Multi-vortex tornado slams into Joplin, Mo.; fatalities, injuries and extensive damage reported

A large tornado has struck Joplin in southwest Missouri, authorities said. Extensive damage has been reported on the south side of the city and along Rangeline Road, a major commercial thoroughfare in the city.

The tornado struck at about 5:45 p.m., according to reports transmitted to the Springfield branch of the National Weather Service. St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin has been severely damaged, authorities say, and scanner traffic indicates emergency responders from surrounding communities are converging on the city to assist with victims.

"This is really bad," one Joplin resident relayed to a family member in Andover via text message.

Jasper County Emergency Management Director Keith Stammer said the St. John's Regional Medical Center on the city's south side took a "direct hit." He said there are multiple reports of injuries and emergency responders are conducting search and rescue operations.

This is so tragic. I read that there were HAARP signatures in the area within the 48 hours prior to this happening.

My third post in this thread is a dutchsinse's video from 2 days ago forecasting this tornado while seeing "HAARP rings" on a radar.

After the massive destruction from a Tornado hit Joplin, Mo. these very strange lights & lightning went on for hours. No thunder. This was filmed in Chetopa, Ks. appx 45 miles from Joplin.

Afternnoon before the massive tornado in Joplin, these mammalus clouds formed 60 miles north. It started at around 3pm and lasted until dark, you would think that weather guru's would have known this is a strong indication of a tornado. The people did'nt know it was coming until 20 minutes before it hit. Half a mile wide, and six miles long!

Deadly Fungus Strikes Joplin Tornado Survivors, Volunteers

The Greene County (Mo.) Health Department has issued a memo to health care workers who are treating injured victims of May's deadly Joplin tornado, warning them that a powerful fungus has infected patients' wounds.

The Springfield News-Leader reports as many as nine cases have been reported in tornado victims across the area in various hospitals. Once the aggressive fungus -- called zygomycosis -- enters the body, it causes the death of infected cells. Three or four patients, who otherwise would have survived their wounds, have died from it.

If the fungus stays in a limb, like an arm or leg, some treatments have necessitated amputation to save the patient. Others with wounds near the head weren't so lucky -- as soon as brain tissue started dying, it was too late to save the patient.

The National Institutes of Health says this rapid form of infection most often occurs in patients with suppressed immune systems. One study in 2009 noted a diabetes patient who died of the fungal infection at age 48. Despite being treated early, the man's health rapidly declined as the fungus spread through his lungs.

Infections spread through the blood and affects blood circulation. It is unknown how many people may be suffering from infections, but the problem doesn't stop with those injured by the tornado.

KYTV in Springfield reports those helping with cleanup efforts may become scratched by nails or splinters and any fungus residue on those objects may infect someone.
