Thousands defied the ban on demonstrations and gathered in Tehran

Iranian police have fired tear gas at opposition supporters participating in a rally in the centre of the capital, Tehran, called in solidarity with the popular uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia.

A BBC producer, who was affected by the gas, said there had been severe clashes and described a scene of "total chaos".

There were also reports of protests in the cities of Isfahan and Shiraz.

Banking's SWIFT says ready to block Iran transactions
    Fri, Feb 17 2012

(Reuters) - Belgium-based SWIFT, which provides banks with a system for moving funds around the world, bowed to international pressure on Friday and said it was ready to block Iranian banks from using its network to transfer money.

Expelling Iranian banks from the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication would shut down Tehran's main avenue to doing business with the rest of the world - an outcome the West believes is crucial to curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions.

SWIFT, which has never cut off a country before, has been closely following efforts in the United States and the European Union to develop new sanctions targeting Iran that would directly affect EU-based financial institutions.

The United States and EU have already moved to sanction Iran's central bank.

"SWIFT stands ready to act and discontinue its services to sanctioned Iranian financial institutions as soon as it has clarity on EU legislation currently being drafted," the company said in an emailed statement.

The United States has been pushing the European Union to force SWIFT to evict the Iranian firms but it was unclear whether the EU would reach an agreement.

For one, SWIFT's home country, Belgium, does not think the global banking firm should be the only company of its kind required to comply with sanctions.

The Obama administration said it welcomed SWIFT's intention to stop transactions involving designated Iranian banks. "We will continue to be in contact with our EU partners to urge action on this issue," a U.S. Treasury official said.

SWIFT, with headquarters just outside the Belgian capital Brussels, is vital to international money flows, exchanging an average 18 million payment messages per day between banks and other financial institutions in 210 countries.

Here's an article and video re Meir Dagan's thoughts and also that Obama doesn't want to attack below that.

In a rare interview, ex-chief of Mossad Meir Dagan speaks out against a preemptive strike against Iranian nuclear facilities anytime soon. He says the Iranian regime is rational in its own way. Lesley Stahl reports.

(CBS News) Meir Dagan has been described as "hard-charging" and "stops at nothing." For more than eight years, Dagan made full use of those qualities as chief of Mossad, Israel's intelligence agency, where he focused on keeping Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. When that job ended, Dagan did something unheard of for an ex-Mossad chief: he spoke out publicly, voicing opposition to Israel launching preemptive airstrikes against Iran's nuclear facilities anytime soon. Dagan believes the Iranian regime is a rational one and even its president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - who has called for Israel to be annihilated - acts in a somewhat rational way when it comes to Iran's nuclear ambitions. Lesley Stahl reports.

Iran Ready to Be Paid in Gold, National Currencies for Oil
    Global Research, March 1, 2012

Tehran announced Tuesday that it is ready to receive payment for oil supplies in gold as well as the national currencies of importer countries. That’s according to Mahmoud Bahmani, Governor of the Central Bank of Iran.

In trade operations with foreign countries Iran does not limit itself to dollars, and any state is free to use its own currency, Bahmani is quoted as saying by Russia's Itar-Tass news agency. He also added that if any client state wants to pay in gold, Iran would accept it without hesitation.

In 2012 the US toughened sanctions against the country that attempt to obstruct the activities of the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Washington warned that sanctions would also be applied against international banks that use US dollars in deals with Iran. As a result, countries that buy Iranian oil have faced the problem of how to pay for it. Now, the Islamic country is working to accommodate its clients through the offer to accept their national currencies.

Iran Now Empty Iran oil sector hit by 'cyber attack'

Post  burgundia Mon Apr 23, 2012 1:24 pm

    http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5ivdP6nle_OuBNCj2NAL2rBVQ5-lQ?docId=CNG.a86eb6b2701ce148592ac01588b748be.41

TEHRAN — A voracious virus attack has hit computers running key parts of Iran's oil sector, forcing authorities to unplug its main oil export terminal from the Internet and to set up a cyber crisis team, according to reports on Monday.

