand-raised — suggesting that their cubs could have been raised that way too.

The daily newspaper Berner Zeitung reported in April that the zoo had received a flood of public comment after Cub 4 was killed.

It quoted Sara Wehrli, head of the Wild Animal Department of Swiss Animal Protection, as saying the zoo had acted “irresponsibly” in its care of the bears.

“Bears are loners and need room, and in zoos, there are already too many brown bears,” she said. “Letting the two get pregnant was wrong. You can’t leave wild animals in captivity to ‘nature.’

“Whoever keeps them must take responsibility for them.”

In March, after the controversy over the Copenhagen Zoo’s actions, European Association of Zoos and Aquaria spokesman David Williams-Mitchell told CNN that across the European zoos governed by the body, about 3,000 to 5,000 animals are killed each year under programs to manage zoo populations.

This includes “everything from tadpoles and insects up to charismatic megafauna like giraffes and lions,” he said, adding that it represents only 0.06% of the zoos’ overall animal population.

Exact figures are hard to come by, but a few hundred of those killed by the zoos each year would be large animals, he said.

Williams-Mitchell added that members of the public and animal rights groups tend to object only when zoos kill “cute, storybook animals,” rather than rodents or tadpoles.
