U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS UNITE IN MASSIVE 24 HOUR

ON-LINE PETITION TO PREVENT CONGRESS FROM OVER-RIDING
OBAMA REJECTION OF PERMIT FOR KEYSTONE / TAR SANDS PIPELINE


Environmental groups across the U.S. are uniting right now to mount one of the largest on-line petition drives ever to occur within a 24 hour period. The purpose is to prevent Congress from over-riding Obama's rejection of a permit for the Keystone (tar sands) oil pipeline. The goal set yesterday was half a million signatures within 24 hours. As that goal was amazingly already surpassed by early evening (700,000), the new goal is one million. Would you please consider adding your name and spreading the word to your personal networks?

Last November, over 10,000 people formed a human chain to completely encircle the White House in an outpouring of concern for the future of earth. Just at the point when humanity must break its addiction to dirty oil or risk a global climate catastrophe, the fossil fuel corporations that stand to profit are pouring millions of dollars into creating a new "fix" by opening up a new "Saudi Arabia" in Canada. Last August, over 1200 people took part in large scale nonviolent civil disobedience at the White House - the largest such action in 30 years. Right now, the Senate is considering legislation that would resurrect the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. President Obama rejected this toxic disaster-in-the-making last month, and now Big Oil's representatives in Congress are trying to force its approval.

It looks like a deal might be coming together in the next 24 hours. I've just joined a huge effort to blitz the Senate with messages opposing Keystone XL - the entire environmental movement is coming together to send over 500,000 messages to Congress in under 24 hours. Can you join me?

If you haven't heard of Keystone XL or don't know about the tar sands, here's the short summary: Keystone XL is a proposed 1700 mile pipeline connecting the Alberta tar sands with refineries on the Gulf Coast. The tar sands are North America's largest pool of carbon, and NASA's top scientist James Hansen says that exploiting them means 'essentially game over' for the climate. Keystone will ship tar sands oil across critical water supplies and sensitive ecosystems just so it can be exported to foreign markets from refineries in Texas. The job benefits are way overstated, and overall it is just a scam designed to line Big Oil's pockets at our own expense.

Since we sent our call to action yesterday to stop Congress from ramming through this disastrous tar- sands pipeline, more than 793,000 people spoke out with an unmistakable message: Say NO to the Keystone XL pipeline.

40 conservation groups from around the country and 350.org mobilized their supporters and activists to speak out against Keystone during a frenzied, 24-hour push that started at noon yesterday.

We're proud to say that more than 24,500 Center for Biological Diversity activists added their voice to this massive effort. This quick action is what we've come to depend on. Thank you.

Every one of those signatures, which are being hand-delivered to Congress this afternoon, is a call to reject Big Oil's relentless lobbying machine. Stopping Keystone XL will be a powerful blow against the oil industry's corrupting influence.

The Center and our allies were the first to file legal challenges against the Keystone XL project when we found out that crews in Nebraska were clearing the way for the tar- sands pipeline even before it had been approved.

Since then, we've been fighting the project every step of the way. President Obama heeded our call last month in rejecting the pipeline, but Republicans in Congress are determined to push it through — no matter what the environmental cost may be. We can't let that happen.

Here's hoping today's incredible outpouring of opposition from every corner of America will finally take Keystone XL off the table for good.