The Mehr news agency reported that Iran's principal oil terminal on Kharg island in the Gulf has been disconnected from the Internet since Sunday along with facilities in other parts of the country.

The Kharg terminal handles 90 percent of Iran's oil exports, according to the National Iranian Oil Terminals Company.

Mehr said the Internet disconnection "has not caused any problem" in oil production and exports.

Mehr did not give a source for the report, and no official Iranian media confirmed the information.

The websites of the Iranian oil ministry (www.mop.ir) and the National Iranian Oil Company (www.nioc.ir) were off-line for hours after they and other affiliated official sites were brought down by the malware, Mehr and other news agencies including Fars and ISNA said.

By late Monday, the ministry website was back up, though the NIOC site remained down.

Oil ministry spokesman Alireza Nikzad told the ministry's news website SHANA that, contrary to initial reports in Iran, the virus had succeeded in wiping data off official servers.

"To say that no data was harmed is not right. Only data related to some of the users have been compromised," he said.

Iran's oil ministry has set up a "cyber crisis committee" to confront the "cyber attack," Mehr said, quoting a civil defence official at the ministry.

Iran's reaction to the virus attack was a test of procedures put in place after the country suffered a massive cyber assault in 2010 by a worm called Stuxnet that reportedly dealt a big blow to the country's nuclear programme.

Stuxnet, Western media and experts said, homed in precisely on computers running uranium enrichment centrifuges at Iran's nuclear facility in Natanz, destroying thousands of them and setting the atomic programme back months.

Tehran has disputed the extent of the damage caused, and has in any case, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency, since recovered and redoubled its uranium enrichment acitivities.

The highly sophisticated code in Stuxnet, and an apparent "expiry" procedure meant to render it harmless after a period of time, suggested to Western anti-virus experts that it could only have been created by a government.

Suspicion has focused on the United States, with or without help from Israel.

Washington and Tel Aviv are the loudest critics of Iran's nuclear programme, which they see as masking a bid to develop the capability to make atomic weapons.

Iran, which denies its nuclear programme is anything but peaceful, has come under intense Western pressure in recent months in the form of economic sanctions aimed at curbing its all-important oil exports.

The Islamic republic is OPEC's second-biggest exporter, after Saudi Arabia, and relies on crude sales for 80 percent of its foreign currency and for more than half of its government finances.

The issues of Tehran's nuclear activities and Western sanctions are being raised in talks between Iran and world powers that were revived in Istanbul this month and are due to continue in Baghdad on May 23.

Iran Now Empty Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accuses the West of destroying Iran's rain clouds

Post  burgundia Wed Sep 12, 2012 6:05 am

The Iranian president made the assertions in a speech on Monday addressing the problems caused by low rainfall trends, which experts say is threatening Iran's agriculture.

"Today our country is moving towards drought, which is partly unintentional due to industry and partly intentional, as a result of the enemy destroying the clouds moving towards our country and this is a war that Iran is going to overcome," Mr Ahmadinejad said in a speech in the Caspian Sea city of Gonbad-e Kavus to mark its registration as a Unesco World Heritage site.

Although Iran is recognised as having one of the world's driest climates, the comments were the latest in a series of allegations by officials of a Western conspiracy to turn its water shortage into a major crisis.

In July, Hassan Mousavi, head of Iran's cultural heritage organisation and one of Mr Ahmadinejad's vice-presidents, urged meteorological experts to investigate the possibility that the west was engineering a draught in southern Iran, traditionally one of the country's most parched regions.

"I feel that the world arrogance and colonisation (Iranian official code language for the US and its allies) by using their technologies, are affecting the environmental situation in Iran," he said.

Saudi Arabia Named As ‘Number One’ Terrorist State – Not Iran

Posted on February 14, 2017 by Sean Adl-Tabatabai

President Trump’s claim that Iran is the “number one terrorist state” has been proved false, as leaks originating from within the White House secretly acknowledge that Saudi Arabia is the world’s biggest sponsor of terrorism.

