PASCAGOULA, Miss. (WALA) - An explosion at Northrop Grumman's Pascagoula shipyard is forcing workers to evacuate. It happened around 7:45 Thursday morning. One witness says black smoke is billowing over the west bank and fire crews are fighting it from the water.A spokesperson for Northrop Grumman said no injuries have been reported. Sheriff Mike Byrd says there was smoke billowing on the west bank. Crews attacked the fire from the water and believe they have it contained. One man who was working at the shipyard told WLOX News there were probably about a thousand people working on the boat when the explosion occurred nearby. Erie Deputy Fire Chief Marty Heid tells the Erie Times-News that the fire started shortly before midnight Thursday in the engine of a crane used to lift workers. Nobody was using the crane when the fire started, though.
