Wow, this morning I woke up to three different story's in the Drudge Reports......

    One....

First mixed-embryo monkeys are born in US

US researchers said Thursday they have created the world's first mixed-embryo monkeys by merging cells from up to six different embryos, in what could be a big advance for medical research.

Until now, rodents have been the primary creatures used to make chimeras, a lab animal produced by combining two or more fertilized eggs or early embryos together.

Meet the 'chimeric' monkeys made from the cells of SIX different animals

Monkeys created from genetic material from six animals
Will help research into stem cells and fertility, say scientists
Research is 'deeply disturbing' say animal rights groups - and will cause suffering

Welcome to a brave new world: Genetic scientists create freakish man-made monster ants with huge heads and jaws

Ancient genes activated by dab of hormones
Ants seem to contain a 'toolkit' for creating monsters
May be a throwback to ancestors from millions of years ago

Ancient Hormones? vivisection, and quite frankly they're leaving out the "C" word.....what they are not telly you is this is REVERSE GENETICS.....better known as "positional cloning".

Now I quite remember a story where God got fed up with the whole thing.....had a man gather two by two all the animals and created a huge flood to "to start over again".

It would seem this ancient practice of gene manipulation is getting rather freakish here.....

Scientists showed that ordinary ants of the species Pheidole morrisi contain all the genetic 'tools' needed to turn them into supersoldiers - they just need a hormonal push.

'We uncovered an ancestral development potential to produce a novel supersoldier subcaste that has been retained throughout a hyperdiverse ant genus that evolved 35 to 60 million years ago.'

The results suggest that holding on to ancestral development tool kits may play an important role in evolving new physical traits, say the researchers.

    Reverse Genetics...

Reverse genetics is an approach to discovering the function of a gene by analyzing the phenotypic effects of specific gene sequences obtained by DNA sequencing. This investigative process proceeds in the opposite direction of so-called forward genetic screens of classical genetics. Simply put, while forward genetics seeks to find the genetic basis of a phenotype or trait, reverse genetics seeks to find what phenotypes arise as a result of particular genes.

Automated DNA sequencing generates large volumes of genomic sequence data relatively rapidly. Many genetic sequences are discovered in advance of other, less easily obtained, biological information. Reverse genetics attempts to connect a given genetic sequence with specific effects on the organism.

    Positional Cloning...

Positional cloning is a technique which is used in genetic screening to identify specific areas of interest in the genome, and then determine what they do. This type of genetic screening is sometimes referred to as reverse genetics, because researchers start by figuring out where a gene is, and then they determine what it does, in contrast with methods which start by determining the function of a gene and then finding it in the genome. Genes related to conditions such as Huntington's Disease and cystic fibrosis have been identified with this technique.

In positional cloning, researchers find an area of interest on the genome by looking for genetic markers. They often take advantage of databases which collect information about people with medical conditions so that they can identify common traits which can be used to narrow down an area of the genome which might reveal useful information. Once markers have been found, a researcher can clone and investigate the area of interest to determine what it does. Positional cloning can also be used to screen specific individuals for genetic issues.