Throughout Trump’s presidential campaign, he has made Iran the number one enemy of the United States, urging the public and military to prepare for a confrontation with the country in the near future.

The truth, however, is that Saudi Arabia, a U.S. ally, is secretly considered the world’s biggest threat to terrorism by officials in Washington.

    Veteranstoday.com reports:

In a September 2014 email from John Podesta to Hillary Clinton (one of the many among the batches of emails exchanged between John Podesta, chair of Hillary Clinton’s campaign for the White House, and Clinton that were released by Wikileaks) Podesta writes,

“While this military/para-military operation is moving forward, we need to use our diplomatic and more traditional intelligence assets to bring pressure on the governments of Qatar and Saudi Arabia, which are providing clandestine financial and logistic support to ISIL and other radical Sunni groups in the region.”

Further evidence about the role of the Saudis and other Gulf States in actively and materially supporting terrorism is the 2015 sworn testimony of Zacarias Moussaoui, the so-called 20th 9/11 hijacker, claiming that members of the Saudi royal family had supported Al-Qaeda. As part of a civil case that was brought against the Saudis by the 9/11 families, Moussaoui went as far as naming the specific members of the Saudi royal family who had donated money to the terrorist group in the lead up to 9/11.

But even without any evidence of direct links between the Saudis and various Salafi-jihadist terrorist groups, the extreme Wahhabi interpretation of Sunni Islam embraced by the Saudis as a state religion is near indistinguishable from the ideology of ISIS or Nusra or any of those terror organizations.

Indeed the funding of mosques and Islamic centers by the Saudis across the world, places in which this extreme and perverse interpretation of Islam is preached, has become a source of mounting concern in recent years.

In 2015 the UK’s Independent newspaper carried a story claiming a leaked intelligence report compiled by Germany’s BfV domestic intelligence agency alleged the Saudis and other Gulf monarchies – the Qataris and Kuwaitis – were actively supporting extreme Islamic groups in Germany.

They are allegations that tally with those made by Donald Trump in an interview he conducted on NBC’s Meet The Press in August 2015. During the interview, NBC reporter Chuck Todd presented Mr. Trump with a 2011 statement he made regarding the Saudis, which reads, “It’s [Saudi Arabia’s] the world’s biggest funder of terrorism. Saudi Arabia funnels our petrodollars, our very own money, to fund the terrorists that seek to destroy our people while the Saudis rely on us to protect them.”

The barbarity and mendacity of the Saudis are beyond doubt. When they aren’t terrorizing and butchering their own people at home, they are engaged in despicable war crimes in Yemen – war crimes in which the US and UK are complicit.

So why in the face of all the evidence and acquired knowledge when it comes to Saudi Arabia’s role in supporting terrorism and fomenting extremism, does the US continue to count Riyadh as its closest and most valued ally in the region after Israel? The simple answer is commerce.

Saudi Arabia is the US defense industry’s biggest customer, a mantle that Donald Trump intends to maintain with his recent decision to lift the ban that was imposed by Obama on further arms sales to the Kingdom over its human rights violations in Yemen.

It is also significant that while Iran is one of the seven predominately Muslim countries placed on the Trump administration travel ban list, neither Saudi Arabia nor any of the other Gulf States has been put on it. This alone proves that the President is not as serious about fighting terrorism than he likes to make out.

Iran, to repeat, is not a state that sponsors, funds, or foments terrorism, while Saudi Arabia is. The mere fact that this needs to be pointed out to the President is redolent of a view of the world from the Oval Office that continues to be upside down.

I forgot to mention its election time in the US so its customary for the president to go to war to get re elected. This is obviously driven by the american population.

I think if the people of the US were less xenophobic and war like it wouldnt be a prerequisite and Trumpy could get on with trying to fix his country instead.
